  1. This is one of those books that cries out to be MORE than it is, unfortunately.

The lithography in the color plates is outstanding and worthy of praise. The (all too) brief facts that accompnay each manufacturer are a nice adjunct to the pictures.

Where the book falls short is it doesn't have ALL current manufacturers mentioned, and that's a real shame. Even some models currently in production by the manufacturers featured are not included.

It's a "nice" book...but it could have SO much more. Still, I enjoyed it and it is a pleasant diversion when you have some time to just kick back.

  1. From the editors of Guns & Ammo Magazine comes an authoritative guide to historic and modern firearms in THE SHOOTER'S GUIDE TO CLASSIC FIREARMS, which offers a 'classic test' series to consider the history, technology and operation of selected world firearms. From performance specs and capabilities to history and design, color photos pair with excellent articles and history.

4 comments about A Study of Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers.
  1. Excellent study of the various models of cartridge conversion revolvers. It's all here S & W, Colt, Remington, and others. Great photos of the guns. Well documented and researched with details of every gun right down to how many were produced and any variations during production. Reccomended to anyone who desires to know more about the early cowboy guns before the 73 Peacemaker came along.

  2. When I opened this book for the first time I thought: "too long an intro. But I was srong anything in it is there for a purpose. It's rare to see such a work. Bravo !

  3. As a historical shooter of percussion and western arms I bought a replica of an 1860 Richards Army conversion and then found an absolute dearth of information about it. Mostly all that could be found were references to this type of weapon but little information. McDowell's book fills a longstanding void about this transitional era in firearms between percussion and cartridge. This is a definitive work with substantial documentation that resolves what is an inherently confusing topic. These types of revolvers are being made now with the growth in Cowboy Action Shooting and shooters are always avidly interested in the history of their weapons. This is a plethora of photographs and diagrams which resolves the sequence of development of these types of arms in such a way that the student of these arms can get a full understanding of their circumstances of development. With this book a great void in firearms history is perfectly filled in.

  4. I own two of the actual revolvers pictured in this book that I acquired from large personal collections, and I eagerly reference my copy every time I acquire one of these rare pieces from the transitional phase of Colt's cartridge revolver development. It is thoroughly researched, and every model is dissected and thoroughly photographed. Not just the guns are featured here, but the leather! There are rare military and civilian holsters pictured here that you may never see in three collector's lifetimes!! N.

3 comments about RUGER AND HIS GUNS: A History of the Man, the Company and Their Firearms.
  1. This book is perfect for anyone interested in the history of Sturm, Ruger and Co. The information is presented in a very organized fashion. I highly recommend this book at twice the price.

  2. From the first Standard Auto, to Flatgate Single Six's, Flattop Blackhawks, Hawkeye's, Bearcat's, Model 77s, Redhawks, you name it, it is all in here. I love this book. It is the best book on Ruger firearms that you can buy.

  3. Gosh, this was a pleasant book to read. The only negative I recall was the lack of detailed information about all of the photographs scattered throughout the book. I admit I was hoping to read a little more about some of the business failures and reasons why some firearms did not go into production. However, we don't need to focus in on the negative when it comes to Mr. Ruger's wonderful life! Other than my desire to want a little more description about the photographs and business dealings, this was an absolutely wonderful book on Mr. Ruger.

  1. The Blue Book of Airguns is a must have for any airgun collector. It has great history of airguns that are very uncommon in the US. I dont always agree with the estimated values but the background, history and pictures of the airguns are great.

  1. we are a firearms distributor in manila and have been on a lookout for a source book with as many guns with the corresponding details as possible. guess i found it right here in this book. it contains every bit you want to know about guns, except for the performance, where you wont obviously get in a book like this. anyway, its a great book overall, but it could have gotten five stars if it had more pages in color. most were in black and white. nevertheless, it has really helped our business a lot

  1. This book is a complete step by step reference for building, tuning, and repairing black powder rifles, pistols, and revolvers. The section on tuning cap and ball revolvers immediately paid for my book. It also has a great historical introduction on the frontier gunsmith, with sections on tools and safety.

  2. The author covers all the important steps and gives a few tips. The problem is the instructions that come with gun kits has better detail.
