1 comments about The Gibson Flying V.
- I just received this book in the mail yesterday and I love it.From design beginnings to a complete model listing with production dates and factories to headstock designs, it's all in here.Theres even a section on the cases! My first lasting impression from the Flying V was as an 8 year old kid in '65 watching "Shindig" and The Kinks came on.They played "Tired Of Waiting" and there was Dave Davies with his Korina V,playing it with his arm in the fork of the body.Well, this book mentions not only when and where Dave bought his V but how much he paid for it(you won't believe it).I've been a V fan ever since from Andy Powell to the Schenker Brothers to Dave Meniketti(the first Yesterday and Today album)and Albert King and beyond.I wish the color section was a bit longer but everything else about this book is outstanding.Great detail about the Hendrix "Flying Angels" as he called them with photos of Jimi in action as well. The "Flying V Wanna-Bees" section is great also with coverage on Epiphone,Dean,Hamer and Ibanez models. This book is awesome and will give me hours of enjoyment. Now if I could just find that used Epi '67 style I've been looking for.

3 comments about Mask Arts of Mexico.
- I found it revealing to see so many and varied kinds of masks all on the pages of one book. It alowed me to compare the masks with others from I have seen around the world. I am surprized at the simalarities.
- I'm not sure why the other reviewer left only three stars (after praising the book). Anyhow, Ruth Lechuga's book will compliment any book on the genre. It is a superb overview of masks you will find from the various cultures within Mexico. The pictures are nice and crisp with excellent detail (nice photography).
- Such a tremendous endevor could only be undertaken by Lechuga (Ms Lettuce), Sayer, and Lavender. I mean "Wow"! This book takes the mindbending and esoteric subject masks and extracts information on levels unseen in either science or the arts. Reading the book changed myself and my wife inexplicably.

5 comments about Heat Waves (Sexy City Nights) (Blaze, 12).
- This was the second Blaze I've read and it certainly looks like the series is holding it's own. Janelle Denison's writing is tight, she's drawn up two great characters with hot action, and I will say, yes, the limo scene was hot!
I would like to see a novel on the other two lovers in the book though, I bet it'd be just as hot. But Ian and Erica, wow. Her treatment of Erica's past was handled differently than I expected, which made for better reading. I couldn't put this book down!
- favorite scene with erica-
the end where she's pouring out her feelings over the air to ian and her listeners.favorite scene with ian- gayle telling ian to go for it. favorite scene with erica and ian together- the fight they have about ian buying the company.
- Radio personality Erica McCree really likes sex. Talking about sex, that is . . .
Ian Carlisle has already seduced Erica's imagination. Now he's trying for the rest of her . . . Erica knows firsthand that you can hide a lot behind a microphone. Although she's earned a reputation for discussing every aspect of sex on her show, she's never had to back it up . . . until a sexy mystery caller proves to be even more irresistible in person. Their on-the-air chemistry sizzles and they heat up the airwaves, debating any and all provocative issues possible. As the ratings soar, so does the sexual tension. But what will Ian do when he discovers Erica's not the sex expert she professes to be?
- This is one of my top 5 favorite romances of all time! It had just enough depth mixed in with all the hot sexy scenes. It was fun and playful, and I really loved how Ian understood her. Don't we all wish we had a guy that really understood us? Sexy, smart man and fun witty woman! Great job Janelle Denison!
- Heat Waves by Janelle Denison
Harlequin Blaze # 12 - October 2001
Sexy City Nights # 3
Ian lost his fiancée tragically eight years ago, and ever since has buried himself in his work. For awhile now he's been listening to a late night radio talk show, Heat Waves, and has been totally captivated by the sexy voice of the DJ and her provocative topics. Erica's fear of becoming dependant on abusive men, just like her mother and sister, prompted her to run across the nation from California to Chicago. After three hard years, she's finally starting to make something of herself, and all without a man's domineering influence. When Ian starts calling in to her radio talk show, Erica finds herself sweating in the radio booth, and not just because the A/C is broken. Their nightly on-air debates jack up the ratings. When Ian asks Erica out on a real date on-air, she's forced by her listeners to agree. The chemistry is even stronger in person than over the telephone, so the station prompts them to go on a series of dates following a recent magazine article of erotic photos taken from various public places around the city, and then share the dates with Erica's listeners. The heat cranks up even more!
This was an exceptional read! Ian and Erica both share a scarred childhood and a lonely climb up the career ladder. The love scenes are very hot and extremely well written, esp. the scene in the limo. From the beginning, Ms. Denison brings emotional life to both Ian and Erica. Their story is both passionate and endearing. A definite keeper! And to me - a five star rating all the way!

