5 comments about Into the Mouth of the Cat: The Story of Lance Sijan, Hero of Vietnam.
- I just re-read Into the Mouth of the Cat by the military historian, Malcolm McConnell. It is an undisputed classic--undisputed execpt for that jerk Amazon reviewer from Ft. Campbell, KY who stated, erroneously, in 2001 that Mcconnell "never served." He served as an Army enlistedman in 1957-58, but more importantly, he served as a civilian intelligence officer in the Congo in the 1960s and in Vietnam. I know because I was there with him. Unlike Ft. Campbell, McConnell knows what combat is. His book shows this.
- While I am inclined to agree with the title of a previous review "great story, terrible book", I would not go so far as to say it was a "terrible" book. However, for some reason (I am just a reader) McConnells writing did not pull me in and hold me.
Further, while Sijan's story is incredible and moving, (crawling on his back in a severely injured condition for 45 days and some 5-6 miles to reach an enemy transport road) I still have not justified in my own mind why he persisted in tactics that ensured his death.
I did not want him to escape, I wanted him to survive (as did his fellow prisoners.) I can only consider that in his condition he was unable to think clearly/rationally. Which lends itself not so much to bravery as it does to insanity. i.e. he considered allowing capture by the enemy while still in the jungle in order to procure life sustaining food and water but decided against it for surely he would be killed. Yet, once captured (the first time) and given some care, he persisted in escaping before he was in any condition to do so with a reasonable chance of survival, even if he wasn't recaptured.
- I read this story years ago and remember being inspired by the courage of this young man. One reviewer stated that his plane was shot down, I thought that the bombs he was dropping detonated prematurely and caused the crash. Regardless, it's a great story about a guy who never gave up.
- While in the USAF, back in 1987, I had first read this book. This is the type of book, that, when you begin to read it, you cannot put it down until it is finished. The author writes in a very easy to read style, no "big" words, but, is very descriptive and detail orientated in his telling of Sijan's heroism. Although, this is a war "related" story, I feel that it is not a "War Story". Malcolm McConnell, through his attention to detail, chronicles the extremely brave and selfless actions of an otherwise ordinary man from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After I had originally read this, 1987, I was so overwhelmed by the author's accurate depiction of what had been "Folk Lore" in the Bay View area of Milwaukee. Because of this book, I have always thought of Sijan, and all that he had endured, whenever an obstacle or challenge is placed before me. This is a very inspirational book. As I was driving on Kinnickinnic Avenue in Bay View, I passed by a Flag that is displayed right next to the road, in a little ballpark that is named Lance Sijan Field. And, every time that I pass it, I instinctively Salute. But, this time, I also bought this book, actually, four, one for my Father, two for my Brothers, and, of course, one for myself. By the way, this time, again, I had also read it in one sitting!
- The story moves along quickly. Its not a book you are going to struggle to finish. It will hold your attention and is a great motivational story as far as will and mental toughness are concerned.

1 comments about Captain Cat (I Can Read Book 1).
- This is a funny book that shows a cat who jumps to attention at the sound of a bugle, and has more stripes than a drill sergeant. While captains don't wear stripes (they have bars), the book is a funny look at miltary life, from the perspective of a cat who innocently wanders onto an army post and is befriended by a soldier. The book is suitable for K-3, but is also a good choice for older readers who need the confidence that successfully completing a book on his or her own provides. This book was available in my son's elementary school library, which I believe says something for its broad appeal.

5 comments about The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It: Over the Edge and Back with My Dad, My Cat, and Me.
- Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us. Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless. Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.
- I love this book and I often re-read it. Funny and clever writing. Easy to relate to and written with heart!
- A beautiful and engaging story, this memoir deals with coming of age, learning to accept and give love, coming to terms with parents, and death and dying. Geneen Roth masterfully writes about many of life's large universal themes and puts them together expertly into a cohesive whole. This story will stick with you. This book is one of those rare gems to keep in your permanent library, one that will surely unfold a different lesson and mystery each time you read it.
- I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Geneen Roth is a very talented writer - I love the way she writes from her heart, letting others in her life, to help us learn and grow by seeing parts of ourselves in her life. This book has helped me get a grip on some emotions I've been dealing with for a long time. And in just a few days of reading I finished it with a stronger attachment to my own cats and appreciation for their place in my life, as well as for certain people in my life that I've so long taken for granted. Can't wait to read more from Geneen! I'm sharing this one with my mom, a cat-lover as well.
- This was a great book and an easy read. It helps with understanding the feelings about our parents.

