5 comments about Midnight (Warriors: The New Prophecy, Book 1).
- Warriors are my favorite books. I'm trying to get them all. Thank you for your help in my quest. Midnight is actually one of my favorite Warrior books.
- All of the Erin Hunter books are great! I just love them and have read them many times over. I am not a reader, I hate to read!!! But give me a Warrior series book and leave me alone for a few days. They are the best. Thanks Erin for opening up a new world for me.
- How would you feel if you were a cat who has lived in peace in the forest with a clan for many months. But, a prophesy from your warrior cat ancestors is now haunting your dreams, saying that you must save your fellow cats from utter destruction. This is how Brambleclaw, warrior of ThunderClan, must now embark on a journey to find the answer he needs to figure out the prophesy.
The setting of the story is present day and takes place in the forest, a small town, and the coast. The main characters of the book are Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw, cats of ThunderClan, Stormfur and Feathertail, cats of RiverClan, Crowpaw, young apprentice of WindClan, Tawnypelt, a she-cat of ShadowClan, and Leafpaw, Squirrelpaw's sister.
The plot of the story is about Brambleclaw, a warrior cat of ThunderClan who must find the answer to a new and grim prophesy foretold to him by his warrior ancestors in his dreams. He later finds out that he must now journey to the coastline to seek the answer he needs to save his clan and all the other clans of the forest. He is accompanied by cats from the other clans, for they have had the same dreams as him. Now six cats must journey to the coastline so that they can "listen to what midnight tells them" before all four clans of the forest are destroyed by an unpredicted threat.
The theme of the book is about how important teamwork can be. Unfortunately I don't know what the title of the book stands for. The pacing of this book is really fast and the authors craft is excellent because the author leaves cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, encouraging you to keep reading. I don't think this book is in a Christian perspective because when cat die they don't go to heaven, they go to StarClan. I have no negative opinions of this book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and fantasy books.
- WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH ERIN HUNTER? Why did she switch the viewpoints like that? All Bramblepaw is is a even better Firestar without all his errors... He is just a goody goody freak. Why change viewpoints when you have already made your audience love the character you gave them in the first book. In this book Firestar is a dumb, old cat who is just mean. She also pretty much takes out all the other good characters like Graystripe, Dustpelt, Sandstorm, Ravenpaw, Barley, and lots of others.
- This book really captures my imagination, says Taima, age 8 1/2. I think it would be good for kids from advanced 7 to kind of below 9 years old. Anyway, I really think you should buy this book for a present or just to read. Even older people could read it and I'm sure that it would be good for them too.

- My daughter is not a "girly girl" in her reading choices but does love animals. She said the book was exciting and caught her attention in the first two chapters. She got it from the library originally and asked me to keep renewing it. She read it four times in a row. She had not read the first book in the series before this one.

5 comments about 277 Secrets Your Cat Wants You to Know: A Cat-Alog of Unusual and Useful Information.
- Great book if you've never had cats but I've had cats for 11 years and I guess they've been pretty good teachers 'cause they've already told me most of what was in this book. Great gift for someone who's just getting cats though!
- This book is packed with lots of information regarding cats and their owners. A must read for anyone new to owning a cat. Not as necessary for someone who knows allot about cats, as they will probably know most of the information in the book, but can still pick up on some pointers. Great book, Highly Recommended!
- Honestly, this really wasn't a very helpful book. All it seemed to be was a bunch of information gathered from a ton of other cat books and compiled into this one. I enjoy reading cat book but I found this one to be a bit annoying because I felt like I had read it already. Save your money and pick it up at the library if you feel the need to read it.
- I saw that this won the Best Cat book of the year award and I'm not surprised. I thought I knew a lot about cats but I learned a great deal of really practical and helpful things from this book. Plus it was a lot of fun (and easy) to read.
- The book was not what I expected. I waqs actually disapponted. More than likely I would not recommend this book nor would I purchased anything from this author again. Thanks!

5 comments about Pet First Aid: Cats & Dogs.
