  1. This book did not match my expectations. It is fun to flip through and look at some of the images, but most of the photos are not very well done, too cluttered with everything, but the cats. The layout of the book is too cluttered, confusing too. That said, there are a few very nice shots and overall it's a fun book, but i still put it down with a bad taste in my mouth. If you're looking for cool pictures of animals in nice pet-friendly surroundings, but "Animal House Style" by Julia Szabo. It's a so much better book!

  2. Every kitten should come equiped with this book. If you don't like it, you ought to consult a physician. A no-BS, colorful, I-wanna-kittie book, we loved every page. But then...ours is a multi cat home with house cats, barn cats, in-the-studio cats and even yard cats. So maybe I'm a bit too subjective, waddya think?

It's not brain surgery, it is just plain cute. Right now I am ordering six more copies to send to friends and family. No kidding.

  3. This is another book by the authors of the Cat House. This is their story of how they live with the felines who run their home. It's both funny, touching, silly and amazing to what lengths they go to keep their furry brood happy. I can only say that they've exceeded my efforts, but only just. Best wishes to them and to the felines blessed to share their 9 lives with them.

  4. Amazing what cats can "Think" of to get into. Such delightful creatures to watch, enjoy, love!!!

  5. This is the second book by the authors of The Cats' House. We bought this copy for friends in B.C., and they tell us they love the ideas in the book. They also plan to "open up" the walls of their new home with cat-ways, make cat-tunnels between rooms, and paint everything in bright Mexi-colors. We can't wait to see how it turns out!

If you and your friends love color and cats too, this is the perfect gift!

5 comments about The Kitten Owner's Manual: Solutions to all your Kitten Quandaries in an easy-to-follow question and answer format.
  1. Arden Moore's "The Kitten Owner's Manual" is a highly informative, clear and often entertaining answer book THAT ACTUALLY works. So often I have turned to a pet book to help me care for my new kitten and I've come away confused and at a lost -- for ideas and a few bucks. But with this book, my questions were answered about my kitten's destructive habits, its finicky diet and its nervous behavior whenever strangers come into the home. It's a simple and very helpful book that gave me the solutions I needed.

  2. I have been a cat owner for over 7 years and there was alot in the book that I was amazed at. I never knew you could train your cat to speak and things. I was able to follow the guide and now my cat speaks! It took alot of treats tho!!!
Cant wait til her next book comes out.

  3. There is some very valuable advice on how to deal with your kitten. I immediately stopped playing the foot under the covers game with my kitten in order to discourage her from attacking my toes. There are sensible suggestions on how to say "no" to your kitten. And I'm anticipating a move in the next few months, and I think Moore's suggestion to rub a wet towel on your kitten and then rub the towel on the walls of the new house, so that she'll recognize her own scent, will work. On the other hand Moore thinks you ought to keep a first aid kit for one cat that would easily fill the needs of a family of five, she suggests cutting the handles off of paper bags so that kitty won't get herself strangled in them, she suggests making your own scratching post, and gives advice on how to make several toys that pretty much amount to ones you can buy or glorified versions of regular items (socks, a belt from an old robe) that are sure to bring out kitty playfulness without the elaborate Martha Stewart like construction. I was also confused by some of the eating strictures. One table says kittens can't eat dry food until 12 weeks, but the text has kittens eating dry food much earlier. Moore seems to make light of lactose intolerance, and among her kitty treats includes scrambled eggs with margarine and cottage cheese!!! And her kitty chowder seems more like a human treat to me. Counterpointing the interesting suggestion to give your kitten a small piece of raw tuna as an alternative or addition to brushing are chapters on command training, new age therapies and kitty massage. This is fine and cuddly, though I doubt I'll teach my kitten to do much more than sit, if that, and I'm not taking her for acupuncture. This primer is written not so much by a cat lover as a cat fanatic. (Though I admit that if you're going to be a fanatic, it may as well be of cats.) Still I prefer the more practical down to earth advice of Cats for Dummies, than some of the outlandish, occasionally preposterous, cat adulation techniques of the Kitten Owner's manual. Then again, I am going to try the kitty massage.

