  1. I bought this disc to round out my collection. "Volume 4" was the only one in the six volume "Live and Dirty" series that I didn't have. It's very good, but whenever a performer has to deal with hecklers in the audience, he/she spends too much time reacting to them and less time "getting on with the show," as it were. Foxx handles the hecklers on this recorded performance very well, but they are a distraction nonetheless. What's more, these particular hecklers refuse to pipe down and just let Foxx do his thing. There are many gems here, however, including "When You Finish Your Homework" and "They All Look Alike to Me." Don't let the three stars totally discourage you. All the discs in the "Live and Dirty" series are excellent, as far as Foxx himself is concerned. He is performing in a warm, intimate setting with his piano player providing the atmosphere. Foxx's timing is devastating, and his warm, easy way with the audience gives one a glimpse into his personality. "Volume 4" is definitely good, but certain things, namely hecklers, prevent it from being great.

  1. Redd Foxx was before my time, but his comedy remains as potent today as it was during my father's. The 'Live and Dirty' series of albums was recorded in various spots where Foxx performed his stand-up, largely in bars and Vegas spots. His humor was one of the first to be storytelling rather than composed of one-liners and shorts. His stand-up mixed improved and stock humor extremely well, and his delivery is such that even when he creates or points out something visual, your imagination has no trouble catching exactly was was done and meant. While this is definatly not for minors, it is a great tyle of humor for adults.

  2. Redd Foxx comes at you in so many ways.I use to watch Sanford&Son all of the time in Re-Runs.but when I Found out about his Stage Show I had to Check it out.this is One of The Many must Haves by Mr.Foxx.He tells a Story&hits you with many Cleaver Lines. When he gets on a Roll he is Unstoppable.this is Classic Foxx Material.

  3. With piano accompaniment, Redd Foxx relaxes and effortlessly cracks up yet another audience. His humor rings down the years and makes me, a guy who was just in his teens when Foxx was coming out of his prime, laugh my hind-end off.

It's a free and easy evening, customers are ordering drinks, waitresses are asking Foxx what he himself will be imbibing, he notices some folks he knows when they amble in (including Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., whom Foxx recognizes as "the man who gave me the opportunity to be in Cotton Comes to Harlem") and as for the folks who dare to try and get into the act, including one overly zealous African-American gentleman, he chides, "Don't try to get into the show. You ain't in show business. Go someplace else and hurt a white act." No one is immune from his jibes, including a Japanese-American gentleman whom Foxx gracefully acknowledges and says "I had so much fun in Japan, I hope we fight 'em again!"

Throughout the proceedings, however, no one is made uncomfortable. His rebuttals to his hecklers are never cruel and the overall mood of the recording is very light. The jokes are off-color, but far from obscene (whatever that means). Foxx's timing and friendly way of dealing with his audience are things which comedians today would be wise to pick up on. Foxx was one of the true masters of his craft and, for the most part, his delivery was creative and often very subtle. Half of his effectiveness is his dancing around intimate subjects rather than trying to hit the audience over the head with them.

If you're a fan of Redd Foxx, or if you're just someone who would like to be put in a relaxed, happy mood, then this inexpensive disc is the one you should check out. Out of the entire Live and Dirty/Funny series, this and Vol. II are the most effective. Have fun!

  1. As I write this,I have the CD playing in the background and a smile on my face. You will never tire of this great work. Foxx's jokes will make you laugh as much the tenth time around as they did initially. Foxx not only tells jokes, he paints a masterpiece of comic genius. A must have for any fan of Redd.

  2. REDD FOXX never lets up here. The Man IS A Genius. He always Keeps You ROlling.Just the way he tells Jokes&Stories Alone puts him in a Class All By Himself.

  3. Redd Foxx's stuff on this CD may have been funny in the 50's but it is lukewarm in this day and time; especially when it's compared to his recent work such as, "Redd Foxx in a Plain Brown Wrapper." I was sorely dissappointed in this CD.

  4. Excellent compilation of Foxx' early work. Whether you sneaked to listen to this stuff as a kid or are only familiar with Foxx thru Fred Sanford, this is good stuff from one of the few comedians who mastered joke telling and one-liners. Highlights-The Jackass Story, The New Fugg, Cork Soakers and Mother Frockers, and Home on The Range.

  1. Nothing against Redd Foxx, but this CD was definitely a letdown. The 'explicit lyrics' were no doubt explicit in 1950 but I was shocked at how tame the material was after hearing numerous times what a raunchy mouth Redd Foxx had. Maybe that was left off of this CD, I don't know. I might have chuckled at 5 tracks or so, but that was it. Also, many of the tracks were 5 seconds or less, just a quick one liner. I won't say it was a total waste of money, just probably not what you are expecting. Not what I was expecting anyway...

  3. Just because the lyrics weren't "filthy", doesn't mean this comedic genius wasn't funny. I was rolling on the floor with laughter. Many of Redd's jokes make you think. None of his jokes were vulgar, which is what most comics today use. This is an excellent comedic CD.

  4. Many of the best comedians of the last few decades owe a debt to Redd Foxx. This is a great collection of his work.

  1. Like Vol. I of the Live and Dirty/Funny series, Redd Foxx is taking it easy, and he has some pleasant back and forths with some of the folks in his very appreciative audience.

