  1. In the world of big, glossy, expensive cookbooks, this small (64 page) book might easily get overlooked. That'd be a huge mistake. While it may not have poignant anecdotes or rambling essays on cultural values, every single page is a treat. There are over 100 recipes crammed into this book (and that might be an underestimation), all of them illustrated. The paper is glossy and fairly easy to wipe down when you inevitably get spices or lemon juice on it (because for me, this book is always out in the kitchen).

I've probably made about half of the recipes in here so far, and they're all absolutely fantastic. I especially recommend the Bulgur Soup and the Lemon Mint Chicken--it calls for grilling, but I broil it, and it's a nearly weekly indulgence. :) The recipes are easy to follow and I've yet to come across an ingredient I couldn't easily find.

  1. I had this book when I was a kid and everytime my birthday would roll around I would flip through this and admire all the doll cakes, sprinkled cakes, chocolate cakes and so forth. One year the piano cake was recreated for my birthday and we added some musical accessories to it. Some of the other highlights I enjoyed in here were the tea party cake, the candy shop cake, the doll cakes, the number cakes, the musical instrument ones, fairy tale ones and this really pretty cake with vanilla frosting with sprinkly hearts on the sides. People used to really treat cake baking as an art form as shown in this book, but now people just want to get the same old cake from a grocery store or a plain cake with a picture of the latest cartoon fad or something, where's the art in that? Definitely buy this book and make creative cakes together with your kids or anyone at all, it's a great pasttime

  2. This was an absolute favourite with the kids in my family when we were growing up. Getting to choose what cake you were going to have was a favourite family tradition. You should REALLY get this book for your kids.

  3. I had this book as a child too - my mother made the piano cake, the baby doll cake and many more which I remember vividly. Now I have two little boys and they love looking through the book to choose their own birthday cakes. So far we have made number cakes, dump trucks, barns and ducks together - not always quite from the book, but using it as inspiration. The kids love it and it's great fun. Highly recommended!

  4. Oh my God, I remember this book from when I was little. My sister and I, both born in January, used to borrow it from my Aunty and spend hours poring over it discussing what cakes we could have. We were only allowed these cakes on "special" birthdays which, hmmmm, were only 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Not sure what that big gap in the middle was about, clearly we were deprived children. Anyway, this was THE book. And it still is in so many ways. My two year old took off with it as soon as it arrived and spent what seemed like hours (but was probably only a blissful 20 minutes) flicking through it. He quickly grasped that he could choose something for his third birthday and eventually decided on the rocket cake (balanced precariously on cardboard fins, great). It was delightful to see the magic transferring down a generation, which is why I give it such a high rating. It is now a bit dated though... I had forgotten that it's divided into "For Boys" and "For Girls" sections. Rather hilariously, the "For Girls" section contains a sewing machine cake, a sewing basket cake, a dressing table cake and, just when you think it couldn't get any worse, a stove cake(!). That aside, it's much more creative and exciting than the more modern edition and it also contains a lot of ideas to kick start your own creativity.

  1. Not just a book about kangeroo steaks and gator burgers like I thought. All the imigrants have added to the Australian cuisine, so you get Thai, Italian, Vietnamese and lots more! Gorgeous pictures as most "Beautiful cookbook" collectors like me :-) will know. You get lots of fish, lots of low fat lots of spice.

A "must have" for your kitchen, you get about ten cuisines in one.

  1. This cookbook is a wonderful compilation of cakes and slices (bars)that are not too complicated and are based on simple and wholesome ingredients. No matter what continent you cook on, everything you need to know to adapt the recipes is included.

  2. This book saves the day, when you are expecting guests or organising an afternoon tea for friends. Some recipies are fast and faboulous to make, some are more complicted but worth the effort. Very creative.

  3. I've baked from this book for more than 15 years. Recipes are simple and foolproof. The cakes may not be show-stoppingly memorable or particularly unique/ innovative, but for a solid, no-fail repertoire of good, homely cakes, this is the book. Recommended.

  4. I tried to buy this book in Australia and couldn't find it in new or used book stores. It was great to find it in the USA and at a better price too.

  5. I bought this book as I was replacing a lost copy of the same book. I was not able to buy the book in Australia as it is no longer in print and the newer version of this book dosen't have all of the receipes so I was delighted to find a copy with Amazon. The book was as described, in fantastic condition especially since it was second hand. I recieved the book in a short time to Australia from Amercia. Received much earlier than quoted. The transaction was easy. I would have liked something in the book that showed me where it had actually come from since it was second hand. A name and the place that the person lives written inside the cover but thats me I am a sentimental kind and love the history behind things. Not everyone would like that as they would think that it spoils the book. I'm a very happy customer thanks :-)

  1. Not the hockey puck excuses for pastries that Americans call scones or the over bicarbonated items called biscuits - the true scone known in Australia ( and all of england) is light served with jam and cream, or lemon curd and accompnies afternoon tea. You haven't lived till you try them. This book will show you how easy and it is ... oh and the breads and muffins are a treat as well.

    expat australian ;-)
