5 comments about The Official Overstreet Identification and Price Guide to Indian Arrowheads 10th Edition (Official Overstreet Indian Arrowhead Identification and Price Guide).
  1. Overstreet 10th Edition is one of the best I have ever seen. With so many artifact buffs in the family, it was a perfect choice to give.

  2. Outstanding book for those (like me) who do not authenticate points but want to learn about the various types. Includes informative articles on the archaeology of certain points. Lots of beautiful color panels of points arranged by age, in addition to the B&W photos in the identification pages.

  3. 10th edition is like the last 9 editions. But it does have an array of every type variant, albeit many, many variants that really are subjective at best. But as many collectors know. the book has ridiculous price estimates. And as a long time collector/dealer my biggest beef about many of the editions, and I can personally 100% say/witnessed that many of the points are not authentic and only make it into the book to increase their "provenance" and individual value. But that said, the book is on type variations for you and not whether the specimens are actually authentic or not. So its really a catch 22. Many people have made it a popular arrowhead book, unfortunately are the same people that think they have a dozen authentic Clovis points(a rare Paleo, high valued arrowhead) they bought at their local flea market.

  4. Year after year these books are published with the same poor quality binding and paper. Even more disappointing is the same pictures and descriptions are reprinted in each volume. It appears that a variant point or two are added to "justify" a new printing. Don't waste your money. It's 98 percent old and 2 percent "new".

  5. A new update from the 7th, 8th, and 9th Editions about Native North American Points which I have in my library. By having the most recent edition (the 10th) you can compare how items have increased in value.
A host of new material, including new points, geographic area renaming, etc.
A must for the beginning and advanced collector.

5 comments about Book Finds, 3rd Edition: How to Find, Buy, and Sell Used and Rare Books.
  1. I have enjoyed this work and have indeed found parts of it to be quite useful. I have been collecting, buying, selling and trading books for quite a number of years now, and did indeed pick up some good information and hints from this particular book. It does have it's flaws though. The first, and most major, is that it simply does not address the internet as it should. So much of the information found in this book is simply outdated due to that fact. Now granted, once you have the actual book in hand, then this work becomes more useful. But finding the book is a whole different ball game than it was just a few years ago. The second problem with the book is that we all simply do not live on the East Coast of the United States and specifically, New York City. Pity, I know, but that is just a fact. Third, the author can come across as being just a bit stuffy at times, which, at best, is a bit annoying.

The negative being said, this is quite a good work to get yourself started. The author does give some great information as to the anatomy of a book, what to look for, what to avoid when purchasing or selling. This is valuable information. The chapters alone that discuss the various conditions of books and what it does to their price is probably worth the price of the book alone.

Overall, I do recommend this one, but with some reservations. There are a lot of resources out there now, and the reader, collector, seller needs to be aware of them all. This is not an easy business, and is probably not as easy as the author would make it seem.

  2. This book is the best one that I have found so far for a new collector. I ordered many of the books on Amazon about book collecting recently. Although I haven't read all of them yet, so far this book is the most helpful. It is not dry and still has a wealth of information. This is important to me as I am easily bored. Just in the first chapter I learned many terms used to describe the different parts of a book and some of the history of books. I am really enjoying this book and I hope you try it too!

  3. Excellent book for either the new seller or those already doing so. Information included is useful to help become an even better seller.

  4. The author loves his work and shares that love and knowledge in an immediately understandable way.

  5. Without more extensive coverage of the internet marketplace, this book can only be considered out-of-date. For the most part, the kind of selling and trading presented here no longer exists as a profitable endeavor.

  1. Very good book - informative and interesting - provides useful information - I reccomend it.

  2. This is a great book that I recommend. I purchased the book for the guide but it provided so much more. I have been selling on eBay part time but was always in need of things to sell - NO MORE. Thanks to this book, my husband and I went to our first storage shed auction (recommended by the authors) and we purchased one full of great things. Inside the shed we purchased are some great antiques, some very nice china, some English porcelain figurines, tools but the best was a jewelry box. The jewelry box had 2 14kt gold necklaces and a 14kt gold ring with a beautiful ruby. It also was filled with tons of very nice costume jewelry! We are going to make a ton of money off this one purchase - thank you Daren and Nancy for this wonderful book - I Bought it - I'm selling it - and I am MAKING MONEY -- YA

  3. My husband and I have been selling on ebay for about three years now, and we're always looking for new information to help improve our business. This book gave us a lot of great ideas which we put into action the first week after reading. It's an easy book to read and understand, and we both couldn't put it down until we were finished reading. If you're not into ebay, it also gives great advise on other avenues for selling your goods. Buy this book, you'll be pleased!

