5 comments about Dangerous Beauty.
  1. This movie has everything, quick wit, humor, sword play, war, death, destruction, floggings and best of all true love. My original copy of this movie was lost and I searched the internet high and low... and of course AMAZON had it.

  2. This movie is fantastic. It has a wonderful love story, the costumes and settings are beautiful and the fictional history is not far from fact.

  3. Dangerous Beauty is in my top 50 of all time favorites. It has something for everyone - romance, humor, history - and is underscored by a lovely soundtrack. The characters are well cast. My daughter did a term paper on Veronica Franco and the role of courtesans and women in the 16th century after seeing this. I heartily recommend this little known gem.

  4. I have 2 movies that I need to return and neither of them work for me...
I am not sure why they are defective and I will return them but I have not had time to go to the post office but they will be returned. Sad because I love the movie

  5. Great Movie, true story, However I only needed ONE copy, NOT TWO!!!!! I returned the 2nd movie and still have not been refunded. Please refund my account for the movie that was returned!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Amy

  1. This is one of the best movies and picniples of all time. If only 10% of people in the world followed it the impact would be incredible. Granparents,Parents Chidren anyone but several copies and send them on to others.

  2. Great movie, loved it!!! Maybe we should all try this pay it forward the world would be a much better place...I would advise you to get out some tissues while watching this movie!!! It arrived on time and in perfect condition.

  3. This is one of my absolute favourite movies! The story of how a young boy tries to change the world and make it a better place. Besides being a great movie, this story really has a message and it had a great impact on me. Buy this movie and it will grip your heart...

  4. If you could get past the swearing and the constant taking the Lord's name in vain the concept of Paying It Forward is wonderful. We do practice that in our home and Family. Every American citizen Paying It Forward would change the face/course of this Great Nation of ours. This is NOT a Family friendly movie at all because of the language and two bad scenes ... one in the beginning with dancers on poles in a bar setting and a bedroom scene. Shame on Amazon for billing this as a Family movie.

  5. This is a fantastic movie. My Granddaughter just loves it and that is
why I bought it. It is a Christmas Present for her.

5 comments about Everything Is Spiritual.
  1. Rob Bell has received a great deal of criticism in his career for a variety of reasons. Some might have some merit, but most come out a desire for him to be something he is not. He is not a world class Biblical Scholar; he is not the greatest theological mind; he is not a person that will champion conservative ideologies, nor liberal. If you desire any of these things from this man, do not buy his work for you will be disappointed.

But if you are looking for a thoughtful person engaging with faith, culture, and life, then you might have found someone that will really speak to you in a refreshing confession of Christian faith.

Rob Bell is a pastor with a heart for humanity. He is a person that desires to unite, rather than divide. He is a person who recognizes the burden of our society and addresses them in faithful ways and "Everything Is Spiritual" is a wonderful testimony of God at work within Humanity.

I was blessed to watch this. And I trust that those who have ears to hear will come away from this experience moved in profound ways.

  2. I just watched this video last night and was absolutely FLOORED. Rob Bell starts this lecture off with the famous Genesis 1 intro: "In the beginning..." and breaks down the original Hebrew text in a way that will give ANYONE (Christian or non-Christian alike) a new appreciation for the text. But he goes on to weave in physics and astronomical insight about the universe and the fine tuning of gravitational order (i made that phrase up i think...) and blows your mind with the WONDER of how the entire universe can be SOO perfectly tuned "just so" that life on earth can be sustained... you have to watch this! i come from a literature AND a mathematical background and was captivated. i don't care if you are a believer of God or not.. this will leave you THINKING, asking questions, wanting to discuss this stuff with your other nerdy friends... wanting to FIND OUT MORE about this God who breathed everything into order. -- Christiane Lucas

  3. Rob Bell has truly been blessed with the capability to speak with such confidence and intelligence without looking at a single note.
"Everything is Spirtual" is not like your NOOMA video. Its a lot longer. And the facts are astonishing. I loved it, and I recommend everyone get the chance to watch it!

