- Nokia seem to be experimenting with a different keyboard layout/feel. The N78 is a good attempt...but the numeric keypad requires you to have tiny fingers to type on the N78 (quite like the iPhone).
There are real cool apps that come with the phone...
-Message Reader converts your text messages to voice. Quite good quality.
-FM Transmitter makes your mp3 transmit to listen via your car stereo. The two loudspeakers make listening without a headset more pleasurable.
-PodCast allows you update your subscribed podcasts via WLAN. This is cool.
-Camera with video, even though with 3.2Megapixels, is easily usable in the same way as the N95.
The GPS is still quite a drain on the battery (as with N95), and not as useful as all the hype.
The Messaging app now confuses a little, it allows you to send an "Audio Message" via MMS, while send a "Message" includes text or MMS capability built-in.
- The N78-3 is the USA/North American (sometimes called the "NAM") version of the N78, the newest of Nokia's flagship N-Series phones.
I got the N78 a few days after it came out. I was moving up from a Nokia 6120 Classic. Compared to the 6120 the N78 adds alot of features, most important to me were: Bigger screen, GPS, WiFi, and a 3.2 MP camera.
While it succeeds on several points, on about 50% of the features the N78 falls down due to nagging bugs.
Physical Aspects & Controls
2.4" LCD screen is bright and clear
Buttons are a dismal choice of attractive design over function, they are needlessly difficult to use.
The shiny surface attracts face- and fingerprints, also the buttons attract dust in a pocket.
The new "Navi-Wheel" is unsupported in many applications (notably the web browser) and much less useful because of this.
The overall shape is pleasing, not as small as the 6120 but not at all the brick that is the N82.
The 3.5mm (standard) headphone jack is a huge improvement.
The lack of a charger jack on the bottom ruins any chance of a car holder/charger and for no reason.
The MicroSD slot is tough to reach but you don't use it often so not a big problem.
The plastic back flexes and feels cheap. The rest of the build feels solid.
The stereo speakers sound very good for their size.
The MicroUSB connector is pointless. MiniUSB is the same size and well-supported.
The Nokia cannot charge via the USB port. This is just plain silly.
The N78 in Use
GPS
The GPS works fairly well but compared to a $130 dedicated Garmin GPS it fails terribly. The N78 takes about 30-60 seconds to get a lock and Nokia's Maps program does not spin to make your current direction "up", North is always up instead (unless you're "navigating", and that's not free). For some unknown reason Nokia wants you to subscribe before you can use the navigation feature, your free subscription runs out in 3 months. I fail to see how navigation is an ongoing cost for Nokia (and therefore requires payment). Traffic info is not available for the USA. Google's free Google Maps for S60 is better than the Nokia Maps application in many ways, including traffic.
Messaging
The N78 has been plagued by email bugs since I got it out of the box. The automatic email retrieval function has never worked. First it downloaded all 3000 of the messages in my inbox without asking, and there's no option to limit that number or get rid of the headers in memory. I recreated the mailbox several times trying different strategies to get around the bugs with no luck. Today I discovered it deleted my entire mailbox all by itself. This all surprising since the 6120's email worked great and I don't see much difference between the two.
Web
The web browser works well but is also subject to many niggles. With the 6120 it tended to run out of memory, the N78 solves that. The "permanent" bookmarks and bookmark folders imposed by Nokia are annoying. You'll have to scroll past the "Nokia Graphics" folder a thousand times while surfing the web, you can't move it, you can't delete it. Thanks Nokia.
WiFi
The addition of WiFi seems to work pretty well but constant use drains the battery in only a few hours. Also for some reason every program that uses the internet seems to have a different list of access points. The web browser has a great "smart" list where it puts your known wifi's at the top if they are in range. Dozens of other programs though have a random jumble of access points. S60 really looks inconsistent in this area.
Bluetooth
I had serious trouble connecting with my Nokia CK-7W Car Kit. It sometimes drops the caller's voice entirely for 2-10 seconds. Or it drops the call completely. It's not usable. My Motorola S9 works fine. My Jabra headset has flaked out a couple of times, it never did with the 6120.
GPRS/Edge/3G
I had typical connection experiences with my T-Mobile edge-only plan. Of course T-Mo has no real 3G so nothing to report there. The 6120 works well with AT&T's 3G, I'm assuming the N78 does as well.
