- We bought a Gateway and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but Gateway.

5 comments about Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV425 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250, 2 GB RAM, 300 GB Hard Drive, Vista Ultimate).
- I have had nothing but trouble with this Qosmio computer. Don't buy it.
No support either period from Toshiba..they just keep referring me
to Microsoft.
Save yourself lots of time, money, and headaches. Don't Buy Toshiba.
- This is a pretty cool computer with great media features BUT it has the poorest battery life ever and it's always overheating, not to mention it weighs a ton.
Although the screen is bright and the sound is amazing I still Will not recommend.
- First of all Amazon sent me this laptop priority overnight (arrived the next morning, two hours after the e-mail notifying me it had been shipped) after I signed with a free trial of Prime. They also gave me a $100 discount toward the Qosmio purchase because I purchased two HD-DVD players from them back in late 2007 (when HD-DVD and Blu-ray were battling it out). What can I say? Amazon rocks! :-)
When my five-year old Medeon laptop died a few weeks ago I agonized whether to get a new laptop with HD-DVD or Blu-ray for under $1,000 as a replacement. I love high-def movies and own more HD-DVD's than Blu-ray now, but plan to get more Blu movies in the future. The Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV423 is the ideal laptop for my high-def viewing needs right now. If you value CPU horsepower, hard drive space, speedy performance, 3D-intensive computer gaming or anything not involving HD-DVD viewing (or prefer Blu-ray) there are better deals/laptops elsewhere. For road warriors that want some HD-DVD love on the go this Qosmio delivers the goods.
When hooked to my HDTV with an HDMI cable the F45-AV423 recognized it as a 1920x1080 LCD and filled the screen properly (at 1080p/60Hz). I had to turn off the laptop display on the Qosmio to see HD-DVD movies on my HDTV (regular computing applications can have both screens on). Except for some sparkles (visible only when I was really close to my HDTV) my HD-DVD movies looked as good on my TV set as my XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on (component) or Toshiba HD-A20 player (HDMI). I changed the laptop's sound output from 5.1 to 2.0 stereo and 2.1 surround, and that was reflected in the HDTV's speakers. Don't have a surround system but SPDIF is supported for surround systems without HDMI inputs). If you want to use a laptop as a primary or back-up HD-DVD player connected to an HDTV (surround system notwithstanding) the F45-AV423 passes muster.
Using the default Toshiba HD-DVD player software 18 of 20 HD-DVD's I tried on this laptop (including notoriously unreliable Universal combos like "Children of Men" and "Hollywoodland") played without a hitch. Downloading the newest/latest WinVideo program (which also supports Blu-ray) might do the trick for the few HD-DVD movies (like "American Gangster") that won't play. Even at 1280x800 on a 15.4" screen (which isn't true widescreen and has black bars) HD-DVD movies were much sharper than regular DVD's. My "Hot Fuzz" HD-DVD looked incredible (slight glare from a brightly lit room notwithstanding) and the sound was no slouch either. The Harman Kardon speakers and small subwoofer in this Qosmio are a step above the crap-for-sound audio from most laptops. The drive loads, plays and ejects discs (DVD or HD-DVD) silently, an improvement over the vacuum cleaner sound of my old laptop's drive spinning furiously when playing a disc. Other regular computer applications (computer games, web surfing, webcam, etc.) worked fine while an HD-DVD disc played, neither blazingly fast or agonizingly slow. And from a stylish point of view the black & white colors, combined with the button interface (love the wheel volume control) give this Qosmio an attractive look.
