5 comments about HP Pavilion S3300F Slimline Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core 5000+ Processor, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium).
  1. You will be getting a good amount for the money you spend for this computer. This is what I would call a perfect system for a non-gamer, who is not into upgrading too much, but wants a solid system that can last for many years.

I bought this computer for my daughter who is now attending college, and needs a decent system for her homework research. It is perfect. It does not have the thrills of a quad processor, but speed for Google searching is not required. It does not have the graphics to play Call of Duty 4. You do not need extreme graphics to do research. It does not have a blue ray drive to burn cd's, nor a second hard drive built in to do system back-ups. There are workarounds for those issues too...

My point is, for the amount you are paying, you will receive a decent system, good value, and you will not be disappointed. I would say this could also be a good office system for a small office or home office. Wireless modem is already installed so it is ready to go as a second computer. Vista premium is easy to use, and was an easy transition from XP.

  2. I just purchased this computer,i like how small and how cool it looks, but was very un happy when this unit says it has s video, but the small paper that was in box, said if it does not have a s video and a componet video located right here, and they showed where it was located, then you are unable to use this as a tv monitor, well thanks hp, you could off told me that on your web site.so i sent mine back,im waiting for a refund.the s video that is on there is located where cable wire plugs in,but thats only for a video camera, per instructions in the owners manual.

  3. The computer is okay (u get what you pay for) but I am on my second wireless keyboard. The first did not work right out of the box and after 30 minutes of being hassled by a barely english speaking agent out of india and 7 days later I received the 2nd wireless keyboard. After 5 days of it working, we starting getting a message saying we were holding down the ctrl key. Needless to say, i went out and bought a non HP wired keyboard, and have had no problems.

  4. I BROUGHT THIS SLIMLINE PC WITH KEYBOARD N MOUSE INCLUDED AND IT'S GREAT, FIRST TIME BUYING A REFURBISHED PC IT WORKS LIKE A DREAM AND FAST, I JUST NEED A NEW MONITOR LIKE A 19" THEN I'LL BE HAPPY , I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE, IT'S QUIET SLIM DOESN'T TAKE UP MUCH SPACE AT ALL... GO GET ONE............. JOI-BERMUDA

  5. I bought this computer in hopes that the OS would work better than my 2002 Media. Alas, it did not. The computer itself works OK aside from it getting hot if left on too long. The OS, however, has too many glitches that the cheap price isn't worth the headache. I would not recommend the Vista version.

1 comments about Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5881 15.4-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile RM-70 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 200 Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium) Onyx Blue.
  1. Though I loved my previous laptop and used it with no complaints since November 2003, I feel like I was a caterpillar and now I'm a butterfly, using my new Toshiba L305D-S5581! Well, okay, I did have a complaint about how long it took my old PC to boot up and shut down, and was thrilled with my new Toshiba's faster accomplishments of those routine operations. I had expected slower instead of faster, due to VISTA and the additional programs which would be on the new laptop. I had XP on my old laptop. I like both versions of MS Windows OS, and can see the advantages of each, but VISTA is definitely the butterfly.

Even though many reviews have made what appear to have been valid complaints about products with the specifications this Toshiba (and other brands) has, I have not had any of those difficulties, and indeed have felt like wings have replaced my previously grounded slow motion.

I was foremost looking for a machine with at least 3 GB of SDRAM, and at least 200 GB HD. The choice of 3 GB of RAM was due to helpful reviews I've read on many pages for laptops on Amazon which have complained that Windows VISTA is slow with less RAM. What I have on this machine is absolutely fine for my needs.

Reviews have noted that not quite as much HD space is needed currently, with the market availability of USB drives which extend the PC's hard drive in a variety of ways, with nearly endless storage options... so I felt that 200 GB DH would be adequate, and it is, though I don't need to store lots of game or graphics programs on my PC, mostly just my manuscripts and MS WORD, AOL, and photos.

As to the complaints of current laptops being loaded with what is called crap ware or bloat ware, I have to say I agree somewhat with those complaints. I haven't yet been able to decide what I might need within the bloat ware offerings, and honestly can't decide which of the DVD players, CD writers, Wireless purveyors, etc., would be the ones I would want to use.