- I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I would only add that Dr. Bobbie Mammato, the author, conveys her wealth of experience in emergency veterinary care and public health, and makes this an extremely readable and useful text. In fact, why isn't Dr. Mammato credited as the author on your Web site
- This book is so helpful. I think every dog and cat owner should have one. It is so easy to use and can save yourself a lot of money in Vet visits if you're like me and worry about every little thing that might be wrong with your 'baby." I like the glossary and illustrations. I'm getting one as a Christmas gift for all the dog owners in my family. You can't beat it for $8.
- This book is a great help to me when my pets have any bumps or scratches. It is a wonderful source of first aid information that any pet lover should have.
- The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be. The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book. Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life. I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it. You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do. You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example. By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.
- This book is informative and easy to understand. My wife works as a pet advisor [...] and recommends it to all of her client. It is extraordinarily important that all pet owners have this book. It covers all emergency situations from insect stings to CPR to seizures.

5 comments about Pets at Risk: From Allergies to Cancer, Remedies for an Unsuspected Epidemic.
- A friend sent me the Plechner book, "Pets At Risk". It went with me on vacation to Puerto Rico, where I read it cover to cover. There I was by the pool, reading avidly about canine endocrine disorders.
This is an absolutely enthralling read for anyone who cares about their pets' health. Vets have significantly improved their abilities to diagnose diseases, but are still grappling with treating the result versus treating the underlying cause. As an owner who has dealt with issues ranging from cancer to skin allergies to Addison's disease, I found Dr. Plechner's observations and insights providing "Aha!" moments. I've already ordered books for each of my vets, in order to discuss whether this treatment could work with some long-term issues in some of our pets.
- Veteranrian Alfred J. Plechner (a practicing graduate from the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with thirty-five years of clinical work experience), draws upon his years of experience and considerable expertise in Pets At Risk: From Allergies To Cancer, Remedies For An Unsuspected Epidemic spotlights just how endocrine-immune imbalances can cause or exacerbate multiple medical disorders in our beloved animal companions. Offering practical advice for helping imbalanced dogs and cats with supplements; natural remedies for a variety of possible ailments; diet replacement programs, and so much, more, Pets At Risk also stresses the responsibilities pet owners face, as well as exploring the implications these groundbreaking discoveries have for we humans. Pets At Risk is essential, accessible, "reader friendly", and very strongly recommended for personal reading lists and community library Pet Care reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
- I read this book when my dog was so sick wth chronic ear infections (that were not responding to the typical prescription drugs) that she had to have 2 benadryl every 4 hours--and this is when she was already on a hypoallergenic diet. Three vets said she had food allergies (she did appear to react worse to some foods, and did somewhat better on duck and potato). Two vets said to try an elimination diet. We did, and could hardly add any thing back, as she NEVER seemed to get healthy enough after reacting to a new food to add another food. Well, I read this book in one sitting, and made an appointment immediately with the one vet in our state who is familiar with E&I dogs and Plechner. Our dog tested positive for the disorder--her cortisol levels were less than half than that of a healthy dog. She has only been on the medications for a few days, and she's stopped shaking her head and licking her paws. She's got her old playful attitude back--she hadn't wanted to play her favorite game for a couple of months. The best part is that she will very likely be able to eat well-rounded diet when she's better stabilized. What looked like food allergies was most likely food intolerances caused by her imbalance. Most E&I dogs can eat normal diet unless they have "true" food allergies.I'm in raptures because without this book, my dog would more than likely have struggled all her life with these problems, been treated symptomatically for what was a whole body glandular disorder, and continued to have a poor quality of life. This book is easy to read, compassionate and straightforward. Plechner pulls no punches- the test is expensive, and the medication regimen is usually for life. But he gives countless examples of diseases and symptoms that are often caused by E&I imbalance-- it's amazing and heartening to read that countless problems occur when the animal isn't making enough cortisol, and that these problems are fixable. He gives info technical enough to help any vet treat your animal--even if the vet has never diagnosed an E&I dog before. He sternly explains that E&I treatment won't fix true food allergies---but it will more than likely make symptoms caused by other kinds of allergies disappear. I am buying this book for friends who have chronically sick dogs, and lending my copy out to anyone who is curious. It's well worth the investment. My dog will be the first to agree!
