3 comments about SanDisk SDCZ8-016G-A75 16GB Cruzer Contour.
  1. I just received my 16gb Sandisk Contour replacing my loaded 8gb Sandisk Cruzer. From experience using the 8gb Contour, I knew that it would be much larger than my Cruzer, somewhat unwieldy because of the ill-conceived retractable cap, and inconvenient because of the lack of an easily identifiable colorful lanyard. I needed speed however, and current reviews of earlier versions of the Contour and my previous experience indicated that this thing was fast. I could put up with the other shortcomings for a significant speed increase. Here are the results of my first tests.

Using Second Copy (simple copy) and my 8gb cruzer I copied 4.28gb of various small files (6,597 in all) both to each USB drive and from each to the hard drive.

    Upload time -- Cruzer -- 26.5 minutes (2.69 mb/sec)
    Upload time -- Contour - 22.0 minutes (3.24 mb/sec)

    Download time -- Cruzer -- 5.5 minutes (13.0 mb/sec)
    Download time -- Contour - 5.5 minutes (13.0 mb/sec)

I have no idea where I got the idea that the Contour was faster than the Cruzer but it was basically a dead heat.

To be fair, a backup (upload) of changed files (50 in all, size unknown) was done in 1.5 minutes using the Cruzer and 1.1 minutes using the Contour. Is the speed difference only noticable when synchronizing a small group of files?

If anyone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it.

  2. I deliberated at length over whether to buy the 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Contour or the cheaper 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro. Finally reasoned that the titanium case on the Cruzer would be the better choice for a 16GB capacity USB, given that it would get knocked around over its lifetime. However I was disappointed to find that it is a fatter USB stick than usual. Because the USB slots on my Macbook are side-by-side, it is a tight fit to insert a second USB stick at the same time as the Cruzer.
Because any differences in speed between the Cruzer Micro and the Cruzer Contour are irrelevant to me, in retrospect I should have bought the slimmer and more compact Cruzer Contour - and it would have fitted into the small pencil case I carry in my handbag as well!

  3. This device performs as advertised but it is large, clumsy and hard to open. It is cool looking though. The thing is so slippery that it often requires two hands to slide it open.

5 comments about Linksys BEFSX41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Firewall Router (4-Port 10/100 Switch / VPN Endpoint).
  1. .

My cable modem supports speeds of up to 15Mbps--typically about 12Mbps download, and up to 2Mbps upload--typically 1.8Mbps. I have a Gigabit switch on the other side for my home LAN.

I picked one of these up because of the Linksys warranty. I never got to use that warranty because my first one failed within two weeks of heavy use, and the second one (a replacement) began to fail in a week. I was able to return both devices to Staples for an exchange and then a full refund.

To be fair, I push a massive crazy amount of data through each of these two units. I don't know whether the parts began to overheat and fail, but I found myself reseting the device once a day, and a few days later it was not working when I got up in the morning, wasting much of my time. And finally I needed to reset it three to five times in the span of an hour or two--I pulled them off-line when it got this bad.

As these were new units, I did not update the firmware. My feeling is these have been out a long time, and the firmware should have been up to date without my fussing with it.

These units might be ok if you don't need to download or upload a lot of data. If you are a power user, they just don't cut it. On the other hand, why should you have to reset it? A good router never fails.

Also, I noticed my download speeds were poor. My hunch is there is a bandwidth limit to the device that is far below that of cable modem speeds.

So the bottom line is this. It is a cheap unit, required reseting frequently, and probably--almost certainly has limited bandwidth. So it is clear, this is one to avoid.

A final hint, if a router had several gigabit LAN ports it will have higher bandwidth.

  2. I purchased this router 4 years ago and set it up in my office. Plugged in fine, worked right away, i really didn't use the VPN function so this review will not cover it.
I loved the option to block content by keyword or by website name, the communication speed was great, no problems at all until recently where it stopped assigning new DHCP addresses, and within a couple of hours i lost the ability to assign new static addresses. Mind you there were only 4 computers on the network. a Call to the tech support yielded no result since the router was out of warranty. Upgrading the firmware didn't help, hardware reset didn't help, Buying a new router solved the issue.

