1 comments about The Encyclopedia of Regional Dolls of the World.
  1. Presented as an Encyclopedia, this book contains general information and one or several regional dolls from each country. The information is interesting but one would have expected more explanations about the meaning/origin of each dress/doll for the country. Some of the dolls are classified by topic (dancers, religion, brides...) which somewhat meets that expectation. The quality of the dolls is heterogeneous, from the plastic doll for tourists to the wonderfully dressed and hand-crafted ethnic doll. I could find similar dolls to the ones I own, which was really exciting, despite a few typos. In general, this book is quite complete since all kinds of regional dolls and countries are represented. Fewer dolls, with better quality and more analysis, might have been a good choice, like in "World colors: dress and dolls" by Susan Hedricks and Vilma Matchette. But it is a completely subjective point of view.

  1. The book has alot of period houses and interiors to look at. The picture detailing is great but the book lacks alot of instruction. What instruction it has is informative but is inconsistant. I only recommend this if you are very artistic and creative already and can figure out how to create these lovely houses.

1 comments about Raggedy Ann and More : Johnny Gruelle's Dolls and Merchandise.
  1. It's been 80 years since Raggedy Ann and all her playtime pals first became a part of America's childhood experience and popular culture. In Raggedy Ann And More: Johnny Gruelle's Dolls And Merchandise, Raggedy Ann expert Patricia Hall has compiled an exhaustive, authoritative, and accessible catalogue that will prove an essential reference for the collector and dealer in Raggedy Ann dolls and memorabilia with its up-to-date price guide. Raggedy Ann And More is equally recommended to those nostalgic readers who will deeply enjoy the informative and knowledgeable text enhanced throughout with hundreds of photos, many of which are here published for the first time.

  1. This is a great reference book. This is the only book, so far, that I have found all of the limited edition raggedy dolls pictured. The prices are realistic for the secondary market and the book is easy to read. This book and Kim Avery's "The World of Raggedy Ann Collectibles" are the Bibles of my raggedy collecting. I understand that Jan Lindenberger has an updated version of the "Raggedy Ann and Andy Collectibles" being released. Her first book was my first Bible and an excellent handbook which has now become outdated. I look forward to reviewing the latest edition to see if it is equal to the first and to this one. If you purchase this book I know you will enjoy it.

3 comments about Contemporary Hopi Kachina Dolls (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
  1. Like many collectors of Hopi kachina/katsina dolls, I eagerly await the release of another book on the subject. I have several books by Schiffer Publishing in my library and have enjoyed each of them. Auhor Nancy Schiffer (a part of the company?) claims to be an avid collector of katsinam for the past 15 years. Her knowledge of the subject and research are some of the worst I have ever seen. There are at least three dozen ERRORS in this book. Any writer who misspells the names of two of today's MASTER carvers, Cecil Calnimptewa and Ronald Honyouti, should not have a book in print. Only one piece by Ronald is shown, but his brothers' last names are misspelled in several places. Various katsinam are wrongly named and the list of errors goes on and on. There are a number of quality books re: Hopi katsinam, but this is not one of them. Many average to below-average carvers are represented, while excellent carvers are excluded. A PLUS for this book is the number of katsinam which are included. It is the only book which has both front and back photos of every katsina. For an introduction to contemporary katsinam and reliable information, I would certainly NOT recommend this book. My suggestion is that Schiffer Publishing cease publication on this edition, rework it and REISSUE a quality product in a year or two.

  2. The pictures in this book were quite good. I would have liked the captions to match the Kachinas. Some of the errors were so blatant that I find it hard to believe the book was proofed.

  3. the kachina dolls and photography were well done and could hardly be improved upon. however, the commentary is terrible; it is replete with errors; so much so that the reader is misled by unreliable information; this book should be withdrawn from the market until the errors have been corrected.
