2 comments about Art Glass Nouveau.
  1. Art Glass Nouveau was written by a husband and wife team, Lee and Ray Glover. They have photographed museum quality glass art from the late 1800's - 1930. This is the time period art lovers call Art Nouveau - or the new art.

The pictures are breathtakingly gorgeous, in full color. The text is outstanding in that it not only gives information about the artist (included are the most famous) but tells some of the details of how the glass was formed.

After reading this beautiful book I feel much more knowledgeable about how these treasures were created, yet no less in awe of their creator. I wonder how and from what heavenly body these artists came from.

If antique dealors knew of this book, they would certainly be clawing to get at it! Too bad it is out of print! Actually it has been brought back once already, in 1975.

It is a delight to view, it is abundant in information, and is well written.

  2. What we appreciated most about the Art Glass Nouveau is the 424 full color plates and the thorough descriptions. There is little value in a reference book if you cannot clearly see a good illustration of the subject matter. Small price for a lot of information.

The only negative about the book is the plate description and the plate illustration is not on the same page...which makes it a little cumbersome when using the book. But the beautiful colored illustrations and description more than make up for this little issue.

Thank you also for the terrific service. Sincerely, Julia L. Fairchild

  1. What a helpful book. Ms. Frank's primary message is "don't let the so-called experts intimidate you." In simple, down-to-earth prose she makes even neophytes feel as if their opinion and taste matter. Her book is chock full of stories and pearls of wisdom distilled from a lifetime of enjoying art. She explains terms, demystifies art criticism and tells charming tales from her career as an art buyer, dealer and collector.

  2. This book is beautifully written yet easy to understand, even for the novice. It is better than an Art History course at a University. The author clearly explains the origins and characteristics of Impressionalism through Abstract Art. The book is informative while being a pleasant reading experience.
    Don't fail to read it!!

  3. If youre looking for technical and detailed advice then do not buy this book. It should be titled "Personal Memoirs". I don't have the money to buy the artist that she talks about in this book. If I were considering a painting by Cassat or an etching by Braque then I would be well beyond what this book informs. If youre really a newcomer to collecting then buy a book that will teach you how to determine a paintings age by the condition of the canvas or how to distinguish a valuble lithograph. Anybody would know 90% of what this book advises.

  1. This book is an excellent resource if you are interested in collecting pottery from all peublos as well as a variety of families. Although not quite as in depth as Rick Dillingmham's Fourteen Families, she does mention many families that he does not.

  2. Unfortunately, this book promises a lot more than it delivers. For example, in its preface, it mentions several families of potters at Acoma named Lewis not related to Lucy Lewis, but they are not even mentioned. Even the section on the family of Lucy Lewis is barely 2 pages. The author for the most part barely skims the surface. I desperately wanted to like this book, but the more I read it, the more I saw was lacking. For one thing, it seriously needed a much better editor. It reads like a grade school student's social studies report, and it is filled with typos, the worst being that many of the photo captions are wrong because the photos were flipped and the captions were not corrected. A major disappointment for the price. Fortunately I bought it in paperback! It did have some good information, but it could have and should have had much more.

  3. The book provided insight into the relationships of the potters on the different pueblos. We like the book. It is inexpensive. We will have it available when we visit the different pueblos.

1 comments about Collecting Plastics: A Handbook and Price Guide.
  1. This is an odd little book. On the one hand, it has a number of photos of interesting items made of plastic over the years. On the other hand, it seems to be neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat. It's not complete enough to be helpful as an exhaustive reference, nor specific enough to cover just one area. It seems to be an overview, and makes us wish the author focused more on one area.

Lindenberger looks at kitchenware a bit more than other items, and then covers things found around the house, along with a small section on children's items. The problem here is that the topic is too vast, and trying to cover it in a book this small is too hard. The book has some lovely photos of some interesting pieces, but it's just not complete. And the prices do not reflect the effect that online auctions have had on the market, and seem high in comparison. A nice try, which could use some updating and additions.