Honestly though i strongly believe that linksys's quality has been going down lately. I own several linksys routers and they all have at least one annoying issue.

  3. Constantly breaks down, have to reboot. I've owned this router for 3 months and have 3 months of on and off performance - keep away!

  4. 2 1/2 months into using our new Linksys BEFSX41 router I went to connect to the Internet and the router was dead (this was last night...I'm using an 8 year old HP Gateway Router right now). I have included what lead to my reason why I only give the router 3 stars to save others from wasting their time with product support.

With 25+ years of working with computer software and hardware, it didn't take me long to surmise that the power adapter was no longer functioning-it wasn't warm despite being plugged into a functioning surge suppressor overnight. I doubted it was the router that was the problem. My husband further tested the power adapter with a power meter and the adapter was indeed dead (we also checked another adapter that we knew was working to verify the power meter was functioning properly, it was).

I checked the Linksys web site to see about a warranty issue since it was past the 30 day Amazon warranty. I found that there was an option to replace a defective power adapter with no need to return the defective unit (that was a clue that there is obviously an "issue" with the power adapters if they have their own RMA Option). I figured "cool, this should be easy"...famous last words. I now needed to get an RMA# to have a new adapter sent...unfortunately, this meant calling the Linksys/Cisco "outsourced to god knows where" tech support (I have a better name..."waste of time NO-support".

I ended up having to call THREE times because the first person didn't give me an RMA# before hanging up (although he did agree with me that it was most likely the power adapter). My second call I was put on hold for just shy of 15 minutes with dead air before I finally hung up. My third and final call stuck me with an unbelievable airhead. After starting to ask me questions about an "ethernet card" (NIC), which had NOTHING to do with the router, she proceeded to ask me the same questions over and over, even though I had already answered her ("when did you buy the router?"...March 19th, "where did you buy the router?"...Amazon.com..."how many lights are on the front of the router?"...None, there's no power getting to it..."so the power light isn't even on?"....No. (this went for three rounds!)

Even though I explained that there was no power getting to the router because the power adapter was not emitting power, she proceeded to have me "reset" the ROUTER using the reset button. HELLO? There's no power getting to the router so resetting it won't do any good. I went ahead and held the stinking button in for 30 seconds. Now she says "how many lights are on the front of the router?"...NONE! There's no power getting to the router!... And do you know what her response was??? "Okay, your router is defective. You will need to return it"....I held my tongue. I didn't say what I really wanted to say to this poor excuse for tech support.

I got the RMA# I needed, checked the box for "replace defective power supply" option on the Linksys RMA web site page and proceeded with my request to have a new power adapter sent.

So, the moral of my story...If you can help it, avoid the Linksys/Cisco "tech support", because in my opinion, it's a complete waste of time and another fine example of useless foreign outsourcing...corporate America, BRING THE JOBS BACK TO THE U.S. for pete's sake!

  5. I got this router when out company switched to VPN for remote desktop connections to increase security. This is one of the worst routers I have ever used, and I returned it to Amazon after about a week. The longest uptime I have ever seen was about 12 hours. Their support was horrible, and told me that they would not support the product at all if I upgraded the firmware from their website. I have since switched to netgear VPN routers, and those have been up for about 2 years now. I used to recommend Linksys, but now I tell people to stay away, or carefully check the model and version number, and compare them to the reviews.

5 comments about Cyber-Blue Bluetooth v2.0 Class 2 Slim Dongle.
  1. This item is dirt cheap, and is working perfectly. I bought it so I could transfer files from my nokia to the computer. From opening the package to being fully operational, it took me about 5 min. Windows XP recognized the device, and I didn't even need to install the driver that came with it. There is no need to spend more on a bluetooth v2.0 dongle. In addition to being a great product, "dongle" is really fun to say.

  2. I'm sure this device works fine when it works. It comes with a somewhat old version of the WIDCOMM bluetooth drivers, that doesn't include drivers for XP x64. I found a newer WIDCOMM driver (v 5.0.1) after searching around, but even though it has some x64 drivers, it does not have one for this device. So, I am unable to use it with Windows XP x64.

  3. This is a waste of money, the software is a nightmare and nothing else works with it. I'm not going to even bother trying returning it because it was cheap. I guess I get what I pay for, but still it didn't even do anything. Avoid at all costs.

