1 comments about Longhaired Cats: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual.
- The longhaired "Felis domesticus," or house cat, is a wonderful animal companion. This little book written by a top breeder of longhairs (and who is married to a veterinarian) is enormously useful for people new to longhaired cats. I generally agree with the author on most issues (although I think more behavior is breed-linked than she does), and find this book most useful in the pre-cat ownership stage. She has an excellent section on considerations necessary before adopting a new cat.
Her advice and information is presented in an easy to understand manner, but most of this will be known by experienced cat owners already. People who have never owned a cat before (and particularly those considering a Persian or other longhaired cat) should definitely read this book. If you have had cats for a while, there is probably little new information to be learned here, although many of the illustrations are nice. One key to take away from this book is that while longhairs may look more glamorous than shorthair cats, the upkeep on a longhaired cat is significantly greater, particularly in the grooming department. Having said that, I think they are totally worth the extra effort.
She discusses longhairs and breeds (I am partial to neutered male Persians and Maine Coons myself), but emphasizes that all cats are individuals with unique personalities. I agree with her, but want to add my own comment on top of hers: if you want a pet, you will gain nothing by having a pedigreed cat (in fact they may be less healthy because of greater inbreeding, though not necessarily). Having said that, please consider rescuing a cat from your local shelter. If you want to show or breed the cat, she gives some basic information on this as well.
Cats make wonderful companions, and I highly recommend this book for those interested in getting their first cat, while more experienced cat owners can probably safely skip it, although it still makes a nice reference.

- Ms. Mays knows her Persian cats and shows it in this extrodinary work. A great book and a must have for all Persian Cat Owners.
- I found this book very helpful. I am a fairly new Persian Cat owner and found that I use this book alot as a reference. As all of us Persian Cat owners know there is alot of maintenance and understanding to take care of these very distinguished felines. Read this book and you will see most all of your curious questions will be answered.
- Persian Cats, by Marianne Mays did not live up to my expectations. The photographs are of extremely poor quality, very grainy at best. The lingo throughout the book is British, and somewhat hard to understand for an American. Apparently, the terms for certain cat colors and types are completely different in Britain. This makes it confusing. The spellings are also slightly different. Also the rules and regulations of their cat club are different than here. All in all, I was very disappointed in a confusing, poor quality, poorly written book.

- Got a new copy at a used book sale and read
it in one brief sitting. I strongly suggest that it is a must to own this if you are an adult cat lover.
The line drawings are delightful and very well
done. I wish it could be reprinted as its content
is timeless. People may well have imagined
a cat thinks as the author believes they do
- Cricket the cat is a humourous, sophisticated and sometimes ironic cat who having lived the life of most cats, is contented to just sit and tell us about it.

- This delightful guide with its excellent full-color and black & white photographs contains all you need to know to care for your Persian/Longhair cat. It tells you about the race's background, the standards and the colors. The selection and care of a kitten are dealth with in detail, and so are diet, training, bathing and grooming. The section on health is quite extensive - all major and minor diseases and their treatment are discussed. A chapter is devoted to breeding and raising kittens and the last section deals with showing your Persian. It was interesting to learn that the Persian of today is the result of long-ago crossings of two similar breeds of long-haired cats - the Angora and the original Persian. The Angora as a breed is extinct - Longhair or Persian is the correct name. Some of the photographs are functional, demonstrating how to e.g. comb and brush your cat, handfeeding with doll's bottles or showing scratching posts, harnesses, carrying cases and administering medications. Although this is an old edition of Ramsdale's book, it is very thorough and still useful to the cat owner or prospective cat owner. The cats and kittens in the photographs are cuddly and gorgeous.