- This Book is a God-Send! I was always at the vet, literally. I was there sometimes multiple times in a week at the bad times, and in the relative good times only a couple times in a month. You see I have 3 dogs and 3 cats, and between them I was literally spending thousands of dollars on vet bills for their various ailments and afflictions.
I was wondering why on earth my animals were always sick. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats that were diagnosed with IBD (Inflamatory Bowel Disease), and all my dogs had allergies with various sorts of secondary skin and ear infections that go with. Not to mention the occasional surgery to remove and biopsy a suspicious looking cyst, or lump that appeared here and there.
I was also spending hundreds of dollars a month on various medications for their chronic conditions. Yet, they just seemed to treat the symptoms and no the cause as my pets still seemed to get getting sicker.
Well, This book gave me the answer! 4 of my 6 animals (My 3 dogs and 1 of my cats) has tested positive for Low Cortisol as described in this book. After putting my animals on the Plechner Protocol (and working with my holistic vet does the testing and follows the protocol) they are now the healthiest they have ever been. So many of seemingly unrelated health problems in aniamls are explained by Low Cortisol and this book.
Buy It! Everyone Pet owner should have a copy. It not only saved me money from tons of vet visits, it most importantly helped me to improve my animals health by treating the root cause, instead of just the symptoms of their health problems.
- I loved this book. Vet (Dr. Churchill - Atlanta, GA) shared it with me. We took blood test of my dog only to find she was not in the normal range. We raised all her levels (cortizone and thyroid) and she is doing great. No more itching, allergies. She eats Royal Canine hypo-allergy and takes meds. Much better than going thru symptoms every 3 months and just getting a steroid shot !! Her coat is even coming in more and she looks healthly. Go get the book and share it with your vet !!! Good luck. Karen and Dominique

5 comments about The Writer's Toolbox: Creative Games and Exercises for Inspiring the 'Write' Side of Your Brain.
- As a homeschooling parent with a high school age daughter, I bought The Writer's Toolbox to use as part of our writing program. After years of focusing on sentence structure and grammar rules, I was afraid I had completely destroyed my daughter's desire to write. Jamie's toolbox provided the breath of fresh air that our writing life needed. With just the right amount of instruction and loads of room for creativity, the exercises offered quickly restored to my daughter the joy of writing. When we break out the Tool Box, the spinners, cards, timers and sentence starting sticks have us feeling like we're playing a game. When learning and fun are synonymous, both teacher and student are winners. Thanks, Jamie for this great writing tool!
- Jamie has been one of my most inspiring writing mentors, and it looks like she literally "picked up" her classroom and placed it into this clever and eye-appealing keepsake! How ingenious that she put her creative teaching techniques INSIDE a box in order to motivate writers to think OUTSIDE of it. The only thing missing from this toolbox is a badge that says, "I am a writer," as the person who utilizes her time tested techniques will certainly be able to make this declaration after using it!
- This is truly a wonderful product! Simply put, the Writer's Toolbox is a necessity for every writer. Who among us has not been faced with a blank page at one point or another during our writing careers? The writing exercises in this package are perfect for moving beyond "I want to write" to "I am writing." In fact, it was a writing exercise from Jamie Cat Callan that inspired me to write my novel, due for completion in August 2008. Kudos to Ms. Callan for a brilliant creation!
- The Writer's Toolbox is fun and engaging-- not only for me, but for our weekly writers' group! The group of six to eight of us come to the table with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The Writer's Toolbox inspirational and fun exercises are relational and help us to jump 'write' in with our warm-ups! Thanks for sharing your fabulous ideas and instruction, Jamie!

- I'm an English teacher and a part-time, professional non-fiction writer. I walked past "The Writer's Toolbox" in a bookstore this past weekend, sniffed at the creative packaging, and muttered, "All fluff, but no substance, I'll bet!" And yet, I found myself going back to it. Finally, I bought the damned thing, hoping to scratch the itch.