Highlights include a story about a Viet Nam veteran whom the President tries to decorate, two hapless campers who run into a hungry grizzly, a very funny joke about a cannibal chief and a witch doctor, and the various reasons why certain politicians got into office while others didn't.

Foxx chats with an amiable lady from New York and the various differences between East and West (coasts, that is) are discussed, including how stringent clubs are at closing time in both L.A. and New York. He keeps coming back to this lady and their interplay gives the disc a very cool sort of continuity. In fact, the best overall thing about this CD is Foxx's repartee with the audience. He's not at all arrogant or unapproachable, and he makes everybody in the club feel welcome and comfortable. I felt welcome and comfortable in the club, and I was in my living room!

This and Vol. I of the Live and Dirty/Funny series are the most effective of the bunch, so even if you're just getting into Redd Foxx, if you want many laughs for just a few dollars, pick up Vols. I & II. You won't be disappointed.

  2. not only for party records but also for story-telling Redd Foxx is high on my list of people that have Influenced me over the years. He had a unique way of getting His message across&Being cleaver about it&witty all at once.nothing is off-limits with Redd&I dig that element most about His Genius.

  1. REDD FOXX un-Loads here.it's Funny non-stop.His Material Has Punch all the way thru.Redd is a Pioneer Of Comedy&deserves more props than he ever gets.A Genius Of Story-Telling&Stage.

  2. Performed in front of an African-American audience, Uncensored sees Redd Foxx seeming very relaxed as he delivers joke after hilarious joke. The audience is with him, he's with them, and it all makes for a very pleasurable, uplifting and genuinely funny listening experience.

He tells of unfaithful wives, cannibal chiefs, the origins of certain black expressions, contemplates what would happen if only Liberace, Johnny Mathis and Sonny Liston survived WWIII and even relates a story of Moses, St. Peter and "J.C." playing a friendly game of golf. He tells one tale after another to an audience that is very hugely enjoying itself.

The title of the CD might fool you. Foxx's material is not explicit. It's more implicit and subtle, and this was the man's genius. Unlike today, a comedian couldn't just come out and "say it." He had to be crafty about it or face whatever would ensue, be it censorship, arrest, or some other consequence. Foxx was one of the masters of this type of craftiness. This is why, in my opinion, his stuff is infinitely more clever than most of the raw stuff that's out there today.

One of the other things that made Foxx great was his interplay with his audience. Behind the raspy voice, pinpoint timing and wonderfully bawdy humor, was a caring, sensitive man who was aware that, perhaps, his audience really needed to let go. Many times, you can hear him say, "Go on and laugh, honey" or "You can laugh out loud here, friends." Also, to his credit, in all the recordings I have of Foxx (and I have a few), he was never cruel with the people that came to see him, unlike so many comedians of today. This undercurrent of true sensitivity amidst all the laughs, at least to me, was what made Foxx a truly great comedian.

Foxx saw hard times when he was starting out in comedy, and I get the impression that he was sensitive to the fact that perhaps some of his audience might've been going through some hard times, as well. Even years after the material was initially recorded, whenever you let Redd Foxx take a spin on your turntable or in your CD player, be it in the form of Uncensored or any of his many other albums, you end up in a better mood. I'm sure his audience of the time felt the exact same way.

  3. MAN THIS GUY IS A GENUIS HE'S AN ALL AMERICAN AND I
    WILL GIVE HIM 5STARS

  4. I was looking forward to some classic Redd Foxx material. What I got was pitifully unfunny and horribly recorded. This actually sounds like a "Worst of Redd Foxx" recording. It's a pity because the man was so much better than what this product shows.
I tried to give zero stars, but the review form forces you to give at least one star.
The only guarantee here is, if you buy it, you will be let down.

  1. I first had this recording on 8-track, it is a easy listening Redd Foxx album, which has material used in many of his other works.

  2. We bought this because both my boyfriend and I had heard it many moons ago and had fond memories of the late Redd Foxx. Not many know of him as a stand up comedian but he was one of the greatest. He inspired so many comics today. We loved listening to it and hearing the jokes again. Great live performance.

  1. this man could tell stories.he could tell jokes and could keep people in the palm of his hands.this man's disc has legend written all over it.very funny straight up.

  2. This isn't your parents's Sanford & Son Redd Foxx! This disc presents a ton of really good routines and one-liners from the man who started "blue" comedy. Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce both come out of this man, and it shows fairly well on this disc. It's not as nasty or blue as some of his other records, but it does show Foxx at the top of his form telling stories ("Letter To A Wife" is incredible, even by today's standards) and joke after joke after joke. The man is an encyclopedia of dirty jokes, and balances his whole act with a strong grip on class, which, considering some of the content, is genius unto itself.

You can find dirtier Foxx, but this collection is a great break-in point for any other purchases you might consider. If you like this one, you'll dig the other stuff. If you don't, lean off it all. This is a great collection of material and scope of Foxx's work.

  3. Before Pryor, Eddie, Martin, Chris Tucker and Chris Rock, there was Redd Foxx. Redd is the the author and originator of Party Humor. He's the true "King of Comedy."

  4. This is a hilarious cd it is very explicit but it is funny this is a legend and he is so funny and I would truly reccommend this cd to anyone who likes Redd Foxx he started out at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York...... This cd is so funny I listen to it all of the time it is explicit so don't listen to it in front of the kids he talks about a lot of things.... But all of the things that he says makes a whole lot of sense!!!!
