5 comments about HP Pavilion DV9420US 17-inch Laptop (AMD Turion 64 Processor TL64, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium).
  1. I love the keyboard size and the fact that it has a numeric keyboard already built in. The mouse is a bit "sticky" so I use a USB mouse. The screen is bright and clear, very easy to read and not hard on the eyes after long sessions. It is too heavy to tote around everywhere but that is not what I do with mine. I don't like the fingerprint magnet black finish although it does look nice when it's polished up. The only real problem I have with it is its constant freezes. I increased the memory from 1gig to 2gigs and it has helped it to run faster but has not done anything for the freeze issues. Would I recommend it? Yes, but with reservations about the cause of the freezing (not yet established) and would recommend buying extra memory before even opening the box. We have two of these machines in our family. Both perform similarly and both have those random freezes that just appear out of nowhere. UPDATE*** freezes appear to be related to video card driver requiring updates & compatibility issues with Vista. Problem reduced to occasional freezes compared to 2 or 3 per day before finding updated drivers.

  2. The good:
-Display. Screen is bright, clear. No dead pixels.
-Keyboard. Solid feel (compared to other laptops), full num pad.
-Lightscribe DVD. Used it several times. a little slow, but it works.
-Battery. No, it doesn't last all day. Two hours of wifi surfing and listning to mp3s isn't bad for a widescreen computer.
    -WiFi and bluetooth built in.
    -2GB RAM.
    -Dual SATA HDD.
-Dual head video. Nice for presentations.
-Built in ports (USB, Card reader, VGA, S Video, IR - came with remote, etc...)

    Take it or leave it:
-Touch pad. Prefer the textured pad found on other models.
-Speakers. Decent for a laptop, but when you boast "Altec Lansing" speakers they better sound great. These are good, not great.
-Web cam. Functional. Rate it below the mid range Logitech I bought last year.
-Pre installed HP software. I don't care for it. But with a little tweaking it doesn't get in my way. Someone else may apreciate it.

    The bad:
-Windows Vista. The only part of this computer I really can't stand. Sometimes Vista won't shut down. Sometimes when you turn it on it tells you it has recovered from an unexpected error even after it shutdown properly. I have installed all MS and HP updates. This computer should be much faster then it is.

    Summary:
This would be a 4 star rating if it wasn't for Vista. From a hardware / feature point of view it has just about everything.

  3. I got my HP dv9420us back in September 2007, and so far I have been completely satisfied in most respects. The processor (TL-64) is nice and fast, and multi-tasking has not been a problem. Also, the screen is nice and big, and watching movies on it is enjoyable. The only thing I don't really like is the GeForce Go 6150, it's a pretty average video card, although it has been able to handle most games I've tried on it (the most recent game I've played on it in Sins of a Solar Empire, which runs just fine.) So overall, I'd certainly recommend this laptop to anyone, although for hardcore pc gamers it's probably a little weak. Then again, if you want to have a really good gaming laptop, you'll have to shell out lots more money...

  4. I bought this laptop as a nice priced option only to discover, that the mighty monopolistic HP corporate approach would kill it for me.

This is a true 64-bit multi-core computer and yet HP is crippling it by installing the stupid 32-bit Vista Premium by default.

I tried to talk to an HP CSR 3-4 time to ask them for video drivers for XP 64-bit version I have a legal copy with license for a PC/Laptop. It was always a dead end call. At the end I escalated to the management, in which case they told me "It is our policy and I can not do much about it. Besides XP will not be supported for us by MS any more". So in short the old "good" MS + "designed for MS Windows" is playing a role here.

At the end of the day I cursed a few times and installed Fedora Linux 8, which is the only one working with the HP new BIOS protection, which prevents you from putting a different OS on their machine and is desperately crying for a class action lawsuit against monopolizing the market of hardware, benefiting the OS vendor.

