  1. This book was rather disappointing compared to the Judd's previous books about hard plastic dolls. It might be a good book for the beginner to carry to doll shows or antique stores, but it has nothing new for the established collector. Hard Plastic Dolls I and II are better buys.

  2. This is a wonderful little pocket guide for all of us who have ever scrambled to try to identify a doll at a show or flea market! Great tips and resources for the beginning collector and a handy reference guide for the veteran doll lover.

  1. I have found "From Worn to Wonderful" an excellent source of restoration information. I had no clue on what to do before I read this book. This book provided helpful hints for the beginner.

  2. This book was excellent for fixing up old dolls found in attics
and at flea markerts. It was not too complicated for basic beginners but the easy to follow steps really made a difference
in the dolls appearance and value. It is not meant to take the
place of a professional doll restoration which takes years of
practice and special materials. It is for using products in every
home that everyone has. GREAT READ FOR EVERYONE !!!!!

  3. This is a very helpful little guide for getting started with restoring your old childhood favorites. Since my old dolls and toys have been stuffed into cardboard boxes for almost 20 years, this informative book showed me where to begin. It's easy to follow with both practical and creative ideas. A wonderful hobby for those who are children at heart!

  4. I found this book to be a total waste of time. A good portion of it is pictures of her dolls, which are not by any means noteworthy examples. The instructions she gives are so rudimentary as to be worthless. There are no good "how-to" photos accompanying the text. But what disturbs me the most is that the instructions she gives for removing green ear can severely damage the face paint on vintage Barbies. All in all, a total waste of time and money.

  5. THIS BOOK IS VERY BASIC. IT DOES NOT GO INTO ANY OF THE INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED TECHNIQUES. THERE IS NOT A LOT OF INDEPTH DETAIL. FOR THE BEGINNER, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK.

5 comments about Collectible American Yo-Yos - 1920S-1970s: Historical Reference & Value Guide.
  1. I agree with most of the criticisms aimed at this book. However, it is the only book of its type. This makes it the best you can get. It is, for better or worse, the best education you can get from the only book thus far on the subject. I would like to have seen more and better pictures, as well as an in depth history, but I have no regrets in buying this book. As for the prices being out of line, check eBay to see what people are actually paying. You will be lucky to find yo-yos as cheap as in the book! This book is, for now, the definitive book on yo-yo collecting.

  3. I agree with most of the other reviews here, not too great. I got this at the same time I got Lucky's Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos and I have to say it is a pale shadow of luckys book. Chriss Cooks book can't have more than 40 or 50 yo-yos listed, in comparison Lucky's Collectors Guide has photos of over 1000 yo-yos, and thousands of prices, extensive history. Heck, its amost a half inch thicker and its 8-1/2x11 inchs Its huge. I think I would have liked this book a lot if I had not seen Lucky's Collectors Guide.

  4. Seems this book has gotten some bad press because it's not as big or text-rich as Lucky's Guide.

    Phooey!

Many of the photos (and it's mainly a photo book) are bigger and clearer here than in Lucky's book...and there are quite a few which aren't in Lucky's book.

If you liked Lucky's book, you'll enjoy this one too. If you're a collector of yo-yos or yo-yo history, you'll need both books.

Neither are as helpful as Bill Alton's CARE & OPERATION OF THE NOBLE DISK (the best yo-yo book on the market), but they have many more pictures.

    *jeep!

  5. This compact 126 page guide to the collectible American Yo-Yo is handy to carry when you look for Yo-Yos. It contains an adequate history of the collectible, and nearly 250 large, full color photos. Photos of YO-Yo displays and packages are provided. The book covers from the 1920's to 1970's. Items are described and values provided. All Yo-Yos are shown in manufacturer sequence, with most major American makers being included. Novice collectors would find it especially useful

  1. Altho I'm not a Space Toy collector, this will be on my shelf just for the quality and quantity of the fantastic vintage graphic images of the toys and their boxes.

For the Space Toy afficianado, this has the best, large scale, clearest photos I've seen. Thee is brief, but concise information on each toy that includes the size, maker, year, country, desirability, & description. There are several pages of trademark logos. It's a real trip down memory lane and should serve as one of the top ranked refrence books out there.