  4. I find myself fairly knowledgeable about computers, enough that I should have no problems installing anything. I bought this to use with a mouse, PDA, and stereo headset. I can't get this thing to work with any of these devices. The software that ships with this is a nightmare and I can't figure it out.

  5. I would not suggest this USB Dongle to anyone, it flat out doesnt work. I plugged it in and ran the software that came with and got it to recognize the device. I was able to view my Cell phone and Wiimote for about a minute before I left to go to work. I come home and try to do it again and the device was not recognized. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and no luck, 1 led lights up briefly when I first plug it in but that is all. I also tried using Bluesoleil as a driver instead of the software and it doesnt recognize the device, Windows XP reads it as a "Unknown USB Device" and theres nothing more to do with it. Cheap yes but you get what you pay for.

PS. Customer support is nonexistent for Cyber Blue. You literally have to call China to contact them, and its labeled as a sales line.

5 comments about HP Deskjet D2430 Printer (CB614A#B1H).
  1. the printer meets all the needs for what i have to copy.i knew when i purchased it that it would fulfill the necessary jobs i do.thank u for the speedy delivery of the product and i would recommend it to my friends who don't perform heavy copying jobs.

  2. This HP deskjet was initially picked to replace one which suddenly went belly-up and used the same numbers of cartridges, of which we had several spare- more money in cartridges tha a new printer would cost. Turns out that this purchase of convenience was one of the best ever. This printer is fast, efficient, the software and hard/soft connections smoother. In all regards this printer is well worth the price, and that was much lower than I thought it would be.

  3. The quality of this printer is great. The only thing that I really don't like about it is HP has something that it wants to "update" almost on a daily basis.

  4. This product is simple and to the point. If you need a printer only, then this is the way to go!!

  5. I was planning to buy this printer from Amazon for 45 dollars. All good and well. The supplier was Skybox USA.

But then, one week later, after I added it to my cart, lo and behold, it wouldn't move from my "saved items" to my actual shopping cart.

So naturally, I come back to this page, only to discover... Skybox has been replaced by this insidious "Toyzz" supplier, and the price doubled to 92 dollars, plus shipping! What is this? So I did some more searching, to find other sites sold this for... $30-$45 dollars!!! What kind of outrageous company would dare replace another supplier.. and then double the price?

Do not buy from this "Toyzz" supplier!

5 comments about Wacom Intuos3 SE 6x8 - Special Edition.
  1. I have been saving for a long time to purchase this product and I just love it

  2. I never used a tablet before, and few reviews I had read said that it was hard to work with the pen looking at the screen. It just took a couple of days using it with Photoshop, Flash, Fireworks and video games to get used to using it instead of the mouse. I am still trying to improve my ability with the pen, but I am finding more and more, I can speed up my designs and get a little more accuracy and I am sure the more I use it the better I will get with it. I would definitely recommend the Wacom Intous 3 SE 6 x 8 for graphic design, and web design. I have a wide screen 20" monitor and it adapted to it quickly. The pressure sensitivity is a real helpful feature, by using increased pressure to make lines wider, or less pressure to make thin lines. Can't do that with a mouse. And being able to flip pen to erase is a feature I have used a lot for photo & graphic editing, it is so quick and easy. If the Special Edition is still available when you go to buy, it can add addition savings in the long run.

  3. This was a gift for my husband, but I have been loving it myself. It came with great programs, like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw. It sits flat and doesn't take up much space on the desk, and it looks nice too!

  4. Wacom Intuos3 SE 6x8 - Special Edition This pen tablet is one of the best for visual artist, designers, photogrpahers and any one else who is tired of being tethered to a mouse. The Intuos3 gives you much more creativity and exacting freedon than you could get from a mouse. It is intuitive to learn, but there is also a learnig curve. The best way to get comfotable with this tablet is to put your mouse in a drawer and use the tablet excusively. The only downside is finding enough room on a crowded desk for this, slightly larger than a magazine, tablet.

  5. While this tablet is not cheap, I think it is well worth the money. I've been using a tablet for over 10 years and consider it an essential peripheral for any computer I own. I bought this tablet to replace an older model, and I can already tell that this new one offers improved performance. Driver installation is simple, and the tablet automatically recognizes its own accessories. It knows the difference between the mouse, grip pen and classic pen. Very cool!