  4. I learned more than I ever thought possible regarding the care of cats. A terrific book, and my only regret is that it was not available some sixty years ago when I started my love affair with cats. I am doubly impressed that the Humane Society of the Unted States has endorsed this terrific owners manual. My hats off to Arden Moore along with thanks for writing such an informative book for all cat owners.

  5. My daughter recently adopted a kitten and this book was quite helpful to her in caring for the new pet. She had many questions that were answered and she constantly refers to it when situations arise that she needs assistance. This book is great for new parents of kittens.

5 comments about Getting Started: Clicker Training for Cats (Karen Pryor Clicker Books).
  1. I bought this book to help me understand how to train my very active Bengal. He needed to learn some manners, and we both needed a "common language" so we could communicate with each other. This book was specifically recommended to me by a cat behavior specialist in Seattle.
The book is an easy read, as it is not overly long or complicated. The techniques are simple to understand and are explained in clear terms.
The clicker training techniques were originally used to train marine mammals, like dolphins! I have seen the amazing things trained dolphins can do when trained, so I thought surely my cats can benefit from this technique as well.
The book suggests that you begin with a very simple little trick, which actually comes naturally to your cat. Once your cat figures out that by performing the trick he has trained YOU to give him a treat, the rest is a piece of cake! My cat enjoyed the training and it provided some nice bonding time for us. It was exciting to be able to clearly communicate with my cat and know he understood exactly what I was saying.
My Bengal can now (on command)"sit," "get down," "jump up," and walks on a leash. The training only took a few minutes a day, and in less than a week the communication between me and my cat had improved significantly.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand their cat, change or improve their cats' behavior, or anyone who wants a fun way to create a bond with their pet.

  2. I found this book very informative on the benefits of clicker training, how to get started with the cat, and how to train specific desirable behaviors using the clicker. The author also addresses times when clicker training can be used to eliminate bad behaviors, as well as other reasons they might be displaying undesirable behavior.

Although quite short and an easy read, the author managed to cover many topics of interest. From start to finish, the book is quite specific to cats and their peculiarities, including a number of amusing anecdotes. If anything, I could have used a little bit more of step-by-step procedural instructions on how to conduct the training.

I've just started training my very active part-Siamese kitten using the clicker. After only a couple of sessions, I can't speak to the long-term results, but the cat did learn to touch a stuffed animal for reward, and we are working on cues.

  3. This is a good book if you want the basics on your cats' mind and how it may work sometimes. The possible reasons your cat does what it does. You may find out some things that you never knew before.Happy Reading!

  4. taught cat in a matter of days to come to clicker very easy to follow and use

  5. This book is almost useless! I wish the author took her own advice and actually "got started" with the training instruction. This book is filled with antedotes and the author blowing her own horn. The only reason this book did not receive one star is because it can be used to give the reader a few ideas of what clicker training can do. That's it. That's all this book is good for. I do not advise purchasing this book.

Buy Cat Training in 10 Minutes instead. You won't regret it!

5 comments about Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health (P).
  1. This book was highly recommended as I began my search for evidence based information on raw feeding. As a veterinarian I found the book to be sorely lacking in solid, useful information and instead found much of the same hype and extreme thought that usually turns people off of raw feeding. I wanted to learn more objectively how raw truly promotes health but instead had to read page after page about how ignorant many vets are with regard to pet nutrition and how the pet food companies all want to kill our pets and profit from it. While both of those thoughts may or may not be true, this was not the reason I chose this book. I thought a book written by an alternative minded veterinarian would help me learn the benefits of raw feeding for clients. This book did not help me begin to learn raw feeding for my own pets, let alone clients.

  2. For those who have more time to read about raw feeding, this is your book. Dr. Lonsdale's book "Work Wonders" (in my previous review) is great for shorter reading. Since I have owned dogs all my life, I have also lost many to cancer and other related illnesses. With my new dog, I am trying raw feeding and reading all that I can about it. It's different and takes time getting the right diet and what agrees with her. I believe in being open minded, and this book really opens the mind.

  3. I just wanted to take a second to write a little review. No not one of those big reviews that yells "give me all the attention, I'm the best reviewer out here!"

But a lil small review that covers some of the things some people have spoken about and what not.

First some say this book seemingly is all about the author, Tom Londsdale. Ok, the forward, preface, and even chapter 1 is about him and the industry, but then he goes in to great detail about dental care, how artificial dog foods damage the teeth and so forth and so forth.

