- Aimed at the younger reader, this book is still filled with accurate information about this popular breed of cat. Very good description and history of the breed along with beautiful photos. 24 pages. One of a series called "Read All About Cats".

4 comments about Abyssinians (Kw Series).
- As a general information book on Abyssinian cats, it is an okay read. Some sections are sadly lacking in content, such as the grooming and feeding sections, and Ms. Cooke-Zimmerman tends to display very strong prejudices against certain colour varieties which have no place in a book like this and are a turn-off to breeders. I usually lend it to people wishing to buy a kitten from me, or who want to learn about the breed. NO technical information at all, and too many pictures of her dog, Chico.
- As with the first review, I agree that more technical info is needed. As I am only a "first- time" Aby owner, I would have liked some more "meaty" info about their unique personalities. For instance, Abys are supposedly not "lap cats", however, mine is a "leaner"-she likes to have half of her body on top of me (or the book I'm reading, or the sandwich I'm eating, etc.) while keeping the other half on the sofa, bed, etc. This is quite similar to the Akida (dog) that my parents had owned (although 7 lbs. ccompared to 130 is quite a difference). If you get a moment, I would love to hear again from you-I have been considering getting a Rex and then breeding both as I will be retiring soon. For anyone considering a pure-bred feline, this is the cat to choose!
- I needed a book on the care and training of an aby kitten--and this was not the book. What this books offers is information on the breed, what to look for in a show breed, and how to get started as a breeder. It's really a brief primer for breeders, not for the average aby owner who want to learn how to care and train a newly adopted kitten.
What dismays me the most is the mis-marketing of the book. A table of contents along with a short synopis of the book's approach would have directed me elsewhere. The author is not at fault here. My two stars are really directed at the mismarketing of this book.
- If you are serious about owning an Aby, and can afford an Aby from a reputable breeder, this book is pretty lame. Buy either "Abyssinian Cats: Everything About Acquisition, Care, Nutrition, Behavior, Health Care, and Breeding (Barron's Compete Pet Owner's Manuals)"
J. Anne Helgren or "This is the Abyssinian Cat" by Kate Faler. These books are way more comprehensive and way more complete. I'm on my 6th Aby, and it would be tough for me to switch to any other breed. The first book I mentioned is out of print, so it's hard to find and expensive. The other book can be had 2nd hand for $3-$4. They are WAY better investments. This book doesn't even get the different colors right and has typos. If you just need a cheap book for your kids report or something like that, it would be OK.

- Review of Popular Cat Library: Guide to Owning an Abyssinian Cat by Judah Track
This book is the hardcover version of "The Guide to Owning an Abyssinian CatE by the same author. I'm quite disappointed that this was not pointed out in the general description on the Amazon.com site, as I purchased both books, thinking that they were different books! This book has nice, glossy photos, with several fine specimens of Abyssinian cats and kittens in various stages of development. The text is informative and detailed. It covers many areas Ehistory and development of the breed, temperament and conformation (in detail, too), feeding, grooming, health care, exhibitions, etc. etc. There are sections on the interactions between a new Aby and existing pets, or between a new Aby and children. Also, there is some good coaching on how to train or discipline your Aby. I also like the section on accessories, but I wish there were more details and ideas here. The book includes a general index, but it is too general to be of good use. There is no bibliography or suggestions on further reading, which I think is a miss. Overall I think it is a really good read for a first-time Aby owner, or someone considering to be one.

- I recommend that anyone considering being owned by an Abyssinian read this book (the info is enlightening for already owned people as well). It covers in easily understood language everything one should know about Abyssinian Cats and how to care for them. It is simply enough written to be understood by children though not boring to adults. It could be used as a teaching tool for children in the home where kitty will live. The author starts at the beginning: How to buy the cat, acclimation, caring for it "Forever After," etc. She discusses controversial issues such as declawing (I'm personally opposed), grooming, showing, etc. The general care information would apply to most cats. But Abyssinians are very intelligent, loyal, inquisitive and active. If you want a cat that will NOT sit on the refrigerator, then perhaps this book would give the reader some understanding of the personality of the Abyssinian and guide the propsective cat owner toward making a good decision about whether or not to select this particular breed or another, less active, breed. Plenty of good photos.