I think this special edition is more attractive than the standard Intuos 3. The tablet is covered with a clear acrylic and the black portions have a metalflake appearance. The installed overlay sheet is opaque, coated with platinum grey. This kit includes extras such as the Classic Pen, the parts set for the grip pen, and an extra overlay. The extra overlay is transparent. The parts set includes lots of nibs and an additional rubber grip. The last lets you delete the side button. I don't know why one would want to do that, but Wacom gives you the option.

The tablet features 10 programmable buttons and a pair of electrostatic sliders. These are useful, but I deactivated one slider because it frequently reacted to my hand's movement while I was drawing. The bundled software is also useful. I had not had the opportunity to try Painter. Even in this reduced form, it is a credible paint program with layers and some entertaining brushes. I plan to experiment more. The package includes a version of Photoshop Elements, but I have not tried it.

These were available everywhere at this time last year, but they are vanishing. They are no longer shown on Wacom's site. So, if you're in the market for a fancy, new tablet that works as advertised, it might be wise to snag one of these before they're gone.

5 comments about NETGEAR WG602 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Access Point.
  1. I got this to expand my wireless to the other side of the house and it works great. I had the WGR614 wireless router setup already and wanted wireless far away on the other side of the house. The house is already setup with cable run through it so setting this up was a breeze. I connected a cable from the router into the wall and from the wall on the other side of the house plugged a cable into the WG602 Access Point.
Just follow the directions by first connecting the AP to your computer to configure the AP and all is good.

  2. I've had two WG602v3's bridging between each other (through 3 walls and about 30 feet) for about 2 years. They are rock solid ALL the time, except when the power goes out. When the power goes out, it sometimes takes some finessing to get them to see each other properly again, but I just noticed there is new firmware released about 6 months back that appears (by the description) may fix this issue. Unlike some reports on here that state they need to power cycle it daily, I at least have never had an ounce of problems with my two v3 units (running firmware Version 1.2.2), other than than when the power goes out. I use WPA2-PSK AES for my security.

I think these could be a little bit of a challenge for someone not fairly comfortable with networking, especially if they use them in bridge mode; but this could probably be said of any networking gear with a similar use.

Great product in my eyes. Thanks Netgear!

  3. My title is my way of being kind. What I really wanted to say is that fits the term "POS" to a "T".

It will not perform well in an environment with more than 2 or 3 other access points - like in residential multi-dwelling units (apartments/condominiums) and/or office suites/towers for those brave enough to even try this unit in such an environment.

Yes, it's easy to install, and yes, it **should** perform well if you are the only one in your neighborhood who has discovered the beauty of wireless networking as of 2008. If this is your environment, then I guess this will work for you and at a great price.

However, if you are in more metro areas, where cordless phones exist, microwave ovens, etc., litter the landscape, and have neighbors as wired as you are, please stay clear of this unit. You are not saving money and only gaining aggravation. Spend wisely and go for newer units, costs more, but will be worth every penny.

    Issues:
    =======

    - constant disconnects/reconnects

    - it seems to have the weakest radio in the market, it will disconnect you even if you are literally 3 feet away if the channel is "packed" (re: other access points in the vicinity use the same channel)

    - it will not automatically adjust/change the channel for best reception, which isn't a fault, its the way it is (re: it doesn't have that feature)

    - if you need to change the channel, pray that you have a laptop, to access the unit directly (plug directly via Ethernet). As stated, auto channel selection isn't a feature of this unit, you'll have to change channels manually. The only way to do that is to connect directly - why? the only reason you'll have to is if you can't connect to it wirelessly (so if you can't connect wirelessly, you can't do anything).

  4. My laptop built-in wireless picks up more networks then this AP. I purchased this so that I could pick up MORE not LESS. LAME.

  5. I have several other Wireless-G routers, This one has the best
signal level and compatibily of any of them. Setup was a cinch
and the unit works extremely well.

