3 comments about Clymer Volvo Stern Drive Shop Manual, 1968-1993.
- The manual's title is misleading. It only covers gasoline engines. I have a 1983 Volvo Diesel Stern Drive and it isn't covered in the text.
- I ordered the book hoping for information on the engine. However, it is better than the automotive books in my opinion. I have been working on cars for over thirty years and have gotten many manuals. However, I have never owned a boat before and bought this hoping it would give some information on the engine. I think it is better than the Clymer auto manuals. It doesn't cover diesels as another person pointed out, nor cover informtation on the boat itself. It covers all the aspects of the engine and drive system only, but very detailed.I am very pleased with it.
- This book did help me out a lot with some work I was doing to my boat. I think most critically it will tell you what's important or what steps should be taken. I'd have to say, most of the work I did would not require the book but it did aid in a couple of areas.
However, there are parts where it does not explain things very well. Such as "Use the tool to remove the part" which only tells you that you need a tool and to remove it. I found at times I had to figure out how certain things would need to be removed. Doing some searching on Google I found my answers.
There are helpful tips and tricks in the book. It's almost like talking with a mechanic who is telling you how to do the job. The difference is, you're bound to have a question or two.

5 comments about Volvo: 240 Series - 1976 thru 1993 - All gasoline engine models (Haynes Manuals).
- This manual is weak in certain areas. It is worth the price but the Bentley manual is much better being closer to real shop manual.
- I've owned and used these Haynes 240 Series manuals (various editions) for over 15 years. The book is just OK for covering general maintenance and minor repairs but is lacking in many areas.
About a year ago, I purchased the Bentley manual for the 240 and haven't looked at my Haynes since. The Bentley goes into far greater detail in the areas of electrical, fuel injection, and suspension. The troubleshooting section is also more comprehensive. If you're wanting to buy one repair manual to own for the life of your Volvo(s), spend the little extra money for the Bentley book. The Haynes book just doesn't measure up and Chilton is by far the worst.
- I'm finding that the Haynes Volvo 240 series manual is handy for cross refrence, using Chilton primarily. Haynes offers a bit different view of some diagrams and helps in understanding wording. Would give an average review.
- I agree with the other reviewers who say the Bentley is the One To Get; however the Haynes 240 book often has more details in its step-by-step instructions and makes fewer assumptions about the reader's experience. In effect the books are complimentary. Before I work on my Volvo, I read the relevant sections from both books.
- As others have said, this manual serves as a good companion to the bentley. I like that it has a general troubleshooting section that can help you begin diagnosing your problem.

5 comments about Volvo: Coupes/Sedans/Wagons 1990-98: Covers all U.S. and Canadian models of Volvo 240, 240DL, 240GL, 740, 740GL, 740GLE, 740 Turbo, 760GLE, 760 Turbo, ... (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
- This repair manual claims to have 500 pages covering all Volvo models from 1990 to 1998. It has barely 200 pages and it only gives a semblance of covering those models well. The manual gives illustrations of repair function on one model, but gives none for the other models. It uses engine repair illustrations that are not even Volvo engines. There are few illustrations of repair functions of the 960 model.
- Frankly, I haven't been all that impressed with any of the repair manual's issued for Volvo. All third-party manuals tend to be vague and overly broad; Chilton's is particularly poorly focused, unnecessarily ambitious in model year breadth and maddening incomplete in coverage. I cannot reccomend this manual as a sole source for the enterprising shade tree mechanic. Yet, there are times when I find it as an essential compliment to the Haynes manual. Haynes is published out of England, and tends to ignore features specific to US model cars (FI troubleshooting is a weakness of the Haynes; Chilton's manual covers this area at an acceptible level.
- Yes, this book does cover a models, and for that I give it two stars. However, many times I felt like I was doing something wrong. The book can too short sometimes, leaving the reader wondering what to do next.
Volvo is a company that needs more car manuals. They make very good cars and it's a shame that most of the better manuals are not sold in stores.
If you want to learn more about your Volvo, then get this book along with your dealer's manuals. I also highly recommend Auto Repair for Dummies by Deanna Sclar.
- They tried to cover too much in too little space. Very limited electrical schematics and poor descriptions. Sorry I bought it and am looking for another one.
- Very good user guide for do-it-yourselfers. Recommend getting the Hayes Manual too. The two compliment each other. Why pay mechanics for what you can do yourself.

