1. This book is filled with lovely color photos of early Kewpie paperdolls, post cards & other paper products that bear Kewpie pictures. Rather than contenting himself with only the very early products that were overseen by Rose O'Neil, John Axe continues with the production of later Kewpies. The most recent are not included, but Kewpie dolls as recent as 2001 are pictured. This is great for a collector such as myself who cannot afford to buy the early Kewpies, but must be satisfied with later reproductions. All photographs are in full color. A MUST for collectors' of the more modern Kewpies.

2 comments about The Teddy Bear Men 2nd Edition: Theodore Roosevelt & Clifford Berryman.

As an adult collector of teddy bears, I have read many summaries regarding the 1902 Presidential bear hunting trip and the Clifford Berryman cartoon that began America's love with the newly created "teddy bear". Almost every book for adult collectors has some version of this story in its introduction. I found Linda Mullins' The Teddy Bear Men to be a superior and detailed account of the real story. Mullins wisely included the highlights from the November 1902 accounts from The Washington Post, which clearly recounted how and why a bear ended up being tied and presented to President Theodore Roosevelt for him to shoot. Washington Post cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, then portrayed this incident in a cartoon, which may be familiar to many collectors. The cartoon bear that evolved from this initial cartoon became Berryman's artist symbol ("dingbat") and linked the teddy bear (both the Berryman cartoon and the toy versions) to President Roosevelt's political career. This book is a well researched documentation of Clifford Berryman, Theodore Roosevelt, and of the significant contribution they made to the rise of the first teddy bears. It is presented in a reader friendly manner, with a well written text, short chapters, and many photos and drawings on each page. I found this book to be both intelligent and enjoyable.



2. Here it is. Everything you wanted to know about the cartoon that started the teddy bear craze 100 years ago and more. Linda's research is incredible and her writing style is very warm and personal, sort of like teddy bears. The book is also packed with illustrations in both color and black and white. I especially liked reading the history of Berryman, and how the cartoon of Roosevelt saving the bear came to be, about the two cartoons depicting the famous event 100 years ago, and about how Roosevelt did not actually spare the life of the bear tied to a tree, just refused to allow it to be shot. Any arctophile worth his or her salt should have this book in their collection! Bravo on a fine volume, Linda!

1. This is really one of the most unusual Kachina art books out there. Besides the exquisite photography of Gene Balzer, Theda Bassman delves into how the new carvers who adapted to all wood carving feel about their craft and what it means to them to be a carver. One gets a real sense that the artists themselves come alive and in this way, bring their art alive. They demonstrate a trust in talking with Ms. Bassman, who has a long history of working in the Southwest Indian contemporary art world. In this way, this book transcends the typical art book.

1. The production quality of these postcards is [not good], but the subjects make up the difference. The dolls represent a range of ethnicities and mostly seem produced in the 19th and 20th centuries. They share an eerie lifelessness, like simulacrums who could be pinnochio's evil cousins. You'll want to write cheesy scary poetry on these cards and send them to your friends!



2. The cards come 4 to a page. There are 2 boy dolls, 1 Asian doll and 1 black doll in the set. The darlings are dressed to the nines in lavish velvets, organdy (?) and lace. Overall, it's unique and colorful: perfect for a quick valentine or birthday greeting and a very elegant alternative to Hallmark.
   
   The only quibble I have is that mine arrived with a creased front cover and 2 creased cards on the 1st page. It was pretty obvious and I'm disappointed by Amazon's QC.