  4. We saw Rob Bell "live" sharing this information with some of our youth group so when I found that it was available on DVD I immediately bought it! We gave them away as graduation gifts and watched it again and again as a group. Everything IS spiritual and Rob does a great job presenting truth as mind boggling as it is. PLEASE buy this and share it with young and old alike.

  5. Rob Bell hits this one out of the park. He's got the ability to use science, history and Biblical fact to drive the point home. A Great Buy!

5 comments about GoodFellas.
  1. This is the best of the best films in the contemporary gangster/Mafioso genre. I have watched it so many times that I think the FBI has put hidden cameras in my house and wiretapped my phones. Henry Hill WISHES that he looked as good as the young Ray Liotta. It's hard to watch Lorraine Bracco as the serious, but slightly neurotic, Dr. Jennifer Melfi on "The Sopranos" after repeatedly watching her flush tens of thousands of coke down the toilet. But the real star in this film is the psychotic Joe Pesci. There was no way of predicting what would set him off. I'm not going to give the surprises away here but, no matter how many times I watch the movie, I still get sucked in!!

  2. The Blu-ray really enhances the picture quality of the movie. I bought it primarily to see if the blu-ray was worth it on older movies, and I believe it is.

  3. The quintessential New York City mob film, in a class by itself, my only five-star review to date (and I'd give it more if I could). Based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, Martin Scorsese's brilliant masterpiece introduces us to Henry Hill, as enacted by Ray Liotta, a disarming, likeable sort who can never be initiated into the Mafia because he's only half Italian (his father is Irish). Nevertheless, the "boys" who hang out at the neighborhood cabstand have taken a liking to him and use him to run various errands. As he grows older, Henry forms a close association with Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and the violent, trigger-happy Tommy De Vito (played to the hilt by a terrifying Joe Pesci). This film has the audience in its grip beginning with the opening sequence and doesn't let go until it ends almost three hours later. Frank Vincent has a brief but memorable role as the ill-fated Billy Batts, and all of the supporting characters come across quite credibly. In my opinion, the only weak point in this film (if you can even call it that) was the casting of Paul Sorvino as the local mob boss. I felt he brought very little to his role. A much better choice (again, in my opinion) would have been someone like Robert Loggia. De Niro's performance is flawless, as usual, and Pesci dominates every scene he's in (he won a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). "GoodFellas" was released in December, 1990, nearly eighteen years ago, and, as far as I'm concerned, there isn't a single movie produced before or since which even begins to approach its cinematic perfection.

  4. Great cast, one of the best mobster movies ever made. Would reccommend this for every one.

  5. Very good price, great communication and super fast delivery. I highly recommend the product and dealer.

5 comments about Mr. Holland's Opus.
  1. I must confess that before writing this review, I read some of the lower-rated reviews first. It seems that the common complaint is that it's over-sentimental, over-dramatic, etc. I even read one in which the reviewer said it "glosses over" the tragedy of the music program being cut, and shouldn't have been a happy ending.

Okay, well, I am a music teacher. I can honestly say that the threat of budget cuts and loss of arts programs is a very real fear that we live with from year to year. We have more work than any other teacher and, in many cases, less respect. Mr. Holland's plight is not terribly exaggerated. Furthermore, his effect on his students is not exaggerated either. I haven't been teaching long enough to have that much impact on my students (one semester of student teaching doesn't really change lives), but I have watched enough music teachers to know that they have a profound influence on students. The concepts in this movie are certainly not made up.

This movie is beautiful, and shows not only Mr. Holland's virtues, but his flaws as well -- and how he overcomes them. No one likes the idea of a teacher falling for his beautiful student. No one likes the idea of a father avoiding his son simply because he is deaf. But he overcomes these things, and that is what matters! Throughout his career, he grows as a person and touches many lives. That is what makes this movie beautiful.

  2. Mr. Holland's Opus
This DVD is a bit long, but it includes some great music, fine acting, and many touching scenes. I saw it on TV one evening, and decided I needed to get the DVD so I could watch it several more times. Richard Dreyfuss is outstanding as Mr. Holland, a high school music teacher and father. The film covers his life from his first days as a teacher to his forced retirement many years later. His love of his wife and deaf son as well as his dedication to teaching touches many lives through the years. He experiences many highs and lows. If you appreciate great acting and music, you'll love this film.

