- Odd to serve up a review on an out-of-print item, but I have relied on this book for so long that I owe it to the author... wherever they may be.
This is a tour of South-Eastern and Eastern European cuisine, and each chapter covers a different country. A few pages introduce the reader to the place -- history, influences, geography, people, as well as to how that cuisine relates to its neighbors. The recipes are concise, easy to create, and surprisingly well captured. The chapters are inherently short (maybe 10-15 recipes each), but check out the neighboring countries, and most times the image is complete. I am Romanian, and I scoop up recipes from the Bulgarian, Hungarian and even Polish chapters when I'm looking for something specific.
What's even better, is getting a sense of place for each country, and correlating food with history... When I was a newcomer to the US, a university colleague's wife copied of this book for me, to remind me of home. I have accumulated by now a number of cookbooks, in both English *and* Romanian, yet 20 years later, I still prefer to use this copy, and I've been looking for ways to buy it and recommend it to others. Now I have it here!
Highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring their Southern or Eastern European roots!

- What a disappointment. Very poor cookbook. You got the impression that this was a knocked up version by a relative trying to be a coookery writer and for the price it represents very bad value. Think twice.

- While Slavov does an excellent job of covering the wide variety of Bulgarian dishes, his recipes all call for large quantities. I have found that cooking a Bulgarian meal for 2 requires only about 1/5 of the proportions Slavov gives. Otherwise, the book is concise, without pictures, with a complete list of ingredients but light on description or explanation. In my opinion, one would need a Bulgarian consultant to know if the dishes turned out correctly.
- Atanas Slavov is a prominent Bulgarian-American writer. He has written many books on many subjects for many years. His commentary alone is worth the price of the book. The little essay on tomatoes was excellent and very true. (If you're Bulgarian, you'll understand how important tomatoes are!) Very Bulgarian in thought and sense of humor throughout, not to mention for the appropriate cultural notes.
But are the recipes any good? Largely, yes. However, this is still not a complete cookbook. There are many recipes missing, such as some pepper spreads/pastes, recipes calling for cheese, oh gosh, so many more. But this is a very good start for anyone who wants to learn more about Bulgarian cooking or who needs a favorite old recipe. The recipes are Americanized well (meaning appropriate spices were substituted for ones you can't get in the US, etc.). There is a little bit of everything from Bulgarian cuisine. Fish, which gets little coverage in most western Balkan cookbooks is covered here. The dessert section is also very nice, and the wine notes are a plus. Again though, it should have been so much more. I have to speak to the review ahead of mine. 90% of cookbooks have recipes that yield 4-6 servings. Cookbooks that cater to meals of two servings are rare, specialty items. This cookbook has clear yields of 4-6 servings for entrees, 8 servings for desserts and more for things such as drinks and jams. It's just the way cookbooks are. Bulgarian cookbooks are still too hard to find in the US. This is a good one. I only wish that the cuisine had been given the exhaustive attention it needs.
- Excelent authentic easy to use recipes. Many amusing thoughts by the author. We had the pleasure of the authentic Bulgarian recipes in Sofia, and this book is a close as we can match them in the US. Here we can't get such fresh vegatables, fruits and good wine.
- I love having this book. I consult it once in a while when the time difference does not allow me to call my mom in Bulgaria for cooking advice. I find that my family cooks a lot of the dishes in the book differently. Yet, a great cross section of Bulgarian cuisine. Now I can have my husband cook Bulgarian dishes for me.

- I was extremely disappointed in this package.
1. This is NOT a cookbook. It has a total of 30 recipes with approximations for the measurements. If you are serious about cooking, this package is definitely not for you. Furthermore, you can find better, more extensive and accurate recipes online for free. I am Bulgarian -- I should know. 2. The pictures, multimedia, and instructions are amateur, to say the least -- bad resolution, poor recording, annoying transitions. If you are experienced in using a computer and digital media, you will most likely be outraged at the bad quality. 3. The disc included is NOT a software program of any kind. You do not set it up on your computer; you simply "play" it. Hence, do not expect to get a nifty program that may let you edit the recipes, scale the recipes, or convert measurements. There is no such interaction. The 30 recipes you see are all you get. Overall, if there were a rating of 0, I would have used it in this case. If you are considering buying this package, I think it is greatly overpriced. You would be better off buying the Betty Crocker cookbooks on CD-ROM. That CD-ROM includes 9,000 recipes and it is professional in every way. Furthermore, with the software (MasterCook) you can add your own recipes and create your own cookbooks/collections. Most Bulgarian recipes you can find online and import them easily in MasterCook.

- After wondering for a long time how some of those dishes my parents prepared in all the festive occasions growing in Istanbul, this book was such a great suprise, because author studied the recepies and thus are very doable and authentic. Since than I prepare the Tishpisti I so much enjoyed as a child, but was too late to ask my father for the recepie. Thanks Viviane for the heart worming pictures and food.
- Very nice compilation of Eastern European recipies...someone will find at least a few that will satisfy picky palates!!!

- We loved the color pictures of the food, people and places included in this wonderful cookbook. We also enjoyed the history and folklore mingled in between the recipes. AWESOME!
- This is a great cookbook with detailed descrptions of the most popular Bulgarian dishes and all the needed US ingredient substitutions.
- Covers a lot of famous Balkan recipies. However I found a few really strange dishes that do not really fall under traditional Bulgarian food, such as 'Meat and Eggplant pie' or 'Golden Milk pie'. I lived in Bulgaria for 10 years and have never even heard of such dishes. But overall this book includes some very yammy recipes and I would recomend it to anyone who loves food.
- I am Bulgarian and my wife is American. This book did wonders in bridging the gap between the cultures. Linda has managed to capture the spirit of my culture and express it through food, stories and traditions. My wife has cooked Bulgarian meals using this book and I swear some of them could put my parent's and grandparent's cooking to shame!
Very authentic, highly recommended for anyone who is interested in Bulgarian culture/cuisine and/or wants to introduce it to a loved one/friend.
- I am a Bulgarian who has lived in North America for about 35 years. This book is very basic and it is obvious that the author was in Bulgaria during the 90s when food was scarce. To me the book does no justice to bulgarian cooking because it lacks recepies
that involve lamb and pork which is very important in Bulgaria. The book is O.K. for someone who wants to try out some basic ,every day dishes and get a feel for bulgarian cooking. I was happy to find that the author has included som bulgarian jewish dishes which I am going try.