2 comments about Q1 Ultra Premium Ultra Mobile PC.
  1. Edit: 3/26/08 - Five Stars *****
    Replacement unit is working perfectly!
    --------------------------------------

After a week of ownership I'll say this device does exactly what was expected and at a reasonable speed. Hard drive could be a little faster during bootup, but is responsive during general use. Given the tiny keyboard, don't expect this to be a laptop replacement.. rather a very portable computer for those not requiring lots of data entry.

I planned to use mine for couchtop browsing, light email, portable media entertainment, and to perform mobile wireless surveys for my occupation. By many accounts the previous gen Q1's and OQO's A110 cpu is underpowered, so I chose the Q1UP with a Core Solo processor.

    PROs: ---

Processor is well matched to the machine (no speed demon but not slow either). Programs start quickly, DVD rips play without stutter.

Beautiful and bright screen, web pages fit nicely width-wise and buttons make scrolling easy. Small fonts are extremely clear and readable (though some may have trouble with this). DVD rips and photos look great. (A remote would be nice!) Passive digitizer works well, and unlike my other tablet's active screen I love being able to use my fingers, reducing stylus usage somewhat. Haven't really done any inking so can't comment on palm-on-the-screen issues. You can play Solitaire with a finger!

With it's PSP-like shape it looks like it will be fun to play games. Mouse can be switched to joystick mode with a button press. Don't load Oblivion though.. its not meant for high-end 3D games.

Rear camera quality (1.3mp) is surprisingly good, at least as viewed from the screen. Front facing camera (0.3mp) is of decent quality and more than adequate for video chat.

Split-Qwerty thumb-keyboard: fine for short entry like URLs, filenames and short emails. Thank goodness this is the improved kb, as anything less would be quite difficult. Button size is similar to that of my Treo 700. I wasn't expecting to get much typing done this way but its so much better than always having to do tablet entry. Included is a program called 'Dialkeys' which throws a larger thumb-board on the screen and is better for longer entries.. it does eat up some screen space. Being left-handed, I like the mouse on the left.

Battery life seems good given this model comes with the extended battery. Watched a 2 hour DVD rip with screen on full brightness and still had 3+ hours of regular usage left. Rated life is 7.5 hours.

Comes with a USB cable for transferring files between computers. Plug both ends in and Voila', a file-manager-like program appears on both machines allowing easy transfer of files. No software installation necessary, it just works.

    CONs: ---

None really, except for an annoying problem with my unit: (Update: Unit replaced, problem gone!)

When picking up or otherwise handling the unit, the 'Play Camera' program starts and takes a picture. (Should only happen when touching the shutter button) Subsequent handling causes many pictures to be taken and after 5 minutes I might have 50 pics that need to be deleted. No use killing the program, as it will usually start up again. The shutter button moves freely and isn't bound up, so I don't understand why the slight case flexing causes it to take a picture. Oddly it doesn't always happen, but 75% of the time does. I'm hoping its a defect with my particular unit as I plan to swap it for the same model.

  2. Finally a UMPC that I am comfortable with. THIS IS THE ONE...
I am previous owner of fujitsu u810. I decided to change to Q1 ultra premium for a bigger screen & faster processer. I never regret that decision.

    Pros:
1)One of the most sexy UMPC Design in the market and very solidly built, It looks like it can withstand some minor fall.

2)Ultra responsive touch screen. Feels like Iphone touch type. No need to apply any pressure or use finger nails to poke. A light touch with your fingers will do.

3)Speaker Sound is very good compared to U810. At least it is not the ultra high treble tiny sharp sound. It resembles my Nokia N800 speaker but has 2 speakers located at extreme left and right and play MP3 and in stereo. However I wish the speaker could be louder.

4)LCD is very bright (brighter than my laptop) Viewing angle is superb, no distortion at extreme left/right. I can now share a video without people tilting the head too much to get a good angle.

5)Keypad has been improved. Good for light typing but is a pain to type long documents. The longest I will type using the keypad is "The quick brown fox jumps over the fence". Any longer I will be frustrated. However if u are a user of palm treo or black berry, U will find it very easier to type but eyeball still gets tired from looking at extreme left and right.

6)The fan is located at the top. This is a very good design as hot air blows right up to the top. Compare to U810 it blows directly on my right hand.

7)Locations of all buttons are very well thought out. I can hold this for hours with both my hand w/o feeling fatigue and be able to use all of the touch control and keypad w/o shifting my hand.

