  1. This is another great watch book. There are pictures of watches from all over the world not only Swiss. Big photo and in color you really get to see what they truly look like. They are all a work of art. A must have.

  2. I found this book to be one of the most informative, easy to understand, loaded with excellent pictures, variety of horological subjects, etc.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves watches

  3. A beautiful book featuring beautiful wrist watches including some from both American and high end Japanese manufacturers.

  4. I'm a woman who has loved watches for over 35 years. This book has beautiful pictures, but, I could not find a single woman's watch. It was disappointing. Did I miss something? I returned it!

  5. I found this book an excellent first book to read about watches and watch collecting. It covered fifty top names, albeit briefly, but clearly and with good background information. The pictures were clear and beautifully reproduced. I can't decide if I will use this book as a coffe table book or as a dog eared, highlighted reference I take with me when watch shopping.

  1. Great photos of mainly expensive swiss and Europe made watches. Many brands of which were unknown to me before reviewing the magazine.

  2. Very nice book on watches, some great pictures and details. I did wonder if it had been proof read as, I found a few errors, or maybe it is in the translation. But still some good facts.
It does contact approx 30 pages of advertisements.

  3. This is my second or third book in this series. That should tell you that I like it. It covers what the writers consider to be important wristwatch companies. I am not sure how they decide who gets in and who is not good enough. There is a brief history of the company and its philosophy, pictures of its most notable watches, and descriptions of the variations, or options available to a certain number of buyers. I read the magazines, and think I am fortunate to be able to buy these annuals. I doubt that I will ever learn enough about watches and clocks. If you also want all you can get, with high quality photographs, then buy each year. We all know the internet has information, much more information than a book can hold, but these annuals have photographs you can examine with a magnifying glass. I keep the books handy for impromptu browsing.

  4. When it comes to vital information about the world's finest wristwatches, this is the annual standard reference guide for serious watch aficionados.

  5. Very goog reference guide, but lack prices. If you need prices, search for other publication.

  1. Great book for watch enhusiast. Although it only takes us up to 1997, so I was dispointed, The pictures are good, the history covers the basics. I would recommend to add to the collection

  2. Pictures are of good quality. A good book to add to the collection, each watch has good description and on the watch movement.
It is a limited market, you have to remember its a book on the vintage watches and not modern Rolex watches.
Saying that I would not be without it, But I am a watch Nut.

  3. A most impressively comprehensive and finely detailed reference that will prove to be of great usefulness and interest to me when handling Rolex watches, and when talking to and advising collectors and enthusiasts.

  4. This book is completely stated sports models and really can help user when buying a vintage Rolex!

  5. This book only has old watches in and not all of them at that. Some details are incorrect.
However it is just a book on Rolex sports watches, but it has nothing new, the most modern watch it has is a 1975 GMT. So if you want to know something about Rolex wathes in the last 33 years, its not alot of good,

  1. Thank you for the swift order. You saved me a great deal of money for my school book.

  2. This book is primarily written for collectors of pocket watches and only gives cursory information regarding wristwatches. Should be titled: Collecting Pocket Watches

  3. The book is well written, and is primarely about watches produced in the USA, and pocket watches at that. There are a lot of illustrations, and describtions of most of the principles of the art of watchmaking.

  4. This book is more or less a repeat of the introduction to the Complete Price Guide to Watches, by the same author. Save yourself time and money by buying the latter work, which is much more informative on watch pricing and contains all the information in this one.

  5. I bought this with a few other books on the same subject. The material is presented well, but I'm still deciding my interest level, so I'll use it for reference more than for current information.

4 comments about Classic Wristwatches 2008/2009: The Price Guide for Vintage Watch Collectors Over 1300 Models! (Classic Wristwatches: A Catalog of Vintage Timepieces & Their Prices).
  1. ...but this is not a guide you would want to use daily. This is an ok book for higher end collector watches, but very limited.

I was hoping it would cover some or much more of the $200, $300 & $400 watches. Example: Only 8 models of Hamilton watches are shown.

I do like pictures: very nice, color photos. Also gives some history on the manufacturers of the watches presented in the book.

Nice coffee table book, but for daily reference you need a "Complete price guide to watches" by Engle/Gilbert/Shugart.

  2. This book covers a very broad selection of watches and is especially strong in the major brands - Omega, Patek, JLC, IWC. Rolex, etc as well as some of the more "working class" timepieces which today are very collectible.

Some of the calibre and associated information on some of the listings are not totally accurate but on balance, this soft cover resource provides a good point of reference to check value and collectability of many classic watches.

  3. Very nice and informative book. Quality is fine and price is fair. I strongly recommend it for watch enthusiasts like me.

  4. I just went over the book, and I was a bit disappointed.
Picture for money is quite interesting, thanks to a lot of images for small bucks, but the goods of the book is just that.

Interesting are the pages with the history of the maisons, that provide some useful hints about not very well known producers.

Organization of the book is quite disappointing, though: the models depicted are put on paper at random, with no age or value order.
As far as I could understand, those are the watches that were estimated by some kind of trader during the year, so no section covers completely the model range of a brand. If you need to evaluate a specific piece, most of the time you have to guess comparing it with similar age-feature watches of the same or other manifacturer.
Some brands aren't even in the book (Breguet? Rado?) while for other you just get 6 models.

