5 comments about 1941: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
  1. They recently brought 1941 on television. I just turned on when there were three women singing in the tradition of the Andrews Sisters. Even though the action of the movie did not grab me it was the music that kept me watching. The singing and the orchestral music they played in the ballroom of the U.S.O. was so great I wanted it in CD quality. After buying this CD I was very disappointed to find that all of the songs by the singing women, especially "Down by the Ohio", were missing.

With only 38 minutes of music on the CD only half of the capacity is used. Absolutely not understandable they omitted the best tracks! This disc might be all right for the person looking for John Williams instrumental music only. For somebody who wants a CD worthy being called "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" it is not complete and cannot be recommended.

  2. The march from "1941" is propulsive and exciting, and shows us that we are listening to the music for a comedy. John Williams goes beyond this movie, presenting us with wild tunes that keeps us marvelled and entertained. The CD presents us with incredible marches that only Williams knows how to write. And let's not forget 'Swing, Swing, Swing', a track that definetely presents us with a great dancing rhythm entangled with comedy. This is a great CD, in spite of its thirty eight minutes.

  3. Truly the track title rulez here!

TO HOLLYWOOD AND GLORY! John Williams understand here probably better than on any other score to use his full-blown orchestra
in a patriotic and bombastic way - yet never too much of it!

What sounds strange at first comes to it's first reality in the funny, sarcastic *and* bombastic MAIN TITLE, a march of course.

Boy, did I love this movie and score at "first sight" and was after this score in 1984 when the LP was very rarely seen. This one score became one of my close all-time-favs and the many outstanding tracks, namely THE INVASION, TO HOLLYWOOD AND GLORY and THE BATTLE OF HOLLYWOOD play in my mind even in rememberance.

Williams even made fun out of the classic SING-SING-SING, this time as SWING-SWING-SWING.

A riot of a score! Rousing trombones, powerful horns...
You gotta love this score! Buy it, when you see it!

  4. There is needless to say much about John Williams. He is simply brilliant. The greatest composer of our time wrote a heroic, fast and excellent score for Steven Spielbergs highly underrated action-adventure comedy-spectacle. Each track of Williams is special, and the main title march is a real classic. Anyone, anyone, who loves film music at its best, must own this cd.It is a true masterpiece, a music, which can be enjoyed without the film too.

  5. ...but the movie was a bomb.

The real shame of "1941" was how badly it wasted the music, the actors and the production values. One year after the smash success of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE, this couldn't-miss monstrosity lurched into theatres for Christmas of 1979 and laid a massive holiday egg. I was in high school and nobody looked more forward to this movie than I did.

The script was all over the place and nothing seemed to come together. The laughs were few and far between. The direction was...wasn't...there. Nobody could figure out how Steven Spielberg could make instant classics like JAWS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and then turn this out. (He definitely redeemed himself with his next film: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK). Watching "1941", I kept wondering, "Where was John Landis?" Get him and his KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE team in there.

But John Williams provided a great soundtrack to a lame comedy. It invoked the spirit of the World War II Hollywood movie marches and would've been the perfect music accent or undercut the comic mayhem...if there had been any.

  1. Just like watching the movie again. Love it! Great movie, Great soundtrack!

  2. If your are wondering about the great music from the Club scene with Anna Paquin dancing in the hallway to "Bra," and the DJ spinning the track "the message."

And the track "Dove," playing in the background while Ed Norton visits with the Ukranian mobsters in the basement of the club.
Well, All these tracks are by Cymande (pronounced sah-mahn-day)

This music has been remastered and just recently released on an album called - Renegades of Funk. This album is completely remastered and has some unreleased bonus tracks. Finally an album is available that does this great band justice. It also has some great photos of the fusion funk, jazz, soul and reggae breakbeat band from the early seventies. Enjoy.

  3. Someone stated in an earlier review that the Cymande 'Bra' version (mix) for the bathroom scene was is on a DJ mix CD called "Danny Krivit - Edits by Mr. K, The Original Rare Disco Mixes." DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY LIKE I DID. THAT IS NOT THE CORRECT ONE. I will now go and see if the grand master flash version is correct.

  4. Soundtrack, colours, cast... everything arrives right to the heart, and goes through, makes you try to live every day your 25th hour. Thanks Spike.