  3. A really sensitive and human story about youth and high school orchestra music. I heartily recommend it.

  4. "Mr. Holland's Opus" is an excellent movie! More importantly, however, the introduction of Jean Louisa Kelly's George Gershwin solos to movies -- particularly "Someone To Watch Over Me" -- is incredible, and just plain sensuous! I find myself drawn to hear her sing it over and over. But the subplots of Holland and his son, of the love story between Holland and his wife, and of the incredible affinity between Holland's music students and him, are also excellent. All in all, worth a mature family's watching.

  5. Mr. Holland's Opus is a great movie. I have watched it several times and I will keep watching it. It has so much meaning and caring and Richard Dreyfuss did a great job.

5 comments about Pete's Dragon (Disney Gold Classic Collection).
  1. this movie was a great movie!!! my children and i have watched it already a few times :) It got to my house in a timely fashion also.

  2. Even though this was made so many years ago, my kids (1 and 3) love seeing Pete interact with Elliot throughout the movie. The songs are wonderful as well and they often sing along! I will admit, the people at the very beginning of the movie are scary looking, which I choose to skip until they get a little older.

  3. This is such a wonderful movie. I have a 2 and a 4 year old. They watch this over and over. We love the songs---and it's a wholesome movie. Highly recommended!!!! Great present too.

  4. Woefully underrated, 'Pete's Dragon' surpasses many other Disney classics because the plotline and characters are completely original, and every single song (10 in all) is terrific. I can still sing them all. (Compare them with some of the inane ballads in 'Pocahontas' and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame.')

The story follows the escape of an orphan, Pete, from his abusive adoptive "family," aided by the dragon who has arrived, seemingly from nowhere, to rescue him. Elliot is childlike, cheery, and bumbling (or so it seems); however, the sheer physical size and flaming breath that make him a formidable protector also make him a social handicap when Pete tries to blend in in the coastal town of Passamaquoddy. (The invisible dragon stumbles through wet cement, obliviously takes down fences and other structures with his tail, etc., making Pete the bane of the town.)

If you or your child has extremely delicate sensibilities, you may want to preview this movie or bypass it altogether. Lampie is a drunk. In the same tradition as Lemony Snicket, Harry Potter, and the Roald Dahl books, 'Pete's Dragon' features cruel, uncaring parent figures and other adults with intent to harm. Even the schoolteacher seems to hate kids. I'm not sure if it was legal in the early 1900s to purchase an orphan, but that's the premise here. Two of the songs include graphic descriptions of physical violence--the Gogan family sing about beating Pete when they reclaim custody, and the evil Doctor Terminus and his sidekick sing about cutting up Elliot to make potions out of his parts--that could upset some very protective parents. The songs are NOT gratuitous, though, and serve to underscore the danger these characters are in.

Their cruelty IS offset by the two caring, capable adults, Lampie and Nora. (My favorite scene is Nora putting herself between Pete and the Gogans, who have come to town in pursuit of their purchase, the "bill of sale" in hand.)

The cast is flawless, and the movie is consistently engaging from beginning to end. Morals and themes include standing up for others, accepting others' differences, making room for newcomers, and having faith in discouraging circumstances.

  5. Good Movie, I saw it as a kid and now my children enjoy it just as much. This movie with it's simple message withstood the test of time, and it will continue to please for generations to come.

5 comments about Babylon 5 - The Complete Fourth Season.
  1. My favorite season of BABYLON 5 is Season Three, where the war against the shadows dominates. Season Four focuses more on the war to unseat President Bush . . . uh, I mean Clark, who has made a mockery of civil liberties, engaged in a propagandistic war of redefining such concepts of loyalty and treachery, and pretty much brought about the kind of world that many believe our current president probably fantasizes about. Indeed, B5 boards are full of threads about the prescience of B5 in not only reading the nature of the far right in the US in the nineties, but anticipating the nature of their ascendance to power in the first decade of the new century. From its very beginning B5 was an intensely political show. If it was slightly less topical than BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, it nonetheless was far more specifically critical of trends in American politics. If BSG's main purpose is to make the current political situation less black and white but considerably grayer, B5 is out to condemn certain trends in our political situation. I will hasten to add, however, that apart from President Clark, who is an almost pure embodiment of the fondest hopes and desires of many in the far right of today (if you read the writings of many of the Dominionists, who have had considerable influence on many leaders in the GOP -- including James Dobson, Mike Huckabee, and Pat Robertson -- they insist on using the power of government to enforce ideological agreement).

