  1. This is one of the most factual books about Manx I've found. Very accurate and helpful. Great book and a great value.

  2. I have bred and shown Manx cats for the past 11 years and this is the only book that I know of that is completely factual about the breed. There is a lot of printed matter on the breed which is either misleading or downright wrong. This book gives a new owner or prospective owner a good idea of what to expect from a Manx cat. The pictures are not up to the standard of the writing (one picture is of a Japenese Bobtail), but that certainly doesn't ruin the book. It is not so expensive that it is prohibitive as a research source while being attractive enough to add to your library of cat books. I think it is a book that all Manx owners could benefit from owning and I recommend it to anyone who adopts one of my kittens/cats.

  3. Karen Commings has thoroughly researched and compiled an excellent "owner's manual" for the first-time Manx owner. Through contacting breeders and asking health, behaviour, and care questions, she has prepared a book which any Manx breeder (of which I am one) is confident to give to a new kitten purchaser and feel good about it. Despite an unfortunate photo mixup with one picture, Karen's book contains accurate and dependable information about the breed. Anyone considering buying a Manx or who has already purchased one will find the book informative and fun (did I mention, it's also a good read!).

  4. This book gave good general info on cats, but not much, in particular, for Manx's. I was looking for details on their elimination problems due to lack of tail, and how to deal with it as far as special diets, etc. But, the possibility of elimination problems weren't even addressed in this book.

  1. As a breeder of Turkish Angoras for 8 years, I am thrilled to see our breed finally has a book of its own. It is icing on the cake to find that the book is accurate, informative and and very helpful to anyone interested in being owned by a Turkish Angora. I recommend it highly

  2. "Turkish Angora Cats : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training" (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) by Karen Leigh Davis, is the most accurate and informative book I have seen on my breed. The Turkish Angora cat suffers from much published misinformation, and I opened the pages of my book with intrepidation, only to find that it is wonderfully written and illustrated, and that it is truely an authoritative work on the subject. The book is thorough, and very entertaining and enjoyable to read. Congratulations to the author, the editor, and the publisher, on a job well done!

  3. It is a real joy to find this excellent book about this rarebreed of cat. It is a must for those that are owned by - orcontemplate the beauty of - the Turkish Angora.

  4. Given that it's the only book out there that details the Turkish Angora, it's worth picking up. However, I like its honesty in the demeanor of the animals, and it gives good tips for anyone who is merely an owner all the way up to an exhibitor. Great photos, too!

  1. The book has usefull information, for example the steps you should follow in washing your dog or cat, but is very vague in the cuts for specific breeds. This book is perfect as an introduction for a more complete guide to grooming pets.

  2. I was looking for a book to give grooming and clipping information that I could use on my mixed breed dog. This book does include some information on those subjects (maybe 20 pages on clipping) but not enough for me to feel comfortable clipping my dog.

The majority of this book (over 40 pages) is devoted to skin disorders and how to treat them. Perhaps this will be useful later but it was not really what I was looking for.

  1. Though this book proved to be helpful when we first bought our new crean point, what struck me is that it doesn't discuss most of the details of cat owning nor does it really give detailed descriptions of illness. We had never had a cat before. How would we know if the darned thing is sick when we bring it home? This book was supposed to help with that, but it only skims illnesses in kittens and cats and spends most of the time discussing showing your new Himalayan. Anyone reading this would be reading it for help on training, diet suggestions and just basic "Cats for Dummies" sort of stuff. While it does offer excellent photos of rare cats and features extra glossy pages making it fun to flip through, it needs more of a point. So Himalayans throw up when they eat grass, any cat will. tell me something I wouldn't know that is unique to long haired or Himalayan cats and kittens, like the watery eyes and constant infections. How to deal with fleas and ticks and how to tell worms would have been nice if they were just doing a a generalized book, but in most aspects you know nothing more on completing this than you did before. It will probably confuse you and make you wonder "Why did they even bother?"

  2. everything you need to know is here.

  1. Although I haven't extensively read this book, a copy was shown to me by a cat breeder. I looked up areas that I know are problems for cat owners. My business is grooming cats, and clients always ask the same questions; this book uses many of the techniques that I have used in 9 yrs of grooming cats. nice pictures, too!

  2. I was extremely disappointed when I got this book, especially considering all the high marks from groomers it received. The drawings (no photo references) are generally pointless and unprofessional. The grooming information is weak and the handling info is basically non-existent. From the viewpoint of a cat lover/owner and cat rescue volunteer, the author should stick to dogs. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cat grooming guide available at the moment. However, I suggest looking into some good cat behavior books (such as "The cat who cried for help" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman (he also wrote a wonderful book on canine behavior, "The dog who loved too much") or "PetSpeak: Share Your Pet's Secret Language" by the editors of Pets) to help with cat handling. Whether you're a pet owner or professional groomer, knowing how the cat is going to react is vital for your's and the cat's safety.

  3. I bought the book because I'm wanting to groom my own cats and there's nothing else specific on grooming cats. I don't agree with one reviewer's critique on the artwork, it's just as informative as photos, if not more so and if you appreciate art you'll enjoy the humor that the artist expresses. I think the book's information is very good, I'm sure my cats will not enjoy what I'm going to do to them though.

  1. Very informing book. I bought this before I got my persian to help me with the purchase. Beautiful pics. Told me what to look for in purchasing and about breeding.

  2. The only reason this book deserved a three-star rating is for the nice photography and the basic information. If you know nothing about Persians, and have never had one, then whatever you learn is a plus and you would probably benefit from this book. However, if you are experienced with Persians, you will probably find little here that you do not already know, or have not already read in other general cat care books. Granted, many cat breeds have some distinct characteristics, such as the tendancy of some Persians' eyes to "tear and run," and the extra grooming requirements necessary not only for Persians but for any long-haired cat. It is what you might call "Lesson 101 in Persian Education."

  3. I think this book is a great Help to anyone thinking of purchasing a Persian.

It covers many, many aspects of the Persian breed. And the information is quite valuable.

I am a breeder of Persions.
I highly recommend this book !

  1. I did not notice these were miniature books only 4" by 4", you can't see any of the paintings they are too small.

  2. I bought this work on the way to a party a few years ago.. It became an instant hit. People who were shy and didnt know anyone, bored children, happy party people, everyone took a few minutes to pore through this book, talk about it to their neighbors.. and debate which cats they liked best, and what they they thought of the idea of cat painting.

A splendid, funny, thought provoking book, that will forever cahnge the way you look at cats.

  3. (As a cat lover) I wish my cat could look at this book. I am sure he would be entertained!! The enhancement of a beautiful animal is much appreciated. I love it when children look at this book. Their comments are wonderful.

  4. I don't know what I was expecting in this book. I had seen a couple of the pictures out of context and was intrigued by the paint jobs on these cats. My first disappointment in the book came when I opened the package and discovered just how tiny this book was. I had not paid attention to the size listed on Amazon and was very upset that the book was so tiny and the pictures so small. As I flipped through the book, the stories behind each paint job were entertaining. A good number of the paint jobs began to disturb me in their weirdness. Some of the cats were admittedly beautiful enhanced with "naturalistic" paint jobs, but others were quite humiliating and I cannot fathom why someone would want their cats painted in a humiliating way. I have not opened the book since zipping through it the first one or two times and would hesitate at recommending it to a true cat lover.

About a week after posting the above review, I found out that the cat paintings in this book were likely computer generated (check out snopes). If that is true then even the stories behind the paint jobs are a farce. Yet another reason not to bother buying this book.

  5. Buy this book and share with all your friends- the cat painted as a showgirl got a great laugh here at work.
