  1. Being used to all the political correctness that has run amok since the 80's, it would probably be shocking for folks in their teens and even early-20's to digest Sam Kinison's comedy: With every performance, he strove to break barriers, cross lines, and just did not care who he offended in the process.

Barriers and lines didn't exist in Kinison's world and his comedy reflects that. He was refreshing for his time and much of what he said then still rings true today.

I loved his take on religion and his constantly pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of tele-evangelists (oh, how he would have a field day in 2005!), even though he was a former Pentecostal preacher.

Sam was in a class all by himself. Many people like to group Andrew Dice Clay in with him but Kinison once said to Howard Stern that the Diceman was basically working his older material. I agree with that assessment. Clay was more into beyond raunchy humor (focusing on sex, sex, and more sex). Even though Kinison did his fair share of raunchiness, he also joked about many other topics as well.

I was only 16 when Sam died but I really miss that scream and his no holds barred attitude. I do get sad whenever I hear Anthrax's "I'm the Man" and hear that scream at the beginning and end of the song but Sam lives on through his comedy and his fans' love and appreciation of him.

  2. This was Sam Kinison when he hit is peak. Robin Williams called him the "Chuck Yeager of comedy" and how right he was. Sam Kinison would push the envelope and then explode over it. With his take on failed relationships, Kinison would say out loud what we all want to say in those situations. He could also anticipate the shock of the audience. He knew that what he would say next would offend them but he also knew that they would laugh out loud despite the shock value.

Be warned though. His material on such issues as women, sex, drugs, homosexuality, AIDS, religion, Christianity and drunk driving will not go over well with everyone. (Having lost a cousin to AIDS and considering that I knew an entire family that was killed by a drunk driver, I certainly do not find myself laughing at those jokes.) Despite all of that, "Have You Seen Me Lately" shows Sam Kinison at his brilliant best. He was certainly offensive but few can deny his that he was a comic genius in his own right.

  3. I just got this CD a couple of day's ago, and since I am young (I am 21), there are some things that are VERY OFFENSIVE, but since I love this stuff, I love IT! Though this CD is old (it came out in 1986 during the AIDS crisis which I remember very well), Sam talks about marriage (There were times where I wanted to get out of the car and run: I HATE YOU, I JUST WANT TO LIVE) , his take on religion (Jesus was never married, a woman does not let you take off for three days and you come back and say "Oh I was dead" yeah if you have ever been married, that always work's, if Jesus was married, his cross would be in the yard and he would tell his disciples 'Look guys you better stay here' he goes in there and his wife is like: "Where you BEEN? Where are those 12 F**KING LOSER'S WHO WON'T GET A JOB?), his take on women (I'm going to use women like Shake n' Bake bags), drugs, drinking and driving are VERY CONTROVERSAL, but this CD does have his controversal AIDS material but if you are easily offensive, this is NOT THE CD FOR YOU, religious? Not for you. Sam was a God in comedy and he will be missed a lot...

  4. Sam Kinison was one of a kind. A very funny comedian, good mimic with a unique style of his own. I find much of his stuff very amusing. He is good at pointing out hypocracy in our society and also sharing his pain about his life's dissapointments.

However, the material is not PC at all. There are jokes about aids, drunk driving etc... One has to not mind that kind of thing or over look it to appreciate the good stuff.

  5. I had the cassette tape of this "album" when it first came out. Wore the thing out playing it all through college. I still haven't taken the CD out of my car since I bought it...

Sam's views are definitely not PC, but there's too much of that nowadays. Sometimes less PC is good...

This could be considered a time capsule of the late '80s early '90s with what Sam is going off on in his act. There's even some "audience participation" recorded on this set. The song at the end isn't bad, but not the greatest either.

  1. I love this album. I'm glad they reissued it though I haven't gotten the reissue yet. I agree with one of the previous posters that it is a real pain to FF through the CD to try to find a bit you want to hear without listening to the whole album. This is Sam trying to get a little more topical with his take on the Gulf War and the homeless and less about sex and his ex-wives. He's not on top of his game like he is on Louder Than Hell, he kind of meanders at points, drifting from one topic to another without any real linear connection. Sometimes he'll kind of mumble and not complete a sentence. All in all though this is must for any Kinson/comedy fan. It is also cool to hear him in an intimate setting again at a small comedy club in Houston. "Have You Seen Me Lately" was obviously recorded in a big venue and though Sam did these as good if not the best of any stand up, I like the small personal setting of a small club. I would rate this as my #2 Kinison album under "Louder Than Hell". Close call with "Have You Seen Me Lately" though. "Leader of the Banned" I think everyone would agree is by far at the bottom. The second half being Sam singing hard rock songs, come on. And the first half of comedy isn't his best either.

