3 comments about The Fabulous Victrola 45.
  1. This book does a good job in bringing back to life this wonderful record player made primarily by RCA Victor Company. It shows the progression of styles, especially the early bakelite models that were always the envy of every young school person in the 1950's. You knew the real thing was yours, if you had one of the RCA Victor Bakelite models. The author, adds his own love of the machine along with an excellent job in tracing the history of the 45 record player from its' inception in 1949, when it was initially introduced to the public. Anyone owning one of these record players, or simply interested in seeing the transition it made from 1949 through the 1960's should get this book. Highly recommended.

  2. Very nicely done. Lots of information that is useful if you are interested in the 1950's 45rpm Players. Because of this book, I acquired an Alice in Wonderland 1950's player and restored it using the information from the book and links to suppliers of replacement parts. I even created "New" decals from the old ones so my unit looks like it came right out of the box and plays as new....
My highest regards for the author and contributors to this book
    Leland Faber

  3. Best 45rpm reference book I have read to date. I have collected several 45 rpm players. Every machine I own is listed and/or pictured in this excellent reference book. The only thing missing would be more information for replacing the outdated 45 rpm cartridge. This book has been added to my "best read" recommendation list.

  1. This is the best guide (there have been few)that has been released to date. The best thing about it are the accurate time frames and the pricing for the individual pieces. Plus the glaze and clay content history are very helpful!!! Get this while you can, because knowing Schiffer books, it will go out of print soon!!

  2. I was born in Avalon MANY years ago, and raised there for many years; and I have always loved the lore of the island. I have also become a collector of pottery and turned my attention to the wonderful items that came from my hometown. Super book! L.P.

  1. This book is a part of my Flow Blue research library. Jeffrey Snyder is a leading authority in Flow Blue collecting. His descriptions are clear and precise. His photography is fantastic.
The prices listed in this book should only be used for insurance purposes as the Flow Blue collecting phase swings with decorating fashions and colors of the times. In reality, you can find prices much more affordable than suggested in ths book.
Add this to your collection and you will enjoy it for years to come!

5 comments about Florence's Glassware Pattern Identification Guide: Easy Identification for Glassware from 1900 Through the 1960s, Vol. 2.
  1. The book was very helpful, great photos, nicely laid out. Buyers should definately know, however, that it is a book of more rare pieces.

  2. I was a bit disappointed in this book mainly because of the way in which it was set up. I am used to their other books such as: "Collectible Glassware from the 40s, 50, 60s". I didn't find it as easy to navigate. The pictures are great though.

  3. For a collector, this book lacks many of the patterns, needed to know, in pricing a product. Some of the patterns pictured are not defined enough. A
magnifying glass may be needed for a closer look. For beginners, it is a respected book, written by two experts.

  4. Was a good book, but if you already have guide 1,2, or 3 it was mostly repeats with different picture views. If this is your first guide it is a great one!!

  5. I have many pieces of depression glass and didn't know any of the pattern names. i ordered the book to help identify them. it is helping with that but i thought the book also contained info on estimated value.

3 comments about Zippo Lighters: An Identification and Price Guide (Identification and Value Guides (Krause)).
  1. While the book has some interesting information on the subject of Zippo lighters, I feel too much space is used to show old magazine ads for Zippo lighters. This space could have been used for more pictures of actual Zippo lighters and updated pictures from inside the Zippo factory. The pictures of the plant itself show workers putting Zippos in the old flame boxes which were only used until 1976. The other main issue of my dissapointment was the apparent lack of research that went in to the writing of the book. There are many errors in the style names of lighters shown in the pictures as well as the values. The biggest error that stuck in my head was where they said Zippo manufacturing cleans the lighters before they return them to the customers after they go through the repair clinic.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Pope didn't have the opportunity to finish the book he started, perhaps more research of facts would have been done before publishing.
While the book that David Poore wrote years ago is a bit outdated on the values, it is a very valuable piece of reference material for the novice and seasoned Zippo collector. I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of buying a book on Zippos that they consider Mr. Poores book instead.

  2. Nice pictures, but author knows nothing about Zippo! Captions don't fit the pictures, prices are way off, but its nice to look at. Would not use as a reference book.

  3. Excellent book but not good to have alone. This is more of a supplemental.

4 comments about The Matchcover Collector's Price Guide: The Comprehensive Reference Book and Price Guide to Matchcovers.
  1. 304 pages jam packed with information. Features over 350 photos and illustrations, many in full color. More than 10,000 matchcovers are described with estimated values provided. Tells the history, how to grade, beginners tips and hints, company trademarks and more. Matchcover collectors are sure to learn from this book and will refer to it often. Very useful and interesting.

  2. I've spent a lot of time in this industry, and I was disappointed to see the lack of accuracy with many basic details. Clearly the guy has a lot of experience with this subject area, but his manner of encapsulating his knowledge should have been done more at arm's length, rather than attempting to come across as a one-size-fits-all solution, again, because it looks like it took a serious toll on accuracy. If you're looking for pictures and tidbits, then go for it, but what about the bigger picture? Perhaps his next release will cover this. One other thing: I found lots of typos and grammatical errors. Again, perhaps the next releast will fix these too. I would wait until then.

  3. Lots of cool pictures. I've spent hours looking at them, but I really wanted more info like how I can place a value on matchcovers. Also looked for tips on how to take care of matchcovers, but I didn't see much. I think this stuff is important, so I had to buy another book by someone else. To bad this book doesn't cover that stuff. If you don't care much about reading and just want the pix, the book is OK.

  4. Let's see, I have matchbooks with matches and matchbooks without matches. Some have front strikes some have back strikes. Some of the matches have a design on them when the cover is opened. Some have 20 matches some have 30 matches...what to do? Well, I ordered this book and quickly, some 900 matchbooks of different sizes, shapes, ages and colors all began to come together with order. I even had some of the exact matchbooks described and pictured in the book. I recommend for the novice who finds him/herself with a sudden collection of firestarters from yesteryear.
