  1. I bought this CD having already purchased most of the Little Mermaid soundtracks available. There's only one song on this CD I didn't previously own, which is "Dance the Day Away". While I don't regret my purchase for this one above average song, more Jodi Benson biased fans wouldn't find what they are looking for in this CD. Where's the all time classic "Part of Your World"? Or "Just a Little Love"? or my personal favourite "Dreaming"?

The cover art is beautiful, and the CD includes a booklet with some hard-to-find lyrics to some of the songs from the TV series. There is also an offer for a free Ariel lithograph, but this expired early 1999 and is pretty much useless.

I would only recommend this CD for true Little Mermaid/Ariel fanatics (like myself). For those of you looking for higher quality Jodi Benson vocals, I recommend the classic Little Mermaid Original Soundtrack, "Splash Hits" or "Songs from the Sea".

  2. I don't have got this album, but I have listened to all the songs in it. Because many songs in this album also featured in "Songs from the Sea" and "Splash Hits". But I have to admit that the cover of this album is much more cuter than other two!
Well, I don't have no more to say. These songs in this album are my favourites:
What's it like to be a Mermaid?
    Dance The Day Away
    My Room in the Sea
The Edge of Edge of the Sea
    Coconut
    In Harmony
    The Sea Kingdom

  1. I watched the movie two times, and I liked " Titanic Tip and Daring Dash." That song ROX! There are some songs that were boring and not too good for me, like " Here on the Land and Sea", and " For a Moment." That's why I rated it 4 starz. But they still have great songs there!

  2. it was a great cd that everybody needs to own. the song titanic tip and daring dash has u singing along without realizing u r. any age group can see the movie and here the songs on it and love it

  3. I loved this soundtrack! It was just as good as the original. From the heartwarming songs "For a Moment" and "Down to the Sea" to the exciting "Titanic Tip and Daring Dash", the soundtrack and the movie were both excellent. I would recommend both of these to people of all ages.

  4. What a good soundtrack!"For a moment"is my favourite!Tara Charendoff 's voice was so good and sweet, but I like Jodi Benson's voice better. The three or four songs of Sabastian are good too.Ilove"Give a little love".In my opinion,it's the best of the four.

  5. When I first saw the movie, the music in it impressed me much. Then I decided to buy this soundtrack.
I was so excited that Jodi Benson returned in the music in Little Mermaid's sequel, her voice always intertain me much! The song "For A Moment" is which I love best. I can feel the happiness of a new mermaid, how Ariel missed her daughter, and something more. "Tip & Dash" is comical, and Melody's voice is so sweet and cute. "Down to the Sea" and "Here on the Land and Sea" are not very different from each other, cheerful and inspiring. The songs that Sebastian performed are not as good as the songs from the movie, and I can't figure out why they were recorded in this soundtrack. However, the songs "Iko, Iko, Iko" and "Give A Little Love" are good.
This soundtrack is not complete. Firstly, the songs from the movie haven't been completely recorded in the soundtrack, the end title "Part of Your World" was so beautiful, but why it's not here? And the Chinese edition has not only the end title but also 2 other songs that Sebastian sang. Secondly, there's no scores in this soundtrack, but thought the scores in the movie are not very exceptional, I wish this soundtrack could be complete.

  1. I loved the music in this movie and decided to try out the CD. The music is beautiful and peaceful. The song estoy loco is very cute! Try it!

  2. Paulie was the best movie and best soundtrack about a bird. Especially conure! Conures rule!!1 It's got great music for all ages!!!!

  3. i saw the movie and i closely listin to the music its relaxing and it make you feel good

  4. John Debney always has the knack for composing brilliant orchestral themes and over all beautiful music. While there is less than a half an hour of actual score on the CD, I would highly recommend picking up this CD. The score on the CD has its quiet moments, its mischevious moments, and of course moments of pure inspiration. Very few of Mr. Debney's works are released commercially, however take full advantage of the fact that this score is and snatch it up immediately.

  1. Well, the original soundtrack is awesome. But the Return to the Sea..... not the best. I recommend that you get the original soundtrack and leave the double pack.
P.S. Also Highly Recommended Soundtracks: Aladdin, The Lion King

  2. Why is everybody saying this CD was bad, save one person??? The soundtrack for the original movie was wonderful, as can be expected. As for the second one, that was pretty good...at least most of them. I loved that lullaby Ariel sings to baby Melody, as well as a few others (something I can't currently remember). However, if unsure as to whether to buy this complete collection, I STRONGLY suggest buying just the regular ole Little Mermaid soundtrack, seeing as how so many people weren't pleased with the second...

