2 comments about Antique & Collectible Stanley Tools Guide to Identity & Value.
  1. This extensive book covers almost every tool made by Stanley. The author had assistance from the Stanley Works in Conn and many major tool collectors. Tools are very accurately described so that amature collectors can determine the model , manufacture date and current value of most Stanley tools. A very detailed review of the major categories of planes and patents is presented in the back of the book along with a complete index by tool model number. If you collect Stanley tools, this book HAS to be in your workshop.

  2. The sine-qui-non of tool collecting references. If you can't find it in Walters book chances are you won't find it anywhere. Okay you have a #3 plane but what type of #3 plane? The differences can be subtle but important (like a fine wine). Any serious tool collector or curious tool user will enjoy this book.

3 comments about Art Deco Lighting (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
  1. I must say that I was greatly anticipating this book and had preordered the book. I have been to the author's store in New Hope and, although very pricey, had thought the store offered a good selection of Art Deco Lighting, including items made by Frankart, Nuart and Ronson. I was deeply disappointed when I received the book and found no Frankarts -- often viewed by collectors of American Art Deco as some of the best lamps made during the period and highly collectible -- with a few mediocre Nuart lamps pictured. The book is beautifully photographed and very clearly is a labor of love. It is just a great shame that there is little real substance included in the book to give a good overview to those who either truly collect, or are learning more about how and what to collect, lamps from the Deco period. I hope some other author provides a better offering the future.

  2. Millman's book presents a wide variety of Art Deco lamps, sconces and chandeliers. The photography is superb and beautifully highlights these grand fixtures of a time gone by. While some may only be interested in the Frankarts & Nuarts, this book offers a wide variety of lighting that may still be accessible to those priced out of that extreme high end market. As a diverse collector myself, I can truly appreciate the vast range of lighting, American & European, illustrated in this book and recommend it highly to all interested in the Art Deco era.

  3. I can never get enough of this deco stuff. Another great book that makes a collector drool over the different lamps that were made during that era. Unfortunately, most of the lamps are out of the price range of your average collectors. However, if one keeps an eye out on auction websites, you might get a lucky find. For a serious collector or one who dabbles now and then into the deco world, this book is a great find.

2 comments about Longfellow's Tattoos: Tourism, Collecting, And Japan.
  1. Charles Longfellow was the son of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Charles visited Japan in the 1870s intending a brief visit, and stayed for two years, returning to Boston with photos and elaborate tattoos he had 'collected' on his body. But Christine M.E. Guth's Longfellow's Tattoos: Tourism, Collecting, And Japan is not so much a survey of collectible items nor even tattoo history, as a cultural expose of Japan in the 19th century travel world. Chapters survey the state and nature of Japanese culture in the world of the times, using art and curios as a focal point.

  2. This is one of the most fascinating stories I have ever read. Politically correct academics have succeeded in erasing Longfellow from the American canon, replacing him and his contemporaries with names you've never heard and will never know how to pronounce. Perhaps this bit of exotica if not to say erotica will give life back to this former pillar of American culture. It is the son, not the sage of Cambridge whom Professor Guth has chosen as her subject. But what a character he is. Longfellow Jr. had very little going for himself besides boredom and a nearly limitless bank account, so he went on an extended grand tour of the Orient, setting himself up in a Japanese harem, stocked like a koi pond which nubile Japanese maidens. Besides an addiction to Asian flesh, young Longfellow seems to have keyed into that great American pastime known as shopping with the result that he brought a warehouse full of souvenires back to fill Boston's museums and the mansions of his father's aristocratic friends. Any way you look at it, this story has legs. It's a miracle Hollywood hasn't grabbed hold of it. Stay tuned.

2 comments about Classic Coca-Cola Calendars.
  1. Second book in Petretti's/Beyer's comprehensive look at specific areas of Coca-Cola collecting. This book provides a great deal of history behind the calendars as well as some beautiful color pictures of nearly every calendar that Coke ever released, including some very rare pre-1900 calendars. There is a guide to storing and preserving calendars in the back, as well as the most up-to-date price guide available on the subject. Those who bought Classic Coca-Cola Trays know what to expect and others should be pleasantly surprised. Recommend this book to collectors (a must!) and to anybody that is interested in the history of advertising.

  2. This new hardbound 176 page beauty of a library volume with colorful plastic laminated covers features 125 full color and 20 black and white very large, sharp photos of these gems. Its loaded with information including: Development of early printing and advertising, role of promotional materials in the early years of the Coca-Cola Company, Distributor Calendars, Bottler Calendars, Foreign Calendars, Home and Reference Calendars. A complete Guide For Collectors tells you what to collect, preservation and display of early calendars, protecting, restoration info, and a very complete grading guide. 1999 values are shown in 3 grades. A really beautiful and unique new reference that belongs in the collector's library.