Some say it's hard to follow, well, I'll admit at times it is. It's a book of detailed reasons of why to go on the raw diet. It's not a recipe book, it's a good book to give you an idea about the raw diet, and frankly for the raw diet you dont need a recipe book! What's so hard about giving a raw chicken?

So I give this 4 stars, because it is a good book, however it can be a bit boring at times.

I just ordered "give your dog a bone" how I look forward to reading that!

  4. This book is a helpful guide for those discussing a RAW diet with their vet. Lonsdale provides an in depth account of what he's seen as a doctor of veterinary medicine. The book was much easier to read than some other books related to this topic. We used this book as a companion when discussing our dogs' health with our veterinarian. She found the information useful and I believe that is a compliment to the book. If not for making the choice to switch to RAW, it will have you asking your vet more questions about your pet's healthcare.

  5. Vets are good for medical stuff. I use them for drawing blood, running blood tests and prescribing medication when needed. Other than that, I would disregard anything a regular vet has to say about both animal nutrition and animal psychology*. Vets are brainwashed by these food companies when they are in vet school to push their unhealthy (but profitable) foods. There is a reason this author had to fight so hard to get his ideas out there.
Dogs survived thousands of years without bagged kibble, doing guess what? Eating Raw Meaty Bones. This book is such an eye-opener to something that should really be just simple common sense. Dogs are meant to eat MEAT, not corn meal, wheat or high-fructose corn syrup. Cats need meat even more so.
The DAY we changed our dogs over to eating Raw Meaty Bones, we noticed an astonishing difference. They are healthier and happier because they are doing what dogs should do!
READ this book, take the little bit of extra time to FOLLOW it and you will be rewarded 1000x over by your animals.
*My husband has been involved in animal training for years and follows something close to Cesar Millan's approach. So as far as dog psychology goes, if you can't hire my husband, read Cesar's book and watch the Dog Whisperer!!

5 comments about How to Toilet-Train Your Cat: 21 Days to a Litter-Free Home.
  1. Well, the book got made, and I bought it. Maybe I'm the dumb one!

We are still (months later) trying, as we really want to eliminate the litter, but have had to research other books and the internet for more, MUCH more info. This author doesn't even offer info for more questions. It's as if he's covered every possible scenario in the world, now it's up to you, the reader, to do it.

All you have to do is read the other reviews of this book to see that he's left out A LOT of possibilities. The reader is left to his own devices to fill in the numerous blanks. And as much time and energy as it takes, I find it almost impossible to believe the author has spent time training his friends' cats, too. It is time consuming, messy, and so far, extremely frustrating for both me and my cat.

We have followed, word for word, every instruction in the book, and have still been unsuccessful. The Saran Wrap? Bad idea - the cat falls through, every time (even with heavy duty wrap & very light Siamese cat ) which causes MUCH consternation on the part of the cat. We finally rig it so he can go again - he'll go, but doesn't like it. He has to be contained in the bathroom, and even still, will go on the floor rather than in the pot.

The pace of the training is entirely too fast, and offers no other options. Note to publisher: if you reprint this book, it needs some serious revisions.

  2. I bought this book recently after being fed up with cleaning the cat box, stepping on litter that had fallen out, and lugging a ginormous amount of litter up stairs.
The majority (2/3) of this book is about cat behavior, even to what your cat's meows mean. In essence, why cats do what they do and how they have the potential to be toilet trained.
I did more research on the internet before I began Kunkel's method. His method, for me at least, would involve more money being spent than I was inclined to spend (new box that fit the size specifications, undeoderized litter to wean my cats off of the deoderized kind, etc.). Plus, his last few steps involve saran wrap and tape that goes over the bowl of the toilet. In other words, I feel there is a lot of potential for psychological damage for the cat - and maybe the owner, too!
Instead, I purchased a CITIKITTY (www.citikitty.com). My cats used it immediately - 20 minutes out of the box - and I am highly satisfied with the results so far. It is filled with litter and fits over the bowl of the toilet, under the seat. It is durable enough that the cats can stand in it and it is easy enough to take off when I need to use the toilet (no adhesives or other mess). A hole is made in the center that gradually gets larger so that the cat is forced to stand on the seat itself.
Toilet training your cat is an exercise in classical conditioning, whatever methodology you use. Go slow and with the pace of your cat. Good luck!

