- I am so excited that I was allowed to meet the authors of this book. I have never been big on actually cooking but once I got home and skimmed through this book, it was on. I am definitely hitting the supermarket and putting some of these treats to the test.
The book is quick, light and definitely something to try.
- This book is wonderful- Ive been with my husband for 10 years, and even I have found this book to be a great resource! From setting the table to the morning after- even nursing a cold- these ladies certainly know what they are talking about!
Get this book for ALL the women in your life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- I loved this book. It is for the novice cook or just someone that wants a little variety in their everyday meals. It taught me alot and i feel that i am more confident in my meal preparation. I hope that there is a part 2 to this book because i would definately buy it. Deserves more than 5 stars. Great work ladies.
- this book has really easy and good recipes with things i already have around the house. am looking forward to making everything in the book!
- An ordinary cookbook this is not. Everything about The Get `Em Girl's Guide is absolutely delicious! Dining is an art. To make the experience just right - all my senses must be engaged. My experience with this cookbook was sort of like that - engaging on many levels. Presentation is mucho importante and the Girls have it down. The book itself is gorgeous to look at. I'm serious -the rich colors and a few glossy pics of the fabulous looking food add a very nice touch. The recipes are serious get your man creations. Everything from baked macaroni and cheese and southern fried chicken to salmon with brown sugar glaze and homemade vanilla ice cream with brown sugar peaches. Um-um!
This cookbook is for the novice entertainer, the newly attached (or trying to become attached) and the seasoned cook. Still not sure what wine to serve with what or exactly where to place that salad fork? Let the Get `Em Girls Guide you. Before you even embark on your foray into the culinary arts you'll need to "take stock" of what you have in the pantry and in your cabinets. They have thought of everything.
Not only do they provide awesome recipes but they also place the recipes in easy to prepare menus for all occasions. Your man having guests over for Super Bowl Sunday? Look no further turn to page 98 for tips on the game (football 101) and a winning super bowl menu. Is your sweetheart feeling a little under the weather? Turn to page 77 and try some "Soups and Salads for the Soul" along with some tips on keeping him occupied. Already know how to throw down in the kitchen? You'll still love the menu ideas and the new twists on some traditional recipes. Who wouldn't love some fresh ideas for quick (30 minute) but hearty meals? It's all in there.
My only complaint - if I could even call it that would be that the book is not hardcover. I have already begun to use mine and I'm not sure how it will hold up over time. I surely can't let it out of my kitchen!
If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach then this cookbook will get you there. What you do when you get there is on you! Well... unless you need some advice - they thought of that too - page 145! Happy Reading.

2 comments about African American Foodways: Exploration of History and Culture (The Food Series).
- "African American Foodways: Explorations Of History And Culture" compiled, organized and edited by academician and food history expert Anne L. Bower covers African American cuisines ranging from West African fare, to Caribbean influences, to South American traditions, to contemporary fusion dishes using 'soul food' ingredients that had their origins in American slavery. The seven knowledgeable contributors draw from history, literature, sociology, anthropology, and African-American studies to illustrate and demonstrate how food's material and symbolic values have contributed to African American cultural identities for almost five hundred years. Of special note is Anne Bower's own contribution, 'Recipes for History: the National Council of Negro Women's Five Historical Cookbooks'. "African American Foodways" is a model of modern and seminal sociological scholarship, as well as a welcome and highly recommended addition to academic and community library American History, Culinary History, Popular Culture, and African-American Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
- This was an awesome book. It is worth the purchase for anyone interested in African American food