8)Device runs pretty cool even after 3 hours usage. Its only as hot as your phone when use it for an hour talk time. It is luke warm at most.

9)Battery life is very impressive. It last 4.5 hrs. I put LCD at almost full brightness, CPU and WIFI at max performance. I watch 2 hours of DVD video, follow by watching youtubes and finish off by listening to mp3 and web surfing at the same time. I really think I can hit close to 5.5hrs if I tune down everything.

10)There is actually HSPDA module slot if u dare to open up.

11)I like the fact that the Ipod look alike wheel is programmable. It can program up to 3 buttons for one click (eg. Ctrl+shift+a/b/c). I have program all 4 buttons.

12)Scrolling is a breeze. Lots of option to choose from. From the joystick mode to the arrow keys to finger sliding scrolling like Iphone.

13)7" display is easy on the eyes. I dun need to increase the dpi anymore or zoom in firefox.

14)The back stand has adjustable angle.

15)Device runs pretty quiet even at almost full load. U will not notice it if u dun observe it.

16)The performance totally blows me away. Performance feels like I am using my laptop. It runs DVD quality video smoothly, multi-task n opening and closing of program as fast as my laptop. I also upgraded the ram to 2gb (bought at amazon for $50 bucks). To make full use of the memory I set the page file to zero. Now everything runs from memory which means everything runs even faster now. Finally a UMPC that feels like the speed of Laptop. Very impressive for a UMPC

    CONS:

1)Mouse control is terrible. I know they have improved but still terrible. U810 definitely beat this flat. First of all its located on the left, Why cant they put in on the right like the other UMPC. Its like writing with my left hand. I have to hover around a link b4 I can accurately click on it. I really prefer the IBM little red dot where I can really "feel" the mouse. With this u are pushing the mouse button around rather than rolling your thumb for more control.

2)LCD screen looks like there is some protective plastic layer over it (I may be wrong). I prefer the old screen q1 screen where it is glossy. The new version looks like its neither matt nor glossy. Its half - half. But really it is not a big deal.

3)Wifi connection could be better. Its nothing wrong with it just takes longer to connect after I resume it. It is definitely slower than my Laptop. Not a big issue though. EDIT: May 5th: Its actually as fast as my laptop, I turn off the wifi batt saver.

4)Keypad could have a backlight. My Treo has it, U810 got 2 head lamp, why Samsung did not think of it. Its bad in the evening when the LCD is bright in contrast the Keypad is hardly visible.

    Conclusion:
The previous Q1 is a device I wanted to buy a long time ago but I hold off due to occasional stuttering when playing video. But the Q1 ultra premium is a total different animal. Its feels as fast as my laptop (I ran 7 firefox tabs, stream wireless Divx videos from my HP server, outlook 2007, words/Excel 2007, Norton 2008, ACDPhoto editor & many fancy widgets all at the same time) w/o a stutter. If u are looking for a portable device that can bring to office and to the couch with the power to run all your multimedia on gorgeous 7" display.... THIS IS IT....
Note: I gave it a 4.5 stars due to terrible mouse control. I actually disable it and use the touch screen instead.

Edit: I bought this at amazon for 1299. Its now 1,326.95

3 comments about SteelSeries QcK Heavy Mouse Pad (Black).
  1. Perfect gaming mouse pad. It's huge, it's heavy. Just make sure you look at the dimensions before you buy and make sure you got enough room.

  2. Basically compared to my old mouse pad anything else I bought could only be an improvement. So I went to a few lan parties and noticed most of the people there using the steel series brand at the time I was there for the console portion of the event, but after a while I decided to buy a laptop that I would be using heavily for gaming so after asking a couple of friends I decided to purcahse the Qck Heavy mouse pad. This has surpassed my expectations. It is enormous so you have plenty of room to play on the lowest of sensitivities on your favorite games, but the downside is your going to need alot of space to fully utilize this pad. I just let it hang of the table sometimes as a wrist cushion. The thickness of the pad also allows you to play on odd surfaces. So if your looking for a new mouse pad I would definitely recommend this just make sure you have some space available for it.

  3. I loved the size of it, its big enough for anyone and its really worth the price. I would recommend this to anyone who like a cloth surface.