  3. Most of the book contains information about how to litter train a kitten, but the last 20ish pages are the key. Our cat, Fenway, was not successful in just 21 days and required the alternate method. But, we are litter free now and have been for about two weeks. Plus, we really didn't need to buy anything new for this book. We had everything on hand. It was a bit annoying at the plastic wrap time as we had to leave our apartment to find another toilet. It would be nice if it had other chapters such as "Adding a second cat to your house" and "Moving to a new home." Check out this blog for photos of our Fenway in action--baggypantsandbravado.blogspot.c0m.

  4. The book was very clear and the steps are easy. My cats started off following right along, However I didn't follow the directions exactly & did have a set back. I'm looking forward to trying again & hopefull that it will work this time. I would advise anyone trying this method to make sure the rest of their house is clean though. If your cat does hit a point where they decide to resist the training, that fresh pile of clean laundry seems to be a favorite site for them to express their irritation at the new change to their lives.

  5. i just bought this book last night and i read it cover to cover. granted i already did a few hours of preliminary research on cat toilet training methods and available training products online, the book was overly simplistic and i was appalled by some of the methods the author suggests.

first of all, only 33 pages of the book are actually dedicated to the training process itself which is 27% of the book. the majority of the remaining pages covers litter box training, a subject that i can probably safely assume that most of us have already addressed. the author does not address questions related to correct toilet seat posture, training multiple cats, getting your cat to use other toilets, and traveling with your cat.

the 33 pages of applicable material covers a 21 day process: the first 16 days consist of moving the litter box to the bathroom (1 day), gradually elevating the litter box to toilet seat height (12 days),and gradually moving the litter box from the stack of newspapers directly onto the toilet seat (3 days). on the 17th day, the author instructs you to remove the litter box altogether and give your cat the next 4 days to use the toilet seat itself. equipment needed? just heavy duty plastic wrap, adhesive tape, and newspapers. wow! lift the toilet seat, take a sheet of plastic wrap and attach the plastic across the toilet's porcelain rim leaving a slight indention in the middle. fill the middle with a cup of kitty litter and lower the toilet seat. the last 3 days instruct us to cut a small hole and then larger holes each day in the middle of the plastic wrap while at the same time using less and less kitty litter. on day 20, voila, get rid of the plastic wrap and litter! day 21, congratulate yourself. so in actuality, this is a 20 day training process.

the author's instructions are much too simplistic and give more weight to the height adjustment the cat will have to make (jumping up to use the bathroom) than the changes associated with posture and balance on the toilet seat, the removal of kitty litter, and the water in the toilet being exposed as the barrier disappears. most importantly, i'd like to know how many cats the author has actually toilet trained using his methods b/c i don't understand how heavy duty plastic wrap and adhesive tape can support the weight of anything larger than a 3 lb kitten. if the cat doesn't feel safe on the training contraption, it is probably going to refuse to use it. if the cat were to actually fall in, i'm pretty sure the cat will rebel against any other attempts at toilet training.

also, unless you have a spare bathroom, you may give up on toilet training before the cat. i imagine it will get really annoying removing, repositioning, and reattaching flimsy plastic wrap to your toilet everytime someone in the household needs to use it. or reinstalling and cutting holes in plastic wrap each time the cat soils the plastic wrap. i suggest buying one of the commercially available toilet training plastic pans, such as citikitty or litter kwitter, or just finding a metal bowl with the same diameter as the inside of your toilet bowl or aluminum baking pan that will sit securely under the toilet seat.

in all fairness, the book does address two topics that were completely new to me. in the first, the author states that you should not even attempt to train an unaltered cat. however, he does not address why this is true. secondly, he suggests that many cats can be "hooked" on the smell of chemically treated litter, so they should be slowly weaned off the scent by mixing the old litter with a new unscented (flushable) version.

i bought this book at half price books for $2.98. it wasn't even worth that.

