3 comments about Gourmet cat treats: A cookbook of tasty treats for your favorite cat.
  1. My Wife and I tried this book for our 2 young cats, and after we spent a while in the kitchen, making the treat for them, they didn't even want to eat it! We finally tricked them by adding the home-made treat to their favorite canned food.

  2. This book was a great for a business starter in my area. If you want to spoil your cat this is a great way to do it ......

  3. This book was fun to use and my cats love the treats, especially the Meow Loaf. Very easy to do and the recipes are great for the grandkids.

  1. Though likely well intentioned - the recipes for this book are not well researched. The author suggests that onions be used - in many recipes - but, according to my vet, onions can be deadly to dogs!! Other than onions - there are many recipes that suggest loads of cheese... there are great recipes to modify - but, unless you are acutely aware of dog health issues and needs, this book may not be as helpful as you would like.

  2. Hot Diggity Dog! The recipes in this book are downright delicious! My two favorites are the Cowhide Fajitas and the Hazelnut Squirrel Surprise (surprise - the squirrel is STILL ALIVE!) I don't have a dog but if you want to know the truth, these recipes are great for any mammal - including apes, dolphins and humans. My kids absolutely love the Puppy Poundcakes and the Dog Poop Dumplings are a Passover favorite. Four paws up for Suzan and Bunny! They've created the world's tastiest cookbook for dogs, Chupacabras, Sasquatches, Morlocks and yes... even Jeff Goldblum. Woof! Woof!

  3. I suppose I could cook for my dogs on a regular basis, but I don't. This book has been extremely valuable to me, though, when I have a dog who has been very sick or through surgery and is refusing the regular fare. In such case I can always find a recipe here to tempt the appetite and bring them back from the edge. I credit the toasted sardine and cheese sandwich for saving Mac (gangrenous spot on the liver in 1991); and right now Kerby (cancer diagnosis and amputee) is willing to eat the gizzard and egg pie (I have several others marked, like potato and bacon stuffed hotdogs). The recipes are simple and economical, and include gravies, soups, and breakfasts, as well as special needs diets. The earlier review about onions is well noted, but I'm not sure that was anything people knew about when this book first came out. I would think the other review is bogus.
For those who may be at a loss at how to deal with post-surgical or disease related anorexia, I highly recommend this book.

  4. This book has many recipies but it's very comparable to the Three Dog's Bakery Cookbook. Many of the recipies I probably wouldn't use due to the special ingredients, time, preparation, etc. It's good if you really, really pamper your dog. (My dog likes biscuits). Some people might worry about these types of treats or meals causing problems with dogs wanting to eat from your dinner table.

  1. I loved the look of the food in this book. I really felt inspired. The freshness of the menus appealed to me, also. The photography was wonderful! It made you want to pick up a fork and begin to do a taste test on every page. The grilled pineapple with vanilla ice cream was simple to make and a treat for unexpected guests on Sunday afternoon. It is good of Gourmet to study so closly the food culture of another country. It really gave the reader a good sense of what Thai cooking is all about. It is a good addition to the other Gourmet books and something to look forward to every year. A GREAT GIFT for cooks of all levels.

  2. I love this book for several reasons.

First, the menu suggestions are great. They range from two servings to around fifty, there are meals suitable for each season (some are grill-oriented, some are Thanksgiving feasts, etc.), and you can choose from light and healthy to downright sinful meals.

Second, the recipes require a great variety of skill levels. A novice can start with the easier recipes and work up to the more difficult ones without needing to buy a new book! This is also great because even those who are experienced and passionate cooks (who, like myself, would usually revel in the four-hour mushroom lasagne prep time) have days when they want a simple, toned-down meal. It's all here.

The recipes are also very easy to follow. They list at the outset any special equipment you will need, and the preparation instructions are clear and concise.

Those without access to specialty grocery stores might have trouble coming up with some ingredients (creme fraiche, figs, radish sprouts, or Israeli couscous come to mind), but there are many recipes whose ingredients are easily found at the most common of groceries.

I have to say that I dislike the way the "Unusual Pastas and Grains" section is separated from the "Pastas and Grains" section. It's also disappointing that Thai recipes are stuck in their own "Cuisines of the World" section without references in other more specific sections (for example, Ai-Teem Ga-Ti, aka Coconut Ice Cream, is not mentioned in the "Desserts" section earlier - so if you choose to page through the desserts section, you will not be aware that there are other dessert recipes elsewhere in the book).

All in all, I'd say that this book offers great recipes and menu suggestions for cooks at all levels, but it could be organized more efficiently.

  1. Lots of complicated to make but tasty burgers. Most the recipes are very unusual and exotic. But they are good and fun. McNair knows how to pack in the flavor.

3 comments about The Low-Carb Gourmet: A Cookbook for Hungry Dieters.
  1. This book has some delicious recipes, yes. However, it makes mistakes in its net carb count. I don't know why but almost every low carb cookbook and/or recipe (in a book) that I read does not properly count the 24g per cup of Splenda and fiber. So you have to count it yourself.

I own about 7-8 low carb cookbooks and I think I will stop there :) From now on I am using the Internet, and I recommend you do the same. Why buy a book when you have to do the net carb count yourself? If you need a place on the Internet to start, here it is: [...]

And I think this is the exact link that I have been using:

    [...]

Many of the recipes already have the correct count, but even if they don't, THEY'RE FREE!!

  2. I have given this to two other people it's great. I use it all the time

  3. This book is a good source of information, but some of the recipes aren't so realistic. Either way, the recipes I have made from it have been great!

2 comments about Lebanese Cuisine: Over Two Hundred Authentic Recipes Designed for the Gourmet, the Vegetarian, the Healthfood Enthusiast.
  1. I am so filled with joy when I saw this cookbook at your site. It is the same one(11th edition) that my grandmother has cooked from for years. She is not lebanese, but my grandfather is and he loves her cooking. It has your basic kibbe, tabouli, and hummus recipes, as well as more complex and wondeful recipes. I have ordered it and would like to thank you once again, this is the best Lebanese cookbook made...and ya'll have it...thanks!

  2. My aunt gave me a copy of this book one year for Christmas, and I've found it is the one of the only cookbooks I ever consult. I grew up eating Lebanese food and have come to appreciate it more by cooking all the things my mom never had time to teach me how to make. This is a great book for those who grew up with this cuisine, as well as those interested in trying out healthy "Mediterranean" cooking.
