  1. Fabulous! Fabulous! Fabulous! If you love Barbie or love L.A. you will love this book. If you hate L.A. and love Barbie you will love this book. If you hate Barbie and love L.A. you will love this book and if you hate both you will still love this book.

    It's really great.

  2. Barbie loves L.A. is by far the cutest book I have ever seen. I postitvely love it! My favorite picture would have to be Barbie at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Barbie's outfits are so rad and she goes to a bunch of my favorite places in L.A.! I wish some of those outfits were mine!

  3. This book is just TOOOO CUTE! It is so well done from the text to the photographs. I still have my #6 Barbie with many of the clothes featured in the book and the photographs of my favourite hot spots in L.A. The book makes this such a special souvenir (it was a birthday gift)uniting my childhood with the present. Barbie, I'm 2 years older than you and look just as great!!!

  4. A friend had the book and we all loved it. I can't wait to get my own copy. The book is fun, creative, well done and brings back many memories of hours of fun and the joys of youth.

  5. Barbie is looking good in all my favorite LA hot spots. Cant wait to see her in Paris!

5 comments about Betty Doll.
  1. I disagree with the other reviews that say this is not a story for children. My daughter will be four next month. This book is one that we both enjoy:I enjoy reading it and she enjoys listening. She understands this is the story of someones life. The book has made it easier for me to approach the subjects of growing old and death of a loved one. I believe we should never shy away from exposing our children to such beautiful literature, which has serious issues to share. It is great to read a book that all family members can enjoy. Rather than parents having to say, "not that one again."

  2. I like Betty Doll because it is a true story and it has pictures of real people on stands. It is also good because Betty Doll stands out in color because she is the main character and also the people are black with some color for the clothes. This book is about this little girl who makes a doll with her grandmother. The little girl named her Betty Doll. The little girl grew up and had children she gave her little girl Betty Doll. When her little girl was about 10 her great grandmother got cancer and the little girl who grew up and had Betty Doll was really sad. They remembered all there memories about Betty Doll and also how they made her and what they did with her. I recommend that you read Betty Doll because it is a true story and it is also very good

  3. Patricia Polacco has, once again, gone to her family for a story around which to hang her usual marvelous illustrations. "Betty Doll" doesn't disappoint. Polacco opens the book by telling the reader about her mother dying and about packing up her belongings and then finally going through them a year later. In some of the boxes Polacco packed up, she finds her mother's old, handmade cloth doll. Wrapped around it is the letter her mother wrote while dying of cancer.

Now before you decide that this is NOT a book for children, you should know that the book overall has a joyous, shimmering quality. The story concentrates on Betty Doll's travels and adventures, with Polacco deftly portraying Betty Doll in color while all else is in handsome but quiet black-and-white tones. This brings Betty's story to the fore visually, but as far as the story itself goes, she serves as a backdrop for different generations of Polacco's family.

The story is true, and it rings true. A little girl's love of her doll and the happiness she finds while playing with the doll come to the fore, as does the stability of Betty Doll throughout the changes of the little girl's life as she grows up, marries, and so on. This is a fine way to gently ease into discussing the cancer of a family member with any young child, but it is also an absorbing tale in its own right and stands ably on its own, aided by Polacco's usual impeccable illustrations.

  4. Patricia Polacco's story spans many, many years and while my 4 year-old was a little confused about who was who (a character grows from a child to a grandma to deceased,) I loved the story behind the story and reading about Polacco's mother's childhood. This book touched me and I spent the last 5 pages crying. My daughter and I talked about death and lasting love and the book was a great vehicle for this difficult conversation. Polacco is my favorite children's author and I am glad to have discovered this book.

  5. This is a beautiful story about Patricia Polacco's mother and the doll she made after a fire. It is a great example of writing and I use it to teach voice when teaching my writing students.

  1. I truly recommend this book, not merely for finding out your Ideal doll's monetary value, but more as a walk down memory lane. Being 56 years old, I remember growing up with many of Ideal's dolls. I especially enjoyed the brief mention of the Snuggles' doll and rocking horse(which many books on dolls leave out). So, if you are tired of reading dribble..., then snuggle up with this pictorial walk down memory lane.

