  1. A nice general reference; I like the features of depth offered and relative abundence. I would give this another star if it only had more representative species. Still, highly recommended.

  2. For shell collectors and enthusiasts, this is a great reference guide. The incredible variety of shapes and colors are beautifully displayed in this amazing book. I first saw this book on my local library shelves, and realized I had to add it to my own book collection. Actually, I was also surprised at how inexpensive it was. Many hours will be spent pouring over the photos and information that this book has to offer.

  3. As a begginner in shell collecting I have looked at many shell handbooks and find this one to be the best guide to identifying and classifying the shell in hand. It is comprehensive and descriptive to the degree that if the specific shell isn't listed the descriptions of the class are enough to go on to describe whatever shell I have found. But the great number of shell photos are very helpful and usually show what I am looking for. I like the way the families and classes are represented. There is enough information to inform me and yet, it doesn't boggle me down with a biology dissertation. More than any other quide, this one helps me the most.

  4. This is a great book. Just what I was looking for. I needed a field guide type book on seashells, since I'm a big collector. If you're like me, this is the book for you. Weather you're a beginning collector or serious. It is a good sized book, pretty large, thick book full of many pages of different types of seashells. Each specific seashell photograph is accompanied with detailed information on the size, distribution, depth, and how common or rare. I know it doesn't seem like one, but this is a great big field guide. Don't judge a book by its cover! I was surprised myself. I didn't think it was until I opened it.
In the beginning, it also explains the scientific anatomy of the shells, and how they grow, the organs of the living animal, different classes of shells, etc. It also talks about the history of man's uses of shells in different cultures since early times and how the forms of shells are used in the inspirations of the arts. It is a wonderful book. It really is like a encyclopedia of shells. I just love it!!!

  1. I have just started collecting shells, and this book has been a great source of knowledge about the subject. The pictures are absolutely beautiful, the paper in which they have been printed is very good and the text is mighty clear. This book is likely to be an excellent present even for non-collectors due to its beauty.

  2. I can not say enough about this book. Open to any page and you will see something new or never noticed before. The pictures are amazing and the variety outstanding. This book is a wealth of knowledge about shells on land and in the sea.

  3. This is a spectacular coffee table book for anyone who' s the least bit interested in shells. It is enormous and packed with breathtaking photos in rich color on glossy stock. The text is as fascinating as the pictures.

The book features a wide variety of shells, many I have never seen before. It has full-page close-ups of individual shells and several shell collages. It also shows the shells as living creatures in their natural habitat.

Another section has many examples of shells in art including jewelry and postage stamps. There is a detailed caption for each photo. Many of these describe the life of the creature as well as the characteristics of the shell.

If you can tear yourself away from the pictures, the text is equally impressive. It covers evolution, the animals inside, shell structure and classification. It also includes chapters on shell collecting and shells in human culture.

  4. Treasures of the Sea was another Pleasant surprise from Author Leonard hill, with some assistance by Pete Carmicheal the "World Famous" Shell photographer. Again, these two mens talents bring together this Leonard Hill book that is a must have for any shell collector or enthusiast alike. The book has amazing photography that is interesting to Malacologists and Conchologists everywhere. This book is a class piece of work and is an awesome follow-up to another fabulous book "The World's Most Beautiful Shells- co-authored by Hill and Carmicheal. Mr Hill should be commended for another solid project on shells.