For a number of reasons, however, I didn't find Season Four as compelling as Season Three. A good deal of that lies in arc that involves Garibaldi becoming a sleeper agent for the Psy Corps. At no point did this seem quite right. Nonetheless, overall this is a very fascinating season. Looking at BABYLON 5 as a whole, I have a number of beefs with it. I detest the look of the aliens, especially Londo's utterly ludicrous hairstyle, which is only slightly more appalling than his accent. If I eventually got used to it, I never came to like either Londo's look or voice. Nor, really, the look of any of the aliens on the show. I also had trouble imagining a human falling in love with a half-alien with a gigantic bony protuberance encircling her head. But the show also did a number of things that I very much liked. Let me enumerate those.

First, B5 is not afraid to shake things up. Although I am suspicious of the claim that creator J. Michael Straczynski had all five seasons meticulously planned out as many claim (if he had, the series would have peaked in Season Five, not Season Three, nor would the final two seasons be somewhat anticlimactic to the Third), there definitely is a lot of forethought put into the stories that Straczynski wants to tell. The best was the Shadow War, but there were also thrown out there the story of a totalitarian right-wing Earth president and the problem of what to do with the telepaths. All these elements were put out there in Season One and gradually resolved in the subsequent four seasons. But along the way Straczynski showed a willingness to shake up the cast. There are very few characters who started off in the TV movie that began B5 who are there at the very end. Even some major characters are either gained or lost along the way, trading Sheridan for Sinclair after Season Two, keeping Marcus Cole for only two seasons, and loving Ivanova after the fourth. I like shows that show no fear in changing everything around from time to time. More shows need to try this.

So, all in all, another good season for B5. In fact, Seasons 3 and 4 combined are easily the highpoint of the series. Season 5 would be a bit of a let down both in terms of story and in cast, as many characters either leave entirely or play a more subdued role.

  2. Okay, so, yeah, I'm a big fan of B5, blah blah blah. I'm not going to write a content review because if you're getting the fourth season, you probably know a thing or two about one of the best SF series of all time.

No, I want to praise the collection itself. The CDs in each set are beautiful. Each set is color coded to the box it comes in. Each season comes in 6 disks, all clearly numbered and illustrated.

The disks themselves play on every DVD player I've ever put them in. No funny tricks or anything beyond the basic DVD format, and work like a charm in the crappiest of DVD players.

Enormous attention was given to the crafting of the disks: no commercials, production ads, or other time-sensitive garbage. Even the FBI warning is tacked onto the end of the last episode of each disk. The disk can be played without a remote. By default, subtitles are turned off, the title track is played and the disk automatically cues up to a "play all episodes" choice; just hit play and enjoy.

But, of course you can delve in, change settings, even skip straight to a specific scene, yadda...

The only down side is the small number of episodes with commentaries or additional info. I really enjoy getting into the heads of the people who make entertainment, listen to in-jokes, bloopers, etc. But this series has, usually, 3 episodes a season for which they've elected to create a commentary track, and no more. Sure the final disk has a couple of other extras (making of clips, etc) but very skimpy on the second audio track.

All in all, my favorite season, of my favorite show, on my the best disks in my collection.

  3. Shipment was very fast. The box was sealed and the DVDs are in great shape.

  4. This season is pretty hardcore sci-fi with lots of battle scenes. It may not have quite the level of humor as that of the other seasons, but it has its moments. The final episode is particularly interesting because of its overview of the whole Babylon5 universe.

