1 comments about Kachina Dolls: The Art of Hopi Carvers.
  1. Cecil Calnimptewa, Ronald Honyouti, Loren Phillips, Dennis Tewa and Wilmer Kaye ... they're all in this book, plus 22 other top Hopi carvers. Need I say more! Author/photographer Teiwes begins by tracing the life, history and religion of the Hopi and brings the reader to the doorstep of 1991 (the publication date). 24 color photos serve as the central focus of the book, but the final 63 pages which profile the 27 carvers is what really "makes" it. My copy is in paperback. I assume the hardback foremat is the same. Pick up a copy; you'll thoroughly enjoy it!!!

  1. I will try to keep it to a few words here but it will be hard. If you love dolls then you MUST get this book and if you like whimsical, creative, one of a kind projects you must get this book. A definite asset to your crochet library. Includes step by step very complete instructions for each doll, Hurry once the word gets out I am positive the supply will run out.

  2. I was very excited when I found out that Noreen Crone-Findlay was going to do an entire book on crocheted dolls. However after buying the book , andgetting a chance to go through it...I must say that I am very disappointed. It's perhaps the most disappointing book I've ever purchased. The dolls in it are very amateur in their presentation. Few of her examples/projects rise to a standard equal to that of someone just learning the craft. Most of the projects seem like an explosion of yarn. Your craft book dollars would be best spent elsewhere.

  3. I love this book. It's absolutely beautiful and magically inspiring. I want to start at the beginning and make every doll in it. Noreen gives plenty of info for beginners and those who like to work from a pattern yet leaves plenty of room for those who want to take her work off in their own direction. If you love dolls and crochet, do not fail to own this book.

  4. What an awesome book. It didn't take much reading before I had to go out and get a hook and some yarn in order to try to co-create with Noreen Crone-Findlay. Although I hadn't held a crochet hook in over 25 years, her clear instructions and dazzling designs kept me motivated. Lest you be overly impressed, I did begin with Chubby Lady Bug on page 109, an adorable little being, and perfect for a beginner, or someone returning to crochet.
I can guarantee that if you like dolls in any of their creative manifestations, or like crochet, you will be held and nurtured by this wonderful book.

2 comments about Contemporary American Doll Artists and Their Dolls.
  1. I felt like I really knew the 25 doll artists in this book after reading their profiles. I enjoyed learning how Jamie Williamson began making polymer clay dolls, where Monica Reo gets her inspiration and why Anna Puchaliski favors making dolls that are a bit on the "dark side." The September 11 chapter was beautifully and sensitively written. Be prepared to shed some tears when reading the profiles on Karen Williams Smith and Kim Jelley in this chapter. This book is a must have for any doll lover.

  2. Kathy Witt knows dolls! Her pedigree in the world of writing about dolls and their artists speaks for itself. This book is a wonderful example of how an interest that might seem narrow can be broadened for the masses. I enjoy dolls, but I've never been a collector. However, I've always enjoyed READING about dolls and their histories, and who designs them. Previously, I paid more attention to antique dolls, but CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN DOLL ARTISTS AND THEIR DOLLS opened a window on what's going on in the doll world today. This book is a beautiful addition to any doll lovers' collection! Excellent job, Ms. Witt.

5 comments about American Character Dolls: Identification & Value Guide.
  1. Judith Izen has written another wonderful book! For collectors of American Character dolls, it's a book that needs to be on your bookshelf. It's well written and researched with great photographs. We can only hope that Ms. Izen will continue to share her love and knowledge of dolls with more books.

  2. A most comprehensive and well-researched book! Having contributed to the Tressy section of the book (look for pics from my collection!), I must say that this guide is a must have for Tressy collectors as well as for those who collect other American character dolls.

  3. You can order an autographed copy directly from Judith by going to: www.americancharacterdolls.com

You cannot buy an autographed copy through Amazon.

  4. Very nice book & lots of information i have been looking for these past few years.

  5. This is a great detailed book featuring many of the beloved American Character dolls! It has helped me tremendously with my doll collection.

  1. If you buy ONE doll price guide book, this is the one to buy.
    EXCELLENT!

  2. I have more than one of Jan Foulke's Blue Books. I find them useful not only for the price guide, but for the full-color photos that can be found on almost every page of the book. And don't think that only the prices are updated in each issue. Ms. Foulke also swaps out most, if not all, of the photos, so each new edition gives you more visual examples to refer to. I recommend this or any of her books.