- As the breed has evolved throughout the years, we can see a marked difference from the Abys detailed in this book to present day trends, but the basic information on care and breeding is very good. The text is easy to read, just technical enough to keep it interesting, and it is obvious Ms. Faler is well versed on her subject. A good reference for the Aby breeder.
- Kate Faler's book is detailed, practical and knowledgeable. Includes details of British cats behind American Abyssinians and lots of first class photos which really help show how the breed has developed in the last 50 years. Now that American Abys have been imported into Europe, UK, Australia so widely it is important to know about the US cats behind these imports.Valuable hints on care of Abys also. Would be improved by a world perspective and more details on original Abyssinian type developed in United Kingdom.
- This book was recommended to me by my Abys' breeder and am I glad she did. It's chock-full of information on every aspect of the breed, from its history to methods of care, information on showing and breeding and an additional section on Somalis, the long-haired version of the Aby. It's down-to-earth, sensible and one can tell the author's love of the breed clearly from her words.
Before getting an Aby - a highly intelligent, active and social cat who needs lots of love and attention - one would do well to give this book serious study. Know what you're getting into and the Aby will reward you with a life of insanity, activity and lots of LOVE! But don't buy an Aby thinking this is a "cat that will take care of itself". As Ms. Faler notes in this book, it is a people-loving breed that will flourish best in a home where it is not "just a pet", but an integral, adored member of the family.
- An aby breeder has lent me this book. Its excellent. It contains all you might want to know about sharing your life with abysinnian cat or more of them. It includes even instructions for first aid and keeping your cat healthy, how to prepare milk for kittens if queen fails to breastfeed, which plants to avoid, what toys are suitable etc. There is a history description on how abys have established themselves as a breed and what Britain has to do with it (and later USA). There are some beautiful photos, color and black and white. Its a must have for a breeder. However, keep in mind that book is - old. So some of the info (like information about colour variants of aby) is rusty. I do hope there will be a newer version of this book published soon.
- This was the first book I purchased after I got my Aby Cats and it is my Bible! Kate Faler when she wrote this book, (it was printed in 1983)was/is a practicing veterinarian that bred and owned these wonderful cats. I would reccomend any first time Aby owner to get this book first and then add the other books. The information contained in this book is timeless. That said, I would love to see an updated version. What fun it is to look at the pictures, even if some are in black and white, and see how similiar my kitties 20 years later look.
This book has saved the lives of two of my queens when they had some problems with their deliveries. The purchase price has more than paid for itself! I wouldn't own an Aby without it! Thank You Kate!

- I would recommend this book to any first time Aby owner. It is excellent value for money - covering the essential elements of background, care and behaviour of your new Aby. It is a slim volume with a soft cover, glossy pages and lots of pictures. It contains a good description of the history of the breed and carefully debunks the old theory that the Aby is a direct decendent of the ancient cats of Egypt. It contains clear guidelines for how to take care of your Aby and what kind of behaviour to expect from your new friend. For a book published so recently I would have liked to see more information regarding the new Aby colours - Chocolate and Lilac. I also felt that the 2 page spread of one Aby was not a good example of the breed and did not deserve the glowing description provided in the accompanying caption.

3 comments about Dolores and the Big Fire : A True Story.
- Dolores is a cat that saves her master from a nocturnal house fire. The story begins with the adoption of Dolores. Young readers are likely to identify with the cat. The other character, Dolores' patron, is a white, middle-aged bachelor living in lower economic conditions. He is highly tolerant of Dolores' idiosyncrasies. For example, Dolores is afraid of the dark. He, therefore, leaves all the lights on at night. While the story is realistic, it is rather scary. At first I thought the book was morbid but it did pull on my heartstrings and won me over in the end. The illustrations are watercolor and are often spread across both pages. The art is not imaginative or particularly attractive. The palate is largely browns and grays. The images do reinforce the serious tone of the book, however, and in the last analysis must be regarded as appropriate.
- My son who is a learning reader loved this book. He asks to read it again and again. He found the idea of it being a "true story" particularly intriguing. It also has led to discussions about fire safety and what we should do if a fire happened in our house.
- I really liked this book. It had some sad parts, but the story made me want to keep on reading. It has a great ending.