But what some reviews have pointed out exposes the trade off in this case, i.e., the reason certain LT's (laptops) can be offered at such good prices is that the companies who provide the plethora of extra programs pay for that advertising, thereby allowing the lower price offered by the company offering the machine. Given that trade off, I'm willing to take time to decide what I want to keep and discard among the huge number of colorful icons grinning at me from my desk top, hoping I'll click on them and purchase from their trial offerings.

Everything I have so far installed and begun using has been easy for me, not a computer wiz, to accomplish, though I'm very thankful for the reviewers who mentioned the Windows VISTA habit of always asking via a dialogue box pop-up if the user or "administrator" (me) initiated the action. Even though this pop up sometimes feels disruptive, I've become more comfortable knowing I will be asked and informed before uploading and installation will occur from the hordes of automatic updates seemingly offered by everyone on every program on my computer.

I was thankful to the reviewers who mentioned that with VISTA drivers are often needed for installations of programs and hardware. I loved the Plug & Play capacity with XP, but can easily see why the incredible increase of hardware and software might have caused the necessity of a specific CD driver to be used for installation, and so far all programs and equipment have come with necessary drivers. The reviews, however, alerted me to this necessity, so I wasn't surprised by this seeming backward change from XP to VISTA, which to me, now, is clearly a forward motion taking into account the current and growing progress in the computer industry, and the plethora of variety available.

I was able to easily install the driver of the HP All in One (with FAX) I purchased, along with the wireless mouse and USB hub. I hope to have time to review some of those, too, because I'm butterfly thrilled with each of them!

I want to conclude by thanking the huge number of reviewers on Amazon, who commented on various brands of notebook PC's. Each of those reviewers was directly and practically helpful to me in one way or another. Personally, I would rather read Amazon customer reviews on computer hardware, before reading PC magazines or other more complex sources of information. For me, reviews from everyday people, purchasers/users of specific pieces of equipment, say just what I need to know, in an easily comprehensible language. I do a lot of research on Amazon's buying pages, under customer reviews.

Flying off to ready more of my novels for publication on KINDLE, I remain a wing-ed author at your reading service!

5 comments about Compaq Presario CQ50-110US 15-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz AMD Turion X2 RM-70 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium).
  1. I spent a lot of time researching laptops in my price range and finally went with this one. The 3 GB of ram is fantastic and the video card, while not top of the line, is a class 3 card. The other one I was looking at, also made by HP, had a class 1 video card (the lowest rating) and cost $100 more. I am running games that are not super new, but still require a decent video card and there is no problem with them. Some of the settings are turned off or down, but the game still looks great. This one also had more hard drive space as well. There are a couple of things that I do want to mention, but they are not enough to not give it a score of 5.

The DVD drive door clicks loudly as it pops out and when you push it back in. I am used to it now, but it freaked me out a bit the first few times. And if you run it on high performance (I do since almost always plugged in) it can get very hot. Since I use a lap desk again not too bad of an issue, but just wanted to let people know.

I also installed a wireless router in my place and the laptop saw it right away and connected to it with no problems. I have had no problems with Vista except one game that is 3 years old is said to have issues, but the game runs fine as far as I can tell.

I also have a laptop that is owned by work. I can carry both in my shoulder bag no problem. I wouldn't want to do lots of walking with both of them, but for a short distances it is fine.

A great little laptop with some nice features.

(I didn't even really look at the pictures so I hadn't noticed that one had a webcam. I read all the specs to see what it was coming with.)

  2. This is not a review of this specific model but of Compaq service. I purchased a Presario F762NR four months ago. The screen has now failed. I returned it to Compaq for repair and they refuse to honor the warranty unless I buy an additional warranty. The cost to replace the screen is $2 less than what I paid for the laptop. I have owned many Compaq products in the past and currently have 4 in the house. Compaq service used to be excellent; things have changed. I will no longer purchase any Compaq product and recommend that you consider the risks involved.

  3. It's got an Athlon dual core 2gHz processor, 3gB of RAM, a 200 gig hard drive, Vista Premium with Windows video editing program, and Windows DVD mastering program, a DVD burner, with lite-scribe...does the printing right on the disc itself. Wow!

