  1. Tom Tierney's Fashions of the Old South paperdolls are pretty good, but not his finest work. There are several dolls, including two women, six children, and two confederate soldiers, and many plates of costumes. Included in the costumes are a riding habit, a house dress, a nightgown, a wedding dress, and a ball gown with Spanish-styled mantilla. While the costumes are historically accurate and very detailed, the color combinations are not always aesthetically pleasing. One of the prettiest dresses doesn't quite fit the doll. And I really didn't like the fact that four of the children are grouped together as one paperdoll. I liked the notes on each costume in the book, and found them very helpful. If you're a collector of antebellum stuff, you need to get these. But if you just want some pretty paperdolls, you might want to get a different book.

  1. This is the most outstanding collection guide I have ever read! The author seems to have put unlimited hours into research to come up with such a thorough history of Marx action figures. The photos are fabulous! I've never seen such a variety of great pictures. This book will inspire many others to become new collectors and relive their childhood with Johnny West! A totally awesome book! Many thanks to the author, Tom Heaton, for finally putting a book like this together for us diehards! Cheri Basham

  2. Tom Heaton's Encyclopedia of Marx Action Figures is an invaluable tool for any Marx collector. It includes more in-depth coverage of Marx's action figures than any other book to date.

  3. Tom helps us reclaim out youth, it is great to be able to pick this book and feel like a kid again. My 8 year daughter and I use the book for a guide as we search through the thrift stores and antique stores for the best of the west toys.

  4. This is a must have book if you are a Marx Action Figure collector or even a fan. I have never seen so many excellent pictures that can really help a collector. Since owning this book I have used it on a daily basis.

  5. Tom Heaton's book is an excellent resource for Marx collectors or those who used to play with Marx toys in their childhood. It is packed with clear and colorful photos of the toys, packaging, accessories, etc...

For many years, Santa left me a Best of the West figure under the tree. Being able to flip through the pages and remember the toys and all the neat stuff they came with is a wonderful walk down memory lane.

Although I still have most of my childhood collection, they are in a terrible state of repair. It is comforting to know there are current versions being made (details in this book).

A must have addition to your library if you collect, or used to collect, Marx Action Figures.

  1. This book consists of mostly catalogue numbers. I bought it with the intention of identifying my childhood doll. Guess what, she wasn't listed. I didn't even see a doll with a similar face pictured. It may have been there, but the pictures are in black and white and are quite small, so it's possible I just couldn't recognize her. The listings are extensive, but certainly not complete.

  2. i just had to write after reviewing the last review. This book is good - there are many, many large pics with dolls CLEARLY visible. full page pics & 4"x3", 3"x2", 5"x4" pics & on & on. On top of that there are catolog pics with many dolls. This is the nature of books on collectible books. Authurs don't wait till every last rare & unfound item is located & photographed before they add to the pool of info by publishing! we wouldn't get anywhere with history, collecting etc. if we did that. Just to let you know I am selling my edition on this site.

  1. If you are looking for inspriation, this is a wonderful book. There are many full page photos, all in color, of some of the finest miniatures ever produced. The chapters start with the house itself, then examines each major room found in most houses. This is a must-have coffee table book for all miniaturists.

  2. This book is filled with gorgeous photos of exquisite dollhouse rooms. However, I would hardly call it a sourcebook, since it doesn't mention the sources for any of the items or materials. Had it contained directions for making the projects, and/or information on where to buy them, I would have loved it. Instead, I'll use the photos for inspiration -- but certainly not as a sourcebook, since no sources are mentioned.

1 comments about A Guide to Hopi Katsina Dolls.
  1. If you have an interest in Hopi katsina dolls, this is the right book at a price everyone can afford. Having been in contact with the author several months prior to the book's publication, it was eagerly anticipated. The finished product does not disappoint. As a collector, judge at several major juried shows and owner of a Native American Trading Company, Kent McManis knows his stuff! I have only one complaint ... I wish the book were at least twice it's size. At 56 pages, I hope the author will consider another book on the subject as he had with Zuni fetishes. This is the first book I have discovered which traces the katsina cycle and includes the corresponding doll on the page where it is discussed. This aspect alone makes the book a "keeper". Robin Stancliff is to be commended for 70 beautiful photographs of both contemporary / action pieces and historic / traditional katsinam as well. If you have never seen the work of modern masters like Brian and Ronald Honyouti, Cecil Calnimptewa, Ros George, Loren Phillips and Dennis Tewa ... add this book to your library. Thank you, Mr McManis, for sharing such a valuable resource with your readers.
