  1. This book is a resume of what is written on the brilliant book of David Landes, Revolution in Time. It has a huge amount of photos, and worths every peny paid.
The book, as mentioned by the reader above, does not cover American Watches history in depth. Even tought, is a very good book.

3 comments about Antique Clocks: 3rd Edition (Official Price Guide to Clocks).
  1. The book reviews American antique clocks only. You cannot tell this from the cover or the write up.

  2. I must of clicked on the wrong book. What good is a price guide to 1985 prices if it gives you nothing more than the price?! That's all you get here. Save your money and put it toward a clock!

  3. If you know nothing about clocks and want to learn more before you seriously invest time and money, this is not a bad reference. Ignore the title (it was published in 1985!) and most probably worthless as a price guide...and unless you are from California and can't read...it only covers "American" made clocks. It's an easy reference and somewhat informative...for beginners.

5 comments about Automatic Wristwatches from Switzerland: Self-Winding Wristwatches.
  1. A great book, with almost all the automatic movement ever made. With detailed technical info and great pictures, this book is certainly worth it.

  2. This is a great book for you Rolex and Omega lovers (as well as other fine Swiss watches). It covers only Swiss wristwatches but it does a nice job of it. Lots of black and white (as well as some color) close ups of faces and movements. There is a table to tell the approximate range of years when specific caliber movements were produced. I'm certainly not an expert but I would recommend this book for those who are getting into the hobby of collecting fine Swiss automatic movement (self-winding) watches.

P.S. Look elsewhere for information on modern quartz or early manual winding watches. If you like bumper and/or full rotor automatic winding wristwatches then this book is for you.

  3. Well researched, technical details to a useful degree for collectors, list of calibers, good photos.
One of my favourites, be it for research on specific models or to just flick through from time to time.

  4. This book provides a complete listing of movement caliber & historical information in a very straightforward fashion. It also includes close up photos of some 200 individual watches and also includes a helpful, though outdated, pricing guide. It is an indispensible reference book bound in top-quality heavy duty binding. I found it to be worth every penny I paid.

  5. Everthing previously written about the book is correct. What is not: the book does not have a price guide, like one reader said. After all, it's a watch movement's book! How can it have a price guide? The book have very good pictures, but 70% of them are in black and white. I didn't rate this book 5 stars, in fact, because it does not have german to english translations in the schemes of watch movements and pictures that have something written in german. Finally, the book is a little bit disorganized, since it does not have an index or different type fonts to "tell" you that you are in another chapter.

    Added:

After reading the book, i found the price lists. It's one book's page...

2 comments about Watch Repairing: Cleaning and Adjusting : A Practical Handbook Dealing With the Materials and Tools Used, and the Methods of Repairing, Cleaning, Altering, and adjusti.
  1. This is a reprint of a book first issued in 1930. It does have some fascination, for instance in the comparison of gas vs. oil lighting for your workspace. For my purposes as a beginner looking for basic methods for mechanical watch cleaning and repair, it was practically useless.

It gives equal time to fusee and Geneva watches and may well be of interest to an experienced person looking for a glimpse into the past, but not reccomended as a "practical handbook."

  2. Unlike how to books of today, this book is not filled with pictures. However, the written definitions are very clear. I was able to sit down with this book and read a section and then take what I just learned and apply it to my watches. If you're looking for a step by step book, this is not it. But does have a great deal to offer.

  3. Great pictures. Pricing out-dated, but gives you a feel for the relative prices and which clocks are truly "rare." Brief histories of the great American clockmakers. A must for any serious clock collector, especially a beginer.