- The title is misleading. The manual only covers gasoline engines. I have a Volvo diesel sterndrive of the same era and it isn't covered.
- Great manual, lots of helpful pictures. This book helped us get our 1973 Glaston running better than ever! If you don't have any knowledge of how engines work I wouldn't recommend this book. It is not a "beginners" book.

5 comments about Talking Right: How Conservatives Turned Liberalism into a Tax-Raising, Latte-Drinking, Sushi-Eating, Volvo-Driving, New York Times-Reading, Body-Piercing, Hollywood-Loving, Left-Wing Freak Show.
- "Talking Right" by Geoffrey Nunberg is a timely analysis of the lopsided and dysfunctional status of U.S. political discourse. Mr. Nunberg is a linguistics professor who explains how the Republican Party's privileged relationship with the media has helped to define the political narrative, which in turn has effectively tilted public perceptions to the political Right. However, by deconstructing the manner in which the Right's political language has been frequently served up as a smokescreen to obscure its radical neoconservative agenda, the author helps us understand how the political Left can present an alternative discourse that could resonate with the vast majority of Americans. Assiduously researched and cogently argued, this thoughtful, nuanced and highly readable text should interest a wide audience.
Mr. Nunberg presents a brief history of the neoconservative movement to recount how language has been deployed in order to associate particular words and phrases with politically-charged meanings. For example, the phrase 'cultural elite' was introduced by Vice President Dan Quayle in 1992 and succeeded in connecting Hollywood entertainment with sectors of the public who might have felt apprehension about social change. Indeed, Mr. Nunberg points out that since the 1960s the Republican Party has adroitly manufactured and magnified the importance of Pat Buchanan's 'culture war' in a way that has convinced large blocs of the working class to vote against its own material interests. Unfortunately, as liberals are reduced to a snobbish and out-of-touch caricature of the consumer culture imagination, Mr. Nunberg contends that the Democratic Party has failed to articulate a meaningful narrative of its own to inspire the faithful or to define the Party's mission.
Nonetheless, Mr. Nunberg believes that the Democrats can yet prevail if it dares to once again speak truth to power. Mr. Nunberg cites Bill Clinton's highly effective narrative about the powerless versus the powerful during the 1992 campaign as an example of how a message can resonate with an increasingly insecure working class beset with economic grievances. To that end, the author goes on to argue that in the wake of the Bush administration's disastrous policies (including preemptive war, fiscally irresponsible tax breaks and reckless environmental rollbacks), liberals have an excellent opportunity to articulate a new popular narrative of working-class struggle in the pursuit of economic justice and equality.
I highly recommend this important book to everyone, and especially to those interested in media and politics.
- We swim through words like fish swim through water. Metaphors are accepted as reality by many. Legends become gospil truth. This books was an informative and fun view at a very important (not just politically) subject. And now, at last, I know where the word "pinko" came from and what it means.
- Well done for what it is, but Nunberg exhibits the classic fear of delving below the psychological surface. He seems to believe that the left will lose the common man even worse if it starts thinking psychologically about why it's losing him already. He disses Lakoff's look at policital metaphors and doesn't even bother to dis explanations that are even better, such as those of Alice Miller, Stephen Ducat, and Lloyd deMause. It frustrated me to no end as I read Nunberg advocate a return to the populist rhetoric of Truman and Clinton, hardly big winners. Truman's was a nortoriously narrow win, and Clinton's first election was a gimmie from a thrid-party candidate on the right. Nunberg seems to set his sights on the unlofty goal of 51% of the vote rather than a true strategy that will dismantle the psychological tricks the right plays on the populace like stroking their machismo, their fear, their weath fantasies, their need for scapegoats, etc.
Wake up and smell the psychological coffee, Nunberg. The right has.
- This is a must read for anyone in America who cares about politics--which should be everyone! If you thought Lakoff insightful on the differences a frame can make, wait until you read Nunberg. I teach this stuff and know whereof I speak. Talking Right is one of those rare hybrids that's right for the classroom and right as a trade book for the typically older, post-college reader. I've ordered several copies for friends.
- Timely considering the fact that language, namely written generally and political especially would appear to be coming under considerable pressure from 'new' form(s) of communication. Mr. Nunberg presents in this timely piece the notion that political language nominal and despite the explosion of the internet as a 'complete' medium remains omnipresent. More importantly and regardless of one's political affliation this cogent analyses reinforces the old adege:buyer beware!