  4. It is a practical book. Useful tips. If the pictures in color would be better.

  5. Reviewed by Josef F. Buenker for Reader Views (2/08)

I don't know if I'll actually ever do it, but this book made me want to buy things in order to sell them on eBay. Daren and Nancy Baughman, the authors, are in the auction, resale and eBay business. Nancy's (she seems to be the primary author) interest and enthusiasm for her business clearly shows.

Although in certain parts the book had some spelling and grammatical errors, the author/editor's apparent reliance on spellcheck does not detract from the book. "Buy It, Sell It, Make Money" does a nice job of explaining the business of buying and selling "luxury" goods - the term "luxury" being determined by the reader's own lifestyle. Whether one is interested in trading up an item he or she already owns by selling it and buying a better model or one wants to acquire something new, this book could be of great assistance in the process.

After a general explanation of the best venues to acquire and sell various types of items (buying and selling furniture is somewhat different than dealing in modern art), the authors give the reader a very handy guide to the best brand names in a number of common "luxury" item categories, ranging from art to clothing to jewelry to toys.

This book was an interesting read. Anyone who has ever had aspirations of being in the resale or retail business will probably find "Buy It, Sell It, Make Money" interesting.

  1. The Official U.S Mint 59 State Quarters Collection was just what I wanted. It was a Christmas gift for my grandson. I decided it would be an educational tool so he could learn history and also an encouragement for him to save money.

  2. For the price, this coin folder is sturdy and my child is able to insert coins without problems

  3. This folder was much better than the other unit I ordered. Should have ordered two of these. Was very satisfied with this as a gift to a young person.

  4. I RECIEVED THE ITEMS THEY WERE JUST WHAT I EXPECTED FOR THE GRANDKIDS TO START THEIR COLLECTIONS

  5. This folder contains holders for both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, so there is no need for two books. I like that it is the official U.S. Mint book. It is well made.

5 comments about The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Personal Workbook.
  1. This workbook is basically an extension of the author's 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens'.

As it stands, it doesn't offer much new or exciting material.

From my personal experience, working with a workbook (based on Stephen Covey's main book & workbook in my case), coupled with the use of a personal journal, is often an uncharted journey into greater self-discovery. Having said that, I must say that this workbook is well-crafted by Sean Covey for use by teen readers.

Through the interactive exercises, worksheets & profiles, teen readers will find the workout experiences very useful in their understanding - & application - of proven time-tested tools for enhancing personal effectiveness.

Numerous field research reports over the years have consistently shown that the differential between successful teens & struggling teens lies in their habitual patterns. Successful teens have powerful habits.

The 7 Habits model is definitely a very good model.

[The 7 habits have their origins in some 200 years of published success literature. Both authors have done an extremely marvellous job in synthesising all those time-tested tools & ideas.]

  2. This book is fantastic! Was great assistance for my neice who is getting ready to finish High School. Very well written and easy to read.

  3. This book provides a great opportunity to discuss with young teens important habits and goals in life and how to achieve them. The format and approach are appropriate for younger teens to appreciate and enjoy. The examples are helpful and relevant. OVerall a good discussion book for and with younger teens.

  4. I use this book in my clinical practice. It allows my clients to make positive changes in thier lives. It is user friendly and easy to use and understand.

  5. Nice workbook with alot of interesting information. Nice guide for ANY teenager who wants to do something with their life.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Expectant Mother's Soul.
  1. Although I read almost every single publication of Chicken Soup, I must say this is definitely my favourite, especially that we are expecting our third child.

Before reading this book, I must admit I was not sure if we did the right thing to concieve a third child but now I know more than missing to cherish every moment of our pregnancy.

This book has moved every kind of feelings in us from happiness to excitement, to sadness at some times and made me thankful for this beautiful gift from God.

This is a must for every expectant parent.

  2. this book was exactly what i needed to help me love the feeling of being pregnate. during my second pregnancy i wasn't feeling all that hot until my hubby came home with the book. i read this book three times already, even my four year old loves the stories. i cried and laughed and cried some more...read this book if you're looking for something to cheer you up while you're feeling down! An excellent book--I promise!!!!

  3. If you're an expectant mother you will appreciate the stories in this book. They are touching and funny and strike a universal chord that make you realize you're not alone. Five stars! Debbie Farmer, parenting author of 'Don't Put Lipstick on the Cat'

  4. I really hate to give any "Chicken Soup" book less than a 5 star because I am a huge fan.

I was slightly disappointed in the content of this book. I really was hoping and expecting that it would have more stories about giving birth. It says on the cover that the 101 stories inspire and warm the hearts of soon-to-be-mothers but I felt like the subjects were too general.

For example, the contents are 1. We're Pregnant, 2. Nine Months and Counting, 3 Expectant Fathers, 4. Challenges along the Way, 5. Special Delivery 6. Small Miracle 7. Memorable moments, 8. On Motherhood, 9. Expectant Wisdom.

