3 comments about Mark Twain: A Film Directed by Ken Burns.
  1. This is a slick little recording that sanitizes the tops of the pops of roots music - sort of a roots muzak experience. It's a pleasurable enough listen, and Bobby Horton is a wonder as a solo string player who overdubs up to 7 instruments on a much too up-tempo version of "Hard Times," but it's all just too, too clean. Good background music, though.

  2. As a lover of period music from the 19th century, and a major fan of Mark Twain, I wouldn't be without this CD - or the video it is from. Bobby Horton does a superb job, and listening is a spiritual trip back to a better time.

  3. Music is interspersed with a sprinkling of quotes from Mr. Twain, as candid and clever as you might expect...and brief enough not to interfere with your music listening. Soundtrack feels true to the early american midwest, with authentic acoustic instrumentation. Great fun on roadtrips.

5 comments about Little Voice: Music From The Miramax Motion Picture.
  1. I was getting ready to buy this cd when I looked at the song list and realized that only 2 songs are sung by Jane Horrocks. What's up with that? I agree with Wayne Z. The truly enchanting thing about the movie was Miss Horrocks wonderful ability to capture the essence of the original songs. Nothing against the originals, but unless they come out with a "soundtrack" that includes more of Janes fabulous work, I'll just keep watching the movie.

  2. I gave it one star, because there's only one star on the CD I care to hear, and that's Ms. Jane. Hey Jane baby! Make a CD, I'll buy it! ;)

  3. She just released "The Further Adventures of Little Voice" singing all of the songs herself. It's only released in the UK, but you can order it through 101CD.com. If you love Jane, GET THIS CD!!!

  4. I loved the movie, I love the CD!

  5. In the DVD/movie, the songs and orchestration are overwhelming. Without the video, however, the CD is commonplace, a real disappointment reminiscent of bad 40's and 50's recordings. Therefore, of course, one could say the CD is realistic, but unfortunately probably not in the way intended by its producers.

5 comments about King Kong: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.
  1. Compared to the milestone, classic soundtrack of the original KING KONG, this CD of Peter Jackson's remake has a lot to live up to. In the new KING KONG movie, the music fits in well, even if it does not take on a life of its own, as did the original Max Steiner soundtrack for the original KING KONG film. But this new music really works best as a complement to the onscreen activities only, and is not so engaging on CD, without the story visuals.

Some Soundtracks are great with just the music, this one really needs the movie visuals for the best enjoyment.

This CD seems to follow the chronological order of the events in the film, but this is one CD Soundtrack where they might have been better off changing the song order for a better flow, on CD only (which is a common practise on other soundtrack CDs, like for the STAR WARS films, for example). The early songs are too slow to get moving into the action, and later songs have slow and fast parts, so it becomes a little frustrating, waiting for action, then getting a little excitement, then crashing into stillness again.

Individually each song seems good, but when I try to listen to the whole CD, I get restless waiting for something interesting. I think I will resequence the songs and burn my own CD in a more appealing song sequence (that's legal since I own the CD, of course).

  2. Not the best score I've ever heard. Certainly not bad, some tracks were very nice. Unfortunately, a good deal of them are too action-oriented for my liking, or simply boring. The best piece of music from the film, the beautifully haunting female chorus played over the spider pit scene (best part of the movie!), is sadly nowhere to be found on this disc. I don't doubt Howard's talent as a composer, but the music for King Kong, sadly, doesn't have the same bite as the movie.