Camera
The 3.2 MP auto focus camera works great. Nokia fixed the dedicated camera button so it takes a sustained push to activate it, something I constantly did on the 6120. The autofocus and brighter LED mean this is nearly as good as a dedicated camera. Outdoor pictures are as good as my Canon SD200 used to take a few years ago. The photo viewing application is also better with a scrolling list of pictures and it auto-rotates the screen to use the landscape view.
PC Suite
I wouldn't normally mention the PC Suite, it's worked great for some time. Now however Nokia has removed some functionality for Vista users and this was not quickly followed by a fix. Annoying since my laptop uses Vista and that's where I sync my phone. Also there's still no way to sync with Google Calendar or Google IM contacts. Finally for some reason it takes upwards of 45 minutes to install! Even Microsoft Office installs faster.
Summary
I am hopeful that an upcoming firmware update will solve most of the problems. But the current version (10.136) is over 6 weeks old so the pace of updates is certainly lacking at the least. I'm fearful for the S60 platform because of this phone, it looks like a buggy hodge-podge of applications where every little change ripples through the system and causes bugs elsewhere. The N78 looks like a solid piece of hardware, well-designed except for the buttons. The software has many problems and I cannot recommend it. My own brother has a 6120 but I have told him to hold off until some of the more glaring bugs get fixed.
Update
2 months later and not a single firmware update from Nokia. No bugs fixed at all. I cannot live without my email and without my car kit anymore. I'm sending the phone back to Nokia. I'd give it 0 stars if Amazon would allow that.

5 comments about HP Pavilion Media Center M8100N Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium).
- The Good:
This machine can do great things, like fast video editing, decent play on games not requiring more graphics power than it has (i.e. few year old games), uses less electricity than my old computer, and in general is an attractive machine on most levels.
The Bad:
It's either Vista or the machine itself or a combination, but I crash out repeatedly trying to do resource intensive tasks like right-clicking (crashed explorer.exe 4 times this morning trying to move a file). Vista is also slow, bloated, and darned near unusable at times...How much of this is the machine and how much an abysmal OS, I can't say. My wife & some friends have Vista w/out nearly the problems, though.
The machine also runs pretty hot and the interior design is not great. It's got built in room for those HP media drives, but the bay seems to restrict air flow. Also, the only version of Linux I could find that would support the sound card was Knoppix, but it runs the volume really low, so Linux is out for the time being.
The Ugly:
I got the thing because it looked like an unbelievably great deal, far and away above the competition at the price range. A few weeks later, dropped in price and came with a monitor at a local store, confound it! Oh well, still good for the price.
**Update**
After Service Pack 1 for Vista the crashing has gone away, though Vista is still abysmal as an operating system. If you can, wait until the next version of Windows comes out, maybe it'll be slightly better.
- The fast processor and huge RAM didn't help with the performance when running Windows Vista. If you go to control panel, click system, and look at the system rating, this machine scores 3.0 out of base scores ranging from 1 to 5.9. The cheaper machine scores higher in desktop performance for having a better graphic card.
Here is a breakdown of scores for each component of this machine.
Processor (5.3), RAM (5.9), Graphics: Desktop performance for Windows Aero (3.0), Gaming graphics (3.0), Primary hard disk (5.8). The machine froze often and the computer runs super slow. It's slower than my old machine that has lower processor and less memory. I called HP and was informed that the machine came with onboard graphics chipset. If I need my computer to perform faster, they recommend to install a new graphic card. The machine can't even run youtube video or movie smoothly even I use wired cable internet. Even I reinstall the machine back to the factory setting, it didn't help at all. Worse investment that I've ever made. I now decided to buy a new graphic card to get out of this frustration. If you don't plan to upgrade your new machine, don't waste the time. Vista needs decent graphic card to for Windows Aero. Without it, this machine performance goes down the hill.
- Great service. Best CPU buy ever! Killer machine. Great bargain. Software needed several upgrades though.
- First of all, I read the specs before buying this PC, so will not leave a bad review based on my own lack of research. I was bummed to find out that it does not have a DVI port, the one thing I forgot to check out before buying.