Its not all roses though. A battery that lasted 75 minutes after turning off all unnecessary applications (and a full recharge) hinders the F45-AV423's ability to function as a truly portable HD-DVD player. Even when not in use this laptop's battery loses power when the unit's unplugged. I knew when I bought this model that Qosmio laptops in general have poor battery life but this is ridiculous. Also having to settle for the 1280x800 rez of the F45-AV423 screen might not be easier for perfectionists used to the ultra-sharpness of 1080p. The amount of bloatware Toshiba shoves into the hard drive is a nuisance to get rid off. I don't use bluetooth but its exclusion in this supposedly advanced multimedia Toshiba model is puzzling (especially since its included in lesser brands/models). The laptop/keyboard looks great but the ergonomics feel a little bit flimsy and made of cheap plastic, like an expensive toy that you don't want to abuse for fear its going to break. The all-white keyboard and black exterior are just begging to get dirty and/or fingerprint ravaged. Depending on extensive usage you might also want to note that the F45-AV423 overheats a little around the portion that connects the screen to the keyboard (the plasticky construction material doesn't help). Did I mention the battery charge lasts less than the length of an average Disney feature-length movie?
In conclusion, if you're reading this you're either bargain shopping or want an HD-DVD laptop because you've invested (or were burned, take your pick) in HD-DVD movies. Everything else the F45-AV423 can do besides HD-DVD a lot of other computer brands/models can do just as good or better for less money. What the F45-AV423 offers is the most affordable path to portable HD-DVD entertainment from the company that created the now-defunct format. You're expecting reliability you're not sure you'll get from the few Acer or HP HD-DVD laptops still floating around. Whether HD-DVD is important enough for you to invest on this Qosmio model depends entirely on your portable computing needs and how many high-def movies you own (or plan to keep). Me? I love HD-DVD, plan to keep it (and buy cheap HD-DVD movies whenever I can find them) and want a laptop I can take with me to play some of that high-def goodness. For my particular needs (which might or might not mirror yours) the Qosmio F45-AV423 delivers the goods at an attractive price. Highly recommended, and will update is something happens (good or bad) over the next few weeks/months.
- Like others have said, this has terrible battery life. The longest I've had it last is an hour and 15 minutes on the Power Saver mode. I haven't even tried the High Performance setting without it being hooked up yet. It is also a big hefty and transporting it can be a problem sometimes. Also, the top gets easily scratched up (in my case at least).
However, I've had no problems with it overheating and it's pretty good for most video games. It runs pretty smoothly and rarely gets stuck thinking.
I'm a video gamer, and this will run most semi-current games without a hitch, all settings at max, so long as they're not CPU-intensive. BioShock will run like a dream; Mass Effect, not so much (but there is a fix to make it much more playable).
I would recommend this to anyone who wants a semi-fast machine that can run movies with ease. Just make sure it's connected to power before you start.
- I have had mine about six months, and am impressed. I owned a Toshiba before this one, so I like the brand and return to it.
First of all thank you Toshiba for still including an actual HD DVD recovery disk. Most computers expect the consumer to make their own. The fit and finish on my unit are perfect. Very solid feel with stylish looks. The screen is beautiful. It is bright and clear and mine has no dead pixels. Keyboard seems great to me, though some express concerns, mine seems very solid and responds perfect. I had never used a fingerprint reader before, but am a believer now. It works great, and helps with security.
Everything i want for this little guy so powerful and i can bring it where i want...trust me
Good Product, Excellent!!!

- You can buy a better one at officedepot for less than 600. I bought one with 250GB HD, 2GB RAM in March 08.
Venezuela
- I purchased this laptop on April 9, 2008 after reviewing the specs with a close personal friend. This laptop is awesome. I love the 250 Hard Drive and the 4 GB RAM. Vista Ultimate is a definite plus. This is the second laptop I have purchased from HP, however, the first time I have purchased electronics from Amazon, and the entire experience of buying on line from amazon was an excellent choice. This laptop is loaded and is very fast. The graphics on the screen is brilliant. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase.
- I hate writing bad reviews for products that i own. Unfortunately i would like to share my experience with this laptop. At first few months it was ok, but after 5 months of hardly using, one time it just stop working and it wont charge. So i sent it to local HP tech and they told me that it a motherboard problem and they need to change it. This time it was still under warranty so i didn't need to pay any bucks. but after 4 months which the warranty of the HP expired again it stopped working and same problem was diagnose and now i have to pay for $500 just to fix and replace the motherboard again. I have 4 different laptop and 2 of them are HP, but this model isn't that good enough to last.
