  1. If you've ever wondered if your "find" is indeeed authentic, this book will resolve the majority of your questions.
In addition, it is a beautifully designed book with many luminous photographs and closeup details. I'm proud to display it on my table and carry it while antique shopping. It has always been met with a knowledgeable nod.

  1. This is "THE BIBLE" of button collectors. It is a huge volume loaded with color plates and detailed descriptions of thousands of buttons. The most informative button collecting book available.

  2. This is the most complete button reference book I have ever seen. It is well worth the money. Beautiful pictures and informative price guides.

  3. Just about the best all around guide for the serious button collector.

  4. Button Collectors.....YES! This is the button bible! Yes, this is the best book to have! Great for the button pro or the button beginner! For years now, button collectors all over the world have been trying to get their hands on this book: THE BIG BOOK OF BUTTONS. Many have spent hundreds of their hard earned money on it through online auctions. Many have written to the publishers several times asking them to please re-release this out-of-print book. The publishers declared that "no, it is too expensive to re-print", or "no, we are absolutely not printing this book again". Guess what? Save your pennies! THE BIG BOOK OF BUTTONS: 3RD EDITION IS BEING RELEASED SUMMER OF 2006! Information is accurate, as some retailers are already taking pre-orders an entire year ahead of time. I would recomend getting it at Amazon where you are guaranteed. 3rd edition is expected to sell between 225.00 & 275.00. Book will now have all new updates, including some plastic buttons. If money is no object to you, go ahead, spend hundreds on the first two editions. Or wait to pre-order it at Amazon next year for less! --review written Febuary of 2005.

  1. For those who admire the style of the later Henry James, and enjoyed the final three "big" novels - The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove and the Golden Bowl - this much shorter and lighter novel - almost a short story by James' standards - will be a very pleasant diversion.

Obviously adapted from his play without much attempt to disguise this fact, the novel is driven by the characters' sharp and often witty dialogue. The characters are well drawn, and the story is unusually straightforward for James. While there remain the usual elliptical phrases and circumlocutions we've come to expect in his later novels, these have been toned down in the interests of dramatic momentum and the book is actually an easy read.

While it is certainly not one of the great James novels, it is nevertheless recommended to those who enjoy reading this author.

  1. Excellent, authoritative & easier to understand reference guide to this very difficult subject. Have to re-read a few times to understand, but guide is only one I found to be understandable. Very in depth research went into this reference & guide. I highly recommend for amateurs & professionals.

1 comments about African Art in American Collections.
  1. This is not a coffee table book in that there are no pretty full page colour pictures - everything is in black and white and generally quite small. However, for anyone familiar with African art who wants an exhaustive catalogue of the range of works available, this is an invaluable book - luckily, I had seen it in a book shop, so I knew what I was getting. Moreover, many of the pieces are major works or at least of significant aesthetic quality, which cannot be said of most published groupings of African art. Just make sure this is what you are looking for. Now, a full color version of this in two volumes with full page reproductions, that would be worth waiting for.

  1. this book is a definite for the collector of lighters. it is a book that all collectors of lighters should have. it is wonderful.

  2. I bought this book for the history of the Evans Manufacturing company, and it was a great read. However, I am a collector of Evans compacts, and this book gave that topic only a small amount of space and only covered late '40s and '50s compacts. There are tons from the late '20s and '30s that could have been featured here as well to make the book worthwhile to me. But the book covers lighters really well, and if I choose to start collecting those, I will study this book hard before I make any choices.