5 comments about Coming Home (Heartland #1).
- This is about a girl who loved horses, and her mother owned a ranch called "Heartland". They take care of and help any type of horse. One day they went to rescue a horse and her mom died from getting hit by a falling tree. Amy is left to save Heartland.
I think this story is really good. It reminds me of my life because I take care of horses. I also think that Amy will safe Heartland and be just like her mother. Also I think Amy and Ty will get together. I would recommend this book to people because this story is sad and truthful about life.
- Bought this for my 15 year old daughter. She loved it and actually read it. Which is always nice to have a teenager read!
- Heartland-Coming Home
Heartland is a place of dreams and horses and that's where Amy's heart belongs. Heartland is a place like no other, breaks painful memories and teaches horses to trust again. To what I know Amy's calls Heartland home like no other place in the entire world. Amy loves her family very much and especially her mom. She loves her mom because she has don many things for her. I think Amy likes having her mom's gift, having to be able to understand what they need. And saving the animals by teaching them to stay healthy and stay trusting.
This book is mostly about a girl named Amy. And Amy is trying to help these horses that can't trust anyone anymore. And later in the book something bad happens. Someone get into a terrible accident. But you have to read the book to find out.
- This is a beautiful, touching story of love , strength , hope , and regeneration after an agonizing loss.
Even though it is a young adult novel, I recommend it to anyone of any age.
- I really liked this book. Even though I'm an older reader (52) who collects horse fiction, and its out of my age bracket, I found it to be very readable and it held my interest. Its a wonderful book for the young teen. The main character, Amy, learns some significant lessons in life after her mother dies in a tragic accident, and she is left to run the horse rescue by herself. She learns that life does go on, and responsibilites must still be realized, even in the face of tragedy. The characters in this book are likeable, the horses and horse terminology are realistic, and the book is not overly mushy or boring. It moves pretty quickly, and has a taste of suspense at times. All in all, I believe this book would be an excellent gift for a young, horse crazy girl! I would have greatly appreciated having it when I was at that age where horses were just about my whole world, and boys came second!

5 comments about The Silent Miaow: A Manual for Kittens, Strays, and Homeless Cats.
- This manual for kittens, strays, and homeless cats was translated by the gifted writer, Paul Gallico, after it was typed by a wise cat. The result is alternately uncanny and heartwarming. Uncanny because I recognized every ploy that my cat, Duchess, uses to wheedle from me a life of incredible comfort, and heartwarming because it portrays the wonderfully affectionate nature of cats. After you read this, you will never again view a cat in the same manner. They are calculating creatures, but they are also full of love for you. The lessons in this manual are enhanced wonderfully by dozens of terrific photographs of a cat named Cica. Don't miss this splendid book.
- Of all the books and booklets I have read about cats, this is my absolute favorite and has been since I got it the year it came out. Every cat should read it*. First you have Paul Gallico, who also wrote "Thomasina", "The Snow Goose" and "The Poseidon Adventure", among others. Add Suzanne Szasz, a truly great animal photographer and you have a winner. It's charm will captivate anyone lucky enough to read it.
*When you do read it, you'll know why I said that.
- Bought it for a gift and was reluctant to part with it! Amusing, entertaining, for anyone who likes cats. My nephew has 14, and he loved the book. I probably will look for another copy. Of course, the author was a first class writer of his day, so how could you miss?
- I purchased this for a friend who loves cats. I had read this book many years ago and still have fond memories. I purchased two, one as a gift and one to loan out. From a cats view point, it is very enjoyable. My hardback copy is somewhere. So the two that I purchased were bought used.
- As one of the two humans claimed by three cats (and one dog), I can wholeheartedly endorse this book - at one point or another, we've had every one of the techniques set forth here by Momma Cat practiced on us. She's an excellent teacher, this cat, and evidently an awful lot of kittens have read this or have had it read to them :) If you love cats or would just like an insight into the mind of these often mysterious creatures, you will thoroughly enjoy reading this "manual for kittens"!