This computer will work wonderfully for most users. It has plenty of speed, RAM and hard drive space for the average video and photo buff. If you intend to download a ton of movies, use it as you entertainment system and want the best video output options, I would look elsewhere.
I do watch TV on mine and it was VERY easy to setup with my cable. The picture quality is OK while watching TV and much better when watching an actual DVD movie. Remember that your monitor and cable will make a huge difference as well. Windows Media Center works great too. It comes with built-in movies to teach you step by step how to get the best sound and picture quality.
I bought mine for the price and the amount of ports on the front. Vista works great in my opinion. Some people may have issues, but it usually a driver issue and is typically the fault of the manufacturer of the device you are having an issue with and not Vista itself.
It runs very quiet, looks nice, has two PCI expansion slots to add whatever (maybe more USB ports) and all the front AV ports I needed for a very low price. It has one extra bay in the front to add a second CD or DVD drive, which I have already done on mine for faster CD and DVD copying. This computer was exactly what I expected.
I think this PC should have a few more USB ports and a DVI output for sure. I am reviewing the m8100n. I am seeing some people posting reviews under the wrong area.
My advice is to think on your own and pick what specs you need first and then read the reviews. Not everyone wants the same thing and many people have unreasonable expectations. If this computer meets your needs as far as specs go, then buy it. You will love it!
- so far so good. i haven't had a chance to use it too much, i have been on vacation for two weeks, but i have had no problems. it works fast and is easy to understand. it really is not that different than my last computer.

5 comments about Apple iMac Desktop with 24" Display (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive).
- and I am so happy I did. I like fine things and things that work. 20 years ago I left Apple because there was more pc software, and pc hardware was less expensive....back then an Apple floppy drive was $300 and a pc floppy drive was $80...remember those floppy drives?
My PC all software was not integrated and I had hardware issues. My son bought an Apple to do his art work, I read all the reviews I could find and bought my imac 4 months ago. I am glad I did. Out of the box, I could run everything. It is so easy making photo books with iphoto. My family loves them. I am working on editing vcr tapes with imovie now.
Everything is backed up with Time Machine. These Apple guys have it all together.
This is a fine piece of equipment and a worthwhile investment. Get the wireless mouse but stay with the wired keyboard. I bought the extended care plan because of my pc experiences, but have not used my Apple extended care plan yest...$129 cost, Consumer Reports said to buy it, do I did.
I write this review because all of the reviews have been helpful to me when considering a purchase, and I think I should give back a little of my time to help perhaps one or two other people out there make a decision.
Buy it and have fun.
- I should preface this by stating that this is my first Mac, and I have been using Windows for what seems like forever. When researching what was available for all-in-ones, clearly the iMac takes the prize. Knowing that I could install Bootcamp, and run Windows natively, I felt this was the best way to go. Overall, the design is incredible. Apple products just ooze quality, and this is no exception. Installation was a snap, and everything works as advertised. My only complaint is that my iMac has a strange buzzing sound from the plastic back panel that appears to be a resonation resulting from the speed of the internal fan. If I touch my hand to the back panel while it is buzzing, the sound goes away. Sometimes I can adjust the angle of the screen to make the sound go away as well, but after a few minutes, the sound comes back. I called Apple, and they advised me to bring the iMac back to an Apple Store. Fair enough, as there is a store right in San Francisco, but the prospect of lugging a 25 Lb box around the Embarcadero with "Apple" emblazoned on the side just did not seem fun. Keep in mind that I purchased this online, so it was delivered to my home. I asked if a technician could visit my home to correct the issue, and I was told that this was possible only if I had purchased the AppleCare extended agreement. My computer is all of 2 days old. While I will likely bring it into the store to have it repaired, I was left wondering how it was that Apple thought it appropriate to ship me a flawed computer, and then put the inconvenience back onto me to have it repaired. A little arrogant if you ask me. So be advised of the reality of not purchasing the extended contract, and hope that everything arrives in working order.