  5. Season four resolves several issues regarding the Vorlans and Shadows, then starts a new series of conflicts.

5 comments about An American Werewolf in London.
  1. I sneaked in to see this at the odeon, on my own, when I was 16, and when the howling on the moors scene came on, I wished I hadn't. By the time the tube station scene came, I wanted to go home. Most horror films NEVER live up to the blurb, but this is still truly a classic, ahead of its time all the way back then, and still good today. Recommended.

    Baby Cromwell, Nottingham, England

  2. Another cult film with Jenny Agutter. She nurses a guy turning into a werewolf. The movie parodies itself. Moon songs are played. The best is Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival. John Fogerty of CCR wrote 20 rock classics including Proud Mary and Green River. The scene where David Naughton turns into a werewolf is disturbing. Jenny Agutter has had some weird love interest. In Walkabout, she is with an aborigine. In Logan's Run, it is a Sandman. In Othello, it is Shakespeare's black soldier. Here, it is a werewolf.

  3. Director John Landis steps away from directing hilarious comedies like Animal House to bring this frightful encounter. Two American travelers trek across the English mores, even though they were warned to be careful of the creatures of the night. As one of the travelers is bitten by some mysterious dog, he slowly comes to the realization that he has become a werewolf and must make the ultimate decision, whether or not to live or die, so he can save the people he loves.

The special effects in this film still stand the test of time, as no computer technology is used to digitally insert a life-like werewolf in the movie. In fact, the only time the werewolf is ever seen is for no more than 2 to 3 seconds, leaving it up to the imagination of the audience to decide how scary the werewolf may be. The make-up in this movie also stands out as the recently devoured victims remain among the living as they slowly deteriorate into the walking dead.

A first time experience for actors David Naughton and Griffin Dunne, both do an excellent job in conveying humor and frightful intensity throughout the film. Actress Jennifer Aguter also brings forth an amazing performance as the sensual love interest of the werewolf. If you ever feel the need to watch An American Werewolf in Paris, STOP! and go rent this one, the film is far superior and really lets your imagination run wild in no way that modern movies allow you to do anymore, plus it delivers both humor and fear in a throat-ripping blast of a movie.

  4. An American Werewolf in London was one of the first Horror films I saw. I remember hiding in the back room at the age of 5 hoping my parents wouldn't notice what I was watching. I had many a sleepless night due to that film. And I guarantee you that I will never feel safe in a subway.

    About the movie:
This is a classic in the werewolf genera, both humorous, frightening, and true to the tragic history of the wolfman. John Landis (of Animal House fame) directed this interesting piece starring David Naughton as David, Jenny Agutter as Nurse Price, and Griffin Dunne as Jack. This is the classic retelling of an old horror film modernized and updated in the special FX area. And while we are on that area can we say breakthrough special effects? These set the standard for monster films up until Jurassic Park showed us the power of CGI. I don't want to give the plot away even though it's a very standard werewolf plot.

There are of course some great scenes in this film, I love the Slaughtered Lamb, no one can watch this scene without feeling uncomfortable.

As far as character development goes, the characters are likeable, especially Jack, but don't develop very much into the movie.

The acting is better than most horror flix, though it won't win any awards, I can't complain that it detracted from the film at all.

The script is quick and well written, easy to follow and hard not to like.

By today's standards some of the creatures look a bit campy, specifically those in the dream sequences. But again there is nothing better than the scene where David turns into the werewolf. And I love the idea of a four legged werewolf. I always hated the idea of a werewolf being a hairy man on two legs.

The film on the DVD is exactly like the one that was out in theaters they claim it is redigitized but I never notice any difference in that.

    [...]

The Making of video was mostly a repetition of what was said in the interviews and was again entirely too short.

The casting of the hand was interesting and gave a better perspective on the real personalities of David Naughton and John Landis. It was pretty funny too. I just wish they had added more info on how they used the cast after it was made.

The deleted scenes have no sound to them so it's hard to distinguish why they were included.

I'll admit that I haven't listened to the John Landis voice over yet... after seeing his interview I can't imagine it being more that a poorly written stand up routine. Once I watch it I'll add my opinion on that into this review.

There were pictures and storyboards that I haven't bothered to look at yet since the batteries in my remote died.

My final opinion is to get this movie for the film, not the extra's. They are far too short and insignificant in the whole scheme of what is on the DVD. I personally love the DVD but I won't bother with the extras again.