I didn't find many birth stories - in fact, I don't think there was even one.

However, in spite of my need for positive birth stories, I still love the stories that they put in the book.

Sheri Menelli, childbirth educator, doula, speaker and author of "[...]"

  5. I was looking for a book like this, one that doesn't go by month to month of what I should expect physically, medically. It's a book that gives you some perspective from personnal short stories. I brought it to read during my "baby moon" and it just made me feel whole-especially mentally. Too bad there isn't a more recent version but, I would buy this as a gift-especially for a first time mother.

5 comments about Shooter's Bible - 99th Edition.
  1. As the title says this is the book for any shooter, if its not in here it probably does not exist!

  2. Stoeger Books is the premier publisher of reference books on rifles and pistols. First published in 1924, and now in it's newly revised and expanded 99th edition, Stoeger Books "Shooter's Bible" continues to be the preferred and comprehensive firearms reference guide covering new products, specifications, and prices on thousands of firearms and related equipment. In addition to informed and informative feature articles, this edition of "Shooter's Bible' covers handguns, rifles, shotguns, black powder, sights and scopes, ammunition, ballistics, and reloading. Superbly organized and profusely illustrated throughout, "Shooter's Bible" continues to be an essential, core addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library firearms reference collections. Also very highly recommended from Stoeger Books for firearms reference collections is the new 30th edition of their "Gun Trader's Guide" (9780883173442, $24.95).

  3. I purchased this for my dad for Christmas. I have gotten one for him every Christmas for the last 8 years. He is an avid gun collector and enjoys reading this book yearly to see how gun values change. He and I both think this is a great book for anyone who likes guns.

  4. This edition is useless. It does not contain gun values as previous editions, particularly on used guns. Many guns are not included in this issue.

  5. I obtained this gun book for a Christmas present and it was a big hit. My husband used the book to help price guns for himself and before I knew it, several of his friends were calling and asking for information that was in the book for their own use.

5 comments about Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values.
  1. If you are interested in information on pre-1920's American firearms, Flaydermans is hands-down the better choice in my opinion. Although Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun values is incredibly comprehensive, it favors 20th century firearms. About 50% the 18th and 19th century firearms I was interested in I could not find Fjestad's book. I found all of them in Fladerman's Guide. Another strength of Fladerman's book are the illustrated entires, hugely helpful in locating specific guns and a feature non-existent in Fjestdad's book. The photograph's also are a valuable tool in learning about firearms I never knew existed. Fjestad's grading system is undoubtedly more comprehensive. But I doubt it is useful to anyone not already an experienced dealer in the field. A minor irritant in Fjestad's book was it's clear link to the NRA and contained too many pages of unnecessary advertising/propaganda - something I would not have opted to pay for, even as a former NRA member. Given my area of interest, Flayderman's is the clear winner - and also a lot more interesting and fun to use.

  2. The ninth edition of the best and most complete guide of identification and evaluation of antique American firearms. Flayderman is the authoritative source for this sort of information. This edition is an improvement on the excellent earlier editions, with more information (and new sections, including an objective discussion of American "dueling pistols", and much tighter editing and proofreading.

  3. I have bought 5 prior editions of this book. It is the best antique firearms valuation tool out there and full of interesting information.

  4. As always, Flayderman presents the best in his guides. Well written and explanations are very accurate. A must for gun collectors and dealers.

  5. I have ll the previous books, I have been waiting for this to come out. A must have for anyone who collects antique gun's.

5 comments about The Official American Numismati Association Grading Standards For United States Coins (Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins).
  1. This is an excellent resource book for grading coins, however I feel that it would be far more useful if all of the photographs used in the description of coins, were in high definition glossy color. I realize that doing so would likely double or triple the price of the book, but it would be highly useful if the photographs of coins were of the same quality as is the description of them. I gave this book 5 stars because I believe that it is the best one available on the market, however, if another publisher comes out with an all color, high definition photograph coin grading book, this one would likely take a back seat to that one.

  2. This is a great buy! All the info you need and good quality binding on the book.

  3. If you want the true grade and able to judge the true value of a coin, you need to be able to grade according to ANA standards yourself. There is no better book than this, with clear explanations and pictures. I buy and sell a lot of coins, and I use this book many times a week and recommend it to all.

  4. Very well done. The introductory information is key to understanding the rest of the book. Grading is made undertandable.

    Very Good!