- * Our PC experiences over the past 10 years has inadvertently lead us to comparing the Low-maintenance factor of our older Mac's (G4 PowerBook w/Tiger + a 2000 iMac Graphite SE model w/Panther), versus, the extremely High-maintenance demands, by our XP Window boxes (HP desktop + a Dell Inspirion laptop). Here's our Real World opinions and side-by-side comparisons between our iMac's + G4 PowerBook and Window XP boxes. Microsoft Security + Repair Software - They have to run Daily, and that means they take your System's resources, as well as Affect your PC's Performance (slows down to a crawl, unexpected Crashes, Freezes, etc)
* Regarding Cross-Platform options - The ability of a Mac to run different types of OS (operating systems), like Macintosh Tiger / Leopard + Microsoft XP / Vista Windows + Linux and others, all on one computer is purely Genius in terms of the Evolution in 'Integrating' multi-platform computing. This is where Apple is light-years ahead of the old dinosaurs. You no longer need two (2) separate PC's anymore. We bought the 20 & 24" with the new Glossy scratch-resistant screens.
* Elegantly brought together in fine Form, Function, and Aesthetics, featuring seamless professional grade aluminum, a high-def wide-screen brilliant scratch-resistant glass screen, built-in iSight camera and microphone, an new ultra-thin aluminum Apple Keyboard, and with the compact Integration of Hardware (Hard drive, Chipset, RAM memory modules, USB/FireWire connectors, in a superb AIO (all-in-one) Hardware platform. See Photos!
* Powered by a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor from the newest "Santa Rosa" chips. The 24-inch iMac Extreme features a 500 GB hard drive, 4 GB of RAM; what it means is that I am now running the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard operating system + Windows XP + Linux, ALL on ONE PC and that just simply ROCKS!
* Tech Support Report - Apple gets an Excellent to Superior Rating (4 to 5 Stars), whereas Microsoft gets a Fair Rating (2-Stars) period! You need to try this yourself to get it!
Hello ... Dumb-Bombay?
* Downside for AIO platforms - The only 2 things that can be Upgraded in an iMac from a Consumer standpoint, is the RAM and OS software. Attempting to Upgrade your Chipset, Hard drive, DVD/CD burner may not be possible, where it's much easier with Mini-towers, with a few screws to open the sides for any hardware upgrades, however, they are non-mobile & bulky.
* Another Mac Upside - This is where the iMac's, appear as an elegant compromise between boxes & laptops.
For instance, our new iMac's are totally Wireless, so we can simply just pick them up & move to any new location! Try that with any Desktop tower!
Have you noticed lately how other PC manufacturers are Emulating Macintosh?
Summary - My first Apple was the 1993 PowerBook 180, with OS 7.6.1 and a Motorola 33 MHz CPU, to the present 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (latest Santa Rosa chipset), with a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and a huge 4 MB L2 cache.
You've come a long way Baby!
- After owning a 20" iMac, I thought I knew what it would be like but the larger brighter 24" screen still blows me away! I got the larger 750GB internal drive and the wireless keyboard & mouse so I'm a very happy guy now. The 24" screen allows me to make all the fonts larger and still get multiple "entire" windows open at the same time, which makes for much less eye strain during extended surfing secessions... The black band that surrounds the outside the the LCD is a great idea, as it makes the screen seem even larger! + Don't forget to sit real close the first time you start this baby up, because when the screen first lights up you will be JAZZED...
Plus don't forget to buy the Apple Care warranty which gives you 3 full years of great service and support just in case - After 2 years of perfect service my old iMac 20" started having logic problems and Apple replaced it with this one for free, (they even gave me a prorated rebate off my original Apple Care warranty so I could buy the new one; that is world class service) enough said)!
What would make it even better? Buy your max of 4GB of RAM memory at OWC for less than $100 and get a rebate for your "old" Apple RAM memory, installing it takes only about 4 minutes.
What would I change, I wish Apple would make a slick Aluminum "full" keyboard that is wireless like the small (without the number pad) wireless Aluminum standard keyboard...
- I've had this model iMac for a year. It rivals Mac Pro performance in most tasks and is the finest piece of technology to have graced my desk.
Here is what I like:
*Can drive a second screen-no probs.
*Has FW800 connectivity for external drives. I've 4TB daisy chained and get awesome r/w speeds.
*Big, beautiful screen.
*A real eye catcher, always draws the techies out of the woodwork.
*Blazing friggen fast.
*Has never crashed!
*Never a security problem--ever!
*First-rate build quality.
Downshots:
*Pricey, at first, even though, over the lifespan of the machine, it will work out to be cheaper due to power useage, build quality and up time.
*OSX adores ram. Max it out and lump it.