- That's a laptop that was buy by a buddy with my account, a really hard work laptop, he use it everyday at work, at home, leave it all night downloading. A high quality product.

- i bought this laptop (typing this review on it now) a few months back when it was sold my amazon.com for only $[...] and i must say it is well worth it!
it has a built in blu-ray player which works like a charm, 320 GB hard rive enough to save EVERYTHING you can possibly download. NVIDIA GeForce 8600 clear, vivid picturing and video and gaming!
believe me it is WORTH every penny!!!
- I purchased this laptop in February-use it daily and have never had one problem with it. I wouldn't buy any other kind than HP and if the house burns down, the kids will have to fend for themselves-I'm saving the laptop! I have recommended it to many people!!
- This is the worst computer I have ever owned. I had it for a week and got so frustrated that I erased everything and put XP on it to find out they don't make the device drivers for XP. How convenient. I can't install any of my software on it. Some programs I paid hundreds of dollars for.
- I've had this beauty since May '08. I tried Windows Vista for a few days, but I really hate it, can't stand it, so I went back to good old Windows XP, after researching a little over the internet I found a complete list of the drivers, and yes, they all work perfectly, so since may 15 I've been using XP and I'm loving it. Also I've recently installed Kubuntu 8.04 and although I'm having some problems with the wireless and ricoh card drivers, it rocks.
I totally recommend this PC.

5 comments about Sony VAIO VGN-FZ285U/B 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Blu-Ray DVD Drive, Vista Ultimate).
- The laptop is shipped with MS Windows Vista which I had not seen before. It took awhile to figure it out (like how to configure an administrator ID...it ships without one). The only real "problem" I had was that it wouldn't play blu-ray DVDs until I downloaded the latest driver...that was a bit annoying. I humbly think I'm pretty computer savy so I have sympathies for folks who can't figure out Vista and drivers. Anyway, now I am very happy with the laptop. It is really fast and the WI-FI receiver seems to be very sensitive. As I had read in other Vaio reviews, the battery (as shipped) life is not on par with other laptops available. This is not a big issue for me, but if it is for you then I would recommend ordering the heavy duty battery. Also as I read in other reviews, there is a lot of advertising and trial software installed. Since I haven't purchased a computer in a while, maybe this is now the norm.
- While overall, this is a good machine, Sony disabled the option to record audio signal, which makes recording streaming web audio impossible, as well as taking advantage of features of audio and DJ software. Apparently, the reason behind disabling the feature, which has been available until Vista, is concerns about piracy, but no other computer manufacturers has done it! So, go with a different computer.
- This notebook is just outstanding, truly one of the best out there, but with just one caveat: you absolutely have to get rid of all the useless software and do a bit of optimization of the preloaded software first for you to see the true potential of this machine. Be aware that this does require some knowledge of PCs and some familiarity with adding and removing programs, however, so make sure you know what you're doing before you start deleting things.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the form factor: it's very thin, the case is metal (magnesium), and has a sort of understated elegance to how it looks. The screen is amazing -- easily the best or one of the best notebook screens I've ever seen, including Macbook Pros -- crystal clear, as bright as a desktop display, and with extraordinary color reproduction (essentially uses the same technology as their stellar Bravia TVs).
But when I booted it up for the first time, I was dismayed to see the sheer amount of advertisements, trial offers, and other "bloatware" it came with. Everything from Spiderman 3 movie downloads and wallpaper, to Sony's "toobars," it was unbelieveable, and it slowed down the machine unnecessarily. I spent probably about 30 minutes to an hour uninstalling all this; for the most part all you really need to do is use "add/remove" programs to clean up 95% of it. But once you get all this off the machine, you'll realize that it was worth the aggravation -- there is one seriously fast notebook underneath all this after all!