  3. I love "The little mermaid", no mater the original or the second one. I bought this album with the help of one of my friends. It was expensive, but it's worth buying! The music in this two movies are wonderful, and I love Jodi Benson's voice very much! Her voice is like a bell and it's very sweet and beautiful. Tara Charendoff's voice is lovely too! The song named "For a moment" which Jodi Benson and Tara Charendoff sang together was beautiful and enchanted, I felt warm inside when I heard it. I suggest that if you're a fan of The Little Mermaid, don't miss this good album!

  4. Before I bought this album, I thought it was printed in the U.S.A, but I found it was made in Australia when I receive it. However, it's not important that where it printed. This album collected almost all songs from the 2 movies of Little Mermaid, so it's really colletable to real Little Mermaid fans!
Well, the soundtrack of "The Little Mermaid" is very familiar to many Disney fans and it will always be classic. The song "Part of Your World" is still so beautiful and calssic even though more than 10 years had passed. Jodi Benson's voice is always so unforgettable to every Disney fans, so to me. Especially the reprise of "Part of Your World", I can feel Ariel's steadfast faith and her beautiful dream from her voice. "Part of Your World" is the best ever in my opinion, even "Under the Sea" can't be compared with it!
But then, in the soundtrack of "The Little Mermaid-2: Return to the Sea", the musical legend continued! Every character performed perfectly. To my excitement, Jodi Benson returned! "For a Moment" is one of my favourites, and it's really indescribable! The melody and the lyric are beautiful. Maybe it feels better if you listen to it with watching the movie. "Down to the Sea" is a vivid and festive song, but it's a little confusing, and so is "Here on the Land and Sea". "Tatanic Tip and Daring Dash" is not much of a good song, but it's quite funny, and Melody's voice is so cute! However, this soundtrack is very imcomplete, there are 11 tracks in which I bought in China. The end title "Part of Your World" is in it too.
Generally speaking, this is really a good collection, you can collect all songs of Little Mermaid in only 1 purchase!

  5. Both of these CDs are so much fun to listen too. My 4 year old daughter's dance recital this year is Little Mermaid and she's dancing to IKO IKO off LM II. She's so excited about it. Her and my 17 month old could listen to them all day long and sing and dance. Sometimes Mommy joins them too!! Highly recommended for all the little princess' out there.

  1. This is a great CD for kids and parents alike, as long as you like a lot of the wordless songs from the movie as well. There are not a lot of sing-a-long songs on this cd but my Little Mermaid fanatic loves it just the same. She knows the story so well she tells it along with the music as she listens. A great buy for Disney collectors, classic lovers, or true Little Mermaid fans. Others should perhaps stick to the Princess collection and other Disney compilations instead.

  2. I Love The Little Mermaid It Is One Of My World Greatest Favorite Disney Animated Film Ever. Ariel Who Plays The Little Mermaid, She Is The World's Most Super Fantastic Mermaid In The World.

  1. Great. Most of these songs can be found on albums available from each artist. Some of the vocals sung in-film are disregarded for the professional versions that do a good job of white-washing credits with tinny soundtrack. But what I find to be greatly disappointing is the sore lack of Danny Elfman's contribution to the film in this 'original soundtrack.'

    Try again, studio.

Look for 'Music for a Darkened Theatre, Vol. 1' if you want to hear Elfman's number and don't mind receiving a whole package of his other work.

  2. I could find Put A Little Love In Your heart. The Al Green/Annie Lennox pairing seemed odd back then, but sounded great and still does.

4 comments about I Had a Ball (1964 Original Broadway Cast).
  1. It's about time.

Fun, uneven, weird, anything but boring, and featuring the talents of Richard Kiley and the underrrrrated Karen Morrow.

Thanks to Lypsinka for unearthing this gem in her show. Lyppie incorporates "I've Got Everything I Want" by Morrow into the act and it is never a drag. Find this track and hit "repeat!"