*Finally, the screen is bright. Too bright. A pain to calibrate, expect to spend half a day on this if you're fussy.
Overall, if you want the best computing experience available to the consumer today, this high-end Mac is very close to fitting the bill. Between the OS, hardware and Apple's support of same, you'll be congratulating yourself everyday you fire this rascal up.

5 comments about HP TouchSmart IQ770 19-inch Desktop PC (AMD Turion 64 X2 Processor TL-52, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, SuperMulti DVD Drive, Vista Premium).
- I have the next version of this, the HP TouchSmart PC IQ775. So there are some differences in hardware between the two but the concept of this computer is right on! Within a few hours, touching the screen (either with the stylus provided or the tip of my finger) was very natural. In fact, when I was helping my son set up his new laptop (which doesn't have the touch capability), I found myself touching his screen, to his dismay, quite often! It is a great interface.
The look of the PC is amazing. The pics amazon shows for this doesn't accurately reflect that the screen is surrounded in shiny black...must be their flash reflecting. Having the Media Center open and being able to quickly check weather, calendar, get contact info, etc., is exactly how a computer should be. Oh, this wakes up from sleep mode incredibly fast.
I have only had this since Christmas and not a lot of time to play on it...but so far have been impressed. You can easily switch being the mouse, the stylus, keyboard shortcuts, and your fingertip.
I think you will really like this computer.
- I bought this computer after it was specifically pointed out to me in a Costco store by my 14 yera old son. I read a few reviews about this unit and it had mixed reviews. I bought it anyway. My son LOVES this thing. The touch screen aspect seems to make him especially happy. It was very easy to set up (one review said they had to hire the Geek Squad to get it going. What an idiot.) and has performed without trouble. My son is on this thing most of his waking hours, so that is saying something.
- I have owned the HP IQ770 for over six months and use it as my main PC. My intial issues were related to using the installed Vista operating system... but for better or worse, Vista is here to stay.
Now back to HP IQ770. It does a fair job, though I feel it is slow for a pc in this price range. The multicard reader failed about two months ago, dead and not servicable or accessable by the user. The DVD/CD burner is unreliable; sometimes not 'seeing' CD's or DVD's I loaded in it. The DVD/CD drive has jammed on occassion and refused to eject my disk. There is no access to this drive, either should it quit. There are no outputs for a second monitor; would be nice in the event of failure of the 'built-in' monitor. No HDMI, DVI, parallel, or serial ports you can NOT expand the stock system. You can not add a PCI card.
The HP IQ770 does have a "WOW" factor due to its unique and very nice appearance... after that you will find it a very mediocre PC.
- I bought my HP last December and fell in love with it until a few days later when the keyboard started to act up. As I was typing it started missing letters or just froze. I put up with it until last month and then called HP and told them I hated the keyboard and mouse because of the intermitent way it was working. They express shipped a new keyboard and mouse to me and this one seems to be working better, although every once in a while when I move the keyboard it goes back to missing letters. The photo printer sits right behind the screen, saving space on my desk. A great looking computer, and I can even comes with a remote to watch TV. Everyone raves about the look and loves it when they come by.
- Are you kidding me? What's not to love? This is a F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S computer. I've probably purchased 10 or more computers in the past 5 years and this is my hands down favorite. Easy set up, incredible screen, doesn't take much desk space and it is LIGHTNING fast. I paid more than double this price for a top of the line Dell CPU only no screen or keyboard. I wish I could trade that for two of these! It's so much faster. It feels and looks so different from a "normal" computer and there is nothing under the desk to bump my knee on. LOVE THAT. I spend 10 hours or more a day on the computer for work so this is just a treat. I'm not one to write reviews but this computer is worth telling people about. I love everything about it and think everyone should own one. Hey HP will ya' send me another one for free if I spread the word?????
I too had some initial problems with downloading new programs and a couple of kinks to work out including losing the sound control on the monitor. It all turned out to be issues with VISTA not the computer and a super friendly tech stayed on the phone with me for two hours to resolve everything with updates and such.
I'm watching the reviews from previous customers and hoping my keyboard doesn't go kaput. I have a newer version that just came out IQ501
The only thing that could make this better is if it had a Keurig coffee maker built in. Now that would be the ultimate machine!