5 comments about Volvo 850, 1993-1997 (Haynes Manuals).
- Lacks depth. Wiring diagrams very limited. I used Haynes before on a Dodge and the book was much better.
- This book is worth having for the price, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Some repairs are explained in enough detail, but all too often the pictures shown are difficult to determine where on the chassis you should be working. If you are already very familiar with all of the nooks and crannies, then this may not be a problem for you.
The index is also very weak. Haynes could do a much better job of adding keywords to the index to help find things. For example, my "Check Engine" light came on. The index doesn't have an entry for "Check Engine", or "Light - Check Engine" or similar. I don't recall other examples off-hand, but this wasn't the only example. However, there is certainly enough information contained in this manual to help you do many repairs. Once I found the section that contained the "Check Engine" information, the instructions were concise enough to help me determine the problem and resolve it.
- Book is quite helpfull, and ease to understand.
Some small things missing...
- Just what you have come to expect from Haynes/Chilton. This is a pretty thorough overview of the Volvo 850's systems, maintenance, and repair. It is not as thorough as some more expensive maintenance manuals. But it will get you through most procedures. If you get stumped, there are plenty of Volvo forums and user groups out there to fill in the fine details.
All in all, it is a great starting point for maintaining your own car. Just remember that you will have to fo somewhere else for fine detail.
- Far better than the Chilton's equivalent, this Haynes guides focuses on a small enough "slice" of models and years to allow it to get some decent detail. Far from perfect, of course, but a decent guide for the money. (Since the Volvo manual is a four-digit proposition, it's a reasonable trade-off.)

- VERY DISSAPOINTING MANUAL
VERY LOW QUALITY PAPER
VERY POOR PHOTOS
NOT MUCH INFO WHEN COMPARED TO FACTORY MANUALS
VERY OVERPRICED I PAID 38.00 NOW ITS 31.00 STILL WAY OVERPRICED
- This hardback is not as described in the other review. It includes the usual information of Haynes manuals which means that it covers almost everything the home mechanic will perform including engine teardown photos and details. Haynes leaves out repairs that are expert level and the determined mechanic can find information on these repairs if desired.
The paper is normal Haynes paper. The pictures are black and white and clear. The book is expensive because it is a hardback and an import from Britian (with such words as Bonnet and Tyre).
I will fault Amazon with the current wait time for this item. I ended up getting an excellent used copy for about the same price.
Frankly, not sure what Mr. Gushue is talking about.
- I've owned a '98' V70 for over six years now and I do all the work myself. I bought this book recently to see if it was any good. I was hoping it would fill in a few gaps that the other books left. After using it for several months now I can say that this is THE book to have for your early 98-99 V70. No other DIY book that I have compares. It's layed out really well. The pictures are excellent. The text is superb. Get it!
- Note that this repair manual covers Volvo S70, V70 and C70 cars for 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. Hayne's manuals are generally good, albeit with significantly less information that a factory manual. Good for everyday repairs, especially when supplemented with information from Volvo forums on the web.

- I have seen them all, and this one is it. You can read this book, or just rifle thru the pages from beginning to end and see solutions to problems that have been bothering you or see answers to questions you have had Just by accident !!!!!! Also it is , of course a fantastic step by step repair manual, far outstripping the competitors for exactness and illustrations. Highly recommended .
- It is a good merchandise very low price. It a great opportunity to learned all those trick that can help you to fond a solution on restoration and repair project.
- For every one who wants to take care of his lovely 240 car , book like this is essential in addition to recommendation from previous owner of Volvo cars and clubs you can easily find there web sites in the Internet.
- Bentley manuals are by far the best when it comes to back yard mechanic manuals. Coupled with[...] the average mechanic can fix almost anything. I highly recommend this manual if you own a 240 and enjoy working on your vehicles.
- If you own a Volvo 200 series, get this book. It's a much better reference than the cheaper books you'll find in your local auto parts store.