  3. After Lord of the Rings collaborator Howard Shore had his fully written score rejected due to the ever popular "creative differences" in Peter Jackson's film, James Newton Howard stepped in and had about a month and a half to write a monumental amount of music. He stepped up to the challenge and wrote a blowout score that awes and amazes at each turn. I can only imagine what kind of score he would have come up with if he had a much longer period of time to write the score, but in any case, he succeeds all the same.
King Kong has an established theme throughout the score, represented by a 7-note motif that is both ominous and bold. It is featured whenever the big ape is on screen, as well as when he is somewhere lurking about on the island. Since the film takes place in the 1930s, Howard wrote some period music in many cues of the first half of the score, which feature appropriate pianos and jazzy woodwinds.
As the crew makes their way to the island, the music shifts into a more ominous and more action-oriented approach, as they try to survive and capture the beast. The music throughout the majority of the second half of the album is awe-inspiring, resilient, and frankly breath-taking. The orchestra is strident, the chorus is bold, and the percussion is propulsive. "Tooth and Claw" is a very impressive action-oriented track with plenty of fast-paced, heavy brass lines, whirling strings, and racing percussion. The "awe-factor" is present in most of the cues, such as "It's Deserted", where you can only imagine viewing the island for the first time as the ship nears its destination.
The grand finale consists of "The Empire State Building" as well as "Beauty Killed the Beast" (not how the Disney film ended as you may recall...). Here the orchestra and chorus give everything they've got, building and building to an emotional and powerful climax as the great beast falls to his demise.
This is one of James Newton Howard's finest works, which proves that he is one of the best composers out there. A highly recommended score with 74 minutes of outstanding music. You would be a fool to pass this one up!!

  4. I watched the Extended Deluxe Edition of King Kong recently. When the opening credits ran I knew I HAD to get the soundtrack. I found it here and ordered it. When I recieved it I was very pleased. It has become one of my favorite scores by Newton Howard.

  5. While I expected a certain amount of powerful action music--in keeping with the fact that King Kong is an action film--I felt this cd soundtrack focused excessively on action music, and that the touching and beautiful selections in the film's more tender scenes were woefully ignored. They are there, but in what feels to be abbreviated forms, as though the powers behind the cd decided to add them as a brief afterthought. If you found the more sensitive music in the film is what drove you to consider the cd (as I did) then you'll find this cd too abrasive for too long to just enjoy easy listening. The quality of the musical compositions is not lacking--it's good action music--but this is not a cd comfortable to listen to for long periods. If you are producing a back yard play, and need some pounding action music that goes on and on, then this cd is for you. If you don't have a headache, and would like one, then this cd is for you. They ought to release a secondary cd that contains only full-scale versions of the beautiful instrumentation present in more sensitive scenes. Now THAT'S a cd I'd enjoy.

5 comments about Damn Yankees: 1994 Original Broadway Cast Recording.
  1. Sorry -- didn't see the musical. (I'm a Yankee fan!)

I just wanted to clarify the angst over Joe (apparently) circling the bases during his transformation back to a middle-aged man -- rather than catching the final out.

Or at least give an explanation.

In the original novel, Joe DID hit a HR. However, while he was circling the bases, he began transforming back to his mortal self. Gasping and wheezing, Joe crawled his way across home plate.

  2. I saw the musical back in 1994, and met the stars of the show as well. Jarrod Emmick was one of the most gifted newcomers to broadway that I had seen in years, with a voice that could lift a house off the ground. I remembered Victor Garber from years ago, when he was in the movie, "Godspell" - I have his autograph on my tape of the soundtrack, in fact. I also had this album on tape, signed by the principals, but I can't seem to find it - it seems to be lost somewhere. At any rate, I'm not too upset - I still have the cover, which has the cast signatures on it. I intend to purchase the CD, since I don't think they sell tapes anymore. It was a wonderful show, and I deeply cherish the soundtrack which, for me, preserves the wonderful memories I have of the show and the people in it that I met. I would highly recommend it - especially if you were lucky enough to have seen the show.

  3. Okay. Maybe this 1994 revival of Faust in the baseball world isn't as revered as the 1950's original featuring Gwen Verdon. But it has sterling sound quality and is one of the few cast albums that almost allows you to understand the story just via the songs.

It's also a must buy due to the vocal pyrotechnics of Jarrod Emick. Emick's range and power are stunning. He literally blasts onstage as the younger incarnation of Shoeless Joe Jackson. In later numbers ("A Man Doesn't Know," the gorgeous multi-part "Near to You") his voice is quiet, controlled and unique. He sounds like no one else.

I saw the show during its initial release and left the show a fan for life. It's one of those rare times in the theater (seeing Idina Menzel in "Wicked" was another) where someone or something comes out of left field and makes you say "wow." This person is an astounding talent. He seems able to hit just about any note - high or low - and like Menzel can raise goosebumps. He's about to hit Broadway again in the Johnny Cash musical review "Ring of Fire." He should be a HUGE Broadway star and recording solo albums of his own. Why he's not is a mystery.