5 comments about Carbonel: The King of Cats.
- My 4th grade teacher read this to us. She made us put our heads on our desk while she read to us, we all felt we were much too old for this book but were instantly drawn in and couldn't wait till she got to the end. I loved this book as a child, and as a parent, and now a grandparent. If your younger child loves Harry Potter, this is a great book, especially for a girl. It has a strong female protagonist and just enough humor, as well as mystery and magic, to keep everyone interested.
- My dad, a teacher at a local polytech, would often bring home castoffs from the school's library in case I found something in them I'd enjoy. Amongst my pile of discovered treasures were illustrated paperbacks of The Wizard of Oz series, an SE Hinton that I found fascinating because it was so 'grown up' for me, and a water-damaged hardcover copy of Carbonel: The King of Cats (which had one page in it bound upside-down).
Because of all the travelling our family did, I've long since lost my childhood collection of books, but I will never forget the Summer evenings I spent imagining myself in the the far away land of Tottenham Grove - arguing with conceited black cats, eating cucumber sandwhiches for lunch, and muttering short but eloquent spells to asuage the bruised ego of a flying broom.
I admired Rosemary's take-charge, independent spirit, blushed at the hint of possible romance between her and John, and for a while, I checked every black cat I encountered for evidence of royalty.
After all these years, I'm excited to know that Carbonel is still in print because I can't wait to introduce this King of Cats to my own children. Very much a predecessor to Harry Potter, I know this story has enough thrills, suspense, fun and, yes, magic to keep even the most sophisticated young readers thoroughly entertained.
- This book was one of my favorites growing up. It is an excellent tale of a magic cat and a witch's hat, broom, and cauldron, which 2 children bring together to restore Carbonel's rightful place as King of the Cats. Animal lovers will enjoy this book very much.
- This was a favorite book from my childhood. I just ordered it for my own daughter, who just loves cats. (We have three.) Even though she's 15, she still loved reading "Carbonel: The King of Cats." I'm so pleased that it's back in print! Some children's books are so good that you don't have to be young to enjoy them. This is one.
- This is an old-fashioned book in many ways, yet my very modern 11 year old just loved it -- I bought it sight unseen, and when I got it I was a little afraid that he might find it too young for him, but he absolutely adored it. The vocabulary does not talk down to children, and there are a lot of British words, and some that describe things most modern kids have never seen (a coal skuttle, for instance), so it was challenging enough to keep his attention. The heroine, Rosemary, has a sidekick named John, which I think also helped keep his attention -- like many boys, he likes to read about other boys in preference to girls. Th author brings the story to life slowly and magestically; it is very well written. A good read-aloud, too.

5 comments about Cat Spitting Mad: A Joe Grey Mystery (Joe Grey Mysteries).
- This book was utterly delightful with Joe Grey's deep respect for the Chief of Police, Max. By proving Max's innocence, Joe Grey, Dulcie and Kit all provided bits and pieces of the puzzle, including a daring rescue of the 13 year old girl who witnesses the murder. The story definitely kept me on my toes wondering what was going to happen next...Now I wish the next book of Ms. Murphy's would come out even sooner than January so I can start reading it...
- I think this is certainly one of the best Joe Grey books, if not THE best. Joe and Dulcie are joined by their new sidekick called "The Kit", a tortoiseshell kitten who has an insatiable craving for adventure and danger. There has been a murder of two women on a bridal path and the third rider, the cats' friend Dillon has disappeared, maybe murdered too or kidnapped. Joe's greatly admired friend, Max Harper, the Molina Point chief of police is the one and only suspect in the murders. Joe is spitting mad that people will believe his friend Max could do such a thing. Naturally, Joe "knows" that Max is innocent. The Kit has witnessed the end of the murders and been scared witless by all the violence but she was too scared to know what she saw or to recognise anyone. The three cats run afoul of Joe and Dulcie's old nemesis, Lee Wark who knows their secrets about understanding human language and having high intelligence. He would absolutely love to put a permanent damper on their crime solving shenanigans. He thrives on killing cats anyway. Kate Osborne, who can change to a cat and back to a human is back on the scene and terrified because three convicts have escaped, including Lee Wark who knows her secret also. She seems to have a "thing" for Joe's human housemate, Clyde Damen while Clyde's old girl friend, Charlie seems to be sweet on Max Harper now.
How Joe Grey, Dulcie and Kit thread their way through this maze of tangles, car chases, and a haunted house that's home to a cougar makes a fine story. It's also amazing that three small cats could get through all the perils without losing one or more lives. Ms. Murphy only gets better! She adds more polish and finesse to the stories every time. I'm anxious to read "Cat Laughing Last"
- Joe Grey, the talking tomcat, is furious. Two women, a mother and her grown daughter, have been savagely murdered while out riding, and the younger girl who was with them at the time has disappeared. What's worse, Molena Point Police Chief Max Harper is the only suspect. While Joe and his feline partner Dulcie have often tricked and manipulated Harper in their previous investigations, and he's not yet aware of their secret, they like and respect the veteran cop, who is a longtime buddy of Joe's human housemate, Clyde Damen. Joe can't believe that anyone would think such an upright law-enforcement officer capable of murder and worse. Naturally, he and Dulcie and their new sidekick--"the Kit," another gifted feline--set about to prove Harper's innocence. While the resolution of the murders isn't unexpected--the motive was simple revenge--the means the three cats employ to prove it are, as always, clever and suitably feline, and their rescue of young Dillon is full of thrills.
- If you appreciate cats, love mysteries and just want a relaxing and fun read...then read the entire Joe Grey series. Excellent!
- This is a great book in the Joe Grey series. Joe, Dulcie and Kit find the clues that prove Chief Max Harper did not murder anyone. Great way to introduce the Garza family into the series. I just wish my cat would talk to me!