This should be so beautiful! I have so much video that needs to be edited, and people around the world that would LOVE to see what I have on that shelf of tapes. While it's still no professional unit, this thing, with all its features and specs should be able to do a decent job at home video production, right?

But for one thing. No Firewire port. No place to plug a Firewire port card into. Oh, there's three USB ports, and one memory card port, but no possible way to load DV into this thing.

    Then, what's the point!? (sigh)

  4. This laptop was a replace for my 5 years old laptop, the laptop is fast and 3GB make it awesome. The screen is very glossy and the colors are sharp. No web cam, i don't care because my x-laptop does not have one, no firewire, my x-laptop had one but I never use it. I still need to test the battery life. The DVD clicks when you close it, but I get used on it. The laptop is not heavy nor light. It was a great deal with these specs. The only thing that I miss is my Windows XP

  5. All in all I am happy with my purchase of the Compaq Presario CQ50. It provides the capacity I need for my small business. I would warn the buyer that the installed Mircosoft Office and Norton Anti-virus are trial versions and only good for 2 months, therefore you should expect to spend several hundreds dollars more for the software. This makes the purchase price not such a bargin at the end of the day.

5 comments about Compaq Presario SR5110NX Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+, 512 MB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, Vista Basic).
  1. I purchased this product for my father who does not play computer games. This computer with the addition of 2x1 GB DDR 2 GB of Ram provides a robust platform to run the state of the art windows applications including Vista and Office 2007 without any problems. With rebates this product comes in at around 300 dollars including everything one would need except a monitor and printer. Cost/ Performance I give this product 5 stars; however, I give the product 3 stars for Graphics Performance; yielding an overall score of 4 stars. 2 GB of additional ram will cost about 150 dollars.

  2. frequent troubles after anti-virus software download (trend Micro).removed
norten before downlad. I bought sr5010nx 2 months ago (amazon) it works
good. At that time also,, I have troubles to remove the norten. It has taken many hours. I will never purchase compaq presario in future and not recommend it. I will try with norten anti-virus protection, but result is open.Troubles in details:Error message:A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer etc.----
PS:I have contacted many factory-technicians, but troubleshooting different and in vain until now. Please, take my concern into consideration and replace it, if possble.
because amazon has a reputation? Name. customer NC.

  3. Notice in that at the top of the page the CPU is listed as an "AMD 64 4000" and below in the CPU description it says it is a dual core and out performs the AMD 64 4000. Dual core CPU's perform better and cost more. Almost all new computers are being produced with dual core CPU's. You don't have to be a gamer to feel the improved performance. The AMD dual core CPU's have "AMD 64 X2" in the name and the single cores have "AMD 64" in the name. They are both 64 bit & 32 bit capable, although most consumers will buy the 32-bit version of Vista. The AMD 64 4000 is still a great CPU. Amazon needs to fix their product description so that the CPU described in the title matches what is described in the details section or some consumer is going to be disappointed.

I bought a Compaq Black Friday special for my wife from Fry's that has the AMD 64 4000 CPU, 160 GB SATA drive, 1 GB RAM, LightScribe DVD recorder, Vista Premium, with a 20" LCD (Everex) and Printer (Epson R60) for $297 (after rebates). But you had to be up at 4:00 AM. And Compaq creates unique part numbers per reseller so you have no easy way to compare prices. You have to look at what is inside to compare. Getting a clear idea of what is inside, especially the main ingredient in any computer, the CPU, is critical to make an informed decision. I'd say Amazon needs to clarify whether you are getting a single or dual core CPU as they are contradicting themselves here. They need to fix it and print an editor's note below my review saying it has been fixed.

  4. The hard drive went bad on this beast. I called their customer service to get some action taken to repair, tons of run-around, no solutions. HP/Compaq refuses to fix the problems. We've got family photos and movies trapped on the drive. Word of caution to always remember to back up files to a secondary drive or dvd's. Especially if you buy this computer!!

  5. The item came in time. It seems that it is OK. This was a gift for a relative and she thinks that it is doing good for her. I have no problems buying stuff from Amazon.com so far.

  1. My PC is still working, so this cpu fan works, but what I like is the LED's and the uv rings it came with it. Looks great in the case, and comes with optional speed control. Buyers beware this is a bulky fan, make sure you have room to fit before buying.