If you are a serious gamer, you will most likely want to pass (but you wouldn't be looking at Sony to begin, right?), but if you are a casual to moderate gamer, this machine actually does have some serious graphics chops to let you enjoy games when you feel like it. My machine was configured with the NVidia 8400 GT card, and with that and just 2 GB RAM I was actually able to run any game I had on hand with more than adequate frame rates. For example, I am a flight simulator fanatic and I'm actually able to play Flight Simulator X on high settings with 40 fps! Probably the most surprising was that I can actually run Crysis quite well (but only using DX9). This is amazing performance for a machine that's not dedicated necessarily to gaming.
But this model is not without its weaknesses and for this machine it is definitely the battery. On maximum energy saving mode, I am still only able to get approximately 1 hour, 40 minutes from a full charge -- not quite enough to get through a DVD movie on the plane, for example. This may or may not be a drawback for you, depending on what you'll use this notebook for, but for me it wasn't an issue as I don't travel with my PC that much. There is an extended battery pack available which will increase the battery life considerably, but it adds a lot of weight and bulk so I opted not to get it.
All said, I am very pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a sleek mulimedia notebook. With all this performance in a thin, elegant package and with one of the best screens you can get, it has given me true pride of ownership. Just remember that you do have to spend some effort up front getting rid of the horrendous bloatware, but once you do, you'll have a truly excellent machine to take around with you.
- I purchased this laptop in January 2008. Everything worked well in the beginning and the all of a sudden everything would freeze after the laptop was idle for 20-30 minutes. It was happening 2 - 3 times a month and then it started happening more frequently (5 - 6 times a day). Every time it would freeze I would have to press the power button 6 seconds so the laptop would restart. The Sony technical support advise me to perform a Recovery. During the recovery process an error came up and after contacting the Sony Technical support I was told to send the laptop to one of their service centers because the hard drive had bad sectors and had to be replaced. I had the laptop serviced and the hard drive was replaced. Everything was working well for about one week when it started freezing again and crashing 4 - 5 times a day. I took it back to the service center and found out today that the motherboard has to be replaced. I tried to get a refund or a replacement but I was unable to do so. I only gave it one star because it's an expensive laptop and I find it unreliable.
- I felt great. screen was really bright.. the kind of sound (quality) was awsome very clear but to have volume you gotta put additional speakers.-
Cons: VISTA is AWFUL. and of course, lots of packages on trial or limited tryout...... BUT SONY IS SONY....

5 comments about HP Pavilion TX2110US 12.1-inch Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-62 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium).
- HP Pavilion TX2120US 12.1" Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X 2 Dual Core TL-64 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)
First the negative.
1. Because the HP Pavillion TX2120US comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system this has limited this hardwares ability to run some of the best Tablet PC software out there, such as Education Pak, Ink Desktop 2.0 etc... which are all Microsoft Products. I hope in the near future that Microsoft updates their software to run on their new 64 bit system.
2. Stylus: It's not that the stylus is super cheap but there are other stylus' out there that are definitely higher quality. ;)
3. Sound: Sound isn't horrible but it definitely doesn't deserve to get a "Great" rating either. Fact is anybody buying this tablet should know that the fingerpring reader, the screen, several buttons, the mic, the camera, and the sound all come from the screen which pivots on a very small joint. Which by the way is not cheap or flimsy.
4. DVD Eject Button: Now I understand that as a manufacturer you need to put the button in a place that if it accidentally gets bumped it won't pop open your drive but if you have big hands like I do than you might want to consider creating a DVD eject shortcut on your desktop like I did by downloading nircmd.dll. There are tutorials out there if you need help.
Now for the positives.
1. Screen: 5/5 Bright, clear, responsive to the touch and large enough to satisfy any user.
2. Battery: 4/5 I have read many places that the battery is only good for 3 to 3 1/2 hours of batter life but after I purchased mine and conditioned the battery (correctly) I was able to get between 4 and 4 1/2 hours of battery usage on "BALANCED" power setting.