At home, I opened it, expecting buyer's remorse. No way!!! This kit is amazing. I plan to use it in the classroom next year, both during school hours with my writing students and after hours with my Writers Guild. I especially like the sample story -- in the directions -- that is essentially the result of the toolbox games.
My favorite device? The non sequiter sticks. I plan on using them to help keep some of my non-fiction writing dynamic. Of course, I'll have to modify the items to my own research and reality, but that strikes me as half the fun.
A very clever little box full of games, ideas, and methods for creative writing. Thanks!

5 comments about Scruffy (I Can Read Book 2).
- Hi I am 6 yrs old and you may have seem my reviews before. I am a great fan of I can read books. This one is really one of my favorites. I like what Todds parent's did for him. I also like how helpful and patient Mrs. Star was to Todd. But most of all I loved Scruffy! This book also taught me things about cats I didn't know. If you love animals or want one you should read this book. Again the best part is you can read it to your parents and not have them read it to you.
- The child in the story goes to the animal shelter to pick out a kitten. While there were terrific messages about responsible pet ownership, my child was crushed when I had to explain what putting animals to sleep meant. Not something that needs to be in a book for 6 year olds.
- I am a first grade public school teacher who believes strongly in humane education. One of my children brought this book to school for book share. I was delighted to hear the acturate information that was presented. Many important animal welfare topics where touched upon. It was a wonderful discussion starter for how to be a responsible pet owner. The children were able to ask many relevant questions and get realistic answers. What a great book to read with children who care about animals. My children asked to hear it again and again.
- Scruffy is a great book that teached me that you shouldnt judge animals by the way that they look because they can be sweet, loving, and a great pet. Scruffy is about a boy who wanted a cat very much and when he went to the animal shelter to buy one he saw lots of kittens and cats . after he looks at all thecats he chose the sweetest of them all even tough he wasnt cute
- i really like this book beacuse it teaches me that you shoudn't judge people, books, or animals. Scruffy is about a boy who wanted to have a cat for his birthday. Once his parents take him to the animal shelter he picks out a very pretty kitten but then he saw an ugly cat who was all alone and sad. Since the boy feels bad for the cat he adopted him beacuse even tough he wasnt cute he was sweet, loving, and playful.

5 comments about Fairy Realm #3: The Third Wish (Fairy Realm).
- With every story Jessie adds to her charm bracelet a special gift from those whom she helps in the Fairy Realm and my five year old daughter and I can hardly wait to read what happens next! Emily Rodda's series of Fairy Realm books are a perfect gift to share. From the first book you become hooked on the charming characters from Granny Jessica the true Queen of the Failry Realm to the mischeivous elf Gif and Maybelle the talking miniature horse. What a delight of adventure as each tale unravels and Jessie finds that she is stronger than she thinks and so very much like Granny whom she loves and admires.
In book three, you learn more about Jessie's Grandfather, who stole the heart of the fairy Princess Jessica, and his adventures in the Undersea of the Fairy Realm where he endeared himself to the merpeople and where Jessie must go to save Blue Moon where she, Granny, and mother live and the entrance in the Secret Garden to the Fairy Realm. Another enchanting page turner in this wholesome series geared to young girls who believe in all that is magical. Nice easy read that you will read with your child now and one they will read themselves when they are able. A another delight.
- OK, I'm a guy with 3 young daughters and so, but for Potter, story time is it's own kind of hell. Too sweet, too predictable. This makes Disney world look like Mordor. Give the character attention deficit and a queen who gives long boring lectures filled nevertheless with lifesaving facts, missed. Oh well, beats the heck out of Pony Pals at least - I was going nuts: "pony pony pony pony ...".
My 7 year old daughter loves the Realm however, and she's just at the level where I can foist it off on her to read. Give me instead something like Gene Wolfe's books of the New Sun where the narrator doesn't quite tell the truth of what happened and where the entire meaning of a scene can shift 3 or 4 times as you learn more. Where appointments are missed, connections lost, original dreams forgotten but new purposes found. If only this could be found in a kid's book.