  2. I have to agree with the comments made by the author himself, both " ...informative & visually stimulating ...". If that was what he set out to achieve by writing this excellent book, then he has surpassed it. Superb colour pictures of the type of tin robots & space toys we all played with in our younger days brought the memories flooding back. For collectors of this type of toy, this has to be a classic. Clear photography, excellent description of each toy, rare items and original boxes and a desirability guide. A must for both new & experienced collectors alike !

  3. The authors have done a superb job in presenting a classic piece of collectible reference. The book is filled to the bubble with all the greats and done with taste and care. One of the nice sections is a complete listing of toy manufacturers trademarks. No effort was made to price the robots and space toys, which I'm gratefully thankful for, since any attempt would certainly have dated the work. As a collector this will be one of my future guides as I pursue what has become a rewarding if albeit expensive pastime! Bravo...and my compliments. To all others the least bit interested...get this book!

  4. " Human slavery is wrong, insecure, and demoralising. On mechanical slavery, on the slavery of the machine, the future of the world depends." That profound quote from Oscar Wilde leading off the robot section tells you that this is not simply another stylish, colour- drenched coffee table collector's book, but one which marries brief text and evocative photos to cast its subject in a new light. "This book celebrates the design, novelty and colour of these highly fascinating toys," the authors write, exactly the same elements that readers and collectors find so fascinating.

In 225 pages, they present hundreds of colour photos of rare and iconic robots and space toys, along with brief informative blurbs. A rare feature is a listing of manufacturers' marks, both fascinating and helpful in identifying toys. Another rarity is the many photos of original boxes, along with numerous colour and style variants. Amazon suggests you buy this book along with Blast Off! I'd make the same suggestion. Blast Off! has lots of reading, unusual in a collector's book, while the stunning photography and layout lift this British book well above the ordinary.

2 comments about The Complete Miniature Quilt Book: Over 24 Projects for Quilters and Doll's Enthusiasts.
  1. Decades ago I joined a quilting bee, designing & sewing king-size quilts for auction. When our lives split us apart we wanted smaller ones on which to work by mailing back & forth - enter this charming book. Stunning little quilts ranging from log cabin, hexagon, Somerset star to crazy patchwork with step-by-step instructions, alternative design suggestions & clear, exquisite photos. A must for quilters & miniature enthusiasts................

  2. This book has instructions for 24 quilts with only 4 I would consider making -- and 2 are similar to quilts in other books. I was quite disappointed in the book and do not consider it to be worth the cost.

2 comments about Collecting American-Made Toy Soldiers: Identification and Value Guide.
  1. Second of two large soft cover books by Richard O'Brien, specifically aimed at the identification and fair value of American Made Toy Soldiers. Includes brief history of each manufacturer pre and post WWII styles of soldiers. Top quality materials, mine has traveled thousands of miles in suitcases, back packs and the backseat. Opened and closed hundreds of times, it is still in great shape. Crisp and clear photos of most of the listed items have helped avoid confusion and misidentification.

With on-line auctions setting the pace in the toy soldier collecting world. An identification guide of this quality is a must in establishing a BEGINNING bid, while desirability sets how high the actual cost will go. Hopefully, an update of this book is in work as in my opinion the on-line auctions have driven the price of many of the toys to often double their listed price.

  2. I've been collecting American toy soldiers all of my life, and this is by far the best guide that I've ever found. It works as a good overall history of the subject, as well as, a specific historical guide to the companies and individuals involved. It is also superb as an identification guide and for approximate pricing.
Whether you are into cast metal figures like Maniol, Barclay, or Grey Iron, or the classic Marx, Ideal, MPC, or Lido plastics, this is one great guide. It even covers comic book flats, paper soldiers, cerial premiums, and the original G.I. Joe. You can spend hours just flipping though this hefty book and reminiscing, even if you don't currently collect.

  1. This book is a walk down memory lane for the Baby Boomer generation. I can't tell you the fun I had doing the research! Here presented in color are the dolls that were cherished from 1946-1964, often considered the Golden Age of collectible dolls. If you like vintage dolls and those who loved them, then this is the book for you! A. Glenn Mandeville
