  1. I got this book prior to our Exotic Shorthair kitten. It has great information, it's easy to read and has Great pictures. Just a word of caution, The Guide to Owning an Exotic Shorthair Cat (The Guide to Owning) by Karen Commings [Paperback] has the same information inside the book, the cover is just different. I know because I ordered both, but I like this one better, it's hardback.

  1. An excellent introduction to this lovely breed. This book is worth buying just for the quality photos of the gorgeous cats!

  2. This book was very helpful as a new owner of an Exotic kitten, especially the sections on grooming and nail clipping. The illustrations were especially helpful and well done. For the price, a very good book.

  1. This is a great book for cat fans, but especially for those who own or enjoy Exotic Shorthairs. The photos are fantastic and are incredibly glossy and colorful. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the printing and the stock that this book is printed on- it made my a great Christmas present for my wife. The reading was entertaining and factual, but the real selling point for this book is the photos.

  2. This is a Great Book with Great Pictures. It is easy to read and understand. However.. Beware..The other book that Amazon offers, Exotic Shorthair Cat (Popular Cat Library) by Karen Cummings [Library Binding]is the same as this one, the cover is just different. This book is paperback and the other is hardback and the 2 covers have different pictures. I know because I ordered both thinking I was getting 2 different books. Don't make the same mistake I did. It's just a personal preference, paperback or hardback??

  1. Fabulous book.
Exactly what I was interested in hearing. This book sheds light on exotic cats and the people who love them.
It was not what I was expecting.
I was expecting cute stories and funny happenings.
What I got was an emotion packed set of stories that made me laugh out loud, cry with joy, sit on the edge of my seat, cry with understanding and smile with the comfort of a purr.
I've given out many of these books as gifts and plan to give out more!

  2. After reading this book,I became aware that ,indeed, there are responsible private exotic cat owners in this country, willing to share their experiences, dedication to the exotic cat, knowledge and education they have requried.
Some stories are sad, some funny but overall, show that private ownership of an exotic cat is a lifetime committment and one to be taken seriously.

  3. I found this book to show the true dedication, experience and committment that responsible exotic cat private owners are willing to have to give their life to the exotic cat.Shows owning an exotic cat through proper channels can be done and is more than a rewarding lifetime partnership between the responsible private owner and the exotic cat.

  4. This book is educational and enlightening. No amount of readings will make is dull and I loved the communication beween thse owners and their cats.
Lucky animals and lucky people to have found each other and lucky are we to get to look inside their lives.

  5. What a wonderful compilation of educational and heartwarming stories! I have four domestic housecats myself and have oftentimes wondered what similarities or differences they might share with their close cousins. NOW I KNOW! What strikes me the most throughout the material is the responsibilty displayed by the lucky folks who own or shall I say are owned by these wonderful cats. I find it compelling that such a special relationship can evolve from these wild cats. My domestics are only a cathair away from them evolutionary wise and it was refreshing to see the same feelings that I have for mine expressed through these admirable small exotic feline owners. Kudos and I truly hope to see more future material of this nature. Thanks for the valuable product!

  1. If you love big cats like I do this is the ultimate book. Filled with striking photographs and heart-wrenching-yet-uplifting stories, I was flooded with emotion as I read. Lots of emotions. This is not an easy read, especially when confronted with stories of people abusing these majectic animals or forcing them to travel en masse in the back of a Volkswagon van... but these lions, tigers, cheetahs, panthers and lynx have all been very fortunate to be part of this book. The photos are as beautiful as they are intimate and it's like the photographer has actually captured a tiny bit of each cat's personality. BUY THIS BOOK.

  2. The book does the Exotic Feline Rescue Center justice. Stephen has captured the animals through wonderful photography. My granddaughter loved the center and enjoys the book.