Perhaps I'll try reading her Robert Penn Warren's "All the Kings's Men" and see if that sparks. But more realistically, I recommend the trilogy Juniper; Wise Child; Colman -- all by Monica Furlong. This is readable by adults and yet strikes the interests of little girls.
- My 6 (almost 7) year old adores the Fairy Realm books. And I have to say, after having waded through some pretty awful, perfunctorily churned out "series books" with her in the past, I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of these books. Compared with so much of what's out there, Emily Rodda's writing is a cut above. The stories in this series are gentle and familiar fantasy material -- but it's engagingly told, and suspenseful without being *too* scary for younger readers.
This book, "The Third Wish", I very much liked for the twist Rodda puts on a classic fairy tale/fantasy trope. It's nicely done, and my daughter had a blast untangling the threads of the story's resolution.
- The Third Wish is the best book I've ever read! I did a book report on it and the book was very adventurous and fun to read. This book is great hard covered and the pictures are amazing. There are lots of details which makes this book even better. If you buy this book you are going to LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- My daughter will be seven in 2 months, but I have to say this 31 year old loves Jessie too. If you want a books with action, fun, danger, and adventure for your daughter that won't put you to sleep these are it! The plot is tangled, yet Jessie and my daughter figure it out at about the same time. Last night my daughter sat up in the middle of the chapter and screamed, "Oh Oh OH the wish blah blah blah (I won't spoil the book for you)" These books inspire a love of fantasy without there ever really being a truly hateful evil person (the first book has a little evil). They focus a lot on suspense. I am not sure if it is the times we can't put the book down before find out what Jessie is going to do, or the extended bedtime that results; but she loves Fairy Realm! ...and Mama does too!

4 comments about Natural Nutrition for Cats: The Path to Purr-fect Health.
- This book contains information that every pet owner should know about! I have a good friend whos cat was killed by eating a well known brand of cat food that was included in the pet food recall last year. This book gives you all the information you need to protect yourself and your cat from such a tragic fate. The book is a worthy follow up to Kymythy Schultze's other two books that I recommend to everyone. The No-Cook book for People and Pets is my favorite receipe book of all time, and the Natural Nutrion for Dogs and Cats book was what started me feeding a homemade diet years ago. She has done a brilliant job of updating the information in the first book and adding new and very timely information for cats and their people. As usual Ms. Schultze adds her brand of humor and charm to the subject, making it a very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed the cat pictures too. Great book!
- Lots of great (scary!) info on the unregulated pet food industry in this country. If you are on the border about switching your cat to a raw food diet, this book will give you the motivation to never feed with commercial pet food again! Lots of detail on how to make your own food and what supplements to add (and why). After conventional vets could do no more for my kitty (and I think were making him worse!) I started taking him to a small-animal osteopath/homeopath. She has been using raw diets on her animals for 12 years and said she found that the animals actually do better on just whole ground up animals (including some liver, heart, gizzard and the ground bones). She did not recommend feeding extra supplements.. If all the supplement preparation in the book looks too overwhelming for you, just try the ground up animal since it is still WAY better than the commercial poisons. Just remember that you must include some taurine (heart and gizzards) and a small amount of liver and some bone for them to get a balanced diet. I think the supplement controversy comes in because cats eating whole animals would eat the stomach and everything and most likely get some vegetable matter from what their prey (mostly mice) would eat. Find a good butcher who will grind whole chickens, cornish hens or quail, rabbits, and turkey meat with added organ meats. They will most likely want to do it at the close of business just before they clean their machines since they would contaminate other meats ground afterwards.. Get the meat coarse-ground and add some small cut-up pieces if you have the time so your kitty has something to chew on.. Also, try to get meats without hormones or antibiotics since cats little bodies really aren't equipped to handle all that either.. although, raw with hormones and antibiotics is still better than commercial as well.. Have patience, if your kitty is addicted to his crunchies, you may have to put a few in the raw food to get him to start eating.. My sister and I both did the "sink or swim" philosophy with our cats (here's the food, eat it) and they both took to it pretty quickly.. and are eating with gusto now! One great benefit is that their poo gets tiny and all dried up with no smell! My kitty had HUGE stinky poo before the raw diet: guess the commercial food had so little nutrient value that it all came out in the litter box! ..Oh, and my kitty is now putting weight back on and his fur is getting thicker every day!