  2. I HAD A BALL is another of those fascinating Broadway flops that one can't help but fall in love with. A bouncy and tuneful score by Stan Freeman and Jack Lawrence and a cast led by Karen Morrow, Richard Kiley, Luba Lisa and Buddy Hackett are the main draw-cards of this musical.

The only really memorable songs of this score are those sung by veteran Broadway belter Karen Morrow: "I've Got Everything I Want", "Almost" and the Title Song. Luba Lisa impresses with the comical number "Addie's At It Again", while Richard Kiley (MAN OF LA MANCHA) sings delightfully in "The Other Half of Me".

Composer Jack Lawrence has recently come forth with some rather-startling stories of the late Buddy Hackett. Hackett apparently loved upstaging Karen Morrow during her big number "I've Got Everything I Want", refused to have an understudy and demanded over-the-title billing. He also stipulated that his should be the only picture on the posters and cast-album cover.

Included on this reissue are additional cover versions of "I Had a Ball" and "Almost", recorded by Karen Morrow for the Mercury label, and two trunk songs that were cut during out-of-town tryouts.

    Highly-recommended.

  3. I Had a Ball has, truly, only one powerful thing going for it but as that thing is Karen Morrow it is one truly blessed jewel. When she launches into I Had a Ball or wails through Almost and I've Got Everything I Want it is to hear the magical sound of olden days when belters ruled the stages. She does not have quite the control of a Dolores Gray but half the fun of listening to her is to hear her heading to over the top and holding it there, ever so briefly, and just barely pulling it back. Buddy Hackett's name recieves top billing but the CD does not belong to him. Richard Kiley, Luba Lisa, and Rosetta Le Noire give able support in weaker numbers. This is in no way a good show or a good score but that did not stop the singers from giving good performances.

  4. God love a belter! Karen Morrow's strong, clear voice is one that instantly makes my soul smile. Listening to her is like what I would imagine sunshine should sound like.

All that being said, she's really the only reason to buy this score. A good reason... but the only reason.

5 comments about It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World: Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack [Enhanced CD].
  1. This soundtrack is one of my favorite Ernest Gold works. I waited years for this to be available on CD. The score was touted as one of the stars of the film, and those who have seen this wonderfully humorous epic, like myself, would certainly agree. Even though no single cut from this soundtrack was distinctive enough on its own to ever make its mark in radio play, listeners will vividly recall scenes from the movie as they browse the tracks. I particularly enjoy the Main Title, Music at the Big W, and Adios Santa Rosita, among others. This soundtrack is reasonably listenable on its own. It includes a variety of musical styles wrapped together with a recurring theme that identifies itself as part of this classic film that is a who's who of comedy actors of it's time. If you haven't seen the 1963 film, get that as well - an all time comedy classic.

Any of Ernest Gold's soundtracks are worth having if you like his music. Judgement at Nuremburg is a reprint of the original soundtrack and is now available. Other Ernest Gold soundtracks that I have heard include Exodus (with its famous theme music that did make radio play in its time), Ship of Fools, and On the Beach, an early cold war doomsday classic. By the way, with the exception of Exodus, the other films mentioned here were all directed by Stanley Kramer. Another collaboration between these two men was The Secret of Santa Vittoria, a WWII comedy/drama. Get your Ernest Gold now before it goes out of print.

  2. Though touted as an original "soundtrack" recording, this is in actuality an original "score" recording. The soundtrack was recorded with the 106 member Los Angeles Philharmonic. This disc is a re-recording with a 65 piece orchestra, helmed by composer Ernest Gold. However, all of the well remembered themes are here, and some bits of memorable dialogue. Also included are full versions of "Thirty One Flavors," and "You Satisfy My Soul" - the songs heard during the scenes with Dick Shawn and Barrie Chase. All in all, a fun listening experience of music which was as much a character in the film as any of the actors.

  3. If you loved the movie, you'll love this CD. I have seen the movie dozens of times and it's just wonderful to have the music available when I drive around, though somewhat less madly than these characters. The CD has all the essential musical elements from the movie and immediately calls to mind those parts of the film that are assocaited with it. Thanks, Mr. Gold, for having the foresight to produce it. The information that comes with the CD is great, too.

