  1. I purchased this book a few years back mainly for the great illustrations of LEGO creations. But recently, I was taking a speech class and decided to do a speech on LEGO history, (because I like to be the odd-ball) and this book came in really handy. In fact, I didn't need any other sources of LEGO information other than what was contained in this book. The book takes the reader back to the very early days of the LEGO company, back when it produced wooden toys and follows the company into the late 80's. The book also discusses, in great detail, the Lego company's philosophy all of which I found very interesting. If you're into LEGO nostalgia, and want to see some great pictures of LEGO's and the Legoland Theme Park, I highly recommend this book.

  2. I checked this book out from my public library. It is one of the best written books I've ever read

  3. I checked this book out from the library for my son who is 5 and LOVES Lego's. Even though the reading content is for older children or adults he loves looking at the pictures, which there are many of, including photo's of the Lego factory! The book also gives the history of the Lego company. Even though it is out of print I am going to have Amazon do an extended search for it as I am sure my son will get years of use from this book.

  4. One thing that has always added strength to the LEGO system is its near perfect backward compatibility. 'The World of LEGO Toys' carries some of this compatibility in that it is clearly written at a certain point of time (late 1980's) and yet much of the information is relevant today. It's a concise and colorful look at the company, its products and their affect of kids of all ages. It looks at the early days of integrating computers and LEGO bricks; offering a nice background for today's much more advance Mindstorms models. The book even touches on the subject of adults building with LEGO which is something that wouldn't really come of age for another decade, when the internet brought together older fans from around the world.

While the book is sometimes a bit too focused on the educational aspects of the LEGO system it is none-the-less a well-written and obviously well-researched work. It stands up today despite the many advances of the products and the little company that makes them. The full color pictures are a delight to look at and represent LEGO bricks in a wide variety of models. There are also a number of 'behind the scenes' photos that give you some sense of how LEGO products are made. I would highly recommend this text to anyone interested in the history of LEGO and how it has brought the system to where it is today.

  1. I love the pictures and the wonderful way the dolls are posed -- some of the shots are good enough that they look like they're alive! Other pictures are a little darker, but overall the photography is good.

The only complaint I have is that the book has some annoying little errors -- like "Gold Rush" is listed as a Skipper outfit! And the misspellings like "bow" for "beau" detract a little from the professional image.

But these errors are relatively minor and overall this is a good book to have to identify some of the more difficult-to-find outfits and accessories!

  2. Money better spent buying Sarah Eames' Barbie Fashion books. This one added nothing and fell short in some respects. Photographs are often poor and close-ups blurry and grainy. Some things had no pictures, just a name and list of items. There are also some errors. And, I realize this is a matter of opinion, but the dolls seemed ackwardly posed in many photos, which is distracting for a reference book. Sorry I couldn't rate it better.

  3. I really loved this book and found it very helpful in pricing accessories as well as the outfits. It also shows pictures of everything that came with the fashion which is very helpful if you want to complete an outfit. Great for the buyer or seller. It's so interesting seeing the tiny and very detailed accessories I had'nt known even existed. I just found it to be a great reference book. If you are buying a vintage piece this book helps you know if you're paying a fair price or maybe getting a great deal.

  4. OK, if you have: the 2 volumes of Sarah Eames and the Ultimate Barbie Book, then you don't need this book. It is nice in a way that fashions are presented on dolls and the dolls are presented by themeselves and described. Also the prices for the individual items are listed (and they are close to ebay prices / and prices I have heard from other collectors). Yet like the other buyer said close ups are blurry and some fashions have no pictures. I didn't find the picture's backgrounds distracting, but that is a matter of opinion. If you have the books listed above don't waste the money this one is worth. I have found several errors, mostly on the names and some acceosries, but nothing really big. I found it to be nice and I am glad I bought it, but if you are tight on money and you just want a good, easy, compact, fast, reference book get the other 3 better, with the money left you can buy some barbies!

  5. If this book wasn't good. it wouldn't go for so much. I was just reading posts on the Barbie club Bulliten board that say most Barbie people do not find Amazon reviews helpful because lots of folk post Amazon reviews of products they know nothing about just to have high posting numbers. Frankly that's just plain stupid. This book goes for so much because hard-core Barbie collectors find it valuable. I lost my copy in a fire and deeply regret that I can't afford to replace it. I am hoping it will somehow find it's way back into print again .

  1. This is an excellent source for Muffy bear collectors of all ages. The pictures and tips provide excellent resources to determine edition, completion, and price status. Ann offers a modest price guide in the back of the book that sets reasonable expectations for today's value of the bears. I would like to have seen documentation of all of the accessories. Most bears have pictures, but there are a few that do not--and many of the accessories and club pieces are not pictured or priced. Overall, a great source of information. Well-written!

  1. 1000 Tin Toys by Teruhisa Kitahara, photographed by Yuko Shimizu. Call this book the mother of all collecting books. It is a vast compendium of photographs of 1,000 tin toys collected by obsessive Japanese master collector Teruhisa Kitahara. A visual feast of full-color photos that gives one pause to consider Kitahara's life work of collecting. Truth be told, an inspiration for artists, designers, photographers, tin toy collectors, and children of any age. Why would anyone want to own this book? For the same reason that anyone would collect over 1000 tin toys- the sheer delight of it.

  3. While the quality of the book is fine, the printed title on the cover is deceptive ("1000 Robots, Spaceships, & Tin Toys"). Robots and spaceships are only a very small fraction of the "1000" pictures.
Apparently, the book was formerly titled, "1000 Tin Toys" which is much more accurate.