- I found the subject intriguing and have a lot of respect for holistic approaches. The discussion of the dark side of the pet food industry was troubling and made me really rethink what I am feeding to my cat. I also respect the author's emphasis in obtaining nutrients from food (the synergistic blend of nutrients in food can't be duplicated in a lab) rather than pills and supplements. Her approach to nutrition can and should very easily transfer to how we (humans) should eat for optimal health.
Unfortunately, there is some seriously sloppy science and argumentation that occurs in the book. For one, the author states that grains should not be part of a cat's diet. Grains are cheap and make up a large part of commercial cat food. Cats are evolutionarily equipped to eat raw meat so that's what we should feed our cats. She insists that this is safe because cats survived millions of years eating raw meat without bacterial problems. The problem in this country is that our farm animals are eating things that they were not evolutionarily equipped to eat. Cows being fed grain has resulted in the evolution of acid-resistant E. coli strains. The acid-resistant E. coli strains have been an issue for human health too. Our farm chickens are also raised in very unsanitary conditions resulting in higher levels of Salmonella, making me very wary of feeding raw chicken to my cat. The author did warn against feeding our cats raw pork because it might not be safe - I'm not sure why she thinks pork is unsafe while beef and chicken are. As far as I know, the main reason why people cooked pork to well done was to kill the parasitic roundworm Trichinella spiralis. Nowadays, the risk of contracting trichinosis from eating undercooked pork is very rare. But T. spiralis is still found in wild animals. So yes, it is natural for cats to hunt and eat wild animals like rabbits. But it is also natural for cats to contract parasites from these natural diets. While the author stresses that we should try to feed our cats organic meats if budgets allow. I agree with this. But feeding our cats raw conventional meat has its potential risks. The author clearly has her own agenda and makes no mention of these potential risks. She dismisses any real discussion about these risks by giving anecdotes of all the healthy pets she and her vet have met who eat raw food diets. These anecdotes are helpful but they are not scientific.
While criticizing how the pet food industry derives its nutrient formulations from studies done on animals that are not cats, the author will make a case for why artificial dyes, benzoic acid, BHA,BHT, MSG, and citric acid are bad for cats while referencing studies that most likely were not done on cats (I'm not entirely sure because the author never footnotes any of the scientific claims she makes). I understand that it is not scientifically sound to make conclusions about cat nutrition if all the studies done were done on horses because they are two different animals, but as someone who is relatively familiar with the scientific process, many of the breakthroughs found in human nutrition were from studies done on animals that were not human. Other breakthroughs were from accidents - yes it's sad that many kitties died because the pet food industry did not realize that taurine was an essential amino acid. It's happened in the human world too. Sometimes the only way to figure out FOR SURE that something is essential for a particular animal is to do testing on that animal. But I'm sure if scientists were starving some cats of an essential nutrient to prove that it is essential, the author and others would throw a fit.
All in all, the book does a good job in starting a cultural dialogue on the issue. That's it. Hopefully it can result in more scientific inquiry on what is best for our cats. Until then, I will be on the lookout for better resources.
- This little gem really spells out how to feed your cat. I have known for years that a raw diet is the best way to feed them, but I could never get my two boys to eat anything raw. This book has helped me feed them right. I am almost there. In another few days they will be eating a completely raw diet. I no longer give them dried food. I know they like it but it is so bad for them, even the high quality, low carb variety that I have because it has been cooked. My cats have already lost weight and their coats are shinier and healthier. Knowing what I know about the human diet (that we eat too many carbs and not enough fat) I am certain that having my cats eat an ancestral diet is the way to keep them healthy and disease free. I highly recommend this book if you want your cats to live a long and healthy life.