  1. Some of her methods are fine for a cat behaviorist or someone who has plenty of time (and no job) to spend catering to their kitty. I am a busy person who needs to socialize a rather "psycho" kitty to my already established one cat household. It has not gone well and if I practiced what this lady preaches I would be at this for years. It's a bit frustrating. Also I do not have a local cat behaviorist in my area to consult and my vet is more of the mind of - well just let the cats figure it out. I am still looking for advice. She seems dead set against using drug therapy on high-strung cats but if you cannot even handle the cat how can you practice all of these great techniques?

5 comments about How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want.
  1. If Warren Eckstein had chosen to market this book as a collection of entertaining pet anecdotes and essays, I would have no problem giving it five stars.

However, he's attempting to pass this book off as a step-by-step animal training guide, which it is not.

I found it unstructured and impractical in terms of how to physically train a cat to do anything; perhaps the advice was hidden among the inane Kittyspeak, in which Eckstein insisted on writing? It's good that he understands that cats are intelligent and need to have their attention engaged so they don't becoming bored furniture fungus. Unfortunately he doesn't get that many readers are the same way. Both cats and humans of a bookish bent will end up languishing in their chairs and reading Nietzsche when continually addressed like four-year old children -- i.e. bored out of their skulls.

This book offers little in the way of research or references to support his perspective on animal training. There is no bibliography, and in fact, he often claims that his beliefs are to the contrary of most trainers' experience or scientific findings.

For example, he believes that cats only purr when happy, despite the fact that studies have shown the purr's frequency helps to mend broken bones (which is why cats also purr when stressed). He disses behavioral theory in such an off-hand way that I wonder if he knows who BF Skinner is at all, and that numerous modern trainers utilize the methods of positive reinforcement (for both animal and human subjects) with excellent results.

Karen Pryor's book "Don't Shoot The Dog!" was a far more insightful, contructive and beneficial read in terms of training my cat (as well as dealing with animals and people in general). I would recommend it over this ball of fluff any day.

  2. I found this book uninformative and a waste of money. I'm sorry that I din't buy a used book. This book was too cute with too many cute stories. I was more interested in learning about cat behavioral problems and how to solve them. I lost patience with this book. A very silly book.

  3. Hmmmm... this book was a little too warm and fuzzy for me, and my cats still don't do what I want them to do. I like to call them my kitties of mass destruction.

I know the above statement doesn't really offer any constructive criticism so let me see if I can put into words what I didn't like about this book. Warren and Fay seem to be very caring and compassionate animal lovers but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of practical advice regarding getting cats to do what you want.

There were however, lots of cute stories about their animals sprinkled with a bit of advice - most of which I'd already heard. It was a nice read if you like animals (which I do) but not much help in the whole "getting them to do what you want" area.

  4. I had a hard time getting past the author's mania for adorable little furballs. Here's an example: "Are your well-deserved vacations spoiled because you just can't cope with the anxiety of leaving behind the little furball?". Those of you who answer yes will probably enjoy reading the book from cover to cover. Everyone else will do better looking up topics of interest, or reading a different book altogether. Having said that, there is some good information here, and an important message that you will be a better cat owner if you try to understand the cat's perspective. I suggest reading the Publishers Weekly review quoted by Amazon, because that nails it.

  5. I found this book to be a bit over the top. The authors suggest extreme measures for control of undesirable cat behaviors requiring strict attention to detail. I love my rescue kitten dearly who is 5 months old now, but some ideas offered in this book seem unrealistic for me. I do believe the authors have the best interest of the cat in their strategies; however, I think some of the methods require impossible amounts of time. For those of us who are very disciplined, go for it!

5 comments about Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat--Not a Sour Puss.
  1. It's a crazy title but once you get into reading it, fits perfectly. We gave a kitten to my mother and noticed it was starting to rule the household and develop bad habits. "Think Like A Cat" to the rescue. It opened our eyes to the cause and the problems were nipped in the bud. Who's boss? Not the cat.

  2. This book is an excellent tool for the novice or expert cat owner. I've read this book from cover to cover and find it a useful reference tool whenever I'm unsure of how to deal with a situation with my cat. It covers issues such as, how to introduce a second cat to the family, preparing kitty for a new baby, moving day, how to remedy behavior problems, etc, etc. I personally have purchased multiple copies of this book to give to friends and family with cats. Highly recommended.

  3. This book was written very well.It is one of those books to keep on the bedside table as you will always refer to it. I have been looking after cats for 15 years now and this book still managed to teach me a few new things. A great book both for beginners to experts!