  5. One star cause it doesn't have the songs I'm looking for, great movie though. thanks to those you posted where the club scene songs can be found, but where can we get the actual mix that was played while Naturelle and Marie were dancing? That is not on the CDs mentioned below....

3 comments about Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.
  1. Unlike the Civil War Soundtrack, there are new compositions here, in addition to traditionals recorded and arranged just for "Lewis & Clark". Also unlike the Civil War soundtrack, the songs here are mostly folk, some of which have a distinct Irish or Scottish flavor to them. Artists collaborating on this album include Silly Wizard, Bobby Horton, Jay Ungar, Skip Gorman, and a host of other well known and not so well known (but equally talented) people, so you know the music will be good. Phil Cunningham's "When Summer Ends" easily stands alongside "Ashokan Farewell" as a standout piece of music associated with a Ken Burns series, and you will find yourself humming (or whistling) it to yourself well after you've listened to this album (Phil is one of the members of Silly Wizard). The traditional "Beech Spring" is another standout piece of music. While the songs are well matched to the events they're associated with in the film, the album easily stands on its own without benefit of words or pictures. Unlike many soundtracks, this is a collection you can listen to at work, in your car, or anywhere.

I recommend it for any fans of folk music, the artists listed, the Cape Breton sound, and fiddle or other traditonal instruments. Fans of New Age artists such as George Winston would also like some of this album.

  2. This CD is SWEET! Sweet sweet sweet.
I saw the documentary on PBS and found the theme selection, "Beech Spring," playing over and over in my head. Very cool arrangement of a traditional melody.

(I know this is a rather large review, but keep reading....it gets better.)

    My other favorites:
Heart of the Heartland (Lewis' theme) - For those of you not familiar with his story, Meriwether Lewis led a noble yet tragic life. A great heart, an incredible leader, yet often self-critical and depressed. His theme starts out with a mandolin solo and guitar accompaniment, later joined by a beautiful cello counterpart. I was playing it on the piano one day when my mom walked in and said simply, "That music sounds sad." I just stopped and went "Whoa - whoever wrote this really said what he meant to say: it's played major key, yet deeply expressive of a melancholy longing." (Gotta admit - I even tear up sometimes when I listen to it, heh heh.)
Shenandoah - (Jefferson's theme) An American classic; I assume one of Ken Burn's favorite folk songs, cuz he has it played a thousand different ways on almost all of his documentaries. This particular arrangement is AWESOME - I could never get tired of it. It's played with a light bluegrass feel, very fresh and happy. But it's simple, too - just a fiddle and guitar, not doin' anything too fancy. I think there's a penny-whistle interspersed as well. When this track comes on, I turn up the bass and set the track on 'repeat.' ;>)

OK, well, I think this review is long enough already. I could go on and on about this CD, but for your sake, I won't. If you're still reading, let me just say this: I leave it to you to get out there, buy it for yourself, and treat your ears to the best feeling they've had in a long time.
    Have fun!

  3. I love this CD! Not only is the music lovely, but there are a few spoken excerpts from the film that are beautiful as well. It carries you along on the journey -- wonderful!

5 comments about Toy Story: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack.
  1. Randy Newman, in addition to being an excellent singer and songwriter, delivers a great orchestral score for Toy Story. "You've Got a Friend in Me" is a great song, along with "Strange Things" and "I Will Go Sailing No More." The instrumental tracks contain a lot of variations on themes from these 3 songs played, in addition to a lot of other themes and ideas. The average person might think that scoring for an animated film would mean that the music would have to fit the scene exactly on every single move, otherwise known as mickey-mousing, done in the old Warner Bros. cartoons. However, Newman scores it as if it were a drama and just listening to the music would tell you that. There are some comedic and fun parts in the music, which hint that it is an animated film, but not like the cartoons of old. The score is overall enjoyable, light-hearted, and fun. Other parts of the score contain jazz related ideas and there is action music present in several of the cues, which Newman does an excellent job writing. A great soundtrack to own and listen to for people of all ages.

  2. I'm not a huge soundtrack fan but this is a good soundtrack. It has all of the vocal songs from the movie along with most of the instrumental stuff. If you liked the music in the mvie this would be a good buy.