  2. ...because I split my sides laughing so hard. Sam Kinison is the funniest S.O.B. to grace God's green earth. compare him to other comedians. Jeff Foxworthy: that redneck crap is getting long in the tooth. he's too clean. Larry The Cable Guy: Get-R-Done and get off the stage. he's too clean. I can listen to this Kinison CD over and over again and still bust my guts laughing. it is so funny when he shouts when he's doing his bit in a skit called "Pee Trough" and he starts talking about Jeffery Dahmer and he says "WILL SOMEONE CALL 9-1-1? WILL SOMEONE CALL 9-1-1? JESUS GOD! HE'S LOOKING AT MY A** AS IF IT'S A SPARE RIB. HE'S ABOUT TO TURN MY A** INTO A BUTT STEAK. WILL SOMEONE CALL 911?" I can't help but laugh. I wish he was still alive.

  3. Sam Kinison, this is FUNNY AS HELL! Live From Hell is funny, I remember watching Sam on his HBO comedy specials a long time ago, and when I FINALLY got this album, I laughed my ass off! Sam touches on everything on this album; Arnold sucking d*ck, the homeless "Execute the homeless! SHOOT THEM!" the Kurd's "Hey I know, why don't we cross the hill and cross the bridge where there is no food and no place to take care of our kids. Ahaahah. I love that commercial 'Why don't you help the Kurd's?' yeah why don't you b**w me?" from Rap "I brought one rap tape, just to be fair, I brought 2 Live Crew's Nasty As We Wanna Be. There was one song on there called 'Suck my D**k' another one was called 'Get The f*ck Out Of My House'" Also he talks about the Joan River's show, he talks about BJ (guys, you know what I am talking about) and also the 100 hour war...so I'll give you some advice, GET THIS ALBUM!!!

  4. You think he really wanted to be Captain Kangaroo? You think he wanted to be Captain f***in Kangaroo for fifty years? FIFTY F'in YEARS.He was always so deppressed "Hi kids, we got a good show for you today." Remember that haircut? Those F****IN MUTTON CHOPS!? You know when he got home every night his wife would have something to say. "YOU'RE NOT A REAL ACTOR, YOU LOOOOSER!!! LOOK AT YOU, YOU'RE A LOOOOOOOSER!!!!"

Oh man, I'm making an ass of myself at work because all of the reveiws for this CD have lines from the stand up, and they are all making me lose control, I'm cracking up here. The one about Jeffrey Dalmer, the one about the Turks. The one about building a McDonalds in Russia. I gotta stop reading this. I won't reveal the bits in my review, I wouldn't want YOU to make such an ass of yourself, if you are sitting at a desk, with all those lame-o's looking at you. HAVEN'T THEY EVER HEARD OF SAM KINISON?!! I'M IN HELL!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!
Get this. All of his CDs are friggin' awesome
I've laughed a million times over to this one, its the BEST!

  1. There's no sinner like a deformed saint...

Find this and copy it- give it to your friends. Then get his others ('Have You seen me lately' is better than 'Live from hell'- both are miles better than 'leader of the banned,' which kinda, well- doesn't suck but barely) This is comedy GOLD. I've got it on vinyl and cassette. I first heard this around 1989 at a friend's house- I couldn't believe that someone could think up such things. And I couldn't believe that anyone would have the balls to say them out loud. I was shocked. I wanted to be that man (in some ways so did the late great Bill Hicks- who was mightily influenced by Kinison, it shows on his more misanthropic material).

Kinison wasn't content with base satire and comedy- the man spit pure venom, with potence, force and accuracy that have yet to be equalled. Outside of watching someone disembowel themselves onstage and toss their guts at you (and that wouldn't be funny, original, but not funny)- you won't find ferocity like this elsewhere.... Put it this way- if you think The Daily's Show's Lewis Black is a daring or edgy comic- give ole Sam a spin. The 'Jesus on the cross' bit will leave you a newer, better person.

Most comedians are simpering fools with 'isn't it odd...' mundanities and "d'ya ever notice how..." Comdey by numbers. connect the dot jokes... Ugh. Kinison stands over all of them- he comes in glory to judge all comics- the living and the dead.

  2. Though having listen to Have You Seen Me Lately (which I found it funnier) and Louder Than Hell...Louder Than Hell is PURE COMEDY GOLD! Sam compared marriage to terrorism (I'm not afraid of terrorism, I WAS MARRIED FOR TWO F**KING YEARS, what are they trying to do scare me? OH-OHHHH), he view on Jesus (Jesus; Sure I'm coming back, just as soon as I can play the PIANO AGAIN, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!), his view on Reagen after he bombed Libya (PUT THAT DRESS ON YOU F**KING B**CH AND DANCE FOR ME!). This is a VERY FUNNY ALBUM, and if you are a big Sam fan (like I am), this is the ultimate album for you.

