1 comments about English Dial Clocks.
- An excellent authoritative work one the history and development of English Dial Clocks from a master of the subject - Many phtographs of examples of clocks from rare and exotic to normal everyday clocks. This book really fired my enthusiasm for collecting and understanding what makes clocks tick...

1 comments about Designers of Time.
- An excellent photo essay on this interesting subject. As in all of Cathorine Childers' books on the master jewelers, this one is no disappointment. Interesting bio's of founders and current designers, as well as fascinating history of these designers of time. Highly recommended for reading and coffee table display.

5 comments about Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland: Self-Winding Wristwatches.
- A great book, with almost all the automatic movement ever made. With detailed technical info and great pictures, this book is certainly worth it.
- This is a great book for you Rolex and Omega lovers (as well as other fine Swiss watches). It covers only Swiss wristwatches but it does a nice job of it. Lots of black and white (as well as some color) close ups of faces and movements. There is a table to tell the approximate range of years when specific caliber movements were produced. I'm certainly not an expert but I would recommend this book for those who are getting into the hobby of collecting fine Swiss automatic movement (self-winding) watches.
P.S. Look elsewhere for information on modern quartz or early manual winding watches. If you like bumper and/or full rotor automatic winding wristwatches then this book is for you.
- Well researched, technical details to a useful degree for collectors, list of calibers, good photos.
One of my favourites, be it for research on specific models or to just flick through from time to time.
- This book provides a complete listing of movement caliber & historical information in a very straightforward fashion. It also includes close up photos of some 200 individual watches and also includes a helpful, though outdated, pricing guide. It is an indispensible reference book bound in top-quality heavy duty binding. I found it to be worth every penny I paid.
- Everthing previously written about the book is correct. What is not: the book does not have a price guide, like one reader said. After all, it's a watch movement's book! How can it have a price guide? The book have very good pictures, but 70% of them are in black and white. I didn't rate this book 5 stars, in fact, because it does not have german to english translations in the schemes of watch movements and pictures that have something written in german. Finally, the book is a little bit disorganized, since it does not have an index or different type fonts to "tell" you that you are in another chapter.
Added:
After reading the book, i found the price lists. It's one book's page...

5 comments about Prestigious Watches.
- Glossy pictures, looks more like a picture book, a little bit of history of some companies, absolutely no in depth information, almost no information about movements. I regret that I wasted my money on this 'book'.
- One of the best books to start learning about watchmaking. A great introduction, easy-to-read, well-documented and graphically stunning. Perfect as a coffee table book to keep around or as a gift to those who need to be initiated.
- This is by far the most attractive book on watches that I have read to date. It is somewhat wider than most books so ensure you have a deep bookshelf. The photographs are of the highest quality and the editorial is well written and researched. This book is not a technical manual, it is a collectors book that portrays the most beautiful examples of the watchmaking tradition.
- So-called "historic reviews" is awful. For example - on page 156 we can read: "In 1810, King Louis XVII of France appointed Breguet as Watchmaker to the Royal French Navy". Did you hear about Napoleon I? Sophie Ann Terrisse (editor of the book) no. For editor information - Louis XVI were executed much earlier 1810 and next Louis XVIII claimed as King in 1814. Louis XVII never was as King in fact.
- Still the best watch book edited in the serie of three by this publisher. well documented and spectacular close up of pictures.

5 comments about Wristwatches: A Connoisseur's Guide.
- Accurate and concise history of time keeping, with a brief history of the technical evolution as well as a generical presentation of the main 50 makers and their actual products. Good photos.
- Nothing much to learn from this well illustrated book, at least nothing more than what can be found in "wriswatch annual". For newbies only.
- This is an OK gift book with nice photos of watches, but it fails as a "connoisseurs" guide. There is scant history of the various brands and almost no technical information. No connoisseur would seriously consider a Timex watch, but Timex is presented along with the finest Breitlings, Bulgaris, Breguets et al. In the section on Bulgari, the author describes in detail a watch given by Count Galazzo (sic) Ciano to a friend, but there is no illustration to go along with the description.
A watch collector or connoisseur should not waste his or her time with this lightweight giftbook
- This is a good overview of watch history and availability. Highlighted are 55 of the major collectible watch companies with good photo selections from each. The detailed pages on the companies is good and informative. Not bad for the coffee table, either.
- Hello. The LIBRARY JOURNAL review you have for WRISTWATCHES: A CONNOISSEUR'S GUIDE is botched. You're including review information for some book on jewelry. Please do something about this, pronto. Thanks!

2 comments about Watch Repairing: Cleaning and Adjusting : A Practical Handbook Dealing With the Materials and Tools Used, and the Methods of Repairing, Cleaning, Altering, and adjusti.
- This is a reprint of a book first issued in 1930. It does have some fascination, for instance in the comparison of gas vs. oil lighting for your workspace. For my purposes as a beginner looking for basic methods for mechanical watch cleaning and repair, it was practically useless.
It gives equal time to fusee and Geneva watches and may well be of interest to an experienced person looking for a glimpse into the past, but not reccomended as a "practical handbook."
- Unlike how to books of today, this book is not filled with pictures. However, the written definitions are very clear. I was able to sit down with this book and read a section and then take what I just learned and apply it to my watches. If you're looking for a step by step book, this is not it. But does have a great deal to offer.