3. Processor, RAM, and HD: 5/5 As far as a pc/notebook I don't think I could have asked for more in such a small machine. AMD Core Duo 2.20ghz / 4GB RAM / 250G HD... compare that to other machines in $1150 - $1400 dollar price range and you might find something with 160G HD and 2 maybe 3GB RAM. Not to mention the added bonus of having a touchscreen. ;)
4. Keyboard, and Ports: 5/5 I have read other reviews calling the keyboard "Cheap" or stating there aren't enough ports on the tablet but when you consider the size and portability of this machine it has more than enough to do the job. This machine has 3 USB, 5in1 Reader, 34mm Express Card, Expansion Port 3, Ethernet, Tele, S-video out, 2 headphone, and 1 mic slot. It also comes with a remote control that easily stows in 34mm express card slot.
5. FingerPrint Reader: 5/5 Before I purchased this machine I thought to myself what a waste this addition would be... WRONG. With the additionof the fingerprint reader it quickly and efficiently gives you access to your computer, files, email, banking, etc... and is easily programmable with their preloaded DigitalPersona software.
6. Loaded Software: 5/5 The reason I am giving this a 5/5 isn't because the software is so good it's because there isn't much "bloatware" at all. ;)
Final Thoughts:
This is an excellent machine for the price and I had been hard pressed in finding a machine that had as much goodies packed into it for the price. Whether you use it for business, education, or just for leisure I think you will find this to be more than a suitable choice for all of your pc needs.
I hope this helps!
- I bought the HP tx 2120 us at Fry's in Phoenix in early June, 2008. When I got it home, I could go no further than turning it on because someone at the factory had swiped their finger across the reader and it would not recognize anything I did. If I lived closer to Phoenix, it would have gone back to the store that night. Instead, I spend hours on the phone with an Indian tech who was worse than worthless. Then I spent more time with an on-line chat tech who was equally as bad. These people had no idea what to do other than to send out some recovery discs. I told them to send the discs but they never came. I decided to run all the diagnostics I could find and eventually, I was able to get it to allow me to swipe my own finger and I was finally able to use it. The next issue was when I tried to connect to my HP Laserjet printer. Nothing I or a local tech did helped get the two connected. Finally, I tried the on-line chat again. This guy was at least as bad as the others; he kept sending me to a site that had no way to download anything. Again, on my own, I finally managed to download the drivers and get connected.
The machine itself is a good one. I hear others complain about it getting hot and the "crapware". This one does not get hot and the stuff I did not want was fairly easy to get rid of. I am certainly not a a computer geek, but aside from what I mention above, this is a good easy to use machine and I am getting to along with Vista just fine. The only reason I do not give it five stars is the support. There is none. If you want a good machine, this is it. Just be aware that you will be entirely on your own. HP apparently is not interested in anything resembling support for their products.
- I bought the HP tx2120us which was cheaper than buying the same components and features separately. I did a lot of due diligence before buying this laptop. It over performs and I'm extremely happy with this product. I suggest you buy this product.
PROS
- Extremely fast processor (I often have more than 5 programs running at the same time (Word, Excel, Outlook, Firefox, PowerPoint, Abode PDF and Photoshop) with no significant slowing in speed or freezing or crashing)
- Large hard drive space (250 GB)
- Tablet functionality is incredible (it's amazing how well the pen works and recognizes handwriting without training. In fact handwriting is more easily recognized than print. The free addition of One Note greatly enhances the tablet function.)