  3. I remember well when I first heard this album - it was my freshman year at college & a friend of mine had the tape. For the next hour or so, I felt like Sam had smashed me over the head with his mike stand. It was a REVELATION. I could not believe what I was hearing--it was beyond Murphy, Pryor, everybody...it made his so-called "rival" Andrew Dice Clay look like the rank amateur he truly was. The fact that the album has never been re-released is quite frankly a travesty. What I wouldn't give to hear a Sam Kinison/Howard Stern compilation from all the radio appearances Sam did on Stern's show. Sam: truly one for the ages.

  4. This is some of my favorite material of Sam's. Some of this you've seen him do on his first HBO special. There is an intimate nightclub feeling to the recording that I prefer to the stadium level-volume of his later albums. This also contains the great bit "A Letter From Home", which he never did on TV, but which some might remember from the documentary on Sam.
Also, point of interest: this has only ever seen release on cassette and vinyl. You could still easily find this in the late 90's early 00's in music stores with cassette comedy tapes. This was for sale on Amazon for forever. I finally bought a copy to replace my old one in June '07. The next day after I bought it (for $3.98), it went out of print on Amazon. LITERALLY, I WAS THE LAST ONE TO BUY IT. That's never happened before. So yeah, it's my fault I guess. I mean, was there only one copy left?

  5. Listening to his first album is like listening to a virtuoso playing his finest art. Toss political correctness out the window and get ready for stomach-cramping humor that will leave you rolling on the floor. The acoustics are wonderful, and the audience was spicy enough to give Sam a chance to use his silver bullets on hecklers at the beginning of the album.

Understandably, the Kinison estate won't re-release this gem on CD as they are waiting for the highest bidder to purchase the copyrights for this property.

Sam Kinison's material is fresh as it went beyond the envelope of comedic topics, and everyone in the audience were running out of breath from laughing so much from one screaming punchline to the next.

Mr. Kinison's sense of timing in delivery is impeccable as he copied his father's oratory skills to make a skeptical audience true believers in his routine.

Andrew "Dice" Clay doesn't even come close. He's a mere penny compared the cost of buying this album.

For every other person wanting to know how comedy is done, listen to this difficult-to-find-treasure, and become humbled and enlightened by it.

"OH, GOD, IT'S THE REVELATION!!!... HE WOULD COME TO THE EARTH AND SPEAK OF THE ALPHABET! UR-AGH!"

  1. a classic...sam at his uproarious best...nobody compares...especially that NOBODY bobcat golddigger...long live sam !

  2. This show was done in the early 90's and you could tell. Overall it was a weak stand-up. I can only compare it to when I saw him at his peak in 1994 when he was probably the best Comic around.

  3. It was a great video. For anyone who does not remember Sam's life was abruptly cut short on the night of April 10, 1992 by a head on collision in Needles by a teenaged drunk driver. Sam and his wife were returning from a sold out show in Laughlin when the accident occured. Sam was killed instantly and his wife was also severly injured but she survived. It is a great loss to lose someone such as Sam. Thanks to modern technology he will live on forever. Thanks for all the laughs Sam!!!!!!

  4. carl was just ok; sam was only just ok-best part was his brief phone call. 2 vids were ok. it was just ok to see sally m. on there;thats it. i liked s.k. live-aka break. the rules and s.k. fam. ent. hr. best so far. but want funnier than them yet. oh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  5. this needs to be put on dvd. a must have for all sam kinison fans. r.i.p sam

  1. While I agree with the previous reviewer's assertion that Bill Hicks is unmatched as a social commentator and political comic, Sam Kinison really shouldn't be dismissed as a mere explosive, reactionary xenophobe, especially since Sam Kinison helped launch Bill Hicks' career. Both of them are wonderfully unique and equally brilliant comics in their own ways.

The thing about Sam Kinison is that he says what most Americans are too scared or too brainwashed to say, and he does it with unmatched stage presence and charisma. I feel excited just listening to this guy. He has a way with making massive crowds become just as amped up as they would be at a rock concert. Maybe the title of "Rock & Roll Comic" really does belong to Kinison, and that's definitely not an understatement.

In regard to this particular recording, I'd urge anybody with a sense of humor to check it out. I'm a Bill Hicks fan and I loved it. Give it a try. If you really have the kind of repressed angst that Kinison helps cleanse his listeners of, you'll appreciate every moment of it.

  2. Classic Sam Kinison, with quick wit and a sharp toungue tempered by his trademark laugh Sam Kinison's over the top style is timeless, and still relevant in the new millenium.

  3. Sam Kinison was one of the greatest comedian's in the world,he lived a short life but left a long line of fan's!!

  4. I adore Mr. Kinison but this album just has not held up. There are some very funny things on it, but overall it seems like an old dinosaur, just out of sinc with today's morals.

  5. Sam Kinison is one of the best and most creative comedians I have ever heard, but this CD is an enormous disappointment.

The first track is a meandering 33-minute set that is only occasionally funny. It could have been edited down to ten great minutes.

All of the other tracks consist of Sam and a band performing covers of various hard rock classics. They're not bad, but I did not buy a Sam Kinison CD for music.