  3. TOY STORY was the first feature-length motion picture that Pixar released in theatres. The movie was literally ground-breaking in what it did for animation and also included one of the best movie plots to be seen on screen that whole year (1995). In addition, there was the music. Randy Newman has been plugging out show tunes for years on end. However, with the release of the TOY STORY, Newman entered a new era. Some will disagree and others will say that TOY STORY is when Newman sold out, but with the TOY STORY soundtrack, Randy Newman's music went mainstream in a major way and became popular with a whole new audience (largely composed of children and young adults).

TOY STORY is a buddy flick and the songs and music on the album reflect that. From the wonderful "You've Got a Friend in Me" to the charming instrumental "Woody and Buzz", the music and songs of TOY STORY reflect an awareness and mentality that is often missing in movie music.

I enjoy listening to the instrumental pieces on the album, but am especially fond of the regular songs. Those songs are:

"You've Got a Friend in Me"--the song that captures the whole
buddy-theme of the movie. As a sidenote, this was one of the
most requested songs on the children's radio show I used to
    produce.

"Strange Things"--a song about one's self-awakening and the
frustration felt in the goings on.

"I Will Go Sailing No More"--one of the saddest and most
haunting songs I have ever heard sung in a movie, the song is
all about the loss of a dream.

The TOY STORY album isn't for everyone. However, fans of the film and Randy Newman fans will probably enjoy it, not to mention Disney maniacs.

  4. i like this is the best piece of crud on the face of the world

  5. In November of 1995 audiences were treated to the first computer animated motion picture event: Toy Story. Many were to soon pick up a Copy of the Soundtrack to own that following Christmas. When I first heard the Score for the film 'Toy Story' it stuck with me for a bunch of years. Now I am finally able to write a review for the Score. Here is my Track-by-Track Review: (I will be only reviewing the Instrumental Pieces!)
    04. Andy's Birthday: (3/5): As the opening to the Score of the Film I don't think I really expected much. For the opening it certainly doesn't start with much of a bang! Though I must say, it does get right to the idea of this piece. It's Andy's Birthday and Woody and rest of the toys are dreadfully worried!
    05. Soldiers Mission: (3/5): Okay's heres the whole idea, Woody has sent the little green army men to go and see what presents Andy is getting for his birthday. This Instrumental doesn't say very much in terms of storyline presentation, but it definaly picks the Score up a little more. It is more high noted and more exciting then the previous Instrumental!
    06. Presents: (5/5): WOAH! Now this one is what makes the score pick itself up. I'm not too sure on the name of the track being 'Presents' but I know that it totally captures that strong sense of panic when Woody and the rest of the Toys descover Andy is coming upstairs!
    07. Buzz: (4/5): Well, the name says it all! Andy and his friends have just left and Woody has just got a new look at Andy's new toy! Buzz Lightyear! This Instrumental carries the story quite nicely. The second part of the Instrumental, the music from the 'Flying' Scene, reminds me of a Roller Coaster. By the end of this part in the Film Woody is Jealous of the new toy!
    08. Sid: (5/5): Finally! We get introduced to the Villian of the film in this Instrumental Piece. Woody is busy mocking Buzz when they hear the laugh of Sid Phillips. A boy who apparently tortures toys! The Music for this scene fits quite well as an introduction to Sids character. Cruel, Rude and Punk!
    09. Woody and Buzz: (4/5): The title for this Instrumental Piece fits quite well considering the Scene's it surrounds. First Woody accidently knocks Buzz out the window, next he is threatened by the toys, then meets up with Buzz at the Gas Station on the way to Pizza Planet. There is a certain tenseness concerning the bit of the Instrumental in which the toys attack Woody! Not much else to say about this Piece.
    10. Mutants: (5/5): WOAH! I don't know why on earth this track is titled Mutants. The Mutant Toys dont make their Music cue until almost the end of the Piece! Anyway, Woody and Buzz are in a Claw game where you use a claw to get a prize. And guess who turns up...Sid! Sid 'Wins' them then takes them home. Soon after Woody and Buzz have a frightening confrontation with 'The Mutant Toys'! The object of Sids playtime. The Music for this whole track is pretty nice. It works well and gives off a definate wacko/horror sense, which makes scense considering the idea of the scenes.
    11. Woody's Gone:(4/5): This Music Piece is calmer then the previous 'Sid's House' centred Pieces entitled 'Mutants'. Even do why this piece is entitled 'Woody's Gone' is beyond me. The music for this track begins after the Sequences at Andy's house. Whatever. Anyway, Woody and Buzz have survived one night, now they are victim to Sids cruelty. Thankfully they almost escape. But then the 'Mutants' arrive but Woody fails to be truly terrified again, and flees the room but discovers Sids Dog: Scud. Under the Circumstances this music is a preety fair accompnient to the introduction of Sid's Dog. The music is tense but not high noting tense. Besides, things are about to get worse.
    12. The Big One: (5/5): Poor Woody and Buzz. Buzz has a broken arm and is trying to explain that to Andy's Toys, then Sid comes along and desides to blow Buzz up with a new rocket! Though the circumstances arn't ALL bad. Woody discovers the Mutants are not Cannibals like supposed back in Instrumental 10 'Mutants'. They fix Buzz. As an instrumental, its another panic piece. Though this time there is more at stake. Buzz's Life! Besides the music for this track is exciting and tense at the same time.
    13. Home Together: ( 5/5): Well, I dont know why this track is titled 'Home Together'. Shouldn't it be 'Hang Together'. Who Knows?
This track is much like the previous one. At least the panic part is. But it has more of a marching tune to accompany the Mutants. Anyway, to get the lowdown, Woody and Buzz talk to each other, then Sid wakes up and takes Buzz to blow him up. Woody panics then enlists the help of the Mutant Toys, realising now they are not Cold hearted! The Mutants make their way outside without being noticed. Then they get ready for their showdown with Sid!
    14. On the Move: (4/5): Not really one of my favorites. It is mostly a transitional track. In other words it wraps up the whole 'Sid' plot then goes right into the Climax. It works though! Anyway, Woody and the Mutants put their plan into action and terrify Sid. After a little celebration Woody and Buzz run to catch up with the moving Truck! THIS is the most dramatic scene! Will Woody and Buzz make it?
    15. Infinity and Beyond: (4/5): Well this track concludes the Score for 'Toy Story'! Woody and Buzz use the rocked Sid strabbed to Buzz to catch up with the Van and land in the box beside Andy! A Happy Ending, as usual. As an insrumental piece it is very UPLIFTING and soars high with its high notes which, unlike the ones occuring during the 'SID' sequences (10-14) are not ones of horror. Otherwise a good piece.
As a complete Score Randy Newman does an excellent job of leaping from Joy to fear to bittersweet tears. This is by far my favorite score for a Disney/Pixar film. I highly reccomend it!