  5. Purchased in December 2007. Loved the bells and whistles of this laptop and the display.

    The good news.......
In April HP support released a slew of software updates for this computer including a bios update. MS service pack 1 was also included.
After 6 hours of installing the updates the laptop runs flawless, faster and rock solid and great wireless range. I love it now. Awesome for DVD playback and spread sheets. It is now my primary computer.
Battery life can be improved in Vista setting tweaks to about 3 hours for video playback. Expect about 2 hours on normal usage.

Since then I have increased the operating speed by adding another Gig of memory (about $80.00) and replacing the hard drive with a larger faster 180 gig Sata 7200 rpm drive (about $120.00) and using the original drive in the second drive bay for video's and data. You will need a HP Sata drive caddy to install it (about $35.00). The mouse pad can be sticky due to perspiration.

    The original bad news....
Initially had intermittent web-cam and external USB devices along with loss of audio and changing of display settings and freezing of video playback and system lockup. Returning from hibernation or sleep mode would crash the system or programs would crash it. Just about every problem others had stated.
HP support solution was to do a system reload which worked until you added a USB device or 3rd party software.
I worked around the problems by reinstalling drivers and not shutting the computer down defeating the purpose of a laptop.

5 comments about Apple Powerbook Laptop 15.2" M8859LL/A (1.0-GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD-RW/CD-RW Drive).
  1. My 15" Powerbook G4 has lived up to every one of my expectations and more. I'm a teacher that uses both Windows and Mac computers on a regular basis. It wasn't until I had a chance to use OS X that I decided to purchase a new Mac laptop.

I already owned one of the original iMacs, but that computer is starting to show its age. The computer that I used the most regularly is the PC that I built for my wife last spring (AMD Athlon XP 1800 running Windows XP Pro). That computer has served us well, but like every other windows machine I've ever used, it has major software problems. Here's the defining reason to buy a Mac over a PC. Apple integrates their software into their hardware designs. Microsoft on the other hand has very limited control over the hardware design of computer manufacturers. Thus, Windows tends to have more issues with hardware/software conflicts. Once you try OS X and all of Apples applications (iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, Safari), you will realize that the power of this Powerbook is at the heart of its software.

I have yet to see a PC laptop that can match the elegance of the Powerbook G4 and the sophistication of OS X. Sony comes close, but they will remain one step behind as long as their computers run Windows.

On the other hand, my Powerbook and OS X is completely flawless. This laptop, like every other that I've ever used, gets quite toasty on your lap after you using for 30+ minutes. There's a simple fix for this though. I just put a blanket or a pillow underneath the computer when I use it on my lap. Other than that, I have "0" complaints. The screen is beautiful. The 1GHz processor makes computer "feel" quite snappy. And the built-in DVD-RW, paired with iDVD, is awesome!

My best advice for anyone considering the purchase of this Powerbook is to test it at an Apple Store, borrow one from a friend, or just buy it. You won't regret it!

  2. Mine is actually a generation back (800MHz processor). It's more than fast enough for the things that I do (graphic design, mathematics, music recording, programming, internet browsing... can you tell I have catholic interests?) The Apple bundled apps are fantastic, and iPhoto incorporates enough of what I do to my pictures that I rarely open PhotoShop any more (not to mention the permanent retention of the original photo is always a good thing). I rarely reboot the system (it's just not necessary unless I do an OS upgrade), or close applications and all is well. It's nice to have Word, Excel, Safari, iTunes, Eudora, Illustrator and InDesign all at the ready at a moment's notice.

Perhaps most exciting is the realization that with this machine I just don't need a desktop anymore. My G4 tower gets only occasional use anymore (and the PC hasn't been turned on for nearly a year). This is easily the only computer you'll ever need.

  3. I freely admit, I am writing this at the sunset rather than beginning of the Titanium PowerBook's technological lifecycle. But, as a died in the wool Wintel person, what is really remarkable is that, after a hiatus of about 10 years, I have bought a Macintosh again. You can blame this on a combination of three things - one of my computers died, I needed a portable, and I just bought an iPod. Supporting the latter, and getting my ears onto iTunes was the deciding factor.