  4. In general it was alright. But some of her ideas were too bizarre. You can't teach a cat to come! And her idea of giving cat treats to get them to learn new things? Okay but if you have a cat who needs to lose weight that is not the best thing to be encouraging. Cats are not children. You can't reward them and then decide one day not to anymore. Also, the idea that if you don't play everyday with your cat that you are going to somehow ruin them? Please. I don't play with my cat every day and he is just fine. Also the idea that you have to give your cat the "Right" toys? They are CATS, not children. My cat has several "Inanimate" toys and he doesn't seem bored. Plus many of these interactive toys are not cheap and the fishing rod type toys break.
For the person who said cats belong outside? Maybe so.But I live in an apartment and letting my cat outdoors is out of the questions.
I skipped many parts of the book because my cat does not have those issues. And as for the litter box? I own an automatic one which she seems to frown on and I love it. It is so much easier to clean. If my cat has any problems I can still tell.
Shoe me a cat that can learn to sit and stay and I will show you a frog who can talk!

  5. This book is a most excellent book for new kitty parents, and also has info useful for old kitty pros. I currently care for 7 cats, and have been owned by cats for quite some time now, but I've learned a lot from Pam's books. My first was Psycho Kitty.

While I was a volunteer with our local humane society I always recommended "Think Like A Cat" to first time kitty adopters. It has all the prerequisite instructions for those who know nothing about cats and are about to be owned by their first kitty...or even the second or third...

  1. I purchased this book and another entitled "Getting Started: Clicker Training for Cats". The latter is absolutely useless! It is filled with antedotes and very little to almost no instruction. What a waste. "10 mintues" is the only book you need to clicker train your feline. My very energetic kitten has responded almost instantly to clicker training. It gives her something to do and think about, as well as use all the excess energy! After three 10 minute sessions my kitten targets, comes, sits, and twirls, as well as taking treats from my hand politely. What more can I say? Buy this book!

  2. I'm a HUGE fan of this book. It has straightforward, easy-to-follow instructions with clear illustrations, and it really works! I'm working my way up to the bigger things (like walking on a leash), but so far, with only 5-10 minutes of "training" a day, my cat has quickly picked up both the "come" and the "sit" commands. This book suggests particular hand signals to pair with the voice commands (which the pictures clarify) and they REALLY seem to make a difference. My kitty even responds to the hand signals alone now, which is great. But to pick up these behaviors in a day or two is truly impressive! I can't get over how fast he's learning all these things, and all credit goes to the book. It's a great resource for training your cat, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

  3. I like this book for it's teaching methods concerning positive techniques, for example, teaching a cat to do tricks. It has good step by step instructions for novice cat trainers to use. But the book falls far short in the section called "Correcting Improper Behavior." The author almost seems to assume that you'll be present, for example, every time kitty jumps on the counter, & that's just not going to be the case for most people, especially working people. The author suggests correcting improper behaviors by hissing at your cat while using a water pistol. I've tried it, & it doesn't work. Part of the problem is that when you see your cat doing something undesirable, you have to go & get the water pistol. By that time, the cat's finished with the behavior & it's too late to follow the procedure. I don't tend to walk around the house with a water pistol in my hand or pocket all day long, & many times, kitty silently surprises me with what he's doing. Another option is to keep a water pistol in every room, also not practical! In addition, many people want to buy a book such as this one to halt improper behaviors, & there are very few such behaviors covered in this book. So for the positive approaches, it's a good book, but it's not sufficient for dealing with improper behaviors.

  4. Don't know what else to do with your cat besides petting and playing a game catch the string or ball? Have fun, train your cat.

I just got this book and already my cat and I have spent time doing the beginning tricks and she's loving it! She bit my finger though trying to get the treat, so I suggest you follow the book and make yourself a training spoon. As for getting a 'clicker' I haven't found a good reason to use it. (After trying the 'come here' command successfully several times without the clicker, I tried it with the clicker and the sound scared my cat--maybe we'll work on it...)

Good info in this book--it would be nice if they can make a cat training DVD. It's nice to see it working.

  5. Not sure if it worked in 10 minutes but did have some ideas to try. Wouldnt be the first book I would buy on training but worth a shot if other ideas fail.