  2. Fabulous color pictures of all the dolls in the book- tons of dolls you will recognize and some you won't. Also features the manufacture marks you will find on dolls to identify them. Most of the dolls are shown in original outfits- some with original packaging and a small percentage are shown redressed. Complete with price guide.

  3. The majority of the pages in this 350-page book are loaded with color photos and information on the Ideal dolls manufactured from 1907 up through the 1980s. Most dolls are pictured in their original outfits and some photos are packages of the original outfits. Also included are photos of ads for specific dolls. The book starts with a short history of the Ideal Toy Co., while the back of the book gives more information on issue dates, characteristics, and current prices.

This book is a must have for those doll collectors that want to restore a doll to original condition.

  4. Enjoyed this book and also the prompt manner in which it was delivered to me by userbro128. It was a used book and let me tell you it did not look used at all. Highly recommend the seller and the book to any one intrested.

  5. The Collector's Guide to Ideal Dolls ID & Values 2nd ED by Judith Izen is another great book by this author. I have been looking for information on a Miss Revlon doll for years and I opened the box and right on the cover is the information I have been looking for. I am thrilled! Any doll collector or lover would love this book. Thanks Judy for another great job! Very fast shipping and a signed copy, it doesn't get any better than this!

  1. I agree with the reviewer who said this book was a disappointment. The editors should be smacked for including all of those horrid b&w photos. As someone who was looking for help identifying Nancy Ann dolls and could have really used this book, it was a great disappointment because of the photos.

  2. I felt the book was incomplete, it only had two pages of color pictures and the description led me to believe it would have more of a complete listing and photos of the complete line.

  3. Considering how long ago the dolls were produced this is a helpful book for those trying to identify their dolls. It is true that 95% of the pictures are in black & white which makes it much more difficult to recognize but it is better then no picture. Also there are several mistakes in the discriptions of some dolls and wrong accessories on some of the dolls. Lets just hope that a new and improved version (with color photos) will soon be available.

  4. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK ON NANCY ANN DOLLS. IT HAS A LOT OF PICTURES. THE ONLY THING IS THE PICTURES ARE IN BLACK AND WHITE. IT WOULD BE A LOT BETTER IF THE PICTURES WERE IN COLOR. IT WOULD BE EASIER TO FIND THE DOLL YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. WOULD BE GREAT IF SOMEONE WOULD WRITE AND UPDATE THIS BOOK ON NANCY ANNY STORYBOOK DOLLS WITH COLOR PICTURES. SEEMS A SHAME THAT THE TOY COMPANIES CAN'T BRING THESE DOLLS BACK FOR US TO BUY. THE LITTLE GIRLS MIGHT NOT LIKE THEM, BUT I AM SURE US ADULTS WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME NEW NANCY ANN'S. I KNOW I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME MYSELF.

  5. The author (who is now deceased) wrote this book with the information she had collected. Since then, it has been further researched, new facts were collected, new pictures taken, and now Elaine Pardee's "Encyclopedia of Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls" is the result of this research. This book was wonderful when it was published, and I still love it.

  1. Since an Italian writer, he revolves a little more around the Italian part of Barbie (i.e., the fasions, models from Italy, excerts from Italian magazines, etc.) but he does go through a lot of the very famous styles that made Barbie "Barbie" like Enchanted evening, Solo in the Spotlight, Busygal, etc. There is also a 4 page visual on the steps in making a Barbie which I thought was pretty neat. He also shows about 16 of the around the world barbies. And lots of special edition ones too. A very good book; anyone who wants to know about the "special" barbies should get this book

  2. THE BOOK HAD SOLID INFORMATION, WAS SUPPORTED. IT HAD GREAT PICTURES. I ALSO WANTED TO SAY THAT THE BOOK HELP ME LEARN MORE ABOUT BARBIE!

  3. This book is very good,really... I learned how to recognize Barbie head molds by period, learnd about the world's fashion history in the ultimate forty years and became much more a Barbie lover than before I knew this book...

  4. my sister is 9 or 10 or something. its hers. i hope she liked it