There is no question that the Titanium is a superb computer. It is every bit as fast as my Pentiums, it is beautifully designed, and the 15 inch screen is a big plus for my tired eyes. But what is really amazing is the overall slickness of the operating system and its standard software. I was setting up a wireless network for myself when I bought the PowerBook. Literally the only thing I had to do to get it to fit in was to tell it to activate its internal Airport. Meanwhile, I am still fighting glitches in my windows machines. I plugged in my iPod, my cell phone, and my PDA and when I ran iSync I got all three devices and the Powerbook to synchronise. And this is typical of OSX's approach to seamless operation.

The Powerbook excels at graphics and music work, and that is where my interests lie. The included software provides basic functionality which can be fleshed out with a host of excellent software. And the Powerbook is certainly strong enough to run them. With a built in DVD burner as well as both USB2 and FireWire 400 connectors you can accessorize and gadgetize this machine to your hearts content.

Of course, there is a price to pay. OSX is different at heart than any Windows OS. Not in big ways, but in countless little deviations that will take a bit of acclimatization. Even purchased software life Microsoft Office will do unexpected things on occasion. I heartily recommend that you don't fall for Apple's "you don't need a manual" hype and go out and buy one of those 700 page volumes that ramble their way through the host of Macintosh features. The more you find out about this machine, the better it gets.

  4. I love this powerbook. It is without a doubt the handiest computer that I've ever used. The wide ratio display makes it easy to have multiple coding windows open while the convenient brightness controls allow me to work easily in changing light conditions. The mute button is handy whenever the phone rings.

But that's just the start of the story. The really beauty of this laptop is that it runs OS X. Mac OS X represents the pinnacle of evolution in operating systems. The highly intuitive environment lets a user get their work done without having to really think about the computer. It is more or less a seamless interaction. But if you need to leverage the UNIX core, it is just a terminal window away and gives you all the power you could possibly seek.

  5. The Titanium G4 PowerBooks are in their final state of evolution. Rumor has it that the new version will be radically different in design. As such, I would take advantage of this final incarnation of the Ti Book because it has gone through all of the refinements and fine tuning that has put it at the top of the game. Sure, the newer model will have more bells and whistles -- but keep in mind that it will also have a lot of things needed to be tweaked and adjusted. The Ti Book has had several generations of refinement and is now perfect, solid and reliable. Remember, a computer is only as good as the work you do on it and this Ti Book has a long pedegree to back it up and years of refinement that have brought it to its optimal (and final) version! Buy it before it is gone. It's quite simply the ultimate computing machine!

5 comments about HP Pavilion DV6770SE 15.4-inch Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-62 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium).
  1. I use a Dell (my work computer) but when I wanted to buy a laptop for my two teenage daughters I picked this one. It seems to have enough features for them to enjoy now, and it probably should last them 2-3 years (seems to be the life expectancy of a laptop, at least for me). They play a lot of video games on it and the processor is fast enough to keep up with the graphics.

My sons all own Apples and usually swear by them, but sometimes (when they play video games) they swear at them. So far I think that I make the right choice with this computer.

  2. HP Pavilion DV6725US 15.4" Entertainment Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-60 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium)

  3. I was hoping for a little bit better operating speed but the graphics card makes up a plenty for 3D games. I run Flight Simulator X and it runs smooth at all but the very highest settings and then it is only a little jerky.

  4. This special edition laptop has it all. Price, features, quality..3 months ago I reasearched every brand feature and associated cost and selected this lapatop for myself. Then my wife needed one too so I went thru the same process and still selected this laptop so we bought the second one...for $200.00 less then the 1st. Very happy with these purchases and saved the sales tax by using Amazon.con...such a deal!

  5. I bought this laptop about a year back and right away installed Windows Vista professional edition. I love this laptop with one exception, the key board is badly designed. The mouse pad is extremely sensitive and it is very common that while type my had would touch the keypad and courser would move to a different location without my knowing.

