4 comments about Spyderco Story: The New Shape of Sharp.
  1. I am fascinated by the book's descriptions of the design-rationale behind each of Spyderco's many knives.

Also, the book describes the management philosophy and practice at the Spyderco company. Fascinating insight into what makes Spyderco knives so good!

A nice feature of the book is that it can be read in bits and pieces. It has lots of glossy photos. It reminds me of reading National Geographic magazine. Parts are nice for casual browsing, other parts have in-depth description.

If I have my pants on, I'm carrying a Spyderco knife! If your Spyderco knife is indispensible, I'm confident you'll like this book!

  3. If you are looking for the perfect gift for a knife collector/user or anyone interested in knives, THIS IS THE PERFECT GIFT.

As one who has none of these characteristics, I found the book fascinating- an intriguing look at a world I knew nothing about. The final chapter is an unexpected gold mine of ideas and insights into a company, Spyderco, whose philosophy is guided by integrity ... "being good even if no one is watching".

You'll buy this book because it's the definitive book about a great knife company and its products. When you read it, you will get a lot more...you will learn about the company they call "the mouse with a megaphone" and it's no Mickey Mouse either!

  4. I bought this book for my knife collecting husband who not only loves Spyderco, but is an avid reader. He immediately read the book from cover to cover and refers to it on what seems to be a daily basis. He routinely reads passages to me when we're discussing his knives and why he prefers Spyderco over all others. If you know someone who likes folding knives at all, BUY THIS BOOK!

1 comments about Hats.
  1. This book is in essence a catalog. But what a catalog it is! There are 148 pages of hat photos, divided into chapters mainly by material (straw, felt, horsehair, feathers, etc.) Each page contains approximately three close-up hat photos, with a notation of each hat's year of vintage and a short description. There is little other text, except for a one-page essay at the begining of each chapter.

These are current photos of real hats from collections: a few from the 19th century, most from the early through mid 20th. There is also a chapter on contemporary millinery, which includes a few pages of text and accompanying photos on today's millinery industry. At the end of the book is a price reference for each style depicted.

With photos that are large, close up, and technically excellent, this book is a visual treat for anyone interested in hats or the history of fashion.

  1. This is a good introduction to the topic of laundry material culture, and is a must for the collector. However, for scholars of material and visual culture, it's not as helpful, given that the objects featured often have little information beyond their price and location of production. No date of origin is offered, making it awfully hard to get a good horizon established. Otherwise this is a good introduction to the topic.

1 comments about China, Parian & Bisque German Dolls: Ca. 1840-Ca. 1900.
  1. "A large number of beautiful and unusaul photographic material, many of the early dolls with china, parian and bisque heads are presented in this book for the delight of collectors and art enthusiasts. Skillfully modeled hair styles and trimmings adorned these dolls. Through their subtlely and artistic modelling they are often far more valuable as an art object than a play doll. Since many of them are sought after by collectors, this book presents for the first time in great diversity and color, a wide selection of the most beautiful dolls. They are the oldest among the china head dolls, especially remarkable, and their past extends up to the Royal Porcelain Manufacturers of the 19th century from Meissen and Berlin. Until now their past lay rather poorly illuminated, so that very little was known about these dolls. Only in the last few years has painstaking detective work by comparison of old findings determined new information. Thus was it possible, for the first time to associate a larger number of doll heads to their respective manufacturers. This book illuminates a largely unknown chapter of doll history, offers new knowledge and provides the collector and student of art with valuable help in appreciating, identifying and collecting the modelled hair dolls of the 19th century German dolls."
