  1. This is an appealing publication, and though I can't comment on the accuracy of the fashions, I trust Dover to have done their research. People interested in period fashion or those who want to look right for a party, Dickens-era fair, or theatrical performance can get many ideas. The card stock is sturdy and there are 7 paper dolls -- women, young women, and even a young girl -- with multiple outfits for each one. Plus, the name of the proper character is printed on the tabs of the dresses; however, with all the ruffles from the era, it might be hard to cut out the dresses precisely!

A fun idea is to cut out faces of your friends (or celebrities) from photographs and put them over the dolls' faces, which can make fun table decorations for any "guest of honor" party.

  1. This is a great identification guide if you are interested in finding out more information about your dolls. This book goes into detail about the years each doll was issued and the country or company that made the doll. The book also is a good reference for accessories, books, games and toys, and holiday or birthday items. I have used this book so much for refenence that it is literally falling apart. I have ordered a second one for my reference library. The prices are realistic for the secondary market. I would also highly recommend Joyce Gerardi Rinehart's "Wonderful Raggedy Anns." In addition, I understand that Jan Lindenberger has just released an updated version of her "Raggedy Ann & Andy Collectibles" book. The first edition was a great reference and I look forward to reviewing her updated version as well. I am sure if you purchase this book you will enjoy it and you will want to identify each of your dolls.

  2. A beautiful 232 page reference work featuring more than 1,200 full color, sharp, large photos of every type of Raggedy Ann collectible. Major topics range from Accessories, Banks, Books, Ceramics to Playsets, Dolls, Holidays and Music Boxes. Each photo includes the date, maker and value. There is a brief introduction to the popular collectible. A beautiful reference book you'll refer to often.

  1. Make no mistake
This book is not only for Golliwog lovers.
It is a fascinating history of this controversial black doll played out against the larger forces of racism and social change
The author, Clinton Derricks, has meticulously researched his topic. That he is a Black American only adds to the book's authenticity.

The lavish illustrations and the obvious love and care that have gone into its production make this book an essential for all golliwog collectors.

I came across this book when I was researching the history of the golliwog and I believe it is the only book currently written on this subject

5 comments about Bobbing Head Dolls: 1960-2000.
  1. I just start collecting bobbing head dolls without any knowledge.I wasn't sure where I can learn about.this book helps me a lot.Gives me lots of info etc....I wish this book had a lot more color-photo of dolls.

  2. As a long time BB card collector, my parents stumbled onto a bobbing head, an item I didn't have. Needless to say I have gotten hooked, with my collection now over twenty dolls. I read the large print on the cover, and thought it would be just what I needed, but the book is really about dolls from 1960-1972. The author simply blows off the newer versions as being too manufactured and barely covers them. A better detail history of the newer dolls and more aggressive price guide would have made this book a 5star.

  3. Anybody who collects vintage 1960's Bobbing Heads needs to have this book. Tim Hunter is the foremost authority on Japan made "nodders" from the 60's and has spent decades researching them. This book has become the "bible" for Bobbing Head collectors, combining a history lesson, detailed price guide, and helpful hints for collectors. Whether you are a veteran collector or a beginner, this book is a must!

  4. This book is THE guide to get to help you start your bobblehead collection! It has all the old nodders listed, how tough they are to find, variations, and prices. (...)

  5. Excellent book, well written on a collectible that has received no coverege for too long.Everything you need to know about old bobbing head dolls.

4 comments about Action Figures of the 1980s (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
  1. Action Figures of the 1980s is very well written with alot of detailed information cocerning the toys from the 80s that we all remember and cherish! there are ALOT of colour photos 400+ and they are all very clean and proffesioanl! the idea of a price guide feels somewhat redundant seeing as prices change from day to day and from location to location you may end up paying alot more then what an item is truely worth whith the seller in question thinking that the price he is asking for it is reasonable and refering to an out of date price due to a rerelease or whatever!

All in all it is a good book though it is a shame that there aren't more books in this genre out on the market!

  2. John Marshall is THE toy guru, and his expertise shines through in this informative and entertaining guide. This is bound to take anyone who grew up in the 80s back down memory lane.

  3. This book is certainly good for reference. However, the author obviously thinks very highly of himself and his humour, which is often childish. He is also convinced that he *knows* what is good and what sucks, and if you disagree, it's because you don't know as much as he does. This may be partly because he grew up in the 70's rather than the 80's, and as such views these toys as a collector rather than as a fan. He also occasionally shows ignorance of the subject matter. For instance, he refers to Sectaurs as Warlords of Symbion, rather then Warriors. He is also unaware of the fact there was a Defenders of the Earth cartoon in the 80's, evidenced by his puzzlement at the very existence of such an action figure line. The frequent typographical errors are also irritating.

  4. I bought this book for a friend of mine and it's a great book for anyone into either toys, or the 80's. (My friend happened to be into both). It lists prices in the eighties, and then a price for today's market (which would be 10 years before today as the book is written in the 90's) Great book, great pictures. And I payed a great price. Can't beat any of that.

5 comments about The Robert Tonner Story: Dreams & Dolls.
  1. This book has many, many photos of his early works to the most recent for the year 2000. His life story gives you an insite for this wonderful doll designer. I highly recommend this for any doll collector!

  2. The author has included everything you could possibly want to know about Tonner and his work. Meticulously researched! The photos are fabulous, as well.

  3. As both a doll artist and a collector, I knew I had to have this book detailing the career of one of America's premiere doll artists in recent history. Robert Tonner has brought American doll artistry to new heights. There are so many wonderful illustrations of all of Tonner's dolls from the beginning of his career through 2000. Reading Tonner's story truly makes an artist believe that anything is possible - especially success - with a vision, talent and a lot of hard work! I am truly inspired having read this book and there are few people I would like to meet as much as I would love to meet Mr. Tonner.

  4. This is a beautifully written and researched book which I found both helpful and interesting. As a doll critic, I often find books about doll artists to be very self indulgent, but this book represented an honest and straight forward look at one of America's most incredible and talented doll manufacturers.

  5. Great starting point for all levels of collectors.
