5 comments about Hanson's American Art Pottery Collection: Identification and Values.
  1. This book has wonderful enlarged photo details that are essential for accurate identification and are invaluable to a pottery collector. For example, the book has photos of every glaze produced by Nelson McCoy which really goes far beyond most of the books I've seen. The summaries of the pottery makers give essential details (that other books do not provide) on how to identify a potential work of art. The updated pricing guides are very helpful as well. Thanks!

  2. The Hanson' book on American Art Pottery is a most useful and easily read book of its kind. The photographs are sharp, clean and show the pottery, their shape, color and design as they were meant to be seen. Also, the production of the book presents itself well to the viewer. Although not a long time collector, I'd say this is a "must have" for new and seasoned collectors. I'd give this five stars.

  3. This is an excellent book to carry with you when you are scouring for Arts and Craft pottery. It's full of hundreds of amazing color pictures for easy indetification as well as suggested prices. This book focuses on specific brands and highlights some big name brands to watch for. It is a great reference for both collectors and resellers. You will not be disappointed as The Hanson's are a true asset to pottery collectors. Be certain to check out their other books as well they are equal in all aspects. An easy gift giving idea for this coming holiday season!
Thanks for putting out this much anticipated guide!

  4. This wonderful book explores some of the worlds most sought after pottery including Bauer, Brush-McCoy, Peters & Reed, Weller, Roseville and many more. It contains fantastic photos, price guides and is a wealth of information. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone seeking more information about American Art pottery! A+++ Thank you Bob and Jane, you rock!

  5. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the authors for this wonderful reference book. I found the pictures to be of exceptional quality and the descriptions to be quite accurate.

For the experienced, as well as the novice owner/collector of American Pottery, this book is an invaluable guide. Take this book on your hunting trips... You will not be disappointed.

5 comments about The Encyclopedia of Marx Action Figures: A Price & Identification Guide.
  1. This is the most outstanding collection guide I have ever read! The author seems to have put unlimited hours into research to come up with such a thorough history of Marx action figures. The photos are fabulous! I've never seen such a variety of great pictures. This book will inspire many others to become new collectors and relive their childhood with Johnny West! A totally awesome book! Many thanks to the author, Tom Heaton, for finally putting a book like this together for us diehards! Cheri Basham

  2. Tom Heaton's Encyclopedia of Marx Action Figures is an invaluable tool for any Marx collector. It includes more in-depth coverage of Marx's action figures than any other book to date.

  3. Tom helps us reclaim out youth, it is great to be able to pick this book and feel like a kid again. My 8 year daughter and I use the book for a guide as we search through the thrift stores and antique stores for the best of the west toys.

  4. This is a must have book if you are a Marx Action Figure collector or even a fan. I have never seen so many excellent pictures that can really help a collector. Since owning this book I have used it on a daily basis.

  5. Tom Heaton's book is an excellent resource for Marx collectors or those who used to play with Marx toys in their childhood. It is packed with clear and colorful photos of the toys, packaging, accessories, etc...

For many years, Santa left me a Best of the West figure under the tree. Being able to flip through the pages and remember the toys and all the neat stuff they came with is a wonderful walk down memory lane.

Although I still have most of my childhood collection, they are in a terrible state of repair. It is comforting to know there are current versions being made (details in this book).

A must have addition to your library if you collect, or used to collect, Marx Action Figures.

4 comments about Collecting Japanese Movie Monsters.
  1. I was really looking forward to this book, and unfortunately con not find much to recommend about it. The listings are woefully incomplete and many times inaccurate. Photography is only so-so, and is mainly filled with items from the local Toys-R-Us. A better book to get would be "The Unauthorized Guide to Godzilla Collectibles". The one bright spot is the 14 pages on Gamera, which while could be better is finally altogether under one cover.

  2. This is not the first price guide on these toys. Sean Linkenback's was the first and much better than this.... Ms./Mr. Cain should research the subject before saying what prices are. Linkenback is a respected dealer of Japanese toys and thus infitely more qualified for an endeavor such as this. Cain, you should take a research class.

  3. While not perfect, this book is better than the earlier reviews said. The book is very well illustrated, and most of the pictures are very clear and sharp. To say that the pictures come mainly from a Toys-R-Us is simply false: The vast majority of the toys pictured are items not even distributed in the U.S., to say nothing of the movie posters, magazines, etc.

Any price guide is eventually going to be out of date. Many of the prices in this book are still current, although there are several that are not. I did find a couple of errors, where a picture was incorrectly labeled. To be fair, Sean Linkenback's book has similar errors and in many examples his prices are more dated than Ms. Cain's, plus her book includes items not even listed in his.

Yes, Linkenback's book is more in-depth, but it has its flaws too. As with other kinds of price guides, thinking of a single edition as being all encompassing or definitive is a mistake.

  4. Dana Cain's book is an enjoyable, well written guide to an increasingly popular sub-category of monster toy collecting. No book on pricing collectibles is likely to remain current for long, and its real value lies in providing the reader with a pictorial overview of its subject. COLLECTING JAPANESE MOVIE MONSTERS succeeds very well in this, and its text provides some lively historical background into that singularly odd period in cinema where colossal creatures used Tokyo as a ring and we watched guilt-free. Note to "serious" Japanese movie monster collectors: don't take it all so seriously. Those responsible for the men in the monster suits didn't.

2 comments about Price Guide to Antique Clocks.
  1. Price Guide to Antique Clocks by Robert and Harriett Swedberg contains information on the identification of American clocks from the mid-19th century until about 1940. There are more than 600 photographs with identifying information in this book. These are different photographs than were included in their 1989 book, "American Clocks and Clockmakers". While prices for the clocks were given, there was no information about whether these prices were retail or auction prices or how the prices were obtained.

  2. As a fairly new clock collector I was looking for information to help me when purchasing clocks off of ebay. This was the first book I bought and I haven't looked at it since the day it came in the mail. I came across the Tran Duy Ly books shortly after this and purchased one, the one for Ingraham clocks and watches. I used this book constantly and have since purchased three more, (for Ansonia, Seth Thomas and New Haven). I pull them out every time I am interested in a clock. They are extremely thorough and accurate. Plus, you can get updates just for the prices, you don't have to buy a whole new book.

This book is going to be one that stays on the bookshelf and will rarely, if ever, be referenced. Purchase the ones by Tran Duy Ly instead.
