2 comments about The Belgian Cookbook (1915).
- Written during the first World War for displaced Belgians, The Belgian Cookbook is an absolute gem for those who do not enjoy cooking by strict recipes. Nearly all of the recipes in this book do not call for measurements, but rather ask for 'handfuls' of this and 'bunches' of that. I believe one recipe even calls for a peck, which is in fact a measurement, but I bet you wouldn't be able to measure it. I bought this after finding in on Google books and noticing a recipe for a tomato salad that begins: "Some people think that you can make a salad by slicing tomatoes and shallots and throwing in a little vinegar and oil. That is not a salad. That is ignorance." I knew I had to have it after that. The recipes are excellent and call for mainly fresh vegetables and delicious sauces. I think that they are healthy and satisfying, and that this is the way people should eat. Highly recommended.
- I wish I had read the review. This book has almost no measurements of recipee items. Ingredients are mentioned with instructions.
My expectation of a cook book is a list of ingredients with quantities of each. Then an instruction of what to mix together what to cook first etc.
This is a freelance cooking book with very little mention of quantities of ingredients. short paragraphs on how to cook are made covering put carrots in etc.
Not my idea of a cook book.

5 comments about Jane Austen's Guide to Good Manners: Compliments, Charades and Horrible Blunders.
- Don't sit by the phone waiting for him to call... read Jane Austen! Learn how to find the right man to love you forever. Simple lessons learned to make a life time of heartache disappear. Sometime for every girl that is still dating. A must read.
- I am not an English literature major, but even so, I appreciated having an explanation of the proper manners - and manners proper - to Jane Austen's era.

Note: I ordered this new book and was sent a marked remainder. I returned it asking for a new book... And received yet another marked remainder.
The price needs to be halved again and advertised as remainder stock in order to be both accurate and a decent value.
- If you have read Jane Austen, seen Jane Austen movies, you probably know that the manners and social customs they had back then are so very different from ours today. This book is a guide that explains how to have good manners if you ever find yourself in Jane Austen's World. Furthermore, this book could serve as a guide to writing a novel that takes place during regency time. In addition, if you are curious about the customs and social behaviors in Jane Austen's books, this book will help to clarify and explain why such behaviors are acceptable and what is considered a "social blunder."
It is a delightfully pleasing little book that comes with beautiful watercolor illustrations and a ribbon bookmark. The book is divided into chapters with specific topics and includes examples from Jane Austen's books, letters, and advice she gave to her niece, Fanny when she was attempting to write a novel.
Chapters Include:
1. Manners Makyth Man - and Woman
2. The Forms of Introduction
3. Calling and Conversation
4. Dancing and Dining
5. Dress and Taste
6. The Subject of Matrimony
7. The Family Circle
8. The Assistance of Servants
I found this to be an enjoyable and enlightening read. Some things are kind of obvious, like how the eldest daughter is addressed as Miss Bennet and unless she is married or not present, no other sisters can have that title. But other things were very new to me, like rules about servants and that you are supposed to be careful in complimenting the clothing of others. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who likes the Regency time period, would like to understand Jane Austen's World better, or is interested in writing a novel that takes place during the Regency time period and wants to be historically accurate.
- This was a very amusing little book and the water-colors inside were gorgeous. However, it was quite short and it would have been nice if there was more historical information included and more substance. I was hoping to learn a bit more about the Regency period from this book, but found that I already knew everything in it, both from reading Miss Austen's original works and from the movie adaptations.

1 comments about Amish Country Cooking.
- This beautifully arranged book combines traditional German-
American recipes with rich photographs illustrating the
Amish lifestyle. It makes an interesting coffee table book,
although you will definitely want to use it in the kitchen
too. The uncomplicated recipes range from soups, like Rich
Brown Soup, through hearty pot roasts and other main dishes,
to cakes and desserts: Shoo-Fly Pie, Apple Strudel, and
Sweet Yeast Biscuits... Don't expect to find "all natural"
health cooking. The recipes call for ordinary ingredients
and include sugar, butter, meat and the like.

2 comments about Transylvanian Desserts: My Mom's Recipes.
- I did try several of the recepies and the outcome was delicious! I particularly loved the more traditional deserts. The book is a keeper. I wish there were more recipes! Maybe a follow up book?
- I had great success with these recipes. They came out both delicious and very presentable. Preparing them was an experience that I recommend to any dessert lover. I wish there were more recipes so I will be waiting for a "part II".