  5. The Movie was just as good as I had remembered. Amazing special effects without the use of computer animation. A definite must have for any movie collection.

5 comments about Paris, Je T'Aime (Paris, I Love You).
  1. It is an amazing point of view of what we are, the humans. I think not only in Paris but indeed it is the city which underlines all the people life sensations.

  2. This movie started out very well, very touching and absolutely riveting. The opening stories had my complete attention and even if they seemed `well-acted' they had a ring of sincerity and honesty about them. The story about the woman fainting and then getting a ride from the nervous and always single bachelor to the woman who sings to her child with love and then moments later sings the same song to a different child in complete apathy was heart-wrenching and a little hard to watch.

But then, somewhere along the way, someone thought it was a good idea to start to bloat the screen with bloated, train-wreck television Americans and other over-exposed celebs. Leading the assault with Nick Nolte looking and sounding like he did the night he got pulled over in Malibu.

Then we have to endure a coke addled Maggie Gyllenhaal in her most ridiculous appearance on film yet. Yes ... playing herself as a drug addled American Film Actress abroad. Good lord, people can it get anymore mundane than Maggie Gyllenhaal not only acting flat, but being her usual flat performing self? She's made a few gems along the way with Secretary and Donnie Darko, but the bulk of her work is forgettable. What next ... a two hour movie with her sleeping, shot with a green night-vision camera? I wouldn't be surprised if someone is trying to pitch that project right now. And then roll out a few more celebs like Elijah Wood, Natalie Portman, Willem Dafoe, Gena Rowlands, Rufus Sewell, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Gyllenhaal, ad infinitum ad naseum. The end result being that whatever integrity this film had and whatever level of sincerity about love that there was in the beginning gets completely flushed down the toilet and wiped off the coke mirror laying on the trailer make-up counter.

Perhaps if they would've left the A-list / B-list people alone after Steve Buscemi, who was actually good in this, it would've been a lot better.

If the film had a lot less `cameo appearances' of these over-paid and over-exposed celebrities and more stories of everyday people in Paris, this movie would've ended up being one of the great classic films of this age. If they thought that star-power and name recognition was a good addition to this, they were wrong. I found more interest in watching Winged Migration. If you want to see a really good film about falling in love in France - try 37°2 Le Matin, or Betty Blue as it was titled for English speakers.

  3. Wish the stories tied in some - some worked some a little obscure or tried too hard to be creative

  4. In 2001, I enjoyed an HK film titled "Heroes in Love" which covered the various different forms of "love", four different stories and different directors. Enjoyed the movie very much and years later, when I heard of a film that would feature over a dozen shorts by different directors and talent form all over the world which all take place in the City of Love... Paris, France. I was sold.

In Paris Je T'Aime (Paris, I love You), there are 18 different shorts directed by famous directors worldwide and featuring major talent as well from different parts of the world.

Similar to "Heroes in Love", a different take on "love" with each short but if there was one thing that is consistent with each short is that every location is just beautiful and shows off the beauty of Paris.

For Gurinder Chadha's ("Bend it Like Beckham") titled "Quais De Seine" features a group of three guys sitting around and two of them hollering at the women passing by, while one just watches the woman sitting next to them. Sitting next to them is a young muslim woman who just can't believe what the guys are saying and when she walks off, trips...and the young man helps her up. This segment just shows the two different cultures but yet despite the difference, the young man is fasicinated by her.

For Joe and Ethan Coen ("The Big Lebowski", "O Brother Where Art Thou?") and their short "Tuileries", Sam Buscemi is a tourist and catches the eye of a couple who are making out. Of course, the guy doesn't appreciate it and thus a confrontation begins.

For Olivier Assayas's "Quartier des Enfants Rouges", Maggie Gyllenhaal is an actress who has a passion for narcotics and thus an interesting short to watch her drugged out.

For Australian filmmaker Christopher Doyle, who we know for his work in a variety of camera work for Asian films "Porte de Choisy" features Asian women in France and a sort of nod to the "Chung King Express" days, a classic Faye Wong hit is played during his short.