  1. i cried my eyes out during this movie! it is so moving and it touches you heart in a special way. my favorite song on the soundtrack is shine your light because the lyrics are so poetic and fit so well with the movie. if you haven't already seen this movie then you must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH
if you like this movie then you wil live " The Notebook"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bring the tissues cause you might bawl your eyes out during both movies(just like I did)
it's movies like this which keep the movie industry open!

  2. This soundtrack is wonderful. It contains a wide variety of music, yet they all fit together. The main song by Robbie Robertson is amazing.
See this movie, and then buy the soundtrack. You won't regret it.

  3. I watched Laddar 49 and I have friends who were involved in 9/11 who were firefighters and watching the movie "Laddar 49" was like being with real firefighters..These guys aren't paid enough for what they do..Stop paying these prima-dona baseball,. basketball and the rest millions of dollars a season..Pay these firemen what they're worth and more!

  4. I bawled my eyes out when I watched the movie "Ladder 49". Then when I listened to the soundtrack, my eyes watered with the memory of the movie.

This is a great soundtrack. The theme song, "Shine Your Light" is such a moving song. It's one of those songs you can't get tired of. It's uplifting, as well as providing a rememberance for the simple things in life. Life itself.

  5. I just received my copy of the Ladder 49 soundtrack, and I couldn't be happier. What beautiful music! Every song that I loved from the movie is on the CD. Robbie Robertson's "Shine Your Light" gives me goosebumps. It's such an inspirational song. How can you not love "Fire" from The Ohio Players. "As I'm Leaving" and "You and Me" are great. I was also suprised to see "A Call to Courage" on there. It plays at the beginning of the movie, and it's very powerful. If you enjoyed the movie, you should get the soundtrack. You won't be disapointed.