1 comments about "Hot stuff!": Firefighting collectibles : an illustrated reference and buyers guide.
- I recently started collecting antique firefighting equipment which goes along with my career as a firefighter. As a beginner it is difficult to get an idea of how much these collectibles are worth. I was recently in an antique mall in Nebraska when I ran across Andrew Gurka's book which I am currently writing this review on. As I was browsing the pages of his book I realized I had just looked at several items which were very similar to some pictures in the book and I also noticed that the prices were very reasonable compared to the suggested values in the book. Needless to say, I purchased the items and the book which I refer to every time I search for a new item. It is filled with a variety of items from A-Z and lists suggested values for the items which you can use as a comparison for the items you are interested in. The prices shown in the book are from 1996 so you should keep that in mind when you are looking at collectibles. This is definately the book for the beginning collector.

5 comments about Harley-Davidson Panheads, 1948-1965/M418.
- This is a Clymer maintenace book for Harley Panheads. It is a very good book on care and feeding of panheads, but the Amazon description makes it look like the history of pans. One good good thing is that there is a section of the book which describes the proper paint and features for particular year pans. Useful for restores.
- If you own an original, or if you're building a 1948-1965 Tedd Cycle (V-Twin) Replica, you'll need every piece of written material you can get your hands on. This service manual covers areas that our manual does not (i.e., Linkert carburetors, transmissions, forks, brakes, "mousetraps" and 1965 Electra-Glides), and more in depth maintenance procedures than the OEM 1959-69 Service Manual.
- Excellent!! A must have book for anyone owning a panhead.
- Solid manual , most detailed and precise one available, very good
for all kind of day to day maintenance as well as for complete rebuild.
Easy to use needs some basic technical understanding but you don't
need to be a professional.
- I needed a service manual for a restoration project. The book helped with finding out how certain components were supposed to be installed. Also adjustments and service procedures such as replacing fork oil, adjusting brake shoes, etc... There were a few things I needed that weren't included, but overall very helpful in my project. It would have been more helpful if I were rebuilding the transmission and/or engine instead of simply painting the frame and reassembling the bike. It did give information about inspecting components and determining damage or need for adjustments. I thought this book was a good value for me.

5 comments about American Junk.
- American Junk is not a how-to book as its subtitle suggests. Far more specific advice about hunting and haggling is available in flea market directories, and there really is no rescue or transformation involved: items acquired move directly to the table top, shelf, desk, floor, wherever. This is a celebration of cheap old stuff that others might ignore or take pains to avoid, an annointment of its value by someone of influence (the author is a vice president at Ralph Lauren, I believe). It's a quasi aesthetic, with loving photographs of the items in assembled in haphazard tableaus. It is of an innocent age, published before e-bay seized collectibles from the trash, before absolutely everybody got into flea market hunt, before Antiques Roadshow--and that was less than 10 years ago! The author does not explain to a doubter's satisfaction how one lives and cleans with so much stuff. Not all of it is really junk, of course--a vintage set of Zane Grey novels, some folk art carving, old textiles are not what I'd call junk. Dirty old Tupperware or small harvest gold appliances that no longer work are what I call junk and they are not to be found in this book. Ah, well; it is fun to give or receive, but take the author's approach and try to get it cheap.
- This book was great on pictures--pictures that showed the "after" of transforming junk. The book, though, lack information on exactly to transfer that junk. It did not get down to the "down and dirty." I have seen better information given on the television show, Decorating Cents, on HGTV.
If you like pictures and use them in your transformation, this is the book for you. If you want detailed instructions, there are other well-informative books that can do a better job.
- Colorful picture book boasts fine loving photographs of junk collected in American junk shops by the author, a self confessed junk junkie. The minimal text is sometimes awkward, the author is a more accomplished photographer than she is a writer, and the hundreds of photos are brilliant eye-catching motifs of both, truly collectible antiques and other people's garbage, like amateur paint-by-numbers paintings of dogs. Although the author pays very little for her vast array of objects; $20.00 seems to be the average price, she seems to purchase a home every time she runs out of space to display her treasures, and her constant references to places like "the summer home in Millenton" become a bit daunting.
- This book was the first book of a "trilogy" (as Mary calls them) regarding "JUNK COLLECTING". The author began her reasearch for this book in 1991, and so she was one of the very first authors to write a book on (what later became) "flea market style". So in a way, she was a pioneer in this field when it comes to writing books about the now more famous "flea market style".
This book is filled with TONS of photos of junk stores, flea markets, antique shops, and of course JUNK! Each Chapter focuses on a special "junker/collector of junk" and the photos show how the "collectibles" were used in their homes.
The way in which the book's collectors display their (often strange) junk items, may not appeal to everybody, but still...I really enjoyed seeing what all these collectors' homes looked like inside.
Also, within each chapter, the author categorizes her junk photos by rooms, and then by types (for example: GOLD STUFF, ANIMAL STUFF, etc.).
Once again, this book may not appeal to everybody, but I really appreciated all the photos of collectors' homes, because I felt like a voyeur into their lives.
- If you're a garage sale junkie, love thrift stores, or just check out junk for the fun of it, this book may be of interest to you.
While I think the author has too much time on her hands, and spends way too much money, looking at photos of her junk was interesting.
I'm facinated with the 'things' that Americans use, discard, and reuse, and this book will stay on my bookshelf!

