  1. Although the artwork examples are dated, this book is a terrific resource for print collectors and those interested in preserving paper in general. Written in a very clear and logical approach, the chapters detail the history, lore, collecting, and conservation of prints in an easy to read fashion. What I enjoyed most is the "examples" section, made up of moderately priced (no Picasso lithos or Rembrandt etchings) contemporary prints, mostly from UK artists. This book is serious about printmaking and conservation.

There should really be a second edition of this book for the new millennium since there are new conservation methods and techniques for printmaking.

  2. This small book contains a great deal of data for the print collector. Very informative comprehensive view of print-making, from identification to cleaning and repair. Includes easy-to-understand printmaking terms and definations throughout the book. Excellent organization, with complete table of contents and index. Obviously written by a passionate collector and instructor.

  1. This book is exactly want the title implies. This is a concise encyclopedia of glass. Well laid out in 10 sections with an intriguing forward and an informative introduction. There is a select bibliography a section on care and conservation among other interesting finds. Color plates abound with concise descriptions.
If you only obtain one book on the diversity of glass, this should be the one.
    Contents:
    Pre-Roman glass
    Roman Glass
    Islamic Glass
    Medieval Glass
    The renaissance Period
    The Eighteenth Century
Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau

1 comments about Warman's Advertising: A Value and Identification Guide (Encyclopedia of Antiques and Collectibles).
  1. A brand new book containing more than 600 large, sharp, black and white photos and a gorgeous 16 page full color section. There's plenty of background information provided, in addition to the current pricing. Topics range from A & P, Adams Gum, Anheuser-Busch, to International Harvester, John Deere, Ken-L, to Z.B.T., and Zeno Gum. This is a good general reference work for the advertising collector, covering more than 5,000 listings. A very complete index, makes item location easy. The advertising collector will refer to this up-do-date volume often.

2 comments about Odd Man In: Norton Simon and the Pursuit of Culture.
  1. Norton Simon Museum of Art at Pasadena is well known its surperb
collection of the old masters, the impressionists and Asian arts.
These collection is only based on the founder, a self-made millionaire Norton Simon's taste.

This book describes how he earned money and spent to the collection. Although he believed only his way of doing things and made a friction everywhere he goes, his talent, money and passion made possible to build the museum titled his name. Many episodes make this book readable and interesting even a reader who isn't interested in Southern California or Art collector.

  2. Norton Simon was what so many rich men want to be, but can't for lack of the kind of zeal and willingness to jump into areas which require leaving everything you know behind and immersing yourself full-fold into that world.

For those Southern Californians familiar with The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, this will be an especially interesting read. If you have a dreamy idea of what art collecting should be, this book will shatter your delusions. To excell at anything takes a willingness to accept high risks, discipline, and the guiding passion to ensure one's vision is carried forth. Thus, it was with Norton Simon, who managed to build an empire that later would become Hunt Foods, and amass a collection of art that ranges from Southeast Asian antiquities to the well known impressionists Degas, Manet, and Gaugin. Norton Simon not only led the way in integrating businesses but perhaps his finest legacy left behind was one of the most generous and comprehensive collections of art in the world.

Norton Simon had wanted to install his collection in Fullerton, CA, where he had made his fortune with Hunt Foods. One can only bemoan the shortsightedness of the town leaders, who mired his intentions in a bureaucratic nightmare, resulting in his taking the entire collection to Pasadena. Lessson learned: Don't mess with a titan when he offers you a Modigliani.

This is the only book you'll ever find on Norton Simon. For a public figure, a maverick and an outspoken leader, he was fiercely private.

  1. This is a wonderful book filled with lots of color photos of the earliest Kewpies. Since the authors are members of Rose O'Neil's family, they concentrate on the Kewpie figures, dolls, and dishes that were made under the supervision of Rose herself. If you are a Kewpie fan, this book is for you. The prices given are for 2003.

1 comments about Marking Time: Collecting Watches and Thinking about Time.
  1. I'm not really a watch collector or WIS (watch idiot savant as some watch collectors refer to themselves), but I loved this book! Unlike just about every other watch book I've seen, it's _not_ just a catalog of different watch models with short descriptions. It's really well written, with prose worthy of the New Yorker. It does an excellent job of telling the history of watches, with the author's personal anecdotes integrated into the story. If I had the money, I'd enjoy collecting watches, but this book is an enjoyable read in and of itself.

1 comments about The Royal Winton Collector's Handbook: From 1925 Cottage Ware, Art Deco, Lustre Ware, Pastels, Etc.
  1. Miller is well known in collector's circles for the Miller Guides. This small book is an excellent start for new Winton collectors, and a good resource for seasoned collectors.

While this book does quite a good job of listing a number of the sytles and patterns to be found within the Royal Winton range, its use as a price guide is VERY limited due to the fact that it is not a comprehensive guide.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting Winton.