  3. This is a wonderful overview of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. Stephen McCloud has obviously fallen in love with the cats at the center and it shows. There are SO many animals that have fallen victim to the exotic pet trade...the Feline Rescue Center provides a safe haven for some of the lucky ones, that now call it home. This book provides an intimate look at some of the rescues living at the center and allows the reader to look at the cats on a more personal level. The exotic pet trade is a HUGE problem in our world today and only with the help of people like Mr. McCloud educating people through photographs and information on their plight, will more people get involved and raise the necessary funds to end the vicious cycle. Wild animals belong in the WILD, not behind bars or in canned hunts for trophies. The Exotic Feline Rescue Center provides as close to a natural environment that is able for these poor cats forced to live in captivity. Stephen McCloud does a wonderful job with stories backed up by fabulous pictures.

  4. I've been getting more aware of the plight of abandoned, neglected and abused big cats in the last year. It's an issue that deserves more attention and support. McCloud's photos prove a picture is worth a thousand words over and over. These big cats, being cats, are proud, dignified and graceful even in their captive plight. And they are the lucky ones! This book is a wonderful way of getting the message out. There are more of his photos you can link to from the ERFC website: www.exoticfelinerescuecenter.org too. Many of those beg for yet another book!
This book will bring you the mixed feelings of awe at the cats beauty and sorrow for what we humans have done to them.

  5. This is the most heart-warming and beautiful book! Tugs at your heart strings while filling you with love, joy, compassion, tenderness and respect. Your heart just opens right up as you feel for these magnificent creatures. I was afraid to read this book at first. Thought that it would hurt too much. I visited EFRC's website online, fell in love with each featured feline and then read their histories. My family visited the facility (Exotic Feline Rescue Center) last year and it was one of the most powerful, touching and profound experiences of my life. I bought the book there and read it in the car all the way home from Indiana to North Carolina!

The book is well written and the pictures are beautiful. Gift yourself this book.

  1. This indispensable aid for caretakers and owners of small animals is a miniature encyclopedia chock full of facts, advice, and instruction on the care and feeding of dogs, cats, birds, and other pets. With chapters on everything from proper housing and daily nurturing of your pets, to emergency medicine and disease symptoms, this book has a section for just about everything you may encounter in pet ownership and animal care. The book even covers pets that many folks won't take to a vet -- rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and reptiles. If you learn even one thing from the book that avoids a costly veterinary visit, the book has already paid for itself. This guide is especially helpful for people with more than one type of animal -- for instance, I have cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and rats. Instead of shelling out mega-bucks for 5 separate books, I was able to locate all the information I need in a single book. While most pet owners won't read the entire book at the time of purchase, that's one way to approach the wealth of information it offers. On the other hand, it's a terrific manual to have on hand, just in case, for the times when you'll need it. Much like a home first aid kit, this is a tool all pet owners should have in their homes.

  2. This book is great for veterinary students as well as anyone with animals. Very informative and easy to understand. First Aid section in back! I loved this book, it even told me the right way to hold my parakeet.

3 comments about Careers With Animals: Exploring Occupations Involving Dogs, Horses, Cats, Birds, Wildlife, And Exotics.
  1. Readers who are animal lovers and who dream of working with animals often stop at the idea of being a vet: in actuality, there's so much more available, as Careers With Animals: Exploring Occupations Involving Dogs, Horses, Cats, Birds, Wildlife And Exotics demonstrates. Career options range from breeding and treating animals to being a show judge or working for a zoo or aquarium. An organization by animal type - marine, horses, birds, wild animals - makes it easy to hone in more specifically to careers with particular types of animals. Very highly recommended.

  2. Ellen Shenk, author of Outdoor Careers, follows up with Careers With Animals, and it is every bit as accessible and readable. All the lists and specific information you will need for planning and executing your search are here--sources, possibilities, definitions, salary ranges. But aside from the practical, the author shines her best light: she makes you think about intangibles--your suitability, your personality, the realities you might encounter with your choice, and the like. As with Outdoor Careers, she includes interviews with "real people" who give their first-person accounts of their everyday vocational experiences.

  3. I was acutely made aware of how "careers with animals" is a different concept to "careers for those who *love* animals". The section on farming (which includes veal production) describes its practices so benignly - with no acknowledgement of the horrendous cruelties these poor animals endure. I tossed the book aside in disappointment and disgust. There may well be some useful information in the other sections but the book was already tainted for me. My recommendation is that if you truly care about the welfare of animals you should look elsewhere.
