  1. I bought this for my mom because her primary language is Greek. The pictures are beautiful but the recipes are rather basic. Nothing bad, just that my mom could probably teach Vefa a thing or two. I still consider it a good purchase as it has my mom looking through it and discussing with me what she may do the same or differently and why.

  1. Vefa Alexiadou has done it again. I purchased this book while in Greece after seeing her on a very popular morning show. I was not disappointed. I had purchased other books from her and had always been pleased. Greek pasteries are amongst the most difficult to make yet Vefa makes it not only easy but enjoyable. The photos in the book are wonderful. Upon first glance I wanted to make everything! For those of you who want to try traditional Greek cooking, the way it is done in Greece, then this is the book for you.

  2. If you don't own this book, then your library is incomplete! Having just returned from Greece, I can honestly say this has every pastry you'd find in a neighborhood bakery. One of the best parts of Greece is the dining, whether during Lent or the rest of the year, and this book has all the dessert recipes you'd need to have a little of Greece in your own home year-round. She also has a great variety of recipes for the various Orthodox Christian holidays, which makes the book all the more valuable for festive occasions such as Christmas and Easter. If you've lost Grandma's cookie recipes, just pick up a copy of this. Thank you, Vefa!

  3. I am a Turk living in California. I was amazed by the recipes and the photos in this book. I haven't yet had time to try all the recipes, but I have been very pleased with the ones that I tried. The explanations are good and easy to follow. Taste is authentic. For people who are not familiar with the pastries and desserts of the region, the photos in the book show what the outcome will look like.
Highly recommended to those with a sweet tooth ;-)

  1. Like other companion volumes in the "Mama's Kitchen" series, The Greek Mama's Kitchen: Authentic Homestyle Recipes presents classic family recipes handed down through generations along with anecdotes of matronly cooking wisdom, such as "Kitchen life is controlled by the seasons - create dishes from whatever vegetables are available that day" and "For that sweet, mellow flavor of the best pepper salads, you need to first roast (or scorch) the peppers." Recipes such as Fried Cheese, Roast Quail in Grape Leaves, Vanilla Custard Pies and many more capture the essence of traditional flavors, and are presented with extensive, explicit instructions along with a introduction to the nature of the dish and when is best to serve it. A handful of color photographs round out this value-priced compendium.

  1. George Kyrtatas is the chef and co-owner of Hathaway's Restaurant in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. He is a certified Chef de Cuisine with the American Culinary Federation. My Big Fat Greek Feast is his debut cookbook and draws upon his many years of experience and expertise to showcase some of the finest Greek culinary fare adapted to the need for today's kitchen cooks for meals that are flavorful, fast, and fun! From Garlic Cucumber Dip; Greek Shrimp Salad; Grilled Red Snapper Oreganata; and Roasted Portabella-Pepper-Feta-Basil on Focaccia; to Baked Chicken in a Red Sauce; Ouzo and Melon Soup; Grecian Stuffed Potatoes; and Greek Biscotti, My Big Fat Greek Feast is superbly organized and a welcome addition to ethnic cookbook collections.

  2. This cook book is great. It reminds me of the movie The big fat Greek wedding. I have tryed the receipes. I got to tell you I am greek. I believe americans will enjoy these receipes. Folkes need to venture out and try different receipes. My husband is not greek and I try every new receipes on him and my friends. Be ventures!

  3. I've had this book 3 days and have tried 2 recipes! I love the simplicity, easy ingredients as well as big print since I leave my glasses everywhere! As the previous reviewer, I too am Greek, these recipes are just like my yaiya's, mom's and aunts who were all wonderful cooks. Even amateur cooks will enjoy the easy, fun and delicious recipes for all occasions! Thank you George!

  4. I bought this cookbook after watching a segment on Digital Cookbook (www.digitalcookbook.tv) and my 7-year-old decided we needed to try making the almond macaroons. Most of the recipes are easy, and have basic ingredients, but I chose not to try procuring rose water for the macaroons...if you always wanted to try making flaming cheese at home, here's your cookbook!

  5. Being Greek and a NON-gourmet cook, I give my highest recommendation to this book! The true test is the quality of the recipes. The several dishes I've made have come out wonderfully and were enthusiastically received by my (sometimes picky) family.

George Kyrtatas comes as billed--he truly does present the Greek classics and essentials, with an occasional modern twist, yielding wonderful results. Chef George does a great job of simplifying what could be complex recipes (I know from my own family's culinary background) and making them manageable for the average cook. I also love how he emphasizes creativity and substitution in the kitchen, which is a facility possessed by any good cook. Not only does Chef George teach you how to be a good Greek cook, he helps you become a better cook, period.

In addition, the facts, tips, and personal notes he sprinkles throughout the book are incredibly interesting, serving to season his collection with the flavor of Greek history and culture. This book is a definite keeper in my culinary library and is sure to become a well-worn classic.