- Fingerprint scanner (you can scan all 10 fingers if you want despite what some reviews are saying)
- Feature rich (WIFI, bluetooth, 3 USB ports, phone & Ethernet ports, DVD burner, etc)
- Size (The PC is just the right size for me. Not too small that the keyboard is difficult to use or screen hard to read. At the same time, it's not too large or heavy to carry)
- Touchpad. (the pad is award at first but the dimples on the pad make the cursor easier to control)
- Media (remote control, dual head phones and media playback is excellent)
- Eye catcher (while this is not really important, it's definitely feels good when you pull out your laptop and others in the room ooh and ahh)
- Vista 64bit ( I was concerned about Vista because of all the bad things i had heard about it. In addition I was worried about the 64bit version not working with my current hardward and software programs. Vista has been stable, fast and a pleasure to work with. In fact, Office 2007 works much, much better on my laptop than my Windows XP desktop. I only have one program that I could not load on the laptop. That's because the company hasn't written a Vista 64bit version yet but they claim it's on the way)
CONS
- Heat (as you do your research you'll notice everyone talks about how hot the battery gets. They are 100% correct. The base gets so hot that you can't leave it on your lap. I use a magazine or something else to place under the PC. I plan to purchase a cooler.)
- Battery (the battery life if fine for me. But the battery extensions 1 to 2 inches beyond the PC frame. It's a weird design. However, on the plus side the extension works like a handle when using the tablet function and holding the computer in your hand. Especially because the PC bottom is too hot to handle otherwise)
- Screen (the touchscreen has a film on it that dulls the screen somewhat. This a problem for some users, especially in sunlight. It a minor issue for me because the screen can be rotated to practically any position to avoid glare from light. And the screen dullness is minor)
- Pen string (the stylus/pen attaches to the PC via a string (not really a string) that extends well beyond the PC frame. It often catches on things which pulls the pen out of it's socket. It's another design flaw. Please note that you won't lose the pen because it is attached to the PC by the same string that causes the pen to become dislodged).
- Fingerprints (Another minor issue is that the stylist black cover is also a fingerprint magnet.)
- Young look (Another minor issue is for business users the PC looks like it's for the younger non-professional market. I use the PC for business and personal use and don't care about this because I only care about functionality. However, as a fair reviewer I think it should be noted)
On sum, this is an EXCELLENT computer. I originally purchased this laptop for road and travel but I love it so much I use it instead of my desktop. Buy this laptop with confidence."
- Got a TX2110US model, AMD Dual core X2 with 3 gigs of RAM and the 250 G HDD and boy am thoroughly disappointed with it or what? Should simply have stayed with an Intel based Dual Core. This system produces a lot of heat (will literally burn off your lap, if you hold it as a laptop!) and not to mention the fan noise; far from quiet by any means and only gets a Vista Performance score of 2.4 and you will easily notice how slow it runs when running even simple video editing or Photoshop editing.
Performance scores reported in Vista are below:
Processor calculations per second - 4.8
Memory operations per second - 4.6
Desktop Performance for Windows Aero - 2.8
3D Business and gaming Graphics - 2.4
Disk data transfer rate - 5.2
Vista seems to be worse than Windows ME with its intermittent "Auto restarts" and crashes, leaving one clueless most times. The HP Advisor program is the main culprit most times when it does leave a clue. The tablet drivers don't load up one or 2 out of 10 reboots.
(so much for using the tablet). The SD card reader quit in a month and had to mail the system for repairs. They had to replace the main board and ship back. After shipment arrived, there is a ding on the case! Now going through "Claims". HP customer service really sucks if you think Dell was bad! Do yourself a favor. don't fall a prey to its size and mobility. If you really need mobility, buy yourself a decent PDA. This can't stand upto the high demands of today's applications.
- What a horrible failure, if this was a human, it would be a bum on the streets for not working
- it overheats excessively, will literally burn your lap
- expect blue screen of death 2-5 times per week
- EXTREMELY SLOW
- HEAVY
- Touch Screen inaccurate
- it looks good on paper but acts as if its got half the performance it claims
- Windows Media Center cant be handled and crashes
- its quite loud
- Fingerprint reader needs to read 4 times to understand who you are...
- graphics card is horrible, but as is all on laptops
a bum on the streets if it were human - for not working.