  4. This is not the exact music heard in the movie. It is a remake. Someone should issue the ACTUAL music soundtrack heard in the movie on cd. They Could Take The Original 6-Track 70mm Optical Soundtracks, and use a mixing board to get rid of the dialogue and sound effects, and edit the selections to how they are heard on this CD, but they would be the originals heard in the movie (maybe throw in some extra music from the movie that has never appeared on any of the soundtrack albums in the past 41 years, hint, hint :). Until then, I guess this is as good as it gets.

  5. Ernest Gold was so adept at his craft, it is hard to believe that much of his career was spent scoring unremarkable television programs and B-movies. His long-running relationship with director Stanley Kramer led to many collaborations, including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World in 1963. Billed as "the comedy to end all comedies," this star-studded, Ultra Panavision 70 spectacle needed a rollicking soundtrack to match. And that, Ernest Gold delivered. Gold's "merry-go-round" approach captures the essence of Mad World's fruitless race perfectly; carefully orchestrated themes reflect and magnify the on-screen action.

That stated, this compilation has its shortcomings. Obviously, this recording is not the original soundtrack but is instead a re-record with a smaller orchestra. The difference is particularly noticeable in the overture. Rather than an overwhelming, thundering chorus, the vocals seem to be coming from a stripped-down ensemble. The arrangements differ from the originals as well, with each track being much shorter than the movie version. Despite these departures from the original soundtrack, this recording is bold and well balanced with fidelity and noise control that is decent for its era. A casual listener would be hard-pressed to distinguish this recording from the actual soundtrack.

Also on the CD are some dialog snippets taken from the movie, but I find these to be excessively annoying. The last track is an excerpt from Something a Little Less Serious, the 1991 making-of feature included on the "restored" video release.

The liner booklet includes a fold-out movie poster--albeit from the 1970 theatrical re-release. The insert also contains notes by score critic Andy Dursin and some interesting photos but looks like a (good) graphic design student's senior project and somehow seems misplaced. (Personal rant:) And enough with plastering that damned MGM lion on everything--Mad World wasn't an MGM release!

  1. A true musical theater classic. Wonderful melodies that will last for years to come.
Other classics not to forget about are:
    Mary Poppins
    My Fair Lady
    The Wizard of Oz
    Chitty Chitty Bang Band
The first Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
    The Sound of Music
    Oliver
    West Side Story
    Fiddler on the Roof
    Singing in the Rain
    The Wiz
    Little Mermaid
    Aladdin
    Beauty and the Beast
    Grease
    The King and I
    Oklahoma
    The Music Man
    South Pacific

My Voice Students are always asking me for recommendations so I though I'd post it for all! We can't forget about these great musicals!

  2. I love this music, reminds me of watching the movie in the theater many many many years ago...
Opie was so cute back then...
    What happened?

  3. Robert Preston's version of The Music Man is the ONLY version - Matthew Broderick is NOT the Music Man!!!

  4. The music is fun but a bit "raw" sounding. I thought it was going to sound more studio edited like other soundtracks I own. I still enjoy the CD though. My kids enjoy it too.

  5. When I was a kid my family had The Music Man on video. I don't remember when I saw it last, but I got this soundtrack yesterday and played through it a couple times. I always enjoyed the movie and this CD captures all the fun I remember.

Robert Preston is excellent as the fast-talking con man Harold Hill (reprising the role he originated on Broadway) and Shirley Jones is good as Marian the Librarian. The songs (with some dialogue cues) are pulled right out of the movie, so the sound may not be as crisp and clear as a Broadway cast recording may be. But the sound is decent nonetheless and the music is wonderful.

The CD includes (as far as I can remember) all the songs from the movie. The first track is actually three songs back-to-back-to-back (the orchestral theme, the salesmen on the train, and the people of Iowa). I'm not sure why they couldn't separate these songs so they could be listened to individually, but it's not that big a deal.

The Music Man 1957 Broadway recording is also available, but the 1962 film version is the one I grew up with, so I opted for this particular recording. But Robert Preston was in the stage version, too, so it's probably just as good. (Although the song "My White Knight" from the Broadway show was replaced with "Being In Love" in the movie, if that makes a difference to you.)

The CD was released nearly twenty years ago (I reckon), so the jewel case isn't as sturdy as those of newer releases. No big deal. The liner notes are scant, with a backstory by Meredith Willson (the man who wrote the musical) but no song lyrics. But the CD content is great and the price can't be beat. If you haven't seen the play or the movie, I highly recommend it!