  1. Completely devoid of melody and intricacy, the Lost In Translation soundtrack sounds like someone allowed their inebriated 93-year-old uncle to wander unsupervised into an electric organ store, where he slowly falls asleep face down on a keyboard, drooling pea soup into the circuitry. This is glorified New Age music for underpowered karaoke machines, and it would put even Yanni to sleep.

  2. "Lost in Translation" is one of my personal favorite soundtracks from the past five years. The soundtrack consists of an array of modern electronica artists from Air to Squarepusher, with a smidgeon of indie rock by Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine fame) and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The moodiness of songs like Sebastien Tellier's "Fantino" and Air's "Lost in Kyoto" provides the lush, atmospheric soundtrack to the scenes involving Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen. Some people might find this soundtrack bloody boring but I loved it because the music actually made the film what it was. I only wish that Sophia included the song by Peaches from the stripclub scene on the soundtrack but overall the soundtrack is a classic to me. I don't think the film would have been as good with any other music.

  3. For some reason, I bought this soundtrack thinking that it contained Bill Murray's singing from the karaoke bar scene. I actually like his version better than original singers'. Lack of paying attention on my part. I thought one soundtrack kinds melt into the next....meaning, they all sounded the same after a while. But still decent to listen to if you want to relax and mellow out.

  4. This CD, when listened to, will make you question your existence on this planet. It will unsettle your soul. It will make you realise that there's a lot of Bill Murray's character in us. The problem is that we're poor, we're working for the man, the woman (or man) has you in a headlock, the kids are cutting you a new bunghole, and that youre never gonna be a famous actor doing a commercial in an exotic coutry or a filmmaker or anything remotely similar. If someone with huge amounts of money and fame and those who travel weekly saw this film and listened to this soundtrack, they wouldnt have a clue. It's the feelings evoked within the souls of the poor schmoes like you and me that makes this soundtrack and movie something special. It makes us long for a time that's unattainable and that is the magic that you feel within you when you listen to this... Lost in Translation -- lost forever, lost indeed........

  5. I got this CD because I have the DVD and wanted some of the atmospheric music from the soundtrack. Some good stuff here but I was puzzled to find out the last track "Just Like Honey/More Than This" is 12:37 in duration. That's 3 minutes of "Just Like Honey" followed by 8 minutes of silence, then about 1:37 Of Bill Murray (as introduced by Scarlett Johannsen) singing "More Than This" karaoke style. I used Nero software to convert the track to a WAV file, then split it up to create two tracks, 3:00 and 1:37 long, respectively.

I don't know why the producers of the CD would create a 12+ minute track for less than 5 minutes of music. We are not amused.

Standout tracks are "Girls", "Tommib", "Sometimes" and the aforementioned "Just Like Honey".

  1. This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

  2. THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

  3. This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

  4. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

  5. The first three discs were only OK. I had forgotten how much better the later Broadway musical recordings were. The last two discs were very good, maybe because I could relate better to the shows or perhaps the productions were better.

5 comments about The Pirates of Penzance.
  1. I love listening to these CD's. (There are 2 of them.) This recording of The Pirates of Penzance is great fun and quite entertaining. The lyrics are enclosed so I can check to see what is being sung if I'm not sure. The melodies are enchanting. The wonderful humor of Gilbert and Sullivan is intact. The silliness and musical talent remind me of the Marx Brothers, especially something like A Night at the Opera.

Linda Ronstadt is amazing! Kevin Kline can do anything! George Rose IS the modern Major General! And Rex Smith ("how rare his beauty") is perfect!

  2. My favourite performance of this classic Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta. Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstat, and the whole cast are perfect.

  3. The entire "Pirates" score plus much of the dialogue is found in this recording. The voices are extremely appropriate to each of the characters, and the comedy of the score is apparent. The energy is extremely high, which, in turn, excites the listener. I never tire of listening to it.

  4. You have to be a muscial fan to love this. This play is very fun and funny. This soundtrack has the songs from this wonderful play that you will want to hear over and over again.

  5. Fantastic CDS based on the stageplay and video. I missed Angela Lansbury as Ruth but it is a fanatastic recording and interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta.

  4. I love the movie Animal House. I was looking for the soundtrack for a long time, and I was ecstatic when I found it on Amazon.com. I love listening to this soundtrack on my commute to and from school (NIU). It reminds me of humorous moments in the movie.

  5. I love the Movie and soundtrack. However, I wish for this version had the dialogue as separate tracks instead of part of the song.
