  1. This book offers an overview of the concepts of "Art vs. Craft" and "Art Dolls". There are 40 artist interviews with many pictures, unfortunatly they are all black and white which is why I rated it low. There is also an artist's diary of the process of making a prototype doll.

  2. Yes, rated "3" instead of "5" because pictures are all black and white, no color. But to see features of dolls from all these artists, it's just fine.

  1. I have collected dolls for many years, but always shyed away from antique dolls. I don't know much about them and felt I wouldn't know if I was recieving a fair price. This book has helped me see some of the antique dolls I find appealing are not so out of my price range. Although I cannot afford to buy a single doll at $1000.00 I can still find great looking antique dolls from $200-$500. Magazine listings, books, websites, clubs and doll doctors are included and I feel these are references I can trust. This book has sparked a fire in me to aquire some new antique doll for my collection. It was a great start to a learning process.

  1. This book allows you to have a trip to "the world of Teddy Bear". The book is filled with many different styles, design and personalities of teddy bear, a lot of ideas will come out after reading it(as I like to make teddy bear by myself). Although there is no step in making the teddy bears, you will be impressed by the arts of teddy bear! This is really a good encyclopedia for you to have a look on the teddy bear world, just like to have a look on all kinds of people over the world.

  1. What a great resource for Antique and Modern dolls. Julie Collier knows her doll collecting and values and shares them with you. Can't tell you how many times this book has come in handy. Gives advice of dealing with private sellers as well as what to expect out of selling your dolls. You name the year and or the doll and she can break the value down to you in terms anyone could understand. Very informative, and enjoyable....I would read it just for the sake of learning about my dolls and find some of the most sought after ones as well.

2 comments about Insider's Guide to China Doll Collecting: Buying, Selling & Collecting Tips (Insider's Guide Series).
  1. What a wonderful book! Jan Foulke has outdone herself in this guide to china dolls. As a collector who is just tip-toeing into the world of these beautiful dolls, I was delighted to come across this helpful book. Ms. Foulke's book is filled with loads of details on identifying and dating your chinas, as well the most incredible photographs. The close-ups and comparisons of hairstyles of the various periods are invaluable to the new as well as the experienced collector. Having collected antique dolls for over 20 years, I was very familiar with the basics of china doll collecting. This book however, educates the collector in the fine art of collecting the china doll. If you don't absolutely love these dolls when you open the book, you will definitely want at least one for your collection by the time you finish!

  2. Jan Foulke knows her dolls and provides interesting information about chinas. A great variety of chinas are presented, broken down by decades, from 1840's through 1930's. Photos provide side-views of fancy china heads for comparison of hairstyles. Basic information about manufacture, characteristics to look for when collecting and things to watch out for. A section is devoted to frozen charlottes. She also mentions Clear dolls and Ruth Gibbs dolls. Most photos are close-ups of the face/head, not full-view with clothing for those who are looking for costuming ideas. The only complaint is that the book is just too short!! Nice basic beginner book for the new china doll enthusiast.