5 comments about Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/N 14.1-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Gold.
  1. I purchased this lap-top as a birthday present for my wife, having had experienced excellent performance with a VAIO that I purchased for myself in back in 2004. I was a bit leary about making an on line purchase of such a potentially fragile item. Those worries were put to rest upon delivery, as it was apparent that extra care had been taken to ensure that delivery was prompt, and the product arrived in good condition.

My only regret in making this purchase, is that I didn't pay more heed to the concensus on reviews of the VISTA operating system (which came pre-installed on the unit). In the past, I had always heard of, (but pretty well dismissed) all of the negative publicity surrounding the release of a new O.S., because I had never experienced any insurmountable problems with O.S. up-grades over the years, some just took some getting used to. With VISTA however, you can add me to the list of "whiners". So many things are incompatible, and there are so many "unexplainable" malfunctions, that after 3 weeks of unsuccessful back-and-forth communications with Microsoft Vista Support (via another PC I might add, as we were unable to even perform e-mail & on-line functions with VISTA), I finally gave up & "up-graded" to XP. Things have been fine since then.

  2. So I read the reviews on here before buying this laptop 3 months ago (thanks!). I bought it for a long backpacking trip - so I wanted something smaller, with long battery life. The reviews here said the battery life was not what it advertised, and the screen can be pretty dim - impossible to see outdoors when you're on low power consumption mode. They were right on both counts. I would not count on more than 2.5 or 3 hours of battery, even just to type or surf the web, and if you're outdoors, maybe less since you'll have to boost the brightness of the screen.

Other than that, after it's gone through all the start up - and all the preloaded programs, it's reasonably fast and a good size for travel, though I think I'd go even smaller for a trip like this - it's a good balance overall. The keyboard is very nice, but the keys click when you type, I'm not too crazy about that, and there is no "end", "page up", etc... which I quite miss.

  3. UPS lost the package, however Vann's was great and got me a very quick refund.I would buy from Vann's and Amazon again.

  4. My excitment of owning a vaio all went into the drain when I got first hand experience of its performance. In general its processing speed is worse than a pentium 3. And I dont have anything saved on my hard drive since I mostly use it for internet browsing. Everytime I switch on my computer I wonder what will go wrong in the processing today. e.g. internet browsers take ages to open, or if you type its takes ages for the text to appear. I have tried everything possible.

Sony is unwilling to admit that they have a defective model. I would not recommend anyone to buy this. HP, IBM or Dell will provide you with better processing speed. Otherwise you are buying a model claiming to be a core 2 duo and you are getting pentium 2 or 3 at best performance. So if this laptop cant take internet browsing... then if you do more stuff I am not sure how it will take.. it may just crash. So BEWARE!!

  5. This is the third laptop I've owned and it is by far the best. When I originally started researching laptops I was reluctant to look at Sony because they always seemed overpriced. After reading reviews, like this one, I decided what the heck you get what you pay for and let me tell you this machine is awesome. Unlike the Dell, and HP machines I owned before this one is light, fast, and very portable at just over 5 lbs with a 14.1" screen. Let me say the only reason that I didn't give this VAIO a 5 star rating is because like many others I HATE all the pre-loaded software that come on a new computer and this one seemed to have more than most. Once I uninstalled all of that stuff and tidied up the hard drive this thing zooms. One other small drawback is that the standard battery doesn't last much more than two to three hours. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this laptop.

  1. We've had the PC for a a few days. Seems fine but it's very slow compared to my work's old XP machine. The only metrics I have is that the boot time is 2 minutes 10 seconds. The rest is consistent with that.

  2. Very robust machine for the price - I run Office Pro 2007, and it handles it great (my old Satellite really got bogged down opening programs). It's also great for multimeda applications.

Not sure about the slow boot time noted by another reviewer. Possiby all the new "welcome" programs are still loading at start-up? Never had a boot time run close to a minute since I unloaded that stuff.

The one adjustment I've had to make is getting used to the right 'shift' key. It is small, like a regular key, not double width like I'm used to.

  3. The laptop is great, but suppouse the condition was new, but under the sticker say 90 days of warranty........to bad
