  1. Beautiful. A clear and concise readable guidline. There were a lot of wonderful pictures and all the information was very clear and understandable. A very valuable source for anyone who is thinking of buying an Oriental Rug.

  2. Illustrations and photographs were breathtaking. Price comparisons were helpful, but very little content on rug parameters and significance with regard to final results and quality.

2 comments about Candlewick: The Crystal Line (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
  1. Candlewick, one of the most popular lines of glass produces by the Imperial Glass Corporation of Bellaire, Ohio, was introduced in 1936 and manufactured until the company's closing in 1984. Today this pattern, made in crystal and many lovely colors, attracts avid collectors of fine glassware. In this beautifully photographed and carefully researched book, nearly every item in the crystal line is shown and discussed. The authors have used Imperial's factory records, catalogs, and price lists to assemble extensive background information on these exclusively crystal Candlewick pieces. Organized in easy-to-use categories, the book covers place settings, serving pieces, sets, and miscellaneous items such as ashtrays, candle holders, compotes, and vases. To further help with identification, undocumented pieces, reproductions, and similarities are shown as well. Measurements are all of Candlewick's stem and tumbler lines are included, as well as many new facts not published before. Values are included both in the captions and in an overall price guide organized by mold number. This book is an essential reference for Candlewick collectors and all who enjoy beautiful glass.

  2. This book steps up to the next level from those worthy guides published in earlier decades by Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka. Full color illustrations, beautifully executed, and a complete round up of the production line. If you are newly interested or a serious veteran collector, you'll find this volume an indispensable reference source. The valuation prices do seem a little high and perhaps ought to be regarded best for insurance purposes. Normal auction and most shop prices for commonly found items will be less than those presented here. However, as happened with Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka's books, the piece costs may soon approach those shown in this book, so maybe the authors are only thinking a little ahead of the curve. Highly recommended for the reference shelf.

  1. I JUST received my copy of this book, and I am ecstatic about getting started! The lush, gorgeous photography is so inspiring and really taps into the luxe trend that's so popular these days (think Brocade Home, Hollywood Regency, etc.). With a nice variety of projects, you're sure to find something that inspires you, too!

  2. This book is okay, but not great. The pillows on the cover are by far the most elegant things in the book. I was very disappointed that the afghan on the cover was not in the book. The other projects are okay - lampshade, slippers, hanger covers, and several pillows.

2 comments about Immortal Wife.
  1. I find reading Irving Stone very informative. I get my romance and my history all rapped up into one book. Immortal Wife has been my favorite nov el since I was a young girl. My husband just recently purchased the book for me, and I reread it. I loved it the second time too!!

  2. I really enjoy Irving Stone's novels. He writes factually, and very humanistically. You feel like you are right there with the characters and experiencing everything that they are going through. Immortal Wife has been my favorite book since I was a teenager. Jessie Benton Fremont was a great supporter of her husband. Whether it be his political aspirations, his travels through California, or any trouble that he got into. A great book if you enjoy romance, history and the flavor of the Civil War era. John C. Fremont was a great explorer, and he and his wife were very much against slavery, and started the civil war talk on slavery even before President Lincoln did! This is a must read.

  1. Ms Martini, an avid and well known collector has tried to give us a book which is usable and friendly in the amount of color photos - however, there is a paucity of written information and this puts the reader at a loss for learning, further education and good comparisons of writing instruments. This is not a true learning tool but a good shopping guide. The publisher has turned out better books in varied areas so should try to provide a more thorough text in the future - Ms Martini has the skills, knowledge and collection she needs assistance in translation and more word space.

2 comments about Collecting Photography.
  1. I found this brilliant book during a research of reading materials for my university's "Art and technology" class. It is not only a good resource for the photo collecting industry, but also a good read for those who are interested in exploring how people's perceived value towards an image is affected.

  2. Content wise, the book is broken roughly into two halves. The first half of the book is a discussion on collecting photographs, how to build a collection, thoughts on value of photographs and a discussion of collecting trends and strategies. The discussion is pragmatic and the author shares good insights to anyone looking to become a collector no-matter what their budget. The reader will come away well informed about what photography collection is all about and what to look for in selecting a photograph. This section is illustrated throughout with numerous examples of collected photographs, most of which are from the 20th century. These cover many different genres with some of them being famous whilst others are more obscure. You can spend a long time just browsing at these photos and getting inspiration from them.

The second half of the book is text only and it contains a series of appendices including: a chronology of photographic history, a glossary of photographic terms and techniques (detailing the many numerous chemical processes that have been used in photographic history), a list of famous photographers and a list of places to buy photos internationally. All these act as valuable references.

This book would be appreciated by anyone who has an interest in photography as an art, a collectable, or just something beautiful to look at. Overall, I found this really enjoyable to read as well as educational and it has inspired me to buy the odd photograph on-line.

  1. Lots of pictures (wish more were in colour, but understandable as to why they're not! The cost would be prohibitive) and information on Victorian jewellery. Recommended to anyone who is interested in that time period or just jewellery in general.