As for my favorites, Spanish writer-director Isabel Coixet's "Bastille" is a short about a man who is planning to confess to his wife that he wants to leave her. But before he tells her, she drops the news that she has a terminal illness and is dying. And decides to be with her for the remainder of her life and rediscovers he loves her until its too late.

In "Place de Fetes", German writer-director Oliver Schmitz directs a tragic tale of a man who works at a parking garage and falls for a woman he meets. He very much wants to meet her again but when they do, it's not in the best circumstances.

For "Faubourg Saint-Denis", German writer-director Tom Tykwer has an interesting short which features an actress played by Natalie Portman and a young blind man (Melchior Besion). The young man thinks his girlfriend has broken up with him and reminisces of his times with her. This camera and editing/post-production work for this alone was impressive.

"Plae de Victories" by Japanese writer-director Nobuhiro Suwa's short is a mother (played by Juliette Binoche) who mourns her son who has died and just wants to see and hold him one more time. It's a touching short.

There are a few segments that were ok and others that were freaky such as a vampire tale starring Elijah Wood but all in all, I really enjoyed this film.

For one, to have 22 directors come together for 18 shorts about love in Paris and for them to do it in their own style, and some who were able to work with the talent that they really wanted was just very cool. Location scouting for this film was just done well. Every outdoor scene, restaurant scene...everything was well selected and overall, I enjoyed the film.

Now with that being said, both these films are not for everyone. There are those who will watch it and just think both are a waste of their time. While there will be those who watch it and just see the beauty of these two films.

There are different kinds of love and for the directors to explore those differences, that's what I found so fascinating.

I've never been to Paris, but have always had it on my list of places to visit. The history, the art, the culture are all well documented. That's why it's the most visited city in the world. More tourists flock to Paris each year than to any other location on the planet. I hope to count myself among those numbers some time soon, and the urge for going was increased a thousand-fold by the film I watched last night:

    "Paris je t'aime"

The tagline for the film is "Stories of love. From the city of love.", but it's so much more than that. Featuring eighteen short films by twenty different directors, the five minute segments are each devoted to a different neighborhood in Paris, and each have their distinctive stamp. All of them are moving in their own way, some for good, some not, but that's really up to the individual. Standouts include the contributions by Joel & Ethan Coen, Olivier Assayas, Isabel Coxiet, and Alexander Payne. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the others, (I did apart from a segment on mimes and another on hairdressers) it's just that those were particularly good, especially Payne's American woman alone in Paris.

I've not been so moved by a film in years, and I can't stress enough how good it is.

    A +

  1. We now take care of a two year old Greatgrandaughter; she watches it on the DVD player, her Mama watched it on VHS, her grandmother saw it in the movie...they all love it.

  2. My 22 month old daughter loves the songs in this movie!! She is always singing them!

  3. I bought this for my granddaughter along with two other videos, this one is her favorite. She is only two but she knows what a funny movie is.

  4. I saw this movie the first time and i thought it would be really neat. i was so psyched because it took place in paris and i had seen a lot of advertising for it. but this is like a 101 dalmatians wanna-be failure! it is loaded with annoying songs that you wonder when they'll be done and get back to the dialogue. also there are plenty of bizarre details such as why does everyone speak with a quasi-English accent when they supposedly are from paris? why does the mouse hang out with cats? why are there 3 colors of cats from a white cat who never mentions any father figure who helped to produce them? why do the white cats have similar personalities and the brown cats as well? i think this movie is just lacking too much and there's really nothing to save it. it was okay. just okay.

  5. I'm happy to say that the new 2008 Special Edition has the original Spanish audio with German Valdez "Tin Tan" and other of the most exceptional dubbing actors of all time, despite what Amazon's technical details say. It is truly a joy to revisit my childhood by hearing the original voices I heard so long ago, with masterful performances that make you yearn for the golden age of Disney dubbing in Mexico.

Esta nueva edición de 2008 contiene el doblaje original con Tin Tán en el papel de Thomas O'Maley, además de muchas otras voces maravillosas con las que todos crecimos en Latinoamérica viendo las películas ahora clásicas de Walt Disney.