  5. Thanks so much. I reference coin values in this book as I am on-line bidding.

5 comments about The Carnivorous Carnival (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 9).
  1. Now we are back in the belly of the beast. The Carnivorous Carnival was an exciting book. Klaus, Sunny, and Violet joined Madame Lulu's carnival. They dressed themselves up as freaks so Count Olaf wouldn't recognize them. At the end, Violet and Klaus were in an RV being pulled by Count Olaf himself. Count Olaf has someone cut the cord that attaches the RV to the car and pulls away with Sunny. I highly recommend this book.
The book has a phrase that is repeated through the book whenever the children are about to be in a bad situation. "Back in the belly of the beast" was repeated about nine times in this novel and every time something bad happened. For example, when the cord attaching the car to the RV was cut; also when they figured out he knew who they were.
The book was very exciting. At many points, I could not set the book down. The events in the book were so extreme. When Olaf said to push the children, I thought they would die.
The book had a thrilling ending. Olaf was able to escape from Violet and Klaus with their baby sister. IN real life, he wouldn't have been able to pull off stealing their sister, so it was more fictional, but a great ending. The ending is not cliché because the villain got away.
The book had many creative characters. One of the characters was a contortionist; another was a humpback; another was a wolf baby. I suggest this book to seventh graders.

  2. Do you like books that have mystery, adventures, secrets, or orphans in them? If not, then I am warning you right now that you can put this book down get a happier story like "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." It's your decision; you can choose the book I just suggested or you can choose "The Carnivorous Carnival". If you want to know more or get to know the Baudelaire's read on, if not you can put this down and run around screaming like a maniac into the night.

This is the story of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, three orphans who have been put under the care of Count Olaf. This story began when the Baudelaire parents perished in a fire that destroyed their entire mansion. The three children were on Briny Beach when Mr. Poe, the wealthy banker told the Baudelaire orphans that, well, they were orphans. Then, at Count Olafs' house he put the Baudelaire's to work. Some chores rough, some chores were as easy as ringing a doorbell.

If I were to give the book a rating out of 10, I would personally give it a 9 ½. I think this is the best book I've read up to date because, it has a lot of suspenseful moments, and a whole lot of mystery, drama, and some clues to whether the Baudelaire parents are alive or dead.
I highly recommend this book for every age group from 10 and up. The only people who wouldn't like this book are people who hate books without unhappy endings.

If you want to know more about or get to know the Baudelaire's you can start from the beginning and read the 13 books in chronological order, or you can read them scattered like I did. It doesn't matter how you read it, it just matters if you do read it. (All books are Accelerated Reader Eligible.)

    By: Jordan

  3. This book was definitely different. Lots of canival characters. Still consistent with the other books. Lots of action. Very entertaining. Highly recommended.

  4. Dear Mr. Snicket,

We have found out about you telling our story, and we wanted to communicate with you. Luckily for us, this reviewer visited the carnival in which we were performing in an unusual capacity (as f-r-e-a-k-s) and agreed to make this message available to you. At first we were enraged, since we realized that you were interjecting funny comments in our story, which seemed to derive from really bad taste. But then we understood, if you did not do that, nobody would want to read about our miserable experiences.

As you already know, we barely escaped from the hospital. "Slash!", that was a comment from Sunny, who intends to say that Olaf and his cronies were trying to chop off Violet's head and they almost succeeded. We sneaked into the trunk Count Olaf's car and ended up in this carnival, trying to figure out the secret of V.F.D. If you have any information, please, please, please, help us out. "Chersssh", that was Sunny again, saying that we found out that one of our beloved parents may be alive. If you have any news, we would appreciate you providing this information to us.

We have found a few compassionate people in the carnival, but the lions arrived a short time ago, and we are getting scared. If you have any way to contact Mr. Poe, tell him to come rescue us. He seems to have missed our telegram. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Sincerely,

    Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire

PS from the reviewer: Mr. Snicket, I realize that you have found out about the events that unfolded at the carnival and already wrote a book about it. I applaud your accuracy in telling the tale and I thoroughly enjoyed your use of humor at such a grim time. I hope you can help these children and I hope I get to find out soon about what happened to them. I have a lot of questions and the suspense is killing me. I will now let you get back to your writing, which I hope many people get to read. Best regards.

  5. The Carnivorous Carnival is the 9th installment in the Baudelaire orphans' Series of Unfortunate Events. The orphans have escaped the burning hospital from Book 8 by climbing in the trunk of Count Olaf's car and sneaking away with him and his evil henchmen. They arrive at a carnival isolated in the barren hinterlands and immediately realize that they must disguise themselves so that Olaf and his friends will not recognize them. They get jobs as carnival freaks and try to find a way to escape and continue to look for the Snicket file and the possibility that one of their parents might still be alive.

This book is another fun installment in the series, but unfortunately, for some time the series has been dragging. It is possible that for children each book is entertaining as a stand alone book, but for me, I find that the repetitive formula of each is now tiresome and I am ready for it to conclude. I continue to be impressed by the writing style and the clever way the author uses language to instruct and entertain. Overall the series is fantastic, but the pace is frustratingly slow at this point. Hopefully the pace will accelerate as the ending draws near.