Bebe Neuwirth fares less well in her comic turn as Lola. While an amazing dancer and great comic actress, her comic faux Latin accent spoils the big "Whatever Lola Wants" number. This may have gone over well in 1950's America. But it's borderline offensive now.

Vicki Lewis, prior to her sitcom days, plays a reporter and delivers a rousing "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal Mo." Her energy and comic timing are impressive. I found her singing impressive. Victor Garber's devil keeps the plot moving along. But it's Emick's performance that keeps the show centered.

  4. Unfortunately its true, the Damn Yankees revival took many, many liberties and changed quite a bit of the show. However I happen to like this recording better. "Near To You" as a three way song, is AMAZING. Its worth it just for that song. I'll say the original Old Joe, was better than on this recording, but this recordings Lola is better. So, get both, I did. If you can only choose one though, I would go with this one. The orchestra is so much fuller. Favorite Song: "Near To You"

  5. LOVE THE CD, BRAND NEW AND REMINDS ME OF WHEN I SAW THE CLOSING SHOW WITH JERRY LEWIS ON BROADWAY. THE PRICE WAS GREAT AND SO WAS THE SERVICE. THANKS A BUNCH FOR A GREAT CD

  1. This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

  2. THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

  3. This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

  4. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

  5. The first three discs were only OK. I had forgotten how much better the later Broadway musical recordings were. The last two discs were very good, maybe because I could relate better to the shows or perhaps the productions were better.

5 comments about Bye Bye Birdie (1963 Film Soundtrack).
  1. I always enjoyed the film version of "Birdie" as well as the soundtrack and now this reissue includes "The Sultans Ballet" where Janet Leigh bites off more than she can chew when she invites a group of Sultans(Shriners) to dance. There are a couple of minor inclusions including "We Love You Conrad" and the rehearsal of "One Last Kiss" My only question is why didnt they use the complete version of "A Lot of Livin To Do" Even with the additional tracks the CD clocks in at 46 minutes so space wasn't a problem. It's quite understandable why the Russian Ballet was not included since it would be out of place on an otherwise perky and bright score.

While "Bye Bye Birdie" may not be one of the best scores it is zesty and cheerful to listen to on a gloomy day and as one of the numbers suggests it helps you to "Put On A Happy Face"

  2. This is still such a classic and so much fun!

  3. I love this soundtrack! it's great for kids and adults all the like. the songs are funny and have good catchy beats to them.

  4. Was so happy to see this CD reissued! Especially the additional music and photos! The opening and closing numbers are the best! Ann Margret singing the title song was a fantasy for so many young men in the 60's! There will never be a better performance on film!

  5. I love this soundtrack. The songs sound just like they do in the movie, except that at last you get to hear "One Last Kiss" all the way to the end! Yay!

5 comments about Portishead - Roseland New York.
  1. I started live concert DVD's about a year ago, and since then I've been soaking it up. Cowboy Junkies, David Bowie, The Eagles, anything and everything Pink Floyd, and most recently Portishead, Roseland New York. First off if you like Portishead, theres no need to read this....go buy this DVD, NOW! If you've never listened to Portishead before, I suggest you go right now and buy some CD's, and this DVD....also NOW! I will say this though, Portishead is not for everyone, heck my wife hated it the first listen or two, but now, she's bewitched just like me, its hard for me to compare them to someone, I wouldn't know where to start, maybe Morcheeba, Sia, or even Sade (maybe). Well I hope this helps, either way I'll be enjoying the DVD regardless.

  2. I finally got around to picking up this dvd about a year ago. I had been aware of it a couple years prior, but just never got around to picking it up. I had been a fan (about 7 on a scale of 10) of theirs since hearing their first album a few years before that. When I got around to their second album, I thought it seemed too much like a rehash of the first, but eventually, I began to enjoy it on it's own merits, wondering how I ever dismissed it in the first place. Strange how that happens, isn't it?

