- Tom Frey has put together the greatest book on toys I have ever seen. The book is not a price guide. Its a wonderful trip back in time. Back to the days when us kids had imagination. The pictures are outstanding. I have spoken with Tom and find him to be a very good source of information and you can tell from talking to him that he really loves his toys. If you were a child in the 50s to 60s and want a real trip down memory lane, then this is the book for you.
- TOY BOP! This could be THE bible for toy enthusiasts and creators...each page gives reason to why millions flock to fleas and why I personally have chosen my profession. Toy Bop is a what's what map to the never forgotten gold in yer the great mind shaft of memory. And in Toy Bop, the gold never glimmered brighter. From the quirky haphazard classic toys spawned by Marvin Glass to adorable machine guns and one color Marx's, Toy Bop displays its wears like GE at a Worlds Fair long ago. Pick it up, waste away a few hours, and tell Odd-Ogg and King Zor that I sent you.-- Daniel Seifert ---Toy Designer Guy Oddzon/koosh/hasbro
- This is a great addition to any toy lovers library! There are quite a few toys shown here that I have not seen in previous books, and believe me I have a few. I thrilled at nice clean pictures of Video Village, the Talking Casper doll, Major Matt Mason, Johnny and Jane West. Lots of Marx Toys, reminiscent of Pennsylvania and my youth.
A time machine for anyone at or approaching 50!
- Tom Frey is an authority on Toys from the boomer era.I bought his "Remco Movieland Drive-in from him in 1991 from Toy Shop magazine. His photography and commentary is priceless! If you grew up in the late fifties, early sixties and bugged your Mom and Dad for a "Great Garloo" or a "Remco Drive-in"(like I did),then definitely BUY this book!!You'll LOVE IT!!

3 comments about World Colors Dolls & Dresses (World Colors).
- The only book I have ever found about folk dolls only. The pictures are great, the information about dresses is complete. My only wish is to find the same kind of book about more "modern" dolls. This book mostly deals with dolls from museums and does not give many tips about where to find good folk dolls today. Looking forward to reading Volume2!
- Being in the doll business ourselves, and specializing in ethnic dolls, (PattycakeDoll.com) we are always looking to find books with information in this category. This book fits the bill perfectly. Great pictures, large format, lots of countries. Nice feature is they often have photographs of people in their native costumes to compare to the doll's dress.
- I found this while browsing for some world costume books. I make cloth art dolls so was amazed this book got past me - I hadn't heard of it before. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and have passed it around to friends. It's simply stunningly beautiful and has great information besides. I'm glad I got mine at such a great price, now that it's remaindered, but it's kind of too bad, as the authors and publisher did such a great job on it. I like to see good books rewarded - and this is a genuinely good book.

2 comments about On Display: Displaying Your Treasures With Style.
- I really looked forward to buying this book, because I was looking for an interesting, but uncluttered, way of displaying my pottery, vintage jewelry, etc. Unfortunately, though some of the illustrations are interesting, very few of them are truly creative. Most of the ideas I could have come up with on my own. And I was hoping that there would be some kind of "how to" aspect to the book as well, so that if I did see something I liked (i.e. shelves), there might be instructions as to how to create them. Unfortunately, there were not.
Though I'll hang onto this book for occassional inspiration, it wasn't nearly as wonderful as I hoped.
- I found 'On Display' in the local library and was delighted with it. The text is actually relevant to the photos and enlarges on the ideas illustrated without getting technical or arty crafty. In fact, even on its own, the text of the book inspires creativity.
I am surprised that the previous reviewer was so disappointed. Perhaps a better book for her would be one on storage such as 'Organised Living' by Dawna Walter.
The strength of this book was its ability to inspire me to develop my own ideas; such as using a floral cushion on a plain white sofa to inspire a large but simple abstract on the wall using one of the motifs. Then there's the old, pewter bucket holding large dried leaves, arranged as if pages in a book that prompted me to create a similar display with huge leathery leaves and an antique leather container. Surely success is when the reader says, "I could do that!"
The book shows unusual and artistic ways of displaying your personal treasures and making them a charming and sometimes whimsical part of your decor. Even if you are into minimalism, a single possession can make a bold statement against stark white. The reader is helped to see the possibilities in anything: plates, bowls, books, bags, shoes, scarves, jewellery, collectables mixed with modern - even in one place, a display of old pick handles and heads is turned into a fascinating sculpture on a plain wall - right next to the pure lines of a modern chair. This display suited the muted, Spanish-style interior - not a syle eveyone would want, but it showed how it is possible develop a theme - and even mix styles with flair.
I have ordered my own copy of Lesley Dilcock's 'On display' as there is still so much more to explore. It will take me a while to finish with this book.

- This is a fantastic pattern book! Lots of ideas, and things to work with. Adaptable to different sizes and types of dolls. The only caveat is that on a few of the patterns you have to improvise a little, and there is little or no gauge information. I've found that I start out with a pattern, and if it doesn't look like it will fit a doll, I'll rip it out and adjust accordingly. But it's a great reference--good for all-bisques, larger bisque headed dolls, compo, etc.

- I think Jan Foulke is the leading authority on doll collecting. This is a great book for beginners. It gives great advice on what to look for in a quality doll. The dolls condition can be just as important as its rarity etc... This book is not thick, but has great tips and advice. I would recommended any book by Jan Foulke. She also sells dolls on Ebay.