2 comments about Ancient Coin Collecting VI: Non-Classical Cultures.
- I have bought and read almost all of the books in this series and definitely this is the one that satisfied me the least. In trying to squeeze too many cultures living in too broad of a time frame in just one regular sized book, the reader is just confused on the relation between the choices of cultures displayed. Most of the individual sections are just too short to show the coinage and much less the history of these peoples. One should approach this book as a long, long magazine article that presents some non classical cultures and just that. It is not even a book, as the others in the series are, that entices you to look deeper into the bibliography and that at least gives you the 'big picture'. This book only succeeds in confusing and making the coinage of those already almost unknown cultures a little bit more obscure.
- As the author states, this is not meant to be a comprehensive volume. The field of ancient coins from non-classical cultures is so wide, that I think it is wonderful that someone took the time to assemble an overview that helps the beginner to start recognizing types, and then points them in the right direction. This is especially useful in a field where references for very narrow segment of the coinage are hard to find, and most often very expensive. I myself have invested in a book or two that sounded as if it would carry my field of interest--only to leave me out in the cold, with a very empty wallet!
I only wish that Wayne Sayles could continue this series to cover coinage from India, Ceylon/Sri Lanka, and Asia as well. An excellent book for those new to the field, or looking to expand their ancient coin collecting interests outside the Classical World.

4 comments about Collecting Baseball Memorabilia: A Handbook.
- Since collecting baseball cards many years ago I have always been an admirer of Baseball memorabilia collections. I never started on because it always seemed too difficult. This book makes it easy. From the aficionado to the novice, from the young to the old, this book encompasses all aspects for starting, adding to, or preserving a baseball collection. Amazing insight into the collecting world it gives great advice and tips that are so valuable to a new or even seasoned collector. This book is the "Ball Four" for collectors as it gives an insiders view from someone did it. It has interesting comments and synopsis of Hall of Famers and baseball park and team information. Concise and easy to read with great photos and a foreword by the "Duke of Flatbush",my hero. A must read for anyone into collecting or who enjoys baseball memories.
- After 5 years of struggling collecting baseball memorabilia, I've finally found the magna carta for this fascinating hobby. Attempting to collect the key signatures for this hobby is the ultimate goal. Collecting Baseball Memorabilia A Handbook makes it easy, enjoyable and is a great investment. Lastly, since I've purchased this book, I've added 5 Hall of Famers to my collection without the stress because of the knowldedge found in this book.
- I received this book as a gift and was very impressed with the suggestions and the history it gave. I have since begun creating my own Baseball Memorabilia Room and I have even gotten a few Hall of Famer autographs. I find this book extremely helpful for any collectors, experienced or new to the hobby. I think this book is fantastic and it is the "BIBLE" of any collecting manual. With the upcoming baseball season, it really makes a great read especially if you're interested in starting a memorabilia room. The forward to the book is written by one of my all time favorites, Duke Snider -- very impressive! Also, I love the pictures that are included! I highly recommend this book!
- This book is great for anybody that has an interest in collecting baseball memorablia. Mr. Zachofsky has unique suggestions for collecting autographs and how to display them.