So, flash forward to last year, as I was looking for a new Portishead fix, given the sparsity of material they've provided us with. Because the reviews I had seen had been favorable, I decided to grab this dvd (Christmas gift, actually), even though there wasn't really new material here, so much as a different context to hear the same songs again.

Upon viewing it the first time, I thought it was very good. I played it several times in that first couple of weeks. Even now, a year later, I still have the urge to pull it out and play it. I always succumb to these urges! To put it simply, I ADORE THIS DVD!!! I know how we are all individuals, with different tastes, backgrounds, blah blah blah, but I simply cannot fathom anyone not finding something to enjoy about this dvd. It's got drama, it's got beat, it's got strangely beguiling soundscapes, it's got a torchy, twitchy, tortured vocals. Of all the music performance dvds I own, a mere 25 or so, I must say this is my absolute favorite. As has been repeated, well, repeatedly here.. if you are already a Portishead fan, and not even necessarily a diehard-type, you really MUST OWN THIS DVD. There is not a "NO" option for you. Beg, borrow, steal, if you must, but must is the key word here!

A WORD OR THREE ABOUT BETH - Beth's vocals are spot on. I was pleasantly surprised by how good she sounded in a live environment. And she is a joy to watch. You can tell that in her personal, non-performing life, she is probably quite insecure, shy and just generally uncomfortable with the whole "famous artist" thing. That hunched-over posture of hers, frail demeanor, chain-smoking countenance is quite amusing to me. But watching her sing, the way she gets into the songs, her face contorting itself to mirror the personality of the vocal, well, it's terrifically entertaining to watch.

    RANDOM NITPICKS:

    1) While the street scenes video cutaway during the performance of 'Undenied' is compelling in it's own way, I really wish we could have gotten to see more of Beth's anguished vocal performance during this song. As it is, they only show her for a brief amount of time at the beginning and the very end of the song. I also liked the slightly different lighting used during this middle interlude segment, which included this song, as well as other live rehearsal performances, mixed in with stage setup video. The rehearsal lighting was more flattering to Beth than the concert lighting. Not that the concert lighting was bad, per se, just that I liked the different lighting ambience provided during the rehearsal segment more in this one respect, plus, just as a "change of pace".

    2) A couple of their promo song videos don't make for very compelling viewing. Still, it's nice to have a bunch of them all collected in one place.

    3) As someone else mentioned, it's a cheat to include the song 'Western Eyes' in the concert setlist, as it's only the studio version heard over the end credits. What a great song though! Even though I can listen to it on cd anytime, I often just let the dvd end credits roll just so I can hear this song.

    4) What the hell goes on in their short film, 'To Kill a Dead Man'?!?!? Ok, so this isn't a complaint so much as, goshdarn, I wish I could figure out what the plot was. I have a few ideas, but more concrete info would be nice. (yes, this is a pitiful plea for some subsequent reviewer to fill me in!). Getting this back to more review-like commentary.. this is an interesting little film they've put together, however, I suspect, unlike the dvd concert portion, it will only be of interest to already confirmed Portishead fans. The last 30 seconds or so of the film, the look on Beth's face just slays me for some reason. I cannot properly articulate what I like about it, but I keep coming back to view this film short for this reason. Well, the way the music builds toward this ending is a major attractor as well.

    5) A couple of the shots centered on the audience members were annoying to me. The guy holding his drink, eyes closed, emoting along with the song, for example. I could go into a long analytical thing as to why this bugs me, but I won't bore you with THAT. :P

PS: Thank you for allowing me to meander on your time. Hopefully you enjoy this review of mine. If not, you know what to do. And I will accept your withering judgements with all the anonymous resentment I can muster.

  3. If you enjoy the music of Portishead then this dvd is a must have. Includes their best tracks live. It makes you wish you had seen them live when they were together.

  4. A fantastic DVD for the fans of Portishead. The only drawback is that it isn't 16:9!

  5. A great performance, that's no doubt; however, the dimwits in NYC decided to have a little clap-a-long to "Roads" that absolutely ruins the recording. Worry not, there is no audible clapping on the DVD, so buy this version. CD and vinyl are garbage. Thanks New York, we can always count on you to destroy everything we hold dear.