The book is useful, anyway: with few dollars it can help you in identifying a particular brand that may catch your imagination, or browse through many hundreds of pictures, to find ideas for particular models, shapes, or features you may like to have in your collection.

If possible get a new copy: I bouth an used one, and the binding glue went bad: pages started to part from the book.

2 comments about Clock Repairing as a Hobby: An Illustrated How-To Guide for the Beginner.
  1. Clock Repairing is a fun, delightful, relaxing hobby that more people should take part in, and this book is a great introduction into the world of clock repair. It helps you get passed all the elaborate gears and levers, and into the fun of it. The diagrams in here are great and really helpful. Pick this up if you are new to the clock world.

  2. This was a Christmas gift for my husband whom is interested in the repair of watches and clocks. He just needed additional information on repairing clocks, and he said this was the perfect book! He was very pleased.

  1. SImple things using the right tools and procedures can allow you to get the satisfaction for the simple repairs. I would suggest doing classes etc or going to a professional for the more advanced types of repairs. The book also allows you to gain an appreciation of actually what makes then tick and tock.

  2. I am amazed that this book (my edition printed in 2006) is an exact copy of a 1971 printing. Mechanical watches of today are readily described in this 35 year old text.

The 1971 dust jacket has hand drawn lettering. The 2006 dust jacket has been cleaned up by computer aided drawing. It was amazing to find out that the author passed away in 1989. He unfortunately lived long enough to see the Japanese demolish the mechanical watch industry.

This book does have a place in today's world...The mechanical Swiss Watch is making a comeback, although limited to those willing to invest in a $400 and up watch. But if you buy a good Swiss mechanical, it can be passed down and repaired by your heirs.. This book will probably still be available, when your heirloom is in need of repair...

  3. This product, though very good, was not what I expected. It is apparently a very early book on watch repair (updated through the years), written by a watch repairman. The book targets persons wanting to begin a watch repair business, so it included the ideal work space, all the tools necessary to begin an ultimately profitable business, all good information but more than I wanted or needed. It is sometimes difficult to read because a few sections are quite technical and include jargon, but I was also able to locate and understand the information I needed for my own home watch repairs.

  4. As a watchmaker by Trade, i bought this out of curiosity. From the techinques of openning a watch case to the description of indiviual watch parts is grossly outdated. New technology in watch production rendered this book obsolete and would only be suited to someone whose advanced in their studies as a watchmaker rather than a novice.

  5. I wanted a book that would help me understand and at the end allow me to repair or clean, oil and adjust a watch. This book didn't do it. It says you can start as a beginner. Wrong. Regardless of what other reviewers say, you will not end up disassembling and reassembling a vintage wristwatch. The material is too old and does not cover how you can do the tasks mentioned in the book with today's technology. You'll wind up falling to sleep.

5 comments about Wristwatch Annual 2008: The Catalog of Producers, Models, and Specifications (Wristwatch Annual).
  1. This has always been a great watch reference book with exceptional pictures but this year the pictures are way too small so there's no detail. Don't know if I'll purchase next year if they continue with the small picture style.

  2. I have read the reviews here and have to disagree. How can anyone give this book just 1 star.
Its a very nice book and has some great quality pictures. It does not have too much content but its not that sort of book, it is a 2008 catalog. The author has done a super job putting it togther.

  3. If you like fine watches then this is a great book. It has a good range from almost all the major manufacturers and includes prices. Highly recommended.

  4. This large book has a wealth of information on many watch types and styles, and primarily showcases a limited array of various manufacurer's offerings. Plenty of photos, and information on many brands, a few of which are very obscure and known to only a few true watch aficionados. Each listing, however, gives only a cursury history of the brand, and only a few of the watches they showcase. Helpful for the beginner, although most watches are financially out of reach for most people. A nice inclusion though is the addition of new brands, and rare watches they offer. Obviously not all manufacturers are included, or should be, and while the lack of certain brands and individual watches is frustrating at times, most people will be quite satisfied to drool over the many pictures and will undoubtedly come away from it with a broader knowledge and appreciation of horology.

  5. Great compliation of wristwatches for those who want to know what's new to the wristwatch world. Great info on the manufacturers and their history.

  1. The pictures are small black and whites, so bad they almost look drawn. The prices are inline with what 'SELLERS' would pay for a watch. The definitive guide to watches. Not very good, but where else are you gonna get this info.

  2. One of the best watch books around, it basically plods along, virtually unchanged, year, after year. Except for price updates, and a new cover every year, this book is getting long in the tooth. My main problem is realistic pricing, which would not serve the authors, primarily Tom Engle, who is a high-end watch dealer. Many items are underpriced, in my opinion, and do not reflect real world pricing.

  3. Use the book often in my work. A great addition. Thanks for the fast shipping.

  4. A good source for information but to refer to the guide as "complete" would be streching it a bit.

  5. I got this for my husband to use in our business. He says it's been very helpful. I got it to update his old one.