5 comments about The Complete Book of Running.
- I grew up in the 'boom' time of running: I was a teenager coming into running during the late 70's and early eighties. I still remember a wonderful article in Runner's World magazine on Jim Fixx. I am still saddened by his death. He was the 'every man' of running: un-pretentious and soulful. His prose is precint, witty, and full of life. I recommend the book not only for its knowlege base, but for the sheer 'readability'! And yes...those are actually his legs on both of his book covers! We all miss you, Jim.
-Will Soyars
- I started running way, way before the "running craze" hit. This was in the late 1950 and very early 1960. Let me tell you it was pretty lonely out there. Little was known, shoes were very primitive and attitudes were even more primitive. All that changed and one of the primary movers of that change was this book and books like it. You have no idea how nice it was to know there were others out there. I purchased my first copy when it was first published and am still reading it to this day. Yes, some of the data my be a bit dated but to tell you the truth, not all that much. I stil run and what was true then is still pretty much the truth now. Cannot recommend this book highly enough.
- WOW, I had originally purchased this books eons ago, in the early 80's and I had been jogging already for since 1976 when I was a teenager. The information in this book inspired me more than anything else about jogging. I LOVED THIS BOOK! I had lost it somewhere through many moves and life changes in my life and I had also quit jogging due to an illness I went through. I'm 48 now, will be 49 in a few weeks and I still believe in my heart that I'm a runner, a jogger. I'm purchasing this book TODAY and can't wait to read it again! If there is any book that encourages you with running, believe me, it's this one. It's a MUST HAVE FOR ALL RUNNERS [JOGGERS]!
- This is always mentioned as an historical book, but when you read it you will see that many things (more than 90% of the book) is very update and the basic structure of the book has been copied by other books. The interesting of this book is that it was written during the 1970s running boom and has much of the spirit of running that inspired many runners through the last 30 years. Jim Fixx and its history deserves the honor of having his book bought and his knowledge preserved. Good for beginners and intermediate runners. If you are a pro-runner, I believe you don't need to buy it, because you already have it.
- This may be the oldest running book but it is still the best. This book is full of insperation written by a very good writer. This book can make you want to run and love it.

5 comments about Jenny's Birthday Book.
- I first read Jenny's Birthday Book as a shy kindergartener. I picked it out of the school library based on my love for cats, the wonderful colors on the cover and because my birthday happened to be coming up. There was no way to know the impact of that library visit.
The following Septembers spent at Berkeley Street School, I would take out Jenny's Birthday Book as a special birthday ritual and read it slowly and mindfully, taken by the gentleness of the language and illustrations. The book was not only a comfort at the time, but shaped my sense of aesthetics and love for language. Even as an adult I am taken by the beauty of the scene where Jenny and her rambunctious friends "... danced the sailor's hornpipe in the moonlit park."
Anyway, never forgetting this book, I had been on fruitless search for it for the past 15 years (I thought it was titled Jenny's Birthday Party and didn't know the author) and happened upon it in a friend's shop. With a little girl on the way, I can't explain how thankful I am that it has been republished and now own it with the plan to read it to my own daughter.
- I was delighted to find these books again. For years I have been searching for the books about the little black cat, Jenny.
Recently, I was at Books of Wonder and was jokingly testing the salesperson's knowledge. She knew! I couldn't believe it.
These books were a pleasure to me as a child and spurred my love of reading. I intend to buy all of them for my daughter.