4 comments about Collector's Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls 1900-1950: Identification and Values (Collector's Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls).
  1. Ursula Mertz has done it again! Her first volume of the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN COMPOSITION DOLLS set the standard for compo doll reference books. Now her Vol. 2 -- all new information and photos -- has been published and it more than lives up to the quality of its now out-of-print predecessor. For anyone who enjoys the composition dolls of the first half century of the 20th Century, this book is a "must buy!"

  2. This is a 'must have' book for the collector of American composition dolls. It is well researched and showcases many smaller companies that produced dolls as beautiful, and desirable, as the larger ,better known manufacturers. The addition of actual advertisements from trade magazines, touting 'uniqueness' and sales potential for particular dolls, is both interesting and education to the serious collector as well as the novice. The histories of the lesser known companies ,no matter how short, are enlightening since many of them I knew nothing about. This volume is as beautifully photographed as the first; Ms. Mertz took no shortcuts on quality. Both volumes I & II are well worth their price.

  3. The photographs in this book are outstanding and very helpful when trying to identify a doll. Ms. Mertz has outdone herself in the information she provides in this book. I especially like the closeup photos of the dolls' heads because it is so helpful when trying to identify unmarked dolls without original clothing. This book is a joy to read, and I have kept it on my chair side table in close reach so that I can enjoy it every time I sit down for a break.

  4. Excellent book-Well organized by years, showing top quality photos of American compo. dolls. Highly recommend!

5 comments about Hopi Kachina Dolls with a Key to Their Identification.
  1. This book is one of the best I've seen on the subject of kachina dolls and their carvers. A great reference as well as a strong introduction to the art. Describes the differences between Hopi and Navajo styles, with high quality photos. Along with my Barton Wright, this book is invaluable as a collecting reference book. The appendix includes a big list of Hopi carvers' names and a page of translated symbols.

  2. This book will be most helpful to you if you have a Hopi kachina and don't know which one it is (there are several hundred different kachinas). The book shows the different styles of masks and dress of the dolls, and also shows the differences in the little details such as mouths, eye shapes, colors the dolls are painted, feathers, and accessories that the dolls carry. The kachinas are listed with their names in English as well as Hopi, and the functions of the kachinas are given as well. The line drawings are very easy to understand, and the photographs are clear. Many of the dolls shown in this book are the older style non-action dolls (sometimes called "belly-ache dolls" because of the way their hands are positioned in front of their stomachs, as if they had belly aches), but there are some nice photos of more contemporary styled dolls too. I highly recommend this book!

  3. This book is a good place to start if you are lookin into collecting katsina's

  4. This is by far the best Kachina book on the market. It was written by Harold S. Colton who spent a lifetime studying the Hopi indian culture. I found this book to provide the most accurate details of the Kachina. If you are pursuing an in-depth study of the Kachina, this book is for you.

  5. For the most part the depictions of the Kachinas in this book are line drawings of heads. That leaves out about 90% of what you may be interested in seeing.

5 comments about Marble Mania.
  1. Marble Mania will prove to be the standard to which other marble related books will be compared to. A thorough, comprehensive view of all aspects of marble collecting. Graphically superior with detail that will be utilized by not only the beginning collector but the advanced collector also. Mr. Block has taken the time, performed the research and compiled this vast amount of information into an enjoyable, eye and mind satisfying beautiful book. Mr. Block is clear in his intentions to continue to be the leader in an area of great challenge, I can't wait for Mr. Block's next marble book. The bar has been raised!

  2. I bought this book for my husband (from Amazon) for Xmas. Not only is the book very beautiful, but he has become an expert in his own right. With a year-2000 interest in things retro, marbles are enjoying a boom. We now have jars of them everywhere, looking great and, according to this great book, appreciating in value as we watch. With the help of the pricing guides we discovered that we already owned some very valuable marbles, and have since acquired more. In fact, the book paid for itself about 10 minutes after we got it, with the discovery of an unrecognized treasure.

  3. Marble Mania has fine photographs of every imaginable marble from pebbles found alongside streams to the Industrial Revolution in Germany & Austria. Here the cutting of agate cubes & polishing them into marbles for export all over the world became a huge cottage industry. You have to see the beauty of all the clay, pottery, crockery, china & porcelain globes. It was fun to read this big book. Found myself chatting at the local recycle shop about the blue canning jars in their windows filled with marbles. Eyeing them eagerly, with a little more knowledge & a few more names.

  4. i loved this book because it gave you funny expample of how to play i also loved it because it gave you marbles that you can play with.
    from,
    caroline

  5. wonderful photos', informative narrative, the new guy can't go wrong. And the speed of shipping can't be matched. Thanks all around.
